Great Place to Stay!

The cottage is very cute and is in a gorgeous area. My family had a great time at nearby towns and the beach is perfect! Todd is great! He was quick to answer all of our questions and was the perfect host! We would recommend this cottage to anyone!

Relaxation!!

If you want a place to unwind and relax in the peacefulness of the woods with just a quick step to the beautiful waters of Lake Michigan then this cottage is for your family. Our family of 5 did well and loved the atmosphere on the deck. The kitchen is fully stocked to cook. I would highly recommend this place and we hope to return again in the future.

Perfectly Quiet Vacation Spot

We spent 4 wonderful nights at this beautiful cottage! Todd was a wonderful host and we couldn’t have asked for a better vacation spot. The beach is a short walk through the woods and was basically empty the entire week. The cottage itself was quaint and the perfect spot for our family vacation, including a 7 year old. The upstairs deck is especially relaxing. It’s located equally from Grand Haven and Holland, and only a bit further to Saugatuck. We would highly recommend this spot!

Cozy cottage

We had a great relaxing week on our vacation. We enjoyed playing board games and relaxing on the porch while at the house. The private beach with its white sand and clear clean water was beautiful. I felt like I was at the ocean minus the salt water and shells. We enjoyed having a camp fire in one of the fire rings on our last night. Todd is a great host

Fabulous Deck

Spent a week here with my elderly mother in late August and we both really enjoyed our stay. It's a lovely combination of early 20th-century cottage with updated appliances and somewhat quirky decor. We spent much of our time on the wonderful deck--mostly secluded, covered by trees, and bordered with potted flowering plants. In the age of COVID, it was a great place to host a few extended family members, socially distanced. I spent some time on the beach (easy to get to), usually late in the day, and loved the fact that it was mostly empty. Even though the weather was the 80s most of the time, we were not warm inside. The only real criticism I would have is that there were a few days when we would have welcomed a dehumidifier.

Charming beach cottage

This is a perfect place to spend time in this friendly beach community. The cottage has a very relaxing feel, has everything you might need and is beautifully decorated and put together. The outside space is the star attraction and adds ‘rooms’ - pretty, inviting and set up just right for hanging out , eating and cooking. We had a great time and would happily stay again.

Great getaway, isolated but not too much!

We had a great getaway at Todd's lake cottage. If anything it was even better than the pictures, with a lot of charm and class. Todd is an avid gardener and it shows, even in this woodland setting. The cottage was also well situated - high above the lake and with lots of windows - to get natural breezes, and we didn't find the lack of A/C to be any problem at all. Access to the private beach is available by either walking to the end of the road and then down a bunch of steps, or by driving through a private gate to a small parking lot and then walking along a boardwalk - we used both. When using the second, we were able to use our wagon with beach wheels to take more gear, and it was perfect for this situation. Most of the locals use golf carts. We saw several amazing sunsets from the beach! Todd provided an information packet via email before our trip and a hard copy in person, and we found this very useful. We went kayaking; we visited Holland, Grand Haven, and Saugatuck; and the kids (teens) went blueberry picking. As others have said the cottage was well equipped, which we haven't always found to be the case with vacation rentals. Also as others have mentioned, the lower level is completely separate from the upper level. This was kind of nice for us - like having our own private suite (although TV noise does carry upstairs.) Also there is open loft space above the two upstairs bedrooms, so they are not entirely private either. This was all fine with our group but maybe not for everyone. In all it was a great trip and we would definitely go back!

Wonderful retreat and easy access to Lake Michigan shores

My husband and 2 adult children absolutely LOVED this cottage for many reasons. It is very charming. The decor is so well thought out, interesting, comfortable. We loved the feeling of being in a secluded cottage but with easy access to restaurants, etc. Because it is a part of an older association there is a sense of ease, history, and being well loved by all those lucky enough to be a part of this wonderful place. The magnificent Lake Michigan with all of it's beauty is just foot steps away. Todd's attention to detail including the beautiful deck's were very much enjoyed with the plants, flowers, etc. We spent much time on the decks. We also liked the fact that the downstairs offers a complete separate retreat. Everything that we needed was available. I can't say enough good things about how much we all loved the absolute charm of this cottage. Also, Todd was very prompt and easy to work with and his man on the site, Mike, was great with walking us through the ins and outs of our stay. For the record- I am not related to Todd in any way- I'm just a person that was lucky enough to find this cottage on VRBO.

Rustic Cottage in Port Sheldon

My daughter and her family stayed for two weeks in the cottage and they found it charming and especially enjoyed the deck. Their only complaint was the lack of air conditioning since it was hot and humid for most of their stay. The cottage is surrounded by trees so the house stayed fairly cool but the humidity you can only remove with air conditioning. We plan to rent again in the future.

Charming cottage nestled among the trees

The cottage is very private quietly nestled in the trees. Sitting on the deck felt like being in a treehouse! Very cool! The cottage had a lot of charm and Todd had thought of our every need including rounding up a baby gate for our one year old granddaughter. That being said the layout of the cottage was not convenient with small children. We didn’t realize you had to use outside stairs to reach the bedroom, bath, and sitting room on the lower level. We would stay here again but without the little ones along.

Delightful

I have to say, your cottage is so charming! I am amazed at how you utilized every little space and made it functional. Your small kitchen has to be one of the most efficient and well equipped that I have ever seen! To top that off, you have provided so many areas for people to spread out and have their own space if needed. I enjoyed relaxing on the patio and watching a squirrel run from tree to tree pulling off the acorns and then letting them drop to the ground! When a humming bird made an appearance one morning, it was such a wonderful surprise! And to add to all of this, some of your neighbors were very friendly. So, yes, we did have a relaxing weekend and we were so glad to have chosen your condo over the others.

Port Sheldon's get-away destination

For the past three years, a visit to this cabin has been the highlight of my travel experiences for the year. The first two years, my visits coincided with the September/October ArtPrize events in Grand Rapids, an easy half-hour drive inland. (It's one of the largest arts' events in the world and attracts artists and collectors from all over.) Vacations for me include spreading some oil paint on a new canvas or pushing a pencil across the paper in my drawing pad...this cabin on the dunes has been the perfect "get-away" destination for me! It provides a quiet, secluded studio atmosphere with plenty of space to entertain or just kick back and loaf! This year, my schedule allowed me an early-summer three weeks on the Lake Michigan shore. Arriving in earlier in the summer meant something new during my Michigan visits: evenings of theater at Hope College in Holland, MI, just a 20-minute drive away. Saugatuck Center for the Arts also offers a strong summer theater season. There are many wonderful restaurants, quaint shops and galleries available in Holland, Saugatuck, Grand Haven and Grand Rapids. At the cabin, having the separate lower level meant my guests had a more private space to seclude themselves with a good book or movie. The center of activities for me -- other than the long walks in the dunes or painting along the shore -- is always in the upper level of the cabin. The gas grill and large deck make a perfect combination for memorable family gatherings. While I could talk about being used to having a dish washer or disposal at home, the absence of them in this cabin created some nice opportunities for quiet family times together. (Like many of my friends, I grew up hearing "Do you want to wash or dry?") I've met so many wonderful people on my visits to this Port Sheldon cabin -- folks who live there full-time as well as people who come in for a week (or two) vacation. I understand some of the people who rent this cabin will bring their boat and spend days fishing near the docks on the lake or heading out onto the Lake Michigan for one of the fishing tournaments. I think about half the people who live there full-time also have a kayak and spend sunny afternoons paddling past the docks and beaches. I'm looking forward to future visits to Port Sheldon. (I'm still trying to figure out a way to get to ArtPrize this year....oh, well, there's always next year!) I give this rental my highest ratings.

Why they chose this property

The current owners are 4th generation family members who have been part of Port Sheldon Beach Association since the 1930's. The cottage is still enjoyed each summer by family and now open to small families to relax in our summer paradise.

What makes this property unique

The open air indoor living spaces and outdoor deck are combined with a large 8 foot sliding glass door and many original 6 panes windows surrounding all sides of the cottage. There is no central A/C but most times it is not needed. It is like a tree house with shimmering Lake Michigan water through the woods. Private beach access steps from the cottage and private boat dock available upon request.
