About this property

Lodging at our historic family ranch established in 1889

The lodge has a history of offering lodging to a number of other elite visitors and has previously been an Orvis Endorsesd Fly Fishing Lodge. Today you can enjoy the lodge as your own private home located on a stunning historic ranch that the Wallop family has owned since 1889.

In our own travels, we look for a place to kick off our shoes and breathe deep. Getting away from the hustle and bustle of life is yours for the taking if you like. However, if you are seeking a more active stay there are many things within Sheridan County to partake in. To name a few there is both Low Goal and High Goal Polo during the summertime. The Sheridan WYO Rodeo, The Brinton Museum, Just LeDoux It Restaurant in Big Horn and just a short drive away is the charming Cowboy town of Sheridan.

The Big Horn National Forest is only minutes from the Lodge where there is a Trail system that will awe you during your hikes. There are many mountain lakes and streams to fish or to take a sketch book and capture the beautiful mountain images.

There is so much more to our community with too many to list or do justice to the descriptions. Big Horn, Wyoming in Sheridan County is among the most special places on earth.

A Comfortable Family Cabin with Beautiful Mountain Views

We enjoyed the spacious cabin that provided a fabulous kitchen area, comfortable great room and sleeping loft, and huge front porch for taking in the breathtaking view. Sandra and Paul were gracious and friendly. The cabin exceeded our expectations and we would most definitely like to return in the future.

Wonderful experience!

Wonderful lodge, wonderful area and wonderful owners! The kitchen is awesome. I am already having griddle withdrawls! 13 of us stayed very comfortably between this lodge and the Hay Meadows house. Ultimately relaxing!!! Great fishing nearby and wildlife watching right on the front porch.

Great experience, great place to stay.

My family and I are beach people. Initially, we were hesitant to venture out of our comfort zone and head to Wyoming. But from the VRBO photos, we thought it was a chance worth taking and we were rewarded handsomely. Our trip to Wyoming was one of the best family vacations we ever had. There were beautiful vistas, fantastic weather, a variety of terrains to explore, wonderful stars at night, and a large list of things to do with the family. Having the house on the ranch in Big Horn made our stay even more memorable. There were two families totaling 10 people for our stay (four adults and six kids in the age range of 9 to 15). Everyone had a bed and slept comfortably. The view from the front porch was majestic and no photo can do it justice. I enjoyed a cup of coffee every morning while soaking in the view. The kitchen was fully stocked and would impress any chef. It was great for cooking and provided ample space for multiple people to prep food. As for the kids, all of them completely forgot about their electronic devices for the week. We turned on the TV once and it was only to see if it worked. The rest of the time was spent outside and there were plenty of adventures to take advantage of. We went to the park reservoir and swam in clear waters surrounded by mountains. We went horseback riding. We visited the super-cool main strip of downtown Sheridan. We took a day trip through Big Horn National Forest and walked the trail of Shell Falls. We headed north to Montana for a day and walked the grounds of General Custer's last stand. And the icing on the cake...it was Rodeo week. We experienced the true spirit of the West and saw Indian Relays, Barrel Racing, Bronco Riding, and Bull Riding. Some amazing athleticism all around. We even got to watch a Polo Match. I always thought of it as a stuffy game but it turns out the fans and the players could not be nicer. Sandra and Paul stopped by to check on us multiple times. They were very hospitable and responsive to all of our questions. They also gave us the inside scoop on great places to visit and restaurants to eat. It won't be the last time I set foot in Wyoming. One noteworthy item--make sure you rent a four-wheel drive vehicle. You'll need it for many of the day trips if you're interested in exploring.

What a view!

We rented this property to be close to Sheridan and to host our two-year old granddaughter's birthday party. It was perfect. The house had a dining room easily seating 16 even though we only had 8 adults. The kitchen had every gadget and serving piece we needed for a whole week of cooking. The owners were on property and responded quickly to every question. The front porch is to die for along with an everchanging variety of wildlife. The Merchantile in Big Horn has delicious pizza. We waited too long to visit the Brinton Museum nearby, which was closed on Monday and Tuesdays. The downtown area in Sheridan was thriving and great for shopping and dining. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We did enjoy a day trip to Little Big Horn National Park in Montana. We definately recommend this rental.

AMAZING

There is no way to describe the beauty of this place. It's something dreams are made of. You have got to see it for yourself. So peaceful. Grab a cup of coffee in the morning and sit on the porch and just look at the beauty. Also, lots of atv trails in the Bighorns and mountain streams to play in! The owner Sandra and Paul are so humble and truly grateful for what they have. Such wonderful people and so down to earth, so easy to talk to. We are blessed to have met them. We are already planning our next trip back!

A true respite at the foot of the Bighorns

It's hard to convey how relaxing this place was each morning. You look out at the awe-inspiring mountain views from the front porch. Sitting and sipping your coffee. The presence of the horses only made it more idyllic. The lodge was amazing inside with plenty of space for the 5 of us to spread out. And plenty of space for the 5 of use to gather in the kitchen, dining, and common areas. The commercial-grade kitchen was fun to cook in and came equipped with everything you could ever need. The owners were congenial and casual. Greeting us on the evening we arrived. They were easy to communicate with before arrival. We're grateful for being able to stay at such a special place!

Ranch life at it's best

We went for the views and were not disappointed. Add to that the beautiful home with everything you could possibly need or want. Cattle in the pastures, horses and wide open spaces were relaxing and rejuvenating. Sandra checked in on us and was both accomodating and gracious. Thumbs up!

Perfect mountain getaway

The home was amazing! The owners have thought of everything you could possibly need- plus some. They are both kind, generous, helpful and accommodating. While we were here for our summer vacation we enjoyed every single second taking in what the area has to offer. The scenery/views from the home are breathtaking. My family can not wait to come back!!

Family reunion at the Lodge

A lot of planning went into a family get-together in Big Horn - We had relatives from FL., OH, TX and Colorado - Ten in one family stayed at the Lodge, the others elsewhere in Big Horn, but we had most of our meals, games and relaxing time at the Lodge. It was perfect for everyone - from a 3 yr old to grandparents. 6 small children, plus teens had so much fun running around outside and playing outdoor games, hiking, and exploring - We could join in or sit on the very comfortable and shaded porch and watch the activity - with the gorgeous view of the Bighorns as a backdrop. The lodge was comfortable - plush linens on all the beds, plenty of bathrooms, and a completely outfitted commercial kitchen for big group meals. The property was very clean, well-cared for, and durable finishes made it a perfect place for the kids. The gathering spaces were large and ideal for our group. The hosts did everything possible to make our stay the best - The kids who had never been "west", said it was the "best vacation ever". The ranch has such a rich history, and there is so much to see and do in the Sheridan/Big Horn area, that this was an ideal spot for a base.

The Canyon Ranch in Big Horn

There probably are more beautiful, quiet, and perfect places but I can't even imagine how it would be possible! We had a family reunion and had both the Lodge and the Hay Meadow House. Relatives came from both coasts. Kids everywhere running, playing in the creek, catching fish, getting dirty, and just being able to be kids. No cars, no strangers to worry about, just gorgeous open space to hike, run, and enjoy. This is just a spectacular place!

A fantastic home for our family reunion

We were a large family reunion and rented this house as well as some others right nearby. The house was a wonderful location for this mixed aged group. One of our family members lives nearby and led us to this fantastic property. The house is very nice and easily seated our whole group for dinners (30+) at three long tables though it would have been cozy with a much smaller group too. The weather was gorgeous, so we did spend a huge amount of time on the porch with its dramatic mountain views (though it would nice in the rain, too); the porch had very nice furniture and allowed for private conversations or a big group. A large yard was great for the kids (ages 3-16) to run around and you can leave from the property to a variety of nice walks and hikes. The kitchen was a cook's dream and very well stocked and roomy. We had caterers who cooked breakfast and lunch for our whole group and I was almost disappointed to not be able to spend more time in it! The house is a treasure trove of books, games, cards and great things on the walls to look at. A private bedroom downstairs was good for a set of grandparents and two families of four slept upstairs, one in the bedroom and one in the open loft area. Towels and bedding were plush. There were more than adequate bathrooms/showers, etc. Big Horn is a great area with a great deal to do but you could spend your whole week near leaving this gorgeous house and porch! Our host was also lovely and seemed very accessible though the house felt very private. Don't miss this one!

Location! View! Activities! Attractions! BUT ~

The location of Canyon Ranch Lodge is idyllic. It affords easy access into the Big Horns, it's 20 minutes from Sheridan and 10 minutes from watching world class polo. We were greeted each morning with breathtaking views of the mountains while we sat on the huge, front porch drinking our morning coffee. One cannot tire of the views no matter what time of day it is. Three horses were ever present to watch along with deer, wild turkeys and sand hill cranes. All of that deserves a five star rating. BUT ~ the lower rating is mainly because of the physical condition of the lodge. Temperatures were in the 90s the week we were there. The upstairs had no vents for AC which made sleeping very uncomfortable. Opened windows at night when it was cooler did not offer sufficient relief. The casement windows on both the upper and lower levels are in poor repair and don't work properly. Opening and closing them was a pain in the butt. There was a wind storm the last night we were there with wind gusts up to 60mph (per Weather History for KSHR). The windows could not be closed from inside; one had to go outside to push them shut and someone from inside would then secure them. The wind was dangerous to be in. The king mattress was reported as having a divot and some toilets left us wondering if they would flush or not flush. Lastly, internet was not accessible to our group with three laptops. In spite of Paul's (owner) efforts to help rectify the problem it never happened. Measures need to be taken by the owners to fix the problems in order for this rental to warrant the asking rate.

Canyon Ranch Lodge - The Perfect Idyll

We had the most wonderful week staying at the Lodge as a family with two teenage sons. If you like the big outdoors with the most wonderful views (night and day) and the opportunity for delightful walks and the peace and tranquillity of wild life, in such a beautiful setting as Wyoming Big Horn offers, then this is the place for you. The lodge is very spacious with plenty of room for a family and a great set up with the porch all along the front and fully equipped kitchen and modern communications with wifi and television and so on. Sheridan is close by with places to see and things to do a plenty and also the nearby newly opened Brinton Museum is well worth a visit. Their collection of wild west paintings and the American Indian collection are fabulous. The Big Horn golf and tennis club is also next door so with all these activities on hand there is plenty to do for ages and interests. As well as just sit and read and look at the view. The owners were wonderfully welcoming and helpful and will give you the space to enjoy and share in their very special home. We would most definitely come back again one day all the way from the UK just to experience the special Canyon Ranch magic once again. We would also not hesitate recommending to our friends as the special way to come and see this unique part of the world.

A Hermitage

My husband and I searched high and low for a place to spend special time with two of our adult children. The lodge was perfect. Plenty of room, providing space for group activities as well as comfortable alone time. The view was breathtaking and we found ourselves amazed at how quiet and peaceful the days and nights were. We were close enough to Big Horn and Sheridan to do the town, but found ourselves spending hours on the lodge porch, glassing the distant elk herd, watching deer venture near and counting the multiple varieties of owls at dusk. Canyon Ranch is situated perfectly for all kinds of day trips, whether shopping, touring the nearby mountain roads, battlefields, museums, trail rides, etc. We had a blast taking turns cooking in the huge kitchen. The "kids" went on treasure hunts of a sort to find all the things available to guests - we needed nothing other than the food we brought - all was provided. Watching the light play on the mountains and hills is magic and so relaxing. The TV never came on once during our stay as there was an abundance of beauty to watch all around us; nighttime star gazing (I spotted constellations I haven't been able to see since childhood!), distant lightning storms, cloud/shadow play, young newborn fawns wobbling after their mothers. It was so nice to see our kids receive a good, healthy dose of nature once again and we delighted in seeing their appreciation for it, which wasn't the case when they were younger - they always wanted to get back to the pool or the TV! This time, in this place, they often called us out to share some special sight. Quite a treat. I will hold nothing but fine memories of our stay and am so grateful to our gracious hosts for offering us a chance to experience a little bit of their very own slice of Heaven. I already want to return!

Perfect Location for a Western Retreat With Friends

Our group consisted of 7 adults and 2 children and the lodge exceeded our expectations. The first night as the moon rose between the mountains we were wrapped up in blankets sitting on the huge porch sipping wine. We couldn't think of a more relaxing evening. Morning coffee on the porch offered another stunning view of prairie and mountains to wake up to. We watched the horses, they were curiously watching us as well, and laughed at the baby birds demanding food from their mom. The beds are incredibly comfortable and the huge kitchen made preparing family-style meals a breeze. If you are looking for an authentic Western Ranch retreat look no further. Whether you are taking day trips to Sheridan and shopping, fly-fishing, taking a walk, checking out the Brinton Museum (a must see) or just relaxing and soaking up your beautiful surroundings you will leave rested and rejuvenated!

A setting beyond your wildest dreams

The setting of this lodge is almost hard to believe: overlooking the Big Horn mountains, listening to the sounds of nature, watching the magnificent horses. What more could one ask for? It has a kitchen that is stocked with more than I have at my home and enough room for all of it. Beds were very comfortable. The western decor made the place extra special. Only 20 minutes from Sheridan which was great because it was Rodeo Week. Lots of commotion in town. Close to the Big Horn Smokehouse and Saloon which is a great place to eat.

Fantastic accommodations, breathtaking views!

Canyon Ranch Lodge rocked! The accommodations were great, and the mountain and meadow views were simply astounding. Wildlife galore -- deer, elk, wild turkey, birds, rabbits, etc. -- and the horses on the ranch were friendly and fun to watch as they enjoyed their awesome backyard. The caretaker was wonderful, knowledgeable, and helpful, and knew the local area, which was a nice plus since we were in from Florida. The hiking around the property was great, and the mountains are literally right there, just amazing. The lodge itself was cozy and well equipped, we didn't lack for anything and were very comfortable. I would definitely recommend Canyon Ranch Lodge!!!!

Stunningly beautiful, comfortable and perfectly appointed n

The Lodge has exceeded our expectations! Not only is the home comforting and spacious, it is set in about the most gorgeous place on earth I've ever seen. Come expecting to see magesty at every turn outside and be wrapped in cozy, classic lodge warmth inside. The kitchen has literally EVERY piece of cookware ever invented and room to feed a LOT of people. It's a dream! And speaking of dream ... The bed in the master bedroom is awesome! We highly recommend this property. We would come back in a heartbeat!

Great place for a family to gather!

Our family rented this cabin for a common location to stay over Thanksgiving. Not quite sure what to expect, we were nothing but impressed with all aspects of our stay. Not to mention the beauty of the scenery, the mountains greeting you from the front porch are spectacular. The two private bedrooms are nice to have available but we really enjoyed the common bedroom with six twin beds. I loved the late-night conversations with my family, that wouldn't have been had if everyone would've had a private room. The kitchen was a cook's dream, or anyone's dream for that matter, it made it easy to feed 10 people Thanksgiving dinner or any other meal. Sandra said that there would be everything accessible to us, but I wasn't quite sure what everything was, so I packed a lot of my own things which I did not need at all. Anything you might need of is there. The real wood fireplace was such a treat to gather around in the evening. We also enjoyed daily hikes. We definitely would like to go back again!

Perfect Family Vacation in a Spectacular and Historic Setting

I must confess at the outset that the Big Horns around Sheridan Wyoming are a special place for our family. We vacationed there for many years while our children were growing up at a small dude ranch which is no longer operating. Now that our children are grown and have their own families, we were looking for a spot where we could all vacation together. Canyon Ranch was the perfect place for our family of 6 adults and 4 children. The facilities are first rate with all of the amenities, including a large commercial kitchen. We all especially liked the "mud room" off the kitchen where we could make the transition to or from our outdoor activities of fishing, hiking or mountain bike riding and store our gear. Everything was clean and well maintained. Sandee and Paul were most friendly, gracious and helpful. The listing descriptions of the ranch, surrounding area and available activities are quite accurate. We enjoyed them all (at least all that are available in the summer!). The Sheridan area is unique, combining a rich history of western conflict and settlement with the British influence which comes from the training of horses for the Boer War. Thus, you find top notch Polo played in a spectacular setting right in the middle of cowboy country. But the most wonderful part of Canyon Ranch Lodge is the setting itself. It is a privilege to be able to experience a bit of ranch life in such a truly beautiful place, where the Big Horns come together to form Little Goose Canyon - to sit on the porch to enjoy morning coffee as we watch the kids feed the horses morning treats, to watch the deer, antelope, turkeys, cranes and other wildlife, or simply to enjoy the ever changing, but always spectacular view of the mountains. It is an unforgettable experience which we heartily recommend.

A Slice of Heaven

Our recent stay was everything and more we hoped for. Our host and hostess made our visit delightful. From the history of the property to the wildlife in abundance, everything was first rate. If one wants to enjoy the extraordinary views, fishing, hiking or merely vegging on the porch with a book, this Lodge is a real treat. Close by visits to the National Park; Sheridan, Story or Big Horn just add to the trip. Sheridan is a great spot with ample shops, grocery stores to stock up and an over-all Western flavor. Canyon Ranch Lodge is a 5 Star and one we will be returning to in the future. Thanks Sandy and Paul for sharing with us!

June 2013 Vacation at Canyon Ranch

We gathered a lifetime of wonderful memories during our stay at Canyon Ranch. Our family group consisted of 8 adults (ages 30 - 61) and 3 small children (ages 1 - 5). The lodge facility was perfect for our group, with 3 full bathrooms and a large living area and porch. The kitchen facilities were "professional grade" with a large gas stove and grittle, three large sinks and a full complement of smaller appliances. The lodge was very clean and well-maintained, and it was accurately depicted in the listing description and accompanying photos. The ranch was wonderful for hiking, photography (beautiful scenery) and biking. It's location on the east slope of the Big Horn mountains was very convenient for access into the National Forest and the Cloud Peak Wilderness (where we trout fished, hiked and had several picnics). We also were able to attend a local polo match, at an excellent facility only a few minutes away. The local residents were very friendly and helpful, really nice people. The owners were very accomodating and helpful. They offered helpful suggestions on everything from the best restaurants to what flies the trout fishermen should try (and on which lakes). Our stay exceeded all of our expectations and we would highly recommend this property to families or groups of friends wanting a comfortable, yet very exhilarating outdoor experience.
