Very well appointed house with amazing gardens
Very well equipped home. Comfortable and with everything you might need for a holiday and more beside. The three gardens and summerhouse are a real attraction - our grandchildren visited for a day and really enjoyed them. The owner was helpful - the only glitch being that communication using the VRBO system didn't seem to function properly so we communicated with the owner directly by email

Short stay in Northumberland
Lovely property in a very pretty location. Well stocked with everything you could need for a break. Lots of books and maps to plan outings. Friendly and helpful next door neighbours. Well placed for trips to the Roman wall and Kielder water. Weather was mostly kind. Scenery was spectacular. Love this area.

Family visit
Ideal location for visiting my family. I had a great stay, easy walking along the riverside. I found the double mattress very hard and uncomfortable for me personally. Lovely gardens, enjoyed the sunshine lounging on the decking. Very peaceful.

Wonderful cottage in great location
A real home from home in this lovely cosy cottage. We loved the range of games, books and music and our boys particularly liked having access to the football pitch immediately behind the house and the huge gardens for running around. The kitchen is really well equipped. Allendale itself is a handsome village with a brilliant independent supermarket and the cottage is only a couple of minutes walk from a curry house - happy days! Superb communication from our hosts with lots of ideas for activities, walks and days out. Thank you David and Ruth for a wonderful holiday!

Allendale Challenge
We stayed here while competing in the Allendale Challenge. We thought the cottage was great. Just the right size for 4 adults. Lovely cosy and warm. The log burner was very welcoming seen as it had snowed. In addition to the bathroom, there’s a downstairs loo and wet room which served us very well. Everything you could need to make your stay very pleasant. A short walk via the road or through the woods to the town where there are two pubs. We preferred the Golden Lion (fantastic chips!). There’s a cafe and a coop for supplies! There’s also a curry house closer to home to eat in or take away. Beautiful views up on the hills. Great stay and would recommend. A summer trip would be nice to enjoy their beautiful garden and summer house. Thank you David and Ruth.

A truly wonderful place to stay
This is one of the loveliest cottages we have stayed in and had everything we could possibly want for a fantastic holiday. The cottage itself is spacious, with a comfortable lounge just perfect for relaxing in. The kitchen is well equipped and a pleasure to cook in, while the bedrooms are spacious and pleasant. That's just the beginning, though. Directly behind the cottage is the local sports field, with a football pitch and tennis courts. Staying at the cottage we had access to all of this, which kept our sons very happy indeed. Then, a short hop over the (very quiet) road and you are in a lovely garden, complete with summerhouse, space to dine outside and a lawn area to play badminton and croquet. Allendale is a pleasant town with shops, a cafe and a small art gallery showing work by local artists working there. A short drive away is Hadrian's Wall, with numerous sites to visit and there are walks galore both from the cottage and further afield. The hosts, David and Ruth, were very helpful indeed and offered plenty of suggestions for days out and things to see in the local area. We spent a wonderfully relaxing week at the cottage and our one regret is that we only booked for one week! Needless to say we can't wait to return to this wonderful spot.

Cozy well equipped cottage
Small cottage but big enough for 4 adults (second bedroom is a twin) and is very cozy. Beds comfortable. Lovely wood burner and well equipped kitchen. More freezer space would have been useful but understand the challenge of space. Stairs to first floor are on the steep side which may pose a problem for some. Parking is easy. It is in walking distance of Allendale and there are a number of nice walks from the cottage. Lovely part of Northumberland. Welcome from the owner and the people who look after the cottage was great and there were a number of thoughtful touches. Instructions were detailed and clear.

Lovely cottage in stunning country location, felt like home from home
From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel very welcome. The cottage was perfect for our family of four, and we felt at home straight away. The cottage had everything we needed and all the facilities were excellent. Particularly enjoyed the walk in shower. We also made use of the large beautiful garden and summer house during the evenings and had several BBQs while relaxing with a glass or two of wine. The views from the property are stunning, and the whole area is amazing. Overall we had a wonderful two week holiday at your cottage, and enjoyed every minute.

An ideal English Holiday
The cottage is ideal for up to four people, well-equipped, with two separate gardens and a summer house. It's set amidst the beautiful hills of Northumberland, with plenty of interesting places nearby, including Hadrian's Wall and the historic town and abbey of Hexham. Allendale, the small town nearby, is less than a mile's walk along the river from the cottage and has a general store, a Post Office and an active church. Even nearer, just over the river bridge, is an excellent Indian restaurant. For a southerner, it was lovely to be reminded of how friendly people are in the north of England.

Lovely, well equipped cottage.
Allenmill Cottage is well equipped and very comfortable. It was lovely and warm and has a super wood-burning stove. It had everything we needed. Went to the local church. Also, did a long walk along the valley and over the fells as the cold weather had frozen the mud and made it easier to walk.

Cosy cottage in beautiful Northumberland
We (family, two children) very much enjoyed our stay. The cottage has got everything you need, the atmosphere is very pleasant. A beautiful garden is lying just across the street. And Allendale (you can take a walk to the village) is close to Hexham, Hadrian's Wall and other interesting places.

Lovely comfortable stay.
This is a charming, cosy, comfortable, exceptionally well provisioned property, just as described in the listing. I booked it as a base whilst volunteering at the Vindolanda Roman excavation. The owner and the local agent were helpful and friendly, so the booking and arrival worked smoothly. The garden and outside space opposite the cottage are lovely, well-maintained areas. The summerhouse is a lovely space, which was also used as a music room! The Allendale area itself is delightful - the town is that rare thing, a self-contained rural village, with essential shops, a good selection of pubs and restaurants and local activities. The view as you return to the town from Hexham is truly breathtaking: one of my guests walked it AND drove it twice at a dawdle one evening just to enjoy it over again. There are plenty of walking opportunities and Hexham, Corbridge, Hadrian's wall and Vindolanda are not far away. I would thoroughly recommend this property.

About the host

Host profile image
Ruth and David now work in International Education. Previously we worked in Tyneside. We bought this cottage to share and have enjoyed steadily been improving it over the past 26 years.

Why they chose this property

Allenmill cottages and Allendale are part of a vibrant, friendly, open community that we are proud to be part of. We enjoy sharing our home with other people who appreciate the community and countryside of Allendale. You'll receive a warm welcome from neighbours and all the folk in the region. In fact, the Sunday Times voted Allendale in the top 3 places to live in the North East.

What makes this property unique

The chance of being able to go for a good walk from the front door makes this a home I want to keep coming back to. Sitting in the Summerhouse overlooking the pond, reading, bird watching, sun or rain watching can be tranquil and uplifting. Playing croquet in the field is great fun.

The cottage is near to the village for supplies and with Hexham 15 minutes away, you have ample shopping.

Lots of history abounds from Romans to lead mining days.
