About this property

Stable House at Grey Towers, 1.5 hours from NYC. Milford, Pa.

"Like going to France without the travel!" The Stable House is located on a historic 20 acre property adjacent to a forest with waterfall. It is a 2 bedroom, one-bath residence with large front porch, walled garden with swimming pool and adjacent forest with trails. There is another house on the property, The Foresters Cottage (VRBO #430708), also rentable, whose renters, if present, may also use the pool.

The Stable House living room is cozy with plate glass window, recessed bookshelves and fireplace. Full kitchen includes dishwasher and appliances. This is a great family house 1.5 hours from Manhattan.

The Stable House was once a part of the historic 19th century French country estate owned by the Pinchot family. The original property included the Stable House, the adjacent Forester's Cottage (still in use and rentable for larger groups) and Grey Towers, a 43-room turreted chateau designed by Richard Morris Hunt that is now an environmental research center and museum. The Stable House overlooks a two-acre walled garden with its Italian urns, box hedges, fruit trees, open lawn and beautifully landscaped swimming pool for guests to use, tucked discreetly out of sight. Beyond the far side of the garden wall lie the forested hills & valleys of the Poconos, a half-mile from the charming, historic town of Milford, Pennsylvania and the Delaware River.

Securely situated behind a wrought-iron electronic gate, the Stable House and Foresters Cottage combined provide a unique setting for family gatherings and reunions, corporate retreats, film-making, writers, artists, environmentalists, history buffs, yoga retreats, and many other possibilities.

An 1/8 mile walk from the Stable House into a hemlock forest brings you to the only privately owned waterfall of its size on the east coast . This 50-foot waterfall courses through a cathedral of ancient moss-covered cliffs carved by a mountain stream. No swimming is allowed in the stream. Guests must sign a liability waiver to enter the forest.

The Stable House sits on a privately owned 20-acre property that includes exclusive access to these features. Only 70 miles from New York City this property resonates with history and a quiet, natural grandeur.

The adjacent property, Grey Towers, now owned by the U.S. Forest Service, has extensive landscaped gardens and a beautiful ground floor museum dedicated to Gifford Pinchot, one of America’s first conservationists and a former Governor of Pennsylvania. You will feel like a 19th century guest of the Pinchots as you stroll through the beautiful gardens and grounds of Grey Towers. Visit the “Finger Bowl”, a wisteria-covered dining table where the guests floated the food on wooden bowls as they sat around the bluestone edge. You can take a tour of the original mansion, beautifully restored to its original state in 2001.

Milford, PA is a former mill town founded on the Delaware River in 1796. It attracts visitors for its fine dining,, inns, antiques and galleries. Atlantic Magazine called Milford “the prettiest county seat in America.”

Charming house on lovely grounds
The property was just as described. Very clean and well maintained. Beautiful grounds. Our host was extremely responsive especially when we experienced strange hiccup early in the morning. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others.

Beautiful property and grounds
It was a very special weekend in beautiful surroundings. There is plenty to do on the property including the bonus of a beautiful waterfall a short hike from the house. Everything was well appointment and thought out, and this was simply a wonderful place to relax, and get together with friends. There is also plenty to do in the surrounding areas especially if you like hiking and water sports.

Family Getaway
We had such a relaxing time! The Stable House was the perfect late summer retreat. Pool was perfection, the falls were breathtaking, and the history and beauty of Grey Towers was magical. My teenage boys and I enjoyed the peace and quiet of the grounds, and were enthralled with the history.

Wonderful!
What a fantastic and unique stay! In addition to positive reviews of others (no ac - no problem, no tv - we brought our own with Amazon Prime and movies on external hard drive), what our family REALLY appreciated was that the extra needed household things were exactly where one would expect to find them (specifically extension cord, screwdriver, scissors). The house is well-stocked with most everything a family would need on vacation - we did not have to buy anything except food, plastic containers, and ziplocks. The closest supermarket Key Foods was an amazingly pleasant surprise for us too since it has a lot of Russian/post-USSR countries brands that you would find in Brooklyn - definitely a plus for the Slavic Poconos community. I did not see it in the comments here, but the trail to the waterfall has 2 entrances: one closer to the top for waterfall view, and another closer to the bottom with access to water (no swimming!). The trails are in the middle of the woods, so if you have a foraging expert with you, you will enjoy plenty of edible mushrooms (boletus/masljata) like we did. Prepared them fried with potatoes twice during our stay. The only minor downside was that the house is on the dusty side. No problems for most, but one person in our group is allergic to dust. During our 5 day stay only 2 Claritin 24-hour pills were needed - very manageable. Overall, 5 star vacation!! Thank you Tammy and Pinchot family!

A Special Place and a Wonderful Setting
As other reviewers have noted, the Stable House is a special place, in a wonderful setting. Built in the late 19th century, it is within the grounds of Grey Towers historic site, with private access to a large walled garden and pool, as well as direct access to the USDA managed area around Grey Towers. It is an ideal place for privacy and quiet in a country setting, but it is still close to the delightful small town of Milford, with shops and restaurants. However, anyone renting this house should be aware that although the house has been updated at various times in its history , it is an old property and a family house. At times, charming, quaint, and eclectic furnishings can seem worn and tired. The small kitchen has new appliances, but the countertops and cupboards and pots and pans within them have seen better days. A drip coffeemaker would be a welcome addition instead of the old French press., as would an ice cube tray. As long as one comes with the right expectations, these are, however, relatively minor inconveniences, weighed against the uniqueness of the property. Two other points: the pool and garden are shared with the other house on the property. It is some distance away from the Stable House, but there is not complete privacy. Also, renters should ensure that they have received the proper code to access the gate to the property after hours. The confirmation email we received had the wrong code, leaving us locked out when we returned from dinner our first night. Fortunately we were able to reach the property manager by phone and obtain the right code.

Such a memorable stay!
First, this isn’t the five star hotel with all amenities, marble bathrooms and chocolates on the pillows. This is, however, such an amazing rustic retreat! From the total stillness of the forest nearby, to bright stars at night, a sizable waterfall (private access), huge private garden, a swimming pool, to the real charm of the older structure and furnishings - a total experience. The lacking A/C did not derail our enjoyment even during 90 degree days. Private, secluded, and peace. We hope to return soon.

Lovely Property
The cottage was perfect, in a great location, and on beautiful grounds of Grey Towers. The house had everything we needed and, even though the weather was not cooperative, we had a great time. The private trail with the waterfall was “magical” in the words of our 5 year old and dealing with Tammy was easy as could be. My kids are already asking to go back!

Beautiful property with pool and hiking trails
Our stay was great! We are a group of young adults who wanted to get out of the city and enjoy the outdoors. Tammy’s property was beautiful and very peaceful. The house itself is small and rustic, so if you’re looking for comfy, modern furnishings then this isn’t your place. We enjoyed the indoor fireplace, grilled and ate dinner on the patio deck overlooking the sprawling lawn. Very relaxing weekend away!

Unique Experience at the Chateau
I planned a weekend of floating down the Delaware & relaxing by the pool for a group of friends. Staying at the Chateau made it a unique experience -- we were able to roam the grounds and find the beautiful waterfall. The house is charming and beautiful. There's plenty of space for ten in the house and four in the guest house. The lack of air conditioning was no issue at all, even in August, as the house stays cool throughout the day and even better at night. We can't wait to come back!

Great stay at the Stable House
We had a great time staying at the Stable House for a weekend getaway. Everything was as pictured and described in the listing, and the host Tammy was extremely responsive and helpful. The house is situated on a nice spot on the beautiful grounds of the grey towers, a few hundred feet from the towers themselves, the walled garden, and the hike to the waterfall. It was extremely helpful to be able to bring our dogs to the walled garden and let them run around off leash. It's called a garden, but it's about half an acre of grass with some bushes, and it's quite well enclosed. The waterfall is beautiful and an easy walk through the woods on a well maintained path. It's also a 5 minute drive from Milford, which has a few shops and restaurants. The interior of the house was clean, quaint, and functional. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking, there were plenty of extra sheets and towels, a useful informational binder, lots of books and magazines, etc. The reason I gave 4 stars is the furniture is a bit old and uncomfortable. Couches had flat, uneven pillows. The bed frame was creaky. The shower head is basically a hose. Everything worked and we enjoyed our stay, but we couldn't quite snuggle in and just enjoy a cozy evening at home, which is something we would have expected for the cost. Overall highly recommended.

Amazing property and location! Had an amazing time staying for a weekend in the stable house. Gorgeous property hidden in the overall grey towers property that feels very private but easily accessible to town. Took a quick walk in the woods to the waterfall and was impressed how peaceful and well kept the trail was. Would recommend to anyone looking for a private escape from the city!

A haven of peace and quiet, in a lovely setting
We really enjoyed our stay in this characterful property. It has a lovely feel to it, and we were very comfortable. It reminded us of back home in England! It feels very private and quiet, surrounded by the gardens, and forest. Yet you are only a 5m drive or a 20-30m walk into town. The pool was lovely and, again, felt very private - though shared with guests from the other property on the site. Only a couple things to note - there was no TV (at least that we could find) although that is listed in amenities, and not all the windows had blinds/curtains. Neither were a problem for us, but mentioned in case these are a consideration for you. We enjoyed eating at 403 Broad for delicious Pizza and the Waterwheel cafe where the fruit pie was delicious. A lovely weekend break.

Great for relaxation!
It was me and my husband and dog. We stayed in the Stable House. The property was gorgeous and well maintained. The house was cozy and the thick stone walls + the floor fans really did keep out all of the heat. Pool was beautiful, very private and well maintained. The walls around the gardens are high so our dog ran around without our having to worry about her escaping. Kitchen was well stocked with utensils. Huge comfortable terrace. The mansion gardens are a must see. We didn't have time to see the interior. We think we're going to make this our annual summer get away!

Pretty and peaceful
I enjoyed my stay very much. My little dog and I walked and walked, taking in the beauty of the magnificent natural setting. It was exactly what I was hoping it would be- we were mostly alone except for the friendly Forest Rangers. Communication with the owner was smooth and helpful. The weather was glorious and we were very comfortable, even without air conditioning. I would definitely return.
