About this property

Peaceful Getaway w/ Stunning Views, Deck! Hike, Mtn Bike, min to river! Sleeps 5

Our home is a custom-designed / custom-built, 2 bedroom and 2-1/2 bath house, designed to take advantage of the amazing views atop Burdoin Mtn. which sits at 2000 feet elevation just above the town of White Salmon. We offer excellent access to all types of recreation including windsurfing, kiting, biking, and hiking. Hike or bike from the doorstep with public access to one thousand+ acres of top-rated trails connecting within minutes to three of the Gorge's prime attractions including the renowned Coyote Wall/Syncline, Major Creek, and Catherine Creek, as well as Hospital Hill and the Evergreen Highway. Coyote Wall is considered one of the top ten must-see attractions in the state of Washington. River access is within a 20 minute drive. We oriented our house to take advantage of the views and built the living room as a partial octagon so that it focuses on 12,450 foot Mt. Adams and the surrounding territory. Wildlife abounds, with privacy, solitude, peace and quiet. It's a great retreat for recreation/sports seekers, writers, readers, a small family, a couple wishing a romantic or quiet getaway, or a solo traveller. Private 15 acres of solitude to enjoy. Within a short hiking or biking distance is a most spectacular Gorge view, overlooking a panoramic expanse of more than 70 miles of Columbia River Gorge from 2000 feet of gently sloping bluff---the Columbia River to the West, to the South overlooking the Hood River Valley and town of Hood River plus a stunning image of Mt. Hood, and to the East you gaze up the mighty Columbia towards the high deserts of Eastern Oregon and Washington. We have a lovely deck along the east side of the house overlooking our field--a perfect spot for morning tea, coffee, or even breakfast! Every room in our house offers a unique view of its own, even the bathrooms. Our open-design kitchen has all modern stainless steel amenities, plenty of custom counter tops with a peninsula for seating. Upstairs in the Master area we have a queen bed. There is a sitting area adjacent to this bedroom and a full bathroom with a clawfoot tub and shower, of course with views. The downstairs/daylight basement bedroom also has direct access to an outdoor patio, with a bunk bed double mattress on the lower bunk, twin on the upper, and its own full bath/shower. Our house was designed to provide a cozy and warm atmosphere, with plenty of privacy and modern amenities and to incorporate the beautiful nature and surroundings of our hilltop paradise. Our home is 'green' and healthy, with natural floor coverings, high-efficiency updated appliances. We have nationally ranked top-tasting private community well water. You can be assured that you will return home after your stay feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, well and healthy, and perhaps happily exhausted from recreation!

Wonderful Retreat!
We loved our stay in White Salmon! The house was great, the area was relaxing and not in hustle or bustle but close enough to White Salmon and Hood River for restaurants and recreation. The host is fantastic and friendly and eager to help. We really have a wonderful time.

Relaxation Retreat
My husband and I had the most relaxing stay here! Lisa, your awesome directions and welcome gift had us feeling taken care of right from the start! The house has everything one would need for a comfortable stay, and the peaceful surroundings really enhance the experience. We were a little disappointed to find that the viewpoint described in the listing is no longer accessible, but we enjoyed several lovely walks around the property and surrounding area. If you are looking for a place to rest and relax while connecting with nature, this is the place for you!

Perfect social distance getaway for the kids!
We were looking for a place to unwind with the kids and this house delivered! The kids enjoyed the wild life (deers, wild turkeys, and countless birds), running around the house, and exploring the tall grass & trails on the property. The views from inside and around the house were spectacular - and the Gorge View at the end of the 2-min walk was simply gorge-ous! Lisa and Dave were great hosts - responsive and accommodative - and made us feel right at home!

Peace and Family Friendly Experience
A perfect place to get away from all the chaos of a busy life. The house brought our family comfort and a quiet environment to play board games, read and bbq with an incredible view all around. From our walks every morning and night around the property to our times to sit and enjoy the full moon and stars, it felt like we were staying in a tree house. So close to all the fun. We white water rafted at Zoorafters (AWESOME), hiked to 5 different waterfalls, enjoyed a soak in the hot springs at Carsons Mineral bath house and did the ropes course at Skamania Lodge. We stayed during the hottest week in July and the house does not have air conditioning. It was very warm, but it helped to leave the windows open and we brought extra fans. All in all, a comfortable stay.

Unique Night Sky, Custom Home, Gracious Landlords, Access to Scenic Trails and Mountain Views
Imagine flipping over on your belly and to look out the window right at the head of your bed and seeing a beautiful sky full of stars. Going to bed in this beautiful home is as wonderful as the daytime views of Mount Adams, fields, hills and trees. The house is designed and decorated in a very personal style that we found it both pleasing and practical. We were there for 10 days and cooked many meals in the well equipped kitchen. We enjoyed afternoons and evenings in the spacious living room and on the deck (both with a full view of Mt. Adams). There are many local options for scenic running and hiking trails, including the very close access to stunning views of the Columbia Gorge and Mt. Hood. Other activities within driving distance include white water rafting, the beautiful Maryhill museum, the Stonehenge replica, and many excellent wineries. We especially enjoy Cascade Cliffs in Wishram, Memaloose and Tetrahedron in Lyle. Lisa and David are the most gracious and helpful hosts that you can imagine. We felt as if we were their honored guests. You will find this house to be perfectly equipped and the hosts to be there to answer any questions. If you are considering staying in the White Salmon area, our family wholeheartedly recommends this home.

Beyond expectation
My 9 year old daughter and I had a great experience at this special location. The home was replete with all essentials, and it felt very homey and welcoming. It's an extremely quiet and private space, with easy access to White Salmon, fruit orchards, rafting, hood river etc. the views from almost every room are magnificent. Be sure to bring warm clothes for the very cool mountain evenings. And enjoy the Lammas, humming birds and deer.

Great views of Mount Adams
This is a very spacious home with nice furnishings and panoramic views from everywhere. Also a spacious yard and a nearby trail that provides an excellent vista view of the gorge. It suited our needs well as a home base for a predetermined itinerary.

Just what we needed!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in White Salmon, and the house was the perfect place for us. The house has a lot of personality. Lisa, you have a great way of decorating that makes every room feel like home. All the personal touches (and yes, we loved the chocolate and coffee you put there just for us!) made it hard to leave. We enjoyed the ride to and from the house as much as we did our destinations. The directions are specific and to the point. I am the world's worst navigator, so this was really appreciated! We loved the mountain view from the living room! The kitchen was very user friendly, so making meals there was easy and convenient. We loved our day trips! There is so much to see! Hood River had lots of restaurants, windsurfing, kite-boarding, wine tasting - lots of fun! The stars at night were incredible! It was a great time had by all! Thank you!

Quiet retreat near Hood River
We immediately felt at home upon entering the cabin-he decor is very tasteful and comforting. Lisa was very thoughtful leaving coffee and chocolate upon our arrival. She also returned to the rental to make up the kids beds, after there was some confusion with VRBO that there were only two adults and no kids. It had all the amenities needed for our stay and our kids enjoyed playing with toys the the "green machine" that was left for them. The kids got to see what a night sky really looks like away from city lights and were amazed by all the stars. The house is not close to any stores, but we did not mind. We ate breakfast, prepared lunches and then went off every day to do a different activity: Windsurf lessons for the boys with Big Winds at the Hood River, paddle boarding on the Columbia river, hiking up to the waterfalls at the historic highway 30, hiking near mount hood, lost lake and Gifford Pinchot national park. We would drive 30-60 min to get to these activities and then end our day with a nice dinner in Hood River or White Salmon. The grocery store in White Salmon has everything you would need. There is no WiFi, but I view this as a positive as I am always looking at ways to get my kids off of electronics. They didn't even miss their ipads with so much to do! This is a great fit if you have an active family and want your kids to truly experience the beautiful outdoors.

Great house, away from it all!
We just loved staying at this house! It was perfect for us plus two kids. The outdoor space suited us, the view was lovely, the kitchen was well equipped, and everything was clean and ready on arrival. It's very peaceful, and a 15 drive into town so no nipping out for a quick coffee. There's a short walk from the house that takes you to really spectacular view out over the Gorge. And plenty of other hikes and bike rides to do from the house too. All in all, we loved it!

Beautiful home and great cares was taken to welcome us.
We were very impressed with the home and the details that made it comfortable and a pleasure to enjoy. Sitting on the deck at night was relaxing and reminds you of how massive our world is. The stars were a beauty to behold and the satellites moving through the sky reminded us of the abilities man has. We truly enjoyed our time and hope to go back next year and the year after that!

About the host

Hosted by Lisa Neuburger

Host profile image
Dave and Lisa met in the Gorge in the early 90's, sharing many of the same interests. We built our home together in 1995 and now have a small family which includes Nicolaas, age 9, and Jin Bo, age 5, plus our dog, Cosmo, 5 chickens and a stray or rescued animal here and there. We both have extensive sports backgrounds which brought us each separately to the Gorge in the 1980's. Lisa no longer competes, Dave no longer climbs into the highest altitudes, but we love introducing our children to the opportunities we had and which abound in the Gorge area, including windsurfing, skiing, rock climbing, sailing, hiking, kayaking and mountain biking. Our children indulge in viewing, identifying, and tracking the wildlife around our home or down by the River. They love to explore, looking for trails, scat, nests, etc. and they really enjoy the summer treat of sleeping outside and counting the shooting stars! We feel so very fortunate to have our beautiful home in the Gorge and look forward to sharing it with guests like you!

Why they chose this property

Lisa discovered this property in 1990 and immediately fell in love with it, with its sweeping gentle fields and spectacular view to Mt. Adams. Lisa had been traveling to the Gorge since 1985 for professional windsurfing races, and although from the Virgin Islands, she felt more and more at home in this beautiful area and began looking for property in 1989. In 1994 she designed her dream home and had it built by DC-3 Construction, completed in 1995 and updated along the way. The house was built to incorporate as much of the surrounding nature and beauty of the area and Dave did the hand-hewn beamwork himself. Unlike many custom home building projects which leave the homeowner feeling slighted or unhappy, this one left Lisa feeling as if the house enveloped the best and brightest energy and beauty within its walls. We have loved and maintained the house and have updated it accordingly. Our two growing children love this home and the property and spend much of their time here outside playing and exploring, as children are meant to do! We love it here and hope that you will also!

What makes this property unique

The views from the knoll upon which our 'House on the Hill' is built are ever-changing and spectacular. Mt. Adams sits loftily large to the North, which was what first caught my eye when I found this property. Just as magnificent as Mt. Adams is, the surrounding meadows and trees (our acreage was once a treeless meadow) are equally lovely. The flora and solitude attract an abundance of wildlife which we so enjoy watching from the deck, from the living room, or from the upstairs bed in the early mornings or late evenings. Every window brings a view, even windows at the stairs landings. The peace and quiet almost causes a buzz or ringing in your ears. The easy access to recreation is what brought us here in the first place. Probably one of the greatest special bonus 'views' which some guests have been honored with, is watching a mother deer give birth in the high grasses of the swale just below our house. That is our secret maternity ward, and it is incredibly special. We love the wildlife around us and make every effort to not disturb or disrupt the comings and goings of our beautiful native critters. If I were not the homeowner and constantly finding projects around the house, my favorite activity here would be, and one day WILL be, just to sit for hours with a book, perhaps on the bench inside our circle of trees down below the house. Sometimes I sit there and just listen to the birds and the wind, and look out over the meadow and savor having something so beautiful right here in our own backyard, literally. Also, in the last 22 years, the Syncline, Catherine and Major Creeks trails have gone from being our little secrets for running and mountain biking from our neighborhood, to being officially 'developed' as trails by the Forest Service and put on area recreation maps. So our secret trails are now highly-sought out attractions, like the Coyote Wall, and they are all so easily accessed on foot or by bike right from our front door.
