About this property

Relaxing Lakefront (Lake Morey), near camps and Dartmouth

Steppingstone is a classic restored camp on the west side of Lake Morey. Can easily walk to Lake Morey Inn, Golf & Resort. The house is all on one level and is easily accessible via a fairly flat walkway from the road. Easy in and out with no major staircases to get to the house.

House located on lakeside of road. You do not have to cross street to get to lake.

The front has a lawn perfect for a lawn party or simply playing games with the children. Meanwhile if it’s lakefront access you want, simply go down the winding path of stepping stones in the back and enjoy lake living from the private dock.

The house contains 2 bedrooms, living room, full kitchen, dining area, sun room, and two decks off of main house. Each of the bedrooms has its own bathroom, each with its own tub & shower. Keeping with the ambiance and serenity of the lake there is no TV … which guests have said is a blessing … as it leaves more time for reading, talking with your kids, playing games, or simply enjoying the outdoors.

The mahogany wood deck off the sun-room provides an ideal spot for enjoying the lake view, reading, sun-bathing, barbequing, having hors d’oeuvres & cocktails, or outdoor dining as the sun sets.

The private deck/patio off the master bedroom offers views of the lake and mountains.

The property has parking for three cars. House is a short walk to public boat launch. Can rent boats at Fairlee Marine. Private dock available to tie up boat during your stay.

To help protect the new floors, we ask shoes be left in the front entry area.

Bedding and towels are provided. There is a full-sized refrigerator in the kitchen. There is a gas grill on the deck for your use, please replace the gas if you empty the container. All new pots and pans in 2022.

There is an indoor fireplace that you probably won’t need in the summer.

No smoking and no pets. We recycle everything. If you simply put all clean paper, plastic, glass and cans in one bag and other non-recyclable garbage in another we will take them to the dump.

House is equipped with wifi. We require a 5 night minimum stay.

It's All About the Lake
It was lovely to wake up to the lake views and to hang out on the deck. We enjoyed swimming off the private dock and going out in the two kayaks. As the description indicates, the stone steps to the dock are not for everyone. The rocks by the dock were wobbly, and that made it tricky to get the boats to the dock. We looked longingly at the wooden steps with railings that led to the docks of the properties on either side of this property. We cooked a few evenings and found that the kitchen has all needed utensils but rather old pans (I know that might sound churlish, but the cracked non-stick surfaces on a few of the pans made them a potential hazard, so we didn't use them). There were only two beach towels provided for four of us, so bring some towels -- and some soap for the showers. The room distribution made for good privacy for our group of adults, and there was plenty of room to socialize. We did enjoy the stay overall and just wished for a few upgrades. If you think "cabin/camp" and bring a few comfort items, you won't be disappointed.

Great week at Lake Morey
We loved our week at Stepping Stone! It is the quintessential New England lake house, with fabulous views of Lake Morey and its mountains. The pictures of the house are incredibly accurate, but do not do it justice. The house has a welcoming aura from the moment one opens the door on arrival with great views of the lake and many nice touches that make it a truly special place. The house is well equipped (you’ll find everything you need in the kitchen!) and is at the same time a perfect mix of comfy, rustic and elegant. We spent as much time as we could outdoors as well, and the furniture on the series of decks down to the lake and the dock made that all the more enjoyable. Ward is an excellent host who provided a wealth of background information and local hints and guidance about Lake Morey, Fairlee and the surrounding area. He was also incredibly responsive to our queries both before we arrived and while on site. We look forward to returning to Stepping Stone soon.

One of the truly "great" lake houses!
This lake cottage is pitch perfect. Exactly what I imagined, but better. The house is charming and well equipped for cooking and both indoor and outdoor fun. I enjoyed a swim most days in the beautiful clear waters of Lake Morey, usually followed by a lounge in the Adirondack chairs on the dock. The two decks are a perfect perch from which to eat, read, listen to loons, and watch the lake action. We also hiked several times in the area. Recommend food shopping at the Co-op in Hanover and many of the local farm stands nearby. I truly loved my two weeks here and can't wait to return.

Amazing place! Also, a lot of stairs.
We had an amazing week at Steppingstone! The lake and house are both very beautiful and restful, and the owner is very easy to communicate with. We very much hope to return. For those with mobility difficulties or very small children, this property could be difficult to navigate, as there are 70+ stairs (mostly stone), from the house to the water. It’s gorgeous, but I think all renters should know this in advance.

Excellent Stay at Stepping Stone
Stepping Stone was exactly what I hoped for in a lakefront Vermont getaway. Interior of cottage is roomy and comfortable with all the necessary amenities. Exterior offers wonderful lake views off the decks and a fantastic dock for swimming, fishing, boating etc.. Incredibly peaceful retreat with easy access to Hanover/Dartmouth and surrounding Upper Valley. Highlights included: Morning coffee lakeside on the dock - think beautiful sunrises, chipmunks frolicking and birds flying over the lake. Swimming, kayaking, golf, drive-in theater, Dartmouth campus, local markets and country stores. Highly recommend a day trip to Quechee Gorge & Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) I prepared most meals at the cottage (great kitchen & BBQ) but if you opt to dine-out, these venues did not disappoint: Fairlee Diner (breakfast) Lou's (breakfast/lunch/Pie) Lebanon Diner (breakfast) King Arthur Flour (lunch) Colatina Exit (pizza) Tuckerbox (dinner & worth the drive to White River) I highly recommended Stepping Stone for a classic VT lakefront vacation with excellent amenities and convenient access to the surrounding area. I can't wait to return!

Perfect Retreat
Stepping Stone was the perfect spot for a wonderful vacation, far from city worries and responsibilities. The fully equipped kitchen meant that we could pretty much stay put, alternating swimming and kayaking with reading -- and preparing some great meals. We did venture out, though, and based on the good recommendations of the owners, we enjoyed the soft-serve at Whippy Dip as well as the great "Farm Stand" in Thetford. On the last evening, we had a really wonderful dinner at Ariana's in Orford -- again, a recommendation of the owners. I grew up in the Upper Valley, so I know the landscape well, but Lake Morey itself is outstanding, and it was so lovely to wake up to the mist rising from the lake. The house was perfect for just two of us, but we imagined coming back with friends and/or family. We loved the décor -- it was very comfortable but open and airy. And although we always bring a few key kitchen tools with us, we didn't really need them. Although we spent most of our time on the lovely decks and sunning on the dock, the lawn and lovely border gardens are lovely, too. The location was easy to find, convenient, and remarkably quiet. It really was the perfect retreat for us and we look forward to returning in the very near future.

Charming, relaxing waterfront retreat
I have stayed at SteppingStone for the past few summers, and it has been the perfect place to get away and relax for a weekend or longer. The home itself embodies everything you want in a lakefront, mountain property. It's cozy, clean, and stocked with the basic amenities needed for a pleasant stay. The back deck overlooking the lake is perfect for early morning coffee or grilling out for dinner. The dock receives ample sun and the provided adirondack chairs encourage lazy days spent reading or swimming in the lake. The home is a quick car or bike ride to the main part of town (Fairlee) where you can enjoy ice cream at Whippy Dip, browse antique shops, or enjoy dinner at the local resort. The drive-in movie showings are also not to be missed! SteppingStone is a close drive to larger Vermont/New Hampshire towns should you wish to do a little shopping or stroll through the beautiful Dartmouth campus. There are hiking trails surrounding Fairlee lake, and SteppingStone also features kayaks for those who want to enjoy a more active experience. The owners have truly thought of everything you could want and/or need to enjoy an authentic, comfortable New England vacation. I highly recommend the property and plan on returning this summer!

Stepping stone is a must!
I recently had the pleasure of enjoying a long weekend at Stepping Stone. The view alone from the back porch makes this place a 10! We took full advantage of all the resources provided by our lovely hosts. Weekend was full of lazy mornings in the sun-filled home, coffee on the porch,, reading on the lakeside dock, swimming in the lake, kayaking in the afternoon, and then grilling out for dinner on the back porch. There wasn't much reason to leave this precious location, but we managed to fit in a hike or two, visits to town (hello Whippy Dip!), and a few drive-in movies nearby. The hosts are great and the house is equipped with anything you may need during your stay. It is a convenient location; just a short walk to the public beach if you crave sand in your toes and a quick drive/bike ride to the town. Loved my time at Stepping Stone and can't wait to go back soon!

Great Vermont Get-A-Way
I have been renting Steppingstone for a week or two every summer for the last four years, and I can't say enough about it. The cottage, the lake, Fairlee, Whippy Dip, Ariana's Restaurant, the mountains, the people all make for a wonderful and relaxing time. Coffee on the upper deck overlooking the sun rising over the lake, followed by a walk around it, is a prefect way to start each day. I recommend it highly!

Wonderful Retreat
We spent five nights at SteppingStone early in September of 2012, and in a word it was WONDERFUL! Highlights included sipping morning coffee on the deck while watching mist drift over the lake as the sun rose, sitting on the dock lakeside reading, kayaking, riding bikes around the lake and through surrounding towns, lobster rolls and soft-serve from the Whippee Dipp in Fairlee, dancing at the golf club on Saturday night, playing bocce ball on the front lawn, having a glass of wine and watching the light on the trees and lake change. The cottage kitchen is very well stocked so we were able to cook and eat in, as we like to do. The view of the lake is so peaceful, and it's very tempting to just sit and watch the time go by from the gorgeous deck or the homey and comfortable main living areas. The cottage has a very open feel and is very welcoming. While we didn't have occasion to use the fireplace, the huge armchairs in the living room are very inviting and a great place to read a good book. We will definitely return!
