About this property
Private Island with off-grid solar powered cottage, private dock and mooring
Broom Island is an exclusive private island of over 18 acres located in the heart of the Fox Islands (Vinalhaven & North Haven) with a 1500sf cottage powered by an off-grid solar system. The cottage also has a propane fueled hot water system and oven/range. The cottage has 2 bedrooms - one with a queen bed and the other with multiple bunk beds for children. The spacious living room, featuring a native granite fireplace, also offers a sofa bed for extra sleeping space. Imagine waking up in this fabulous retreat surrounded by nature and the ocean and enjoying a delightful morning coffee on the deck and then strolling the around-the-island path, going for a swim, or fishing off one of many rocks and coves where the Mill River ocean currents ebb and flow. All guests will have access to a double-seated kayak and rowboat. A Boston Whaler or other boats are available for rent and all guests have preferred access to a USCG-licensed Captain of a Parker 23' sport cabin for any charters to town, nearby islands, etc. (fees incremental/separate). There is a guest mooring for small to mid-size boats, and the island is within close proximity of Perry's Cove anchorage. The island is part of Vinahaven but closer to the town of North Haven by boat. Visitors will be greeted at the North Haven ferry terminal and shuttled to the island. Alternatively, private charter can be arranged from Rockland or nearby harbor. This special island is for nature lovers who are looking for a true off-grid island experience in a rustic but charming cottage! (note: kitchen and bath are currently under renovation- pictures to be posted soon)

About the host
Hosted by Rufus Frost

I live in the Portland, Maine area and have visited North Haven and Vinalhaven my whole life. Our family has now owned property in Vinalhaven for 4 generations, and Broom Island since 1965. I am passionate about Maine, the ocean and outdoor recreation. I look forward to sharing things to do and places to go that are off the beaten path.
What makes this property unique
Broom Island is a truly special place. The island features granite rock, large oak, birch and spruce trees, fern valleys, and the sounds and smells of unspoiled nature. Osprey, Eagles, and Blue Heron circle the island and seals patrol the ocean on all sides. The island was first used by Native Americans and some artifacts have been found at the "Indian shell mound" including several arrowheads.
