On very quiet, private, dead-end road - totally private (but with cell reception, land line, wireless & cable) landscaped home, surrounded by woods and large frontage on a lovely small (no motorboats allowed) swimming (spring fed) lake. From your large deck you see water, trees, mountains, wildlife and sky. Cathedral ceiling LR; Master bedroom with king bed and double glass doors to deck with pristine mountain/lake views; living room with woodstove, sun room and dining room/kitchen; large deck & screen porch for outdoor dining. 2nd BR with queen bed and antique furnishings; 3rd BR [the Shakespeare room] with trundle (two singles) and more antiques. 3 full baths (one with separate tub/shower; one with combined tub/shower, and one downstairs with luxury seated shower). Somewhat temperamental Bose music system & tons of CDs from classical to jazz to pop to country to folk. Downstairs in family room you'll find a 72 inch flat screen T.V. Cable/desktop computer/printer. Streaming channels include Netflix (via Roku), Britbox, MHz, and more. Watch while working out on the elliptical machine or using the Pilates reformer (only if you are experienced, please) or free weights. The whole house is wireless. Lots of games, puzzles, DVDs and videotapes (yup, our machine handles both. Garage for 2 cars (although ask, because one slot might be taken) and circular driveway with plenty of parking room. Perfect swimming, spring fed and clean, shared only with beaver, heron, ducks, turtles and a very few residents. Glorious relatively level biking in the area (we're on a plateau) in many directions. Canoe/paddles/life jackets for your use; charcoal and gas grills; large deck (see photos!) 20 minutes to ski Hunter; a bit further to Windham, free cross-X 15 min. up the mountain in North/South Lake State Park. Great antique-hunting nearby and across the river; local auctions in many directions. Near HITS horse show (15 min.) Lovely hikes and nearby gorgeous waterfalls; great hiking trails with incredible views; snow-tubing at Hunter in winter and zip line in summer; river tubing 35 min. away. Woodstock 20-25 min. away. Great restaurants in Palenville, Saugerties, Woodstock, Tannersville, Hunter and Catskill. Concerts and live music everywhere from Bard across the river, to Woodstock to Tannersville; off-beat films, local theater abound.
Sightseeing: Olana and the Thomas Cole house of Hudson School painting fame are nearby, as is Opus 41, an amazing sculpted quarry. http://www.opus40.org/; in summer there are several open studio art shows and multiple gallery open houses. Bard's famous Gehry Fisher Center is across the river South of Olana.
Fully equipped gourmet kitchen with teas, coffee, cereal spices, oils (flavored and not), vinegar and staples for your use; an 'honor bar' (a few dollars on your honor in the basket for drinks, so you don't have to drag alcohol along for a short trip); luxury appointments; wood stove (with optional screen for fireplace feel). Luxury shower features jets at your back as you sit on tile bench; plenty of soaps, oils, and bubble bath for your enjoyment. And a few terry robes washed and available for your use, along with sheets, towels, beach towels, spare toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.
Individual A/C in each BR and giant unit fully cools LR/DR/Kitchen area; oil (and wood stove) heat; heated garage; washer/drier.

Well-kept and well insulated on 5.44 clear and wooded acres with 2 stone patios overlooking the lake. Stunning views of lake, mountains, trees and wildlife. Swimming from stone jetty in summer; snowshoes available for winter walking; bring your cross-X skis (one size 6 pr. available). Hiking walking poles to borrow, and lots of hikes, and hiking and nature books. There's also a spotting telescope for closer looks at nature.
CAUTIONS: House NOT allergy-free; YOU WILL LIKELY BE CAT-SITTING MY SWEET AND GENTLE CAT, AND WATERING INDOOR AND DECK PLANTS. Lake is not safe for ice skating in winter (spring fed from underneath). House is not baby or young-child proof (there's a stairway to the family room without a gate; deck rails are close together but the stairs to the garden have no gate; there are outlets everywhere and the wood stove is not fenced off.) It's fine if you are able to watch them (or for non-mobile babies), but you'll need to pay attention. And all younger kids need supervision if swimming or canoeing.

Comfortable, Art-filled House

Comfortable house filled with art made for a relaxing family visit. Kitchen is well-equipped, which was great for preparing holiday meals. We appreciated thoughtful touches like the honor bar and a wide choice of teas, cocoa, and coffee. The wood stove kept the house warm during a very cold spell. Palenville was a convenient base for going to different Catskill towns and attractions.

Beautiful lakeside property

My group of two couples thoroughly enjoyed our two-week stay in this well-equipped home. The property was more remote than we had expected, but the sights and sounds of flora and fauna were peaceful and provided a much-needed respite from urban life. Our host was prompt and thorough in communicating, and provided a beautifully equipped kitchen, comfortable bedding, and plenty of space for alone or together time. We had a wonderful experience!

Wonderful

Our getaway at this property was nothing short of wonderful. The house is just beautiful, and spotless. Carlin made the entire process easy, was welcoming, very informative about the house, and area. My children fished, and played to their hearts content. This was the absolute perfect, peaceful getaway for my family.

Best vacation for us of all booked!

We booked Carlin's home for a vacation/birthday celebration and our week's stay FAR exceeded our expectations. First, everything that you could possibly want or need is in the home. Every spice known to mankind (I would imagine that Carlin is a great cook), paper goods, kitchenware of every shape, size and form...even food products! We were seriously flabbergasted by the immense selection of everything! The house is spotless, the beds are the most comfortable that we have had in any house (now my husband wants to get a new mattress). My son went out in the canoe every day for over 2 hours and fished. We all went swimming in the lake. The deck with BBQ is huge but we spent alot of time in the screened in porch. The house is secluded so that you feel that you are in your own private oasis yet you are a quick drive to most restaurants, markets, etc. We HIGHLY recommend this property!

Bucolic spot in the Catskills!

We just had a wonderful weekend at this beautiful home in Palenville. The spot can’t be beat. The house overlooks an adorable, clean, spring fed pond. Ours kids and dog swam in the pond and had a blast. The host was super nice and paid attention to every detail. We would highly recommend this rental.

Lovely Private Lake House!

Our family has used VRBO for years - and you just never know; as such, we have learned to check the reviews first. So, if you are considering this home - it is a 100% YES! It is in the Catskills, off the beaten path...with lake and mountain views. Great flow in the home - with everything you will need; and it was VERY clean! Our hostess - the home's owner - was kind, gracious and prompt - extremely easy to work with. Thanks! The highlight for me was the lake. Essentially, our own private oasis. We got great weather and spent every day in the water. It's really nice - and I even caught (and released) a couple of fish. If you want to getaway and relax - with plenty to do nearby (Woodstock, Hunter, good grocery stores and restaurants, etc.) do not hesitate. We loved it!

Beautiful house with everything you need for a relaxing stay.

My husband and I enjoyed a mini-getaway for the New Year's Eve weekend at this beautiful house. It is very comfortable, immaculately clean and well stocked with everything we needed for cooking our own meals (which we did most of the time -- though we had a fantastic lunch at Gracie's Luncheonette in Leeds one day). It was extremely cold during our stay, but the house is well-insulated and we kept a fire going in the wood stove with the ample supplied firewood. Carlin was a very helpful host who responded to emails immediately and provided lots of useful tips. We will love to come back in the summer when we can be outdoors more and go swimming in the pond.

Wonderful stay in a beautiful home!!!!

We don't usually splurge on our weekend getaways but we did for my 34th birthday and it was totally worth it!!!!!! The house is beautiful!!!!! Just wonderful! The pictures say it all, except its better in person! The house is clean and decorated beautifully! With plenty of room and natural lighting! The pond is clean and peaceful! Neighbors were nice and far enough for privacy. It's 30 minutes distance to all local towns such as Woodstock and Rhineback. We definitely want to return maybe in the summer to enjoy the pond more! Thank you Ms. Carlin for sharing your home with us and trusting us!

Wonderful

We had a fantastic stay at this beautiful home. The house is fully stocked with everything you might need - even oil-dipped kindling for easy lighting of the wood stove. Peaceful location yet within easy driving distance of all the local sites Hunter, Windham, Woodstock etc... Carlin is responsive and easy to work with. Hope to stay again.

Elegant, tranquil retreat

This is a beautiful house in a lovely, secluded location. The loudest sounds were the toads at night. The house was both extremely comfortable and attractively furnished, with a full range of amenities. Carlin, the owner, had provided for needs we hadn't even anticipated. The swimming was just delightful. The surrounding areas provided opportunities for many activities, or you could simply read, relax and look at the scenery. We thoroughly enjoyed the summer week we spent there.

Dream House

This house is breathtaking. So beautiful by the spectacular lake, and so comfortable, full of those little details that together create luxury. Once we arrived, we didn't want to leave. We enjoyed it so much! Although we've never met the owner and communicated by email, we felt the warm and caring hospitality everywhere. We had a wonderful time. Thank you Carlin!

Great house beautiful setting

We spent a gorgeous fall weekend in this very well appointed house. It is by far the best quipped house we have ever rented. From the stocked refrigerator to plentiful supply of dry wood everything needed was on hand. The house is full of interesting art pieces, great books and a nice selection of CDs. This is a great place for a group of friends to spend time enjoying the deck and the view or sitting in front of a roaring fire. Great hiking, shopping and restaurants are an easy drive away. This place is a great find.

Wonderful Week

Comfortable, inviting, well appointed -- this gem of a home was the perfect retreat in high summer. It's an ideal base for excursions in the glorious countryside, though it's equally tempting to just sit by the pond with a book and take a dip every so often. We'll be back for sure!

Would definitely go back!

We spent a long weekend at this beautiful home and it was perfect. My girlfriends and I go away every year and this was by far the best place we have stayed. The house itself is great for small groups like ours (5 of us), very comfortable with plenty of room. We had coffee on the screened in porch each morning and cocktails on the deck in the afternoon. The house has every thing you could possibly need and Carlin even provided fresh half and half for our coffee, saying " when you are here for such a short time I don't think you should have to spend your time grocery shopping." Carlin sent me information about the area prior to our visit and there is additional information available at the house which we used. There are books to read, board games to play, music to listen to, and movies to watch. We would have all liked to have stayed longer. I would recommend this rental to anyone and would love to go back for a longer stay. While we usually try a different location every year, we are seriously considering coming back next year because we enjoyed ourselves so much. Thanks for making your home available to us!

Extra Special Catskill Lake Home

We spent 8 wonderful days at this private, secluded home on a small lake. We drank our morning coffee watching beaver build a damn and some mornings watching rain walk across the lake. Carlin (homeowner) was attentive to our needs before and during our stay. Her home is the perfect setting for relaxing, BBQing and creating long lasting memories. We wanted for nothing - everything that is needed for the perfect vacation can be found at the fabulous home. The kitchen is fully equipped something I always look for in a VRBO rental. The home is in a great walking neighborhood. Close by attractions are perfect for day trips. Woodstock, Hyde Park, Hudson just to name a few. We chose this home for a Family Wedding as a destination we could all congregate at in-between wedding festivities. It was worked out beautifully! Booking Carlin's home is your first step in creating A Great Vacation!

Wonderful Home!

A few friends and I stayed at this home earlier this month. It was really fantastic. The lake is beautiful, the house was very well kept, and we couldn't have had a nicer time. This was my first time using VRBO, but a friend on the trip has stayed in many homes using this site and said this one was the best he'd ever stayed at. The manager and home owner answered all of our questions. We would return in an instant.

Wonderful House

This house was really amazing, no close neighbors but near enough to Woodstock for restaurants and shops. We had 5 people in our group and stayed on the property for most of the trip, we snowshoed around the lake and cooked in the well-stocked kitchen. Everything was set up like a bed and breakfast for us, there were games, books, clean towels and robes, movies, CDs, wine, tea, etc. for our use. It's a very homey, clean place. Would highly recommend!

Everything you could want

I've had the good fortune to stay here a number of times, winter and summer, most recently, last June. The house and the area have anything you could want for a vacation -- activity, peace, comfort, and beauty. I have been swimming in the lake, hiking on nearby trails, eating in wonderful nearby restaurants, group cooking in the spacious kitchen, reading on the sun porch and watchig movies.Everything is extremely comfortale and well planned. Everywhere you look (inside and out) is beauty.

Paradise!!!!

This place was my idea of heaven. My girlfriend and I spent a week there in August and I wish I could have stayed for the rest of the summer. Just waking up and looking at the lake -- and then jumping in and taking a swim -- hearing the birds, watching the sunset from the deck, and the stars at night. The house itself is extremely comfortable, with lots of places for lounging. I rotated between the chaise lounge in the sun room, and the couch in the living room, and of course outside on the deck in one of the comfy deck chairs, just looking at the lake and the sky.... Plus there is plenty to do in the area -- although we chose not to partake of much of it, except the nearby farmstand. Actually, we did go hiking twice, and there were plenty more hikes that we wanted to do, but there wasn't the time. Plus some great places for bike riding I definitely recommend this place for anyone who appreciates beauty, solitude, outdoor activities (be it swimming, biking, hiking), and who also enjoys amenities (vcr, dvd, cd player, internet access, well equipped kitchen, herb garden) . I have no doubt it would be beautiful in the winter as well, especially when it snows (should be some great cross country skiing, plus not far from a downhill ski resort). All in all, a perfect place for a getaway, and with plenty of room too so that I could imagine going up next time with another couple. Enough room for all of us to have our own space and still be together.

Being close to Woodstock as a grownup

This house is perfectly situated--quiet, rural in feel--yet close enough to Woodstock and all of the amenities--food, restaurants, shops, and crafts--when we wanted more than just a relaxing time with beautiful vistas out the windows. At night, it was easy to get back and forth, too, so we could go out for dinner. The house is spacious, clean, and has everything you could possibly need for a vacation. Great kitchen, too.

About the host

Hosted by Carlin Meyer

Host profile image
I'm a NYC teacher. This is my second home, and not simply a rental property, so I don't rent it often and CAT CARE IS PART OF THE BARGAIN. SWEET PEA IS EASY (AND HIDES A LOT) BUT THIS IS NOT THE HOUSE FOR YOU IF YOU ARE CAT-ALLERGIC OR DON'T WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR HER FEEDING/LITTER SCOOPING. I love wildlife, hiking, swimming the length of the pond/lake and back among the turtles (spring-fed, clean, cool and totally lovely), canoeing, cross-X skiing, biking, and music/theater/shopping - the house is perfect for all of these. I share my two bikes (please, only with experienced bikers and you MUST wear the helmets provided) and have an electric air pump for the tires. The house is in a very quiet neighborhood, totally private, on a private road; ATVs and motorboats not permitted. It's an ideal launch-pad for hiking, skiing, sight-seeing, concert and theater-going, and heading out for a gourmet meal, but I prefer staying to watch the sun go down over the lake, with a glass of wine in hand and something delicious on the stove. Streaming Netflix is available for after the sun goes down, and I have a great collection of CDs ranging from classical and folk to African and Cuban to (mostly feminist) country music. For youth and the young at heart there are puzzles and games galore, and literally hundreds of books (I'm willing to loan them if you haven't finished reading them, but please leave a note and send them back eventually or at least ask me via email if I want them back.)

Why they chose this property

I bought this place after renting in the area for years. I wanted a place with lots of light, nearby swimming, views, privacy, quiet, nice and caring neighbors, and that didn't require a lot of care. I bought it from the builder, and have loved every minute of owning it. It boasts a 100 year old stone wall; goslings and baby ducks every May; beautiful blue heron, occasional foxes, beaver, muskrat, bear, and loads of birds. Please don't inquire if you are a large group or looking for a party space.

What makes this property unique

The spring-fed lake is fabulous for swimming; the setting gorgeous and quiet and the stars amazing; proximity to great hiking and HITS horseshow and Hunter and Windham skiing and great restaurants. I share my hiking poles, snowshoes, and canoe. The kitchen is stocked with flavored oils, teas, cocoa, spices and other basics so you don't have to leave to shop. I even provide an 'honor bar' (you leave what you think is fair) -- so you needn't bring alcohol or mixers. Beds are firm; woodstove has fire screen, lots of art, books, games and music. There's a special luxury shower off the family room. The screen porch and deck are lovely and the mosquitoes most years are relatively few. Spring and summer flowers abound; winter the snow floats down and makes for great snowshoeing or cross-X skiing on the property and road (tho the cross-X skiing is better up the mountain at the free state park at North-South Lake.) Catskill (under 15 minutes away) has a great Pilates and yoga studios; all of the towns have great art and art classes in summer if not year round.
