About this property

Pet friendly 3 bedroom house.

Situated on its own private grounds, this renovated barn is the perfect place for your vacation in the country. It has a bright and spacious open plan interior. Bedrooms 1 and 2 share a bathroom and, bedroom 3 on the ground floor has an en suite bathroom. Entering the barn through the French windows into the hall on the ground floor you notice the original oak beams above and the banisters edging the dining room, landing and living room on the upper floor. On the right is the door to the ensuite bedroom which, together with the hall, has a view of the garden to the south. Ahead of you, the stairs rise to the upper floor reaching the landing which leads right to the kitchen & dining room and left to the living room, bedrooms and bathroom. French windows from the dining room lead to a patio and the upper garden.
The large garden and oak wood are fully fenced. Some areas are mown whilst others are left to grow in summer to encourage wild life. There is a small fenced off pond and some hedgehog refuges dotted around. I do not use pesticides.
Close to St Aulaye, the tiny hamlet of La Ganetie is on a hill above the Dronne valley with countryside views across the valley. The river Dronne and local lakes are great for fishing. In summer both Aubeterre and St Aulaye create riverside beaches with restaurants and river swimming. You may hire canoes and paddle down the rivers having great fun when you hit the unexpected shutes! There are sign posted walks along the river and through the forests all around. After a busy day exploring the vin yards, historical sites, Art galleries and beautiful countryside of the Perigord vert.

The garden is very pretty in Spring with cherry, apple and plum blossom and the song of the nightingales, In summer and autumn the cherries, apples, plums and figs are ripe to eat.
'Katy's barn' is divided into two apartments in the same building. I and my dogs live permanently in another part of the barn so that when you come to stay we will share the garden. As the garden is so big and includes different areas and levels, you will have space to relax and play.
Local Area: Close by, the historic Market town of St Aulaye has amenities such as a bank, restaurants, Art galleries and shops including a good sized Carrefour Contact supermarket which stays open till 7pm. (except Sunday when it closes at 1pm) In the summer enjoy the beach and the swimming in the River Dronne where there is a playground and café/restaurant which frequently hosts live music and entertainment. You may stroll from the barn to Chenaud where you can see the Chateau and Mill beside the river and there are plenty of woodland and riverside walks close by. Riberac, Chalais and Aubeterre are all within twenty minutes drive and provide further opportunities for exploration, marketing and shopping.
Activities:
This is a good base for day trips to interesting places in the region including west to the coast or inland to Lascaux, and the many historic towns and cities of the Dordogne.
Walking and cycling - there are many way-marked trails in the area. The little winding lanes and white roads provide good routes along the river and through the forests and hills.
Horse riding. (It is best to book this before you arrive as the stables get very busy in the summer)
Cycling: There are a number of bike hire companies which will deliver the bikes to your door step.
Bird watching. A variety of birds of prey live and breed in the area. Buzzards are the most common but I frequently see Black kites, hen harriers, kestrels and merlins.
Wild animals such as deer and wild boar are common in the forests. The garden has a number of refuges for hedgehogs and other small animals such as the green speckled lizard.
There are lakes and rivers for fishing, canoeing or swimming.
Visit historical sites including Roman villas, Romanesque churches, pre-historic cave paintings and carvings, the Museum of Pre-history.

Suitable flights from UK. (These have probably changed due to Covid 19)
Easy jet flies to Bordeaux from Liverpool, Gatwick and Bristol
Jet2.com: Leeds Bradford to Bergerac.
Ryanair: Bristol to Bergerac. East midlands and Stansted to La Rochelle. Leeds Bradford and Liverpool to Limoges.

Katy’s Barn is like a home from home. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were numerous repeat bookings. It is very pretty with lots of beams. The is so much light and a fantastic feeling of space. There’s a lovely garden; fenced in for dogs. The area is really lovely. Katy is right nearby and very friendly and helpful. She very kindly did a bit of supermarket shopping for me before our arrival. I consider myself to be a fussy customer but I would certainly stay again and recommend to anyone.

A beautiful barn in a quiet and secluded location but with nearby town
We spent a very happy three weeks at the barn. The accommodation was lovely, plenty big enough for the whole family and very comfortable. The garden was a delight, really safe for our two dogs who loved the space. The location is perfect for exploring; the two local towns of Chalais and Riberac are both lovely and have fantastic markets. You are also near enough to Angoulême, St Émilion and Bergerac for visits. The local restaurant is not to be missed. The local village has a great supermarket too. All in all it was just perfect and Katy was the most thoughtful, kind host. Thank you so much for a wonderful holiday.

Wij hebben van ons oponthoud zeer genoten! Zeer vriendelijk onthaal.

A great place to stay
The property was spacious and well equipped. The photos didn't do it justice. The Barn was in a quiet location but with plenty to do and explore within a short drive away.

Fantastic barn conversion, great facilities, huge garden
We (6 adults in total) stayed here for 2 weeks in August 2017, the barn in an amazing conversion retaining all of the original beams and character - there so much space you'll never feel crowded and the garden must be almost an acre in size - just brilliant

The barn was gorgeous better than the photos had suggested.
We stayed for three weeks with our dog Olive who loved the big garden which is fully fenced. The local beach by the river was brilliant and going in the last three weeks of September meant we had this to ourselves. The surrounding area was so peaceful and pretty. We visited a lot of the local larger villages and markets and eat out at lunchtime at chalais and aubereterre sur dronne which was a gorgeous local village with a lovely square of restaurants. We would like to thank Mark and Jenny who looked in on us once a week to make sure everything was ok and to bring fresh bedding and towels. We have to say that this is the best area of France and will be coming back again next year.

Very peaceful barn location
The property is a converted barn with the social accommodation all on the second floor. Divided into two halves it would work extremely well for a social group. Lots of space. The garden was large and was adored by our dog! The property is a short 20 min walk to the centre of St Aulaye (or a 5minute drive), where there is a supermarket for all your basic needs. The river nearby has a beach and is a wonderful place to relax. Overall the place was very peaceful and ideal for a relaxing holiday.

Serenity in rural France
We really enjoyed our 5 week stay in La Genetie Barn. Despite the weather being unseasonably cool it did not stop us enjoying the locality and indeed the house itself. The Barn presented a fantastic stage for our extended holiday in France. A constant flow of friends and relatives from the UK ensured some lively evenings. The atmosphere was extremely relaxed and the support provided by Mark and Jenny was marvellous. We missed our canine companions who unfortunately could not make the trip from Australia but they would have loved the garden and the many walks in the surrounding lanes and forests. The markets, especially Ribourac on a Friday morning, were an absolute experience to be enjoyed. And finally we recommend Bergourac for a day trip, as the most attractive town locally while not being a tourist trap (at least in May). In summary, we had a wonderful vacation which will be hard to replicate anywhere else.

Beautiful location for a refreshing holiday.
We all enjoyed a very peaceful holiday at the Barn. The facilities were great and exactly as described. Katy and Jenny were very helpful . There are some good places to visit nearby including the kayaking at St Aulaye, or relaxing in the hamlet is also very pleasant. We would definitely recommend this property and hope to visit again.

Autumnal idyll
The cottage we found as described after almost 24 hours travelling from Canada. We stopped briefly to visit a relative in Bonnes then Jenny provided directions and met us at the barn at 9.30pm. Absolutely everything we needed was present with Sally finding all equipment necessary to cater for a dinner party before we left, even coming to terms with the unfamiliar oven. After our first week of complete relaxation, exploration of the library and use of the woodburner, Mark came round to replenish the woodpile. In our second week , the weather was much nicer and our walks longer, through the woods to Puymangou and its small chateau being the most adventurous. We travelled further, to Dommes with its wonderful panorama of the Dordogne valley, to Cognac and to Perigueux and elsewhere. It being off-season we were able to get around and visit the most interesting places easily without the normal crush. The downside of course being many more commercial places are closed, even Le Sud in Bonnes closed after our visit on our second night for their annual break. We enjoyed the ability to eat at home with a nice bottle of wine, to visit friends or to dine out, the highlight being Le Lavoir at Siorac de Riberac. How I long for a clone of that establishment and its proprietor in the Prairies. We visited the markets locally in Chalais and Riberac, preferred Riberac and can still taste the wonderful cheese purchased there. Looking forward to another visit with other family members earlier in the autumn next year if diaries will allow. Thank you again Jenny, Mark and Katy

Relaxing Getaway
A wonderful relaxing stay at Katy's Barn in the last week in October. The amazingly warm weather meant that we enjoyed the out door space. The garden is safe for dogs , and our Labrador had a great time, exploring the lovely garden.Despite the warm days it was cool enough in the evenings for us to fire up the lovely wood burning stove, for nice cozy evenings. Great walks to Chenaud from barn, or the Grand Etang Jemeye had lovely walks round the lake or through the woods. We even managed a dip in the lake! Markets at Chalais (mon) and Riberac (fri) had lots of local produce and character. Day trips to Brantome and St Emillion. within easy reach. But most of all we enjoyed just relaxing in the barn and the garden, enjoying the views and the wildlife.

We've just re booked for 5 weeks in the Spring!
Our first impression upon arrival at Katy's barn was Wow! Such a beautiful barn in a stunning location. Just the 2 of us with our 2 dogs stayed for 2 weeks. The barn itself is spacious, light & airy with loads of space to store bikes etc - not too large for 2 people but also we would imagine a great space for up to 6 people Jenny & Mark couldn't be more helpful & were always on hand to offer help & assistance if needed, as well as lots of advice on where to visit in the area. The area itself is very pretty & although rural it is in striking distance of both the pretty town of St Aulaye & the larger town of Chalais which has a market on Monday mornings. As other reviewers have mentioned it is a perfect place if you have dogs, the large garden is totally enclosed & the barn has wooden & tiled floors throughout. There are loads of walks in the area, a particular favourite of ours was along by the river in Chenaud (about 1km away) We had a day in Bordeaux, which was a beautiful city & very easy to get to by train. We drove to Coutras (1/2 hour away) left our car in the free parking & then took the easy journey by train that cost about 20 euros per person return. We also visited Bergerac, Sarlat, St Emilion, Aubeterre & Brantome to name but a few. The barn is very well equipped & we generally ate in most evenings. We did have a couple of meals out, one at the Chateaux in Chalais which was good but a little expensive, also Bar le Sud in Bonnes is good, but only if you are missing fellow Brits as although the chef is French (& the food very tasty) not a word of French is to be heard! We would definitely recommend a stay here, so much so that we have re booked to come & live the French life for 5 weeks next Spring. Top tip - If you stay for more than a week, Katy gives a discount on subsequent weeks! The only things that we didn't get on so well with was that the pillows were very soft (so we might bring our own next time) & the best bedroom had twin beds in it so we ended up pushing them together in the hope that one of us didn't fall down the gap in the middle! The wardrobes were a bit old & musty & so we didn't feel we wanted to put our clothes in them & the gas cooker in the kitchen seemed to cook everything at full blast even when turned down low. Other than that everything & more than you would expect from a holiday cottage. Many, many thanks to Katy, Jenny & Mark & Rusty too!

A beautiful haven of peace in SW France
Our family (4) spent 2 weeks here. It's a secluded setting in a tranquil hamlet near the Dordogne - Charente border, with great views from the house and garden to the rolling wooded landscape beyond. The house is a stunning barn conversion on two levels, with direct access to the garden from both levels. It is clean and well-maintained, with modern facilities throughout. There's plenty of space and light. On one side of the vast upper level there's a well-equipped kitchen and dining area. On the other side is a large sitting area with comfy seating, TV, wifi and a well-stocked bookcase - this was a great area to relax in. The giant exposed roof beams and central balustrade add to the sense of space. The large gently-sloping garden is very secluded. It features a large outhouse close to the main barn, which offers a covered eating/sitting area. We ate here most of the time. The garden also has an oak wood along the top border - sit up there under the shade, read a book, enjoy the views across the valley, achieve inner peace! We found the location was ideal for local amenities (St Aulaye, 5 mins by car) as well as trips further afield (Bordeaux, approx. 1 hr). The surrounding area has lots to offer families. There's a nice swimming area with a sandy beach on the river at St. Aulaye, next to an open-air restaurant. Nearby Chalais (15 mins) has a big market on Mondays. The beautiful village of Aubeterre (15 mins) has some good places to eat, and the subterranean monolithic church is well worth a visit. You can also hire kayaks on the beautiful Dronne river - descending the weir was fun. On our arrival the manager was friendly and helpful, and we had a hassle-free stay. I'd highly recommend this rental to anyone who wants a relaxing French holiday in beautiful surroundings. We'll certainly be back.

Rural France
We travelled as a family of 6 (parents and adult children and partners) and found Katy's Barn to be perfectly positioned for a relaxing holiday enjoying long lunches in picture box perfect French villages and towns and the Barn to return to for sociable evenings in. There is plenty to see and do within an hour's drive of the property, excellent Friday market at nearby Riberac or if you choose to stay put the Barn provides a huge and thoughtfully designed space to relax in with a great family kitchen/dining area and masses of utensils, pots and pans for cooking. We all appreciated the WiFi and the different outside areas for playing ball games or just quietly reading. We all had a fabulous time and have very happy memories. A big thank you to Katy and Jenny.

Peace & Tranquility in the countryside
If you want a relaxing, peaceful holiday but with amenities not too far away and even want take your dog/s then Katy's Barn is the perfect place. The location offers French countryside at its best with nearby towns offering local historical interest and Saint Aulaye is a lovely real French small town. The barn gives one open plan space to spread out and relax and the atmosphere created by the conversion is superb. If you desire you can still keep in touch with the 'real' world as Katy has all the wi fi, tv, ipod techy stuff working very well. It was great to have a meet and greet from Jenny and Mark who were not far away if we needed assistance. Thank you. If you love nature and animals then the environment around the barn won't disappoint. Thanks Katy.

Lovely Barn In A Superb Location
Katy's barn was, for us, in an ideal holiday situation. Just outside Saint Aulaye in tranquil and beautiful countryside. The barn had been carefully and thoughtfully restored and although blending perfectly into the surrounding countryside it was very well equipped with all modern equipment inside including satellite TV, modern kitchen appliances and so on. Everything we needed was there. Outside was a patio area with table and chairs, a BBQ, sun loungers and a lovely covered outdoor dining area complete with table and chairs. There was a nice large garden where our two dogs enjoyed the freedom to roam around safely without us worrying about traffic. There was plenty to do and see in the surrounding area and further away places like Bordeaux, Sarlat, Brantôme and Bergerac were well within a comfortable day out. Many folk appear to think it’s maybe going to be a stressful day out to Bordeaux and so they don’t bother going. We found it easy to get there and found a car park as soon as we arrived. Allow plenty of time and leave early to get there (we left the barn around 09:15) and you will be rewarded with a great day out in a beautiful city steeped in history and culture. Not to be missed! What else can I say about Katy’s Barn?……………… We just loved the place and will be back! P.S. Thanks to Jenny for her welcome and help.

Relax and unwind in style.
Situated on the outskirts of Chenaud (on the river Dronne which marks the border of the Charente and north Dordogne), this property has been converted to a very high standard and is extremely spacious. (Exactly as described). We drove down from Le Havre and were made very welcome by Jenny on arrival. House was very clean and basics provided (tea/coffee/milk etc...).There is a good selection of shops and restaurants within a few minutes drive (we loved Le Sud restaurant in Bonnes - staff speak French and English and were very helpful - food is excellent. Our 3 year old dog was on holiday with us and had a whale of a time - huge garden and lots of lovely walks in the immediate vicinity. We split our time between chilling out at the barn and doing more "touristy" - visits to nearby towns - Aubeterre, Villebois la Vallette, Brantome, Perigueux, and Eymet to name but a few - lots to see and do, and lots of photo opportunities. Would have no hesitation in recommending this property for relaxing holidays.

Fantastic accommodation in a perfect spot!
This accommodation is in a beautiful little enclave of houses but feels a million miles from anywhere. Katy's Barn is a real gem, close to everything yet tranquil and peaceful too. The drive from Bergerac Airport was incredibly easy and took 90 minutes. The location of the barn is spot on, literally a 3 minute drive (if that) from a great new Carrefour Contact store that provides everything you could need food and drink wise with long opening hours. You can be in the village of St Aulaye with more commerce in a few minutes more and for more shopping or a bigger supermarket (Le Clerc) Riberac is about 25 minutes away by car. Whilst we were staying at Katy's Barn we took the train from Coutras (approx 30 minutes away by car) to Bordeaux which took 35 minutes costing Eur 16 per person return and had a great day in this beautiful and interesting city - allow a full day it's bigger than we thought! The Barn itself has been lovingly restored and the fixtures and fittings were all very nice, there is a new kitchen which is very stylish and has every mortal thing that you could want including matches to light the burners, tea light candles, and all the essentials (bottle opener, bottle opener and bottle opener etc!) There were a few nice touches when we arrived, we were personally met by the owner's sister-in-law Jenny who is a lovely lady, shown around and left with a bottle of wine, sugar, tea, coffee, milk and plenty of loo roll - usually the types of thing that you immediately need but invariably forget and which is usually not provided at these places. A couple of evenings, the temperature outside dropped and we lit one of the burners, it was incredibly cosy and we felt so at home there, the wood for the burner was provided and very plentiful. On a final note, I did spend quite a lot of time trying to work out how I could get the hand painted wash hand basins into my massive Ryanair sized hand luggage, but sadly they had to be left behind - they really are lovely. Thank you Katy, Jenny and Mark for providing us with the perfect spot for our lovely Dordogne trip - until next time!

Katy's Barn, Saint Aulaye
We had a most enjoyable holiday at Katy's Barn in Saint Aulaye. The accommodation has been extremely well formed in a sympathetically coverted barn. The barn is spacious and provided with all you require. The location is very peaceful with views across the tranquil countryside typical of this part of France. All amenties are available locally in Saint Aulaye and nearby towns and villages. The beach on the river at Saint Aulaye is lovely and great for children and swimming with good food available at the beach cafe/restaurant. Nearby Aubeterre Sur Dronne is a lovely village with numerous good restaurants. We also enjoyed visiting Bergerac and Perigeaux and have previously visited other towns in the area such as Brantome and Saint Emillion. We love the area and would highly recommend the comfort of Katy's barn for your stay

10/10 Excellent

Family Holiday ~ May 2011
What an amazing place to stay... Katy's barn was simply wonderful, exuding character, spacious, immaculately presented and extremely well equipped. Everything and more than you could possibly want to enjoy a relaxing and peacefull holiday. An abundance of wonderful places to visit and an opportunity to experience the joy of rural France. We were made to feel very welcome and all our needs were extremely well catered for... this was particulary important as we had a young child with us. Thank you for making such a wonderful holiday possible.

In September 2017 I moved permanently to France. I had been working in Brunei for 21 years teaching Art and Design to pre-University Students. During the winter I use my indoor studio space and in summer there is plenty of space out-doors for my Art work. In September 2019 I fostered a Breton Spaniel from the pound at Cognac, he has now become a permanent resident at the Barn.

Why they chose this property

During my first visit to the barn, walking around what was then an overgrown field, gusts of white butterflies rose from the long grass and the wild flowers and shafts of afternoon sun shone through the oaks and across the field. It made me feel joyful. I decided straight away that that was the place for me.
Inside this field was a big stone barn which had housed wagons, a hay loft and a cow byre. I bought the property in 2007 and the conversion to human habitation was completed by 2010.
The garden has oak woodland at the top. The garden is wildlife friendly so I do not use pesticides. There are refuges for hedgehogs and a small pond in a fenced area to encourage frogs and newts. The flowering shrubs encourage bees, butterflies and other interesting insects as well as birds. The mown areas are people friendly and the meadow is to encourage wild flowers.

What makes this property unique

Walking, cycling or driving through this beautiful countryside and the historic villages of the region is a joyful experience. The area is full of places to visit and the barn is centrally placed for day trips to the coast or to the prehistoric caves to the east. 'Katy's Barn' is only a short trip to the river (about 2 Km) where there is a beach and a lovely swimming spot. The river-side restaurant and bar also has a huge television where important sporting events are shown.
