TRANSPORTATION:
Car: Recommended 4WD
There is public transit both from the airports to La Fortuna and from La Fortuna to El Castillo and Villa Millon and various activities. Please call us for more information on the alternative transportation options.

TRAVEL DIRECTONS:
From San Jose, take the Panamerican Highway to San Ramon, exit when you see the sign directing you to San Ramon and drive through the town of San Ramon following the signs of the Arenal volcano route. You will go through Bajo Rodriguez, La Tigra, Chachauga and then finally to La Fortuna. We suggest that you use a GPS mapping and routing system. Also the WAZE App for your cell phone works very well. When you pick up your car, enter La Fortuna and select the police station as your destination in your GPS router. Go west out of La Fortuna entering El Castillo as your destination in your GPS router. Upon arriving in El Castillo turn left through the village proper and continue up the hill approximately 1km. There are two stone pillars at the end of the drive holding a gate to the property on the right.

DIRECTIONS TO EL CASTILLO FROM LA FORTUNA:

When you get to La Fortuna go west through the town and pass Tabacon on your right, then go a few more miles (about 4) until you see a tiny little police station on your right..you will take a left there onto a dirt road. Go 3 or 4 miles until you get to an intersection (T) where you must take a left or right. You will see a lot of signs directing you to different places in El Castillo. You will take a left. Go another few miles until you go over a small bridge and take your next right...at more signs. Keep going straight. You will pass the Sky Trek and continue to follow the road for a few miles, keep driving until you go over another small bridge. The first left after this bridge is the entrance to our village. Go through the village proper and then up the hill and you will pass the Serpentarium, then the Butterfly Conservatory (the house is approximately 600 meters from here)..continue going up and you will see Essence Arenal on the right. You will pass two streets on your right and then your house is the 6th house on the right. There are two stone pillars at the end of the drive holding a gate to the property. Please call us when you arrive in La Fortuna and either myself or our caretaker will meet you there. If for some reason we miss each other there will be a key in a combination lockbox.

Spring Break Getaway

This place was perfect for our family of 4. We had plenty of room to spread out with two teenage boys. The location was easy to drive to many excursions and restaurants. Seeing the Arenal Volcano from the front porch area every morning was so beautiful and serene. Ericka was very good at communicating with us every step of the way. We all enjoyed our trip to Costa Rica.

Nice view (when the clouds break around Arenal Volcano) but was poorly equipped for a longer term stay. Lots of tours in the area and good restaurants to eat at. Long drive into La Fortuna.

Amazing Location but Lacking Privacy Inside

Place was super clean and location was amazing. Short walk to town and to activities. Only issue was that the 2 bedrooms inside plus the bathroom had walls that do not go all the way to the ceiling. So you get privacy but no privacy from noise. Everyone can hear you in the bathroom and the 2 front bedrooms you can hear everything. If anyone gets up early or stays up late, this impacts everyone. I would not stay again due to this unless it was just with 2 people in the back master bedroom.

Great location

Nice size house in a great location, there was plenty of room for the five of us. Great local activities. Everyone was very nice and caring. I would not say that this property is on the lake but it does have great views of Arenal Volcano. Thanks for the use of your home!!!

Gorgeous spaces and views

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The welcome basket of fruit and the fresh flower arrangements added to the luxurious view of the lake and Arenal. The kitchen had all we needed for cooking, good hiking from the house and close enough to Fortuna and all the activities! Thank you for the easy check in, directions and communication. Would definitely stay here again and recommend to others!

Wonderful Neighborhood!

We loved our stay at this wonderful house. It was more than enough space for our family of 4. We had everything we needed. I LOVED that it was down the street from the yoga center and I walked to yoga every morning and it was blissful. The hosts were wonderful and answered every question we had plus came by to hook up the netflix that had become disconnected, when we needed it. The only downside which I cannot blame anyone or thing for is the ants, This is a community issue that all deal with. They do a great job keeping the place clean and bugs are just a mainstay in Costa Rica. They were easy to clean up and only appeared if we left out any scrap of food so you just have to be mindful and I assume this is anywhere you stay over in this neighborhood. There are a few great restaurants nearby including La Ventana and the restaurant at the yoga retreat center. Plus there are two little markets near by for basic needs. The water pressure was great in the shower, the laundry machine and dryer worked great and we were safe and happy. Thank you again for a wonderful stay!

Beautiful property in a great location

My family and I had a great experience. Before we left for our trip, Tricia sent us an email with very helpful information that made it easy for us to find the house and check in. It was also really nice having Ericka close by for support if we needed anything. For being in the rainforest, the house was incredibly clean. The location was everything we wanted - great views of the volcano and in a less populated area. The restaurants that were close by (walking distance) were great and would highly recommend. Overall, we had a great experience! I'd highly recommend this house for any family, especially a family visiting Costa Rica (and the La Fortuna area) for the first time.

Beautiful place w/ volcano view

What a lovely spot in this more secluded area, wonderful neighbors who helped give us ideas of where to go for our excursions (we did 2 days of excursions while there - highly recommend the zip-line + hot springs tour! Awesome for the whole family (our youngest is 7)). The house has an open lay-out, bedrooms in the back, as described on the listing. Easy-to-use kitchen, nice outdoor eating area. We were there during when there was some rain and it was very easy to dry everything out and eat under the covered outdoor space when it was sprinkling. Also washing/drying our clothes was key. We highly recommend this house for those who want to stay off the beaten path! You'll need 4W drive to get up the driveway during the rainy season (as the owner mentions in the listing).

Amazing location

El Castillo is such a wonderful town, and the view from this rental is unbeatable. The directions to get there were a bit tricky (we got coordinates from the owner that the Internet didn't recognize, and the description in the directions, while thorough, was a lot to decipher while driving in a new place) and the house is not well equipped for cooking or cleaning. The layout is a bit unusual—you access the master bedroom and second bathroom through another bedroom—but the home itself is beautiful and the outdoor areas are lovely.

Wonderful home in a wonderful area

We stayed here for about a week with our two sons (8 and 11). It was perfect. The views were amazing, with a beautiful horse across the way that we watched daily. The house was perfect for a family of four and the village was very welcoming. It was nice to be outside of the hustle of la fortuna and enjoy the quiet away from the town. The only recommendation I would have is to ensure the supplies for the guests are adequate - such as having enough hand soap and dish soap. But all in all it was perfect and we were so sad to leave. Ericka, the concierge for the property was very sweet, bringing us fresh fruit the day after we arrived and helping set up several tours. Highly recommend!

Perfect Spot to truly experience Costa Rica

The house was off the beaten path and everything we were looking for- proximity to great hiking, Arenal, and bird watching- we even saw a Toucan early our first morning. There isn’t a lot of privacy for two of the 3 bedrooms and one of the bathrooms, but the beds were comfortable and the property provided what we needed.

Perfect Location for Exploring The Area

Waking up to the Arenal Volcano outside the front door every morning is something we will always remember. The location of this property made it the perfect location to relax as well as get out and visit this amazing region. It's extremely quiet and chill, yet not far from so many great things to do. Don't miss visiting the thermal springs and rivers! The kids loved the hammock and gazebo area, and especially the friendly neighborhood dogs. And once or twice every day we were treated to a cow parade on the road in front of the house as the locals took them to the river. We woke every morning to cool breezes and a cacophony of birdsong. The house itself has amazing hardwood cabinets and hardwood walls and was beautiful and spacious. There were sufficient dishes, pots and pans if you wanted to cook (we didn't - there is amazing food available everywhere - don't miss the "Sodas" which are their local restaurants, most with outdoor seating, we didn't have one bad meal). A large television with free Netflix in the living area. We would have liked a few more amenities (no zip lock bags were available for toilet tissue though the property info said they were provided; the bottle of "dish soap" for washing dishes appeared to be very watered down and didn't make suds or clean anything). We just headed to the local market to buy these and other items. Not a big deal to us, just giving a heads-up to others.

Jungle House

We enjoyed the house and the area a lot. It worked out great as they had a pack and play for our grandson and the house had everything you need or ask the care taker Erica. We did ask to ride the bikes but never heard where and how to use them. The volcano was in sight a few times with lots of birds, cows, horses and all the local dogs around.

Great family stay

Perfect layout and location for our multi-generational family trip. Home was beautiful, we loved the woodwork, windows and volcano view, tree full of birds right outside was spectacular every morning! Ericka was wonderful and so welcoming, we felt safe and a part of the community, she even helped facilitate our son playing soccer with the local kids, a major highlight for him! Recommendations for the soda at the bottom of the hill and hike to the campground at the very top were spot on, delicious food and amazing views. Easy access to Arenal and La Fortuna activities, most within 30-40 min, some just 15min! We had a 4x4 vehicle, not absolutely necessary but definitely more comfortable, especially after rain storms. Also recommend bringing large ziplock bags to store snacks and such in if you don’t want to keep all dry goods in the fridge to keep ants at bay. Directions were clear and we didn’t have issues except for a stray candy bar wrapper that got left in a back pack. Once we cleaned that up and we bagged all our goods, it was fine but learn from our mistakes! Overall absolutely amazing stay for our crew - 2 adults, 2 kids and a grandparent.

Wonderful Mountain side cabin

My family of 5 had a great 4 day stay here. Beautiful grounds/landscaping, and awesome view of Arenal if the clouds cooperate. Most of our time was spent out of the cabin in Arenal/LaFortuna which is about 40 minutes away. There are a few restaurants and a small market in the immediate area near the cabin. Ericka, the hostess was great- she even brought us a 1lb of coffee after we had fogotten to buy some. We found the kitchen to have the very basics, so if you are planning to cook a lot, come prepared with all you need... spices, foils, disposable baking trays, etc. Would stay again!

I am an accountant and live in Colorado. My favorite places to travel are Costa Rica - beautifully country and love the people, and Italy. I love being active and love to travel. I fell in love with Costa Rica - Specifically the Arenal Area as El Castillo is approximately 2000 feet above sea level in the rain forest where the temperature is moderate 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit with cooling breezes and beautiful countryside.
I cannot live without bicycling, skiing, my friends, my husband, books and Television - Almost but not necessarily in that order.
The most unforgettable book that I have ever read is The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. I love the Ender series by Orson Scott Card. My favorite adventure and espionage writer is Nelson Demille because he interjects humer into his main characters. I loved the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon about life in Scotland during its revolt with England and the early days of the settlement of America all combined with time travel.
Two of my most favorite travel destinations are Italy and Costa Rica and when I go I like to join bicycling tours and see the country by bike.
One of my favorite book series and movies was the Hunger Games. I loved the movies Top Gun and also Knights Tale and I mustn't forget The Princess Bride.
I am still a rock music enthusiast as it is very good listening for Biking, skiing and rollerblading. I also like Pucini Operas.
I have to confess that I am a gluttin for carbs which I must reduce at my age and have gotten into juicing. My favorite juice is Banana, green grapes, Orange, pineapple, spinach, slice of lime and crushed ice.
I supplied and decorated the house in a style and comfort pleasing to me as if I were to live there. The renting of my vacation home is a work in progress, and I am open to any and all suggestions because my aim is to ensure my guest's comfort and enjoym

Why they chose this property

I came to CR with a friend in January of 2012. I had been to Costa Rica before and had to come back. We stayed in El Castillo at another property nearby and looked into purchasing a property. I fell in love with this house the moment I saw it With it's fantastic view of the Volcano Arenal, and rolling hills and pasture land, and it's location in the village - very country and nestled in with the locals. Also there are many, many adventures within 1, 2, 3, and 5 kilometers of the house. The house is spacious and very cozy.
