About this property

Apeldoorn House by CM | Luxury Home Near AVLšŸ” +Biltmore Pass

Apeldoorn House welcomes you with mountain charm that lends itself to leisure. Picture an unimposing cottage-style home overlooking a green valley with a creek running the length of the property, the perfect backdrop for activities such as enjoying the mountain view from the stone patio or sitting by the babbling brook for an evening under the stars. Nestled in a private cove near Black Mountain, NC, this extraordinary green-built vacation rental sets a standard for the eco-tourism movement. Apeldoorn House has garnered positive press for its "hempcrete" building material, a popular choice for environmentally safe construction in Europe for many generations, but a rare architectural find in the United States. Featuring twelve-inch thick walls that naturally repel moisture, the structure was built with earth-friendly materials, including barn wood repurposed as ceiling beams and window sills, 150-year-old cabinets that were salvaged from a renovated building in New York City, and the hempcrete walls which will compost when deconstructed.

The adobe interior creates a comforting aesthetic with arched doorways, built-in bench seats, and deep-set windows that span the front of the home, bringing countryside views into the living area. A cozy reading nook is calling your name, or maybe the beautiful weather draws you out to the covered deck. Tap into the creative vibe that resonates here. Imagine cooking a gourmet dinner in the well-equipped kitchen, then dining at the picnic table under the towering oak tree. Retreat to one of two plush bedrooms, both with queen-size beds. The primary bedroom suite feels like a sanctuary with its own full bath, a writing desk in a sunny alcove, and walkout access to the covered patio. Apeldoorn House warms up at night where the fireplace creates a relaxing atmosphere to gather. Walk across the yard to visit the game room, located in a separate outbuilding, including a cornhole set, a foosball table, and board games for family entertainment. Come together around the fire pit on chilly winter nights. Adventure seekers will discover trails through the old-growth forest, garden beds full of flowering native plants, and the stepping stone path by the creek where fairies live among the ferns in the summer. Redbud and dogwood trees bloom in the spring, and autumn is bursting with stunning scenery. Channeling the unique small-town charm of its namesake city in the Netherlands, Apeldoorn House offers the opportunity to explore Black Mountain, North Carolina, a quaint valley town known for its great restaurants and shops, parks, and family-friendly atmosphere. Travelers seeking inspiration will fall in love with Apeldoorn House and look forward to returning again and again. This Asheville vacation rental is located in Black Mountain and is approximately 26 minutes from downtown Asheville.

Storybook Cottage in the Mountains

The property was adorable and well appointed with every small detail addressed. The home looks to have been recently refreshed and it has some of the most comfortable beds and linens I've experienced in a vacation rental.

Immaculate villa!

Wow! This home is beautifully designed, spacious enough to feel comfortable, but still very cozy. It had all the comforts of home, and is decorated beautifully. The property is lovely with tons of outdoor space for kids to explore and adults to relax. It is just a few miles from town, but a world away. We loved it!

Butterfly Heaven

The property is lovely inside and out. We enjoyed sitting outside and watching all the butterflies and hummingbirds that were attracted to the plants surrounding the house. A stream runs through the backyard. It was so peaceful to relax and have a cup of coffee or glass of wine and read a book.

Black Mountain

This property was amazing. The house is more beautiful in person than the pictures. It is also settled on the property where you cannot see another home. It feels like you are alone & is peaceful. Black Mountain is 2.8 miles away with lots of options to eat and shop. We will be back every year!

Apledoorn is beautiful but some hiccups

Apledoorn in a beautiful and peaceful property. My mother and I stayed for the day before heading to Tennessee and found that Apledoorn had all of the comforts of home. The property manager was able to accommodate an early check in since we arrived earlier than expected. We did have brief encounter with snake by the front door when we arrived for check in. It slithered away and we didn’t see it again but we completely understood it would be a chance we would see some wildlife during our stay. However, when we came back from lunch, several landscapers were working on the grounds and blocked the entrance to the driveway. They did move their truck so were able to access the driveway again but I wish we given notice that they would be there. Additionally, the owners of the house came by unannounced around 8:30pm as we were preparing for bed to replace slats for the master king bed. We were hesitant to let them in at first because I had not heard from the property manager but they said it would be a quick fix. They also switched out the paperwork in the home manual notebook with a new copy but they also took the check out process page as well. We didn’t notice until we starting to check out in the morning. I contacted the property manager through the app to find out what to do and explain what happened to the page. She also seem surprised about the owners coming by but she explained what we needed to do. Overall, Apledoorn was absolutely gorgeous but the unexpected guests did shock us since we were unaware anyone would be visiting the property while we were there. I would still recommend this property to others but I wish communication between the owners and the property manager would have been better.

Lovely home - Enjoyed the wildlife!

Beautifully appointed! Cabins are not my jam. This is definitely non-cabiny! Tastefully decorated with a full kitchen, the real gem is the backyard terrace. We spotted a mama bear and 4 cubs almost daily, playing in the creek. Hummingbirds, butterflies, wild turkeys, fireflies at night. Property Manager Christy contacted us en route to ask if we could check in a little later than planned due to housekeeping issue. That was not a problem for us, and Christy was very easy to work with. This is a place to relax!

Picture-perfect getaway

We cannot say enough wonderful things about this property. The home is impeccably decorated, the beds are uber-comfortable, and the location is perfect. Although you're only 10 minutes from the town of Black Mountain, you feel as if you are tucked away in some beautiful, secluded meadow with only the sights and sounds of nature around you. When we originally booked this for a mother-daughter getaway, the idea was to have easy access to Black Mountain and/or Asheville for hiking, shopping, and dining. The reality was that once we set foot on the property, we barely left. It was too beautiful to waste time anywhere else. If you enjoy watching nature (turkeys, deer, birds) while dining al fresco on a covered patio which overlooks an expansive lawn and gorgeous landscaping with only the sound of a babbling brook in the background, please book here. You will not want to leave. But please DO leave at some point, so we can come back to enjoy it again. Absolutely flawless.

Spectacular property that will quickly become an all time favorite for most

Staying at Apeldoorn is almost embarrassingly decadent. I mean, it’s ridiculously beautiful just to drive in to the area, but upon opening the front door, all of your stress disappears. The owners have created a masterpiece of a rental. I’m pretty sure it’s a newer listing but based on my experience, it will quickly become a favorite on many ā€˜best of’ lists in NC. Starting with the size, it is perfect for one or two couples trying to get away for a quiet weekend. There is plenty of space and it’s laid out in such a way that it feels bigger than it is. The vibe is definitely European cottage, and the way they repurposed much of the furnishings is not only admirable, but everything is incredibly functional as well. The attention to detail is outstanding, including the dimmable sconces and recessed lighting, the soft-close drawers and cabinets, and labeling the important switches throughout. They definitely learned from the best examples on the market how to create a rental space to remember. The beds are pretty comfortable, the kitchen is large and well-stocked, and the internet, while slower because it’s satellite, is good enough to check email and browse a bit. I wouldn’t try to stream video. Mobile signals are almost nonexistent as well, at least AT&T, but you’re on vacation so the slower wifi and mobile dead zone is a blessing to be honest. Apeldoorn is only 30 minutes from Asheville so it makes for a perfect oasis to come back to after visiting the busy and crowded tourist areas. From the beautiful house and landscaping, the large and relaxing outdoor spaces, and the soothing stream down the hill, what’s not to love? I have stayed in nearly 50 rentals over the years - from the middle of nowhere tiny homes in the Arizona desert, to entire eight bedroom villas on the Mediterranean, so when I booked Apeldoorn for my wife and I to stay in during her birthday weekend, my expectations were tempered. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to the point where I can enthusiastically say this property is now in my top 10 stays in the southeast. I can’t wait to come back. I just hope future guests continue to treat this hidden gem with the respect it deserves.

One of our top stays!

This thoughtful little cottage left nothing to be desired. As cozy as it was it was even more well appointed with everything you would need in a home away from home. The unique authenticity made it such a memorable stay. The owners thought of every detail in the building and furnishing of their little chateau on this pristine rolling property. Coffee or cocktails outside overlooking this gorgeous yard with every color tree and rolling creek was better than any restaurant or cafe in downtown Asheville.
