Peaceful
This is my 4th time staying here. While I don't take advantage of all this place has to offer; I love everything about it. I like being away from the touristy part of the island. I like waking up to the sound of chickens. It is private when you want it but you can find conversation with Richard if you want it.

Delightfully quiet
This little studio ohana is perfect for the couple who wishes to enjoy the quiet and beautiful setting. Within easy walking distance of Hawi, yet in this middle of an organic farm. The dog, cats and chickens all came to visit at one time or another. Great location for all those north end activities you want to do.

Peaceful, beautiful farm
My girls and I will never forget our stay on this beautiful farm. The fruits and vegetables were amazing. Lyla’s hospitality was top notch. If we needed anything we had it. I was privileged to receive an amazing massage on the porch of the master house looking out onto the sea and Maui. Hawi is a artsy, quante, delicious town. We will return.

Relaxing and Fun for Animal Lovers
Our two young children (ages 4 and 5) and us loved our several days in Hawi. The cottage is well set up and was clean. As parents, we enjoyed relaxing on the patio while our kids played on huge grass lawn next to the cottage. We enjoyed the owner's dog visiting us as well as one of the cats. We loved feeding the chickens our food scraps. The hosts are beautiful people who were very accommodating and friendly. Hawi is one of the most beautiful parts of Hawaii and this landscaped organic farm did not disappoint.

Sweet guest house on a cool Hawi farm!
We had a lovely stay in this really sweet guest house. We found it easy enough thanks to the purple banner marking the driveway entrance. Richard was there to great us and show us where we were staying. He was friendly and engaging. He has lots of knowledge about lots of things! We had everything we needed for our four day stay -- kitchen, shower, laundry, comfortable bed. The dog and the chickens were an added charm. Absolutely loved having my morning coffee outside on the patio over looking so many tropical trees and plants! We recommend this property without hesitation. Hope we get to go back someday. Mahalo!

Clean, quiet, peaceful and relaxing.
My husband and I stayed with our six-year-old. I loved being close to the eclectic little town of Hawi but not having any noise from traffic. It was peaceful sleeping with a breeze through the screens and quiet chirping night sounds outside.

Relaxing and private studio
Stayed here for 3 nights in mid May. The sanctuary the studio is on is beautiful and peaceful, there are a number of animals to check out and a friendly dog. After leaving the airport at around 9:30 PM it was a bit tricky to find the studio in the dark, there could have been more of a description on how to find it (or maybe there was but it was lost in a sea of emails). It was often windy and rained out of the blue quite often, but that didn't negatively impact the visit. The studio has all the amenities you might need and I found the bed to be comfortable. The rustling trees in the wind was very relaxing to relax and sleep to. It is possible to walk to town but your shoes might get a little muddy on the way. Overall it was a great experience here, and the town of Hawi was nice as well. Thanks!

Perfect!
We LOVED our stay in Hawi! So peaceful and beautiful, it was a lovely home to come home to every day and a wonderful place to explore when we were home. Natalie and Richard were great hosts, the cottage was perfect, the lanai wonderful to relax on, and Kahu and the chickens were great company!

Garden really is a lovely sanctuary
We had a wonderful stay in Richard and Natalie's beautiful cottage. They have truly created a garden sanctuary... the grounds feel lovingly cared for, and we felt nurtured in every way by our time there, from the very comfy bed to fresh garden bok choy. We look forward to returning soon!

Photos were not as they appear
It was a nice blend of nature in a quaint location, however our booking was unregistered and the room was not ready on our late arrival. Jonathan, Richard and his wife were very accommodating. There were few rodents that kept us up at night. Kavu the dog brightened our spirits.

Peace and Happiness in the lap of Mother Earth
We got a chance to view and learn about the workings of a small organic farm and the dedicated youth that end and nurture the many varieties of plants. We were greeted by Kahu the fetch maniac every day and night and vistied by friendly chickens looking for scraps. Easy to relax and unwind.

Inspiring intro to the Big Island
Hi Richard and Natalie, We returned home on February 23 after two more weeks on the island after leaving your place. Your farm/sanctuary was a most welcoming landing for the first part of our full-circle tour of the Big Island. The cottage was really comfortable. We loved making good meals and relaxing on the lanai and enjoying all the fruit. The cottage is well-equipped and we took full advantage to prepare fine meals from local fish and your veggies. The quiet beauty of your farm gave us things to explore that were as good as other places on the island. We were inspired as we explored your property, seeing all the good care you have given this land that you have nurtured so well, and that is producing so many food and medicinal plants. It added to the wonderful atmosphere for enjoyment. Your hospitality for the barbecue was delicious and gave us additional opportunity to meet your other guests and workers. It was such a treat to be invited to enter the real world of your work and enthusiasm for nutritional health, wellness and good care of land. We felt very much at home--similar to our small urban farm in Cincinnati--off the beaten path and having a magical charm that is rejuvenating. Keep up your good work! We hope to see you again sometime. Ed and Eileen

Our Last stop over before going back to the mainland...
And this was the best !!! I grew up on a farm and was so comfortable with having the chickens, dogs, sheep and cows near, it made it that much more special that we got to interact with the animals, the property was beautiful and the beds were very comfortable . I would love to return and stay longer, also it was very close to the most magnificent beaches for snorkeling and relaxing... The owner was very gracious and all the hands were extremely friendly and informative. The little town was in walking distance and was full of wonderful things to see and taste !!! I long to return ✌🏼👍🏼

Staying here was one of the best surprises of our trip!!
The Lokahi Garden Sanctuary is an amazing organic farm and a great place to stay in Kohala. Our family was comfortable in the studio apartment. It was clean and spacious. Richard and Natalie are wonderful hosts and we felt very welcome. Richard gave us a great tour of the farm and we learned lots about the plants that grow there and farming practices they use. We have been to the Big Island several times but have never stayed in Kohala. We found new hikes, good food and fun shopping in Havi, and great snorkel spots and beaches nearby.

Great quiet little place to chill out
Really nice quiet place to get away from all the hustle and bustle and just enjoy some peace and relaxation. I spent a week here and enjoyed it thoroughly. The cottage is clean and quiet and just the right size for one or two. The owners were welcoming and very friendly. There is no TV or radio - but its not that kind of place, so this might not be for everyone. But if you seek to get away from the Kona crowds and the knarly traffic and want to see the stars at night (gorgeous), and just want to walk on country roads, then this is it. There's fresh produce for sale, and friendly young folks that work on the farm. You are just a few blocks walking from Hawi Town center. And only 20 minutes drive to Polulu Valley and maybe 25 minutes to Waipio Valley hiking trails. And if you want the beach scene, maybe 25 minutes to the best beaches on the island (North Kohala area). Waimea is only a 30 minute drive away also. The only thing you can hear at night is the crickets and the breeze. I loved it. - John T

Get away from it all cottage in Hawi
We stayed for three nights, and would have been happy to stay longer. The cottage is new(ish), and was spotless and ready when we checked in. It is a big studio (one room plus bathroom), with two beds and a nice lanai. The kitchen was fully equipped (gas stove!). It is a real farm (but small), so be prepared for that type of activity. You can walk to town, but there's not much there. You will need to drive to get to a beach. The hosts were friendly (thanks again Richard) and helpful. You should go ahead and order some veggies (and eggs) from the staff, they are picked that day, organic and will be the best meal you have on the island. I'm glad we stayed here.

Down on the farm
My son and I had a lovely stay on the farm. Very quiet, private, peaceful place to stay. Close enough to walk to the cute city of Hawi which has many shops to explore. Fresh vegetables and fruit that you can see growing just outside your door and then purchase from the owner for your meals. Owners friendly and helpful. Only negative I can think of was that the chicken coop was fairly close to front door and lanai and this did bring flies when you ate outside. Would definitely stay there again and recommend to all my friends.

Great location on a farm setting!
My husband and I along with our 7 year old daughter stayed at the cottage for five nights and enjoyed our stay tremendously. Our daughter helped garden, as well as collect eggs from the chickens on the farm. She also enjoyed playing fetch with the dog named Kahu. We had stayed at two other vacation properties during our stay on the big Island and this was by far our favorite. The location of the property is excellent in that you can walk right into the town of Hawi as well drive down to the very end and hike the Polulu valley. It is quiet at night and the location of the cottage is quite private. If you're looking to stay in Hawi and enjoy a working farm this is definitely the place to stay!

A mixed experience
We had a great time in Hawi and were definitely like to return. I cant say that we would return to this studio however. On the up side it is extremely well located, we could walk into town which was excellent. The kitchen was really well set up so I prepared several meals. The farm is lush and beautiful. If you choose to book here you need to understand that this is a working farm. There are several farm dogs who roam freely (one of whom is prone to barking ALOT), there is a mob of chickens in their house about 10m from the lanai who make alot of noise for most of the day (until they are freed) and come up on the lanai very happily. The back of the cottage is the farm workshop so power tools are used there. Automatic watering systems come on and flap in the trees right nearby. In our visit, the owners were overseas (which we were not told of beforehand) so we were left in the care of the farm staff. This wouldnt necessarily be a problem but there were issues (persistently barking dog and extremely hard second bed) that had to be sorted. Luckily the young woman looking after us had excellent skills and was able to be resourceful. In the owners favour, our first night was refunded due to the unsatisfactory situations. I am mainly posting this because the other reviews have not explained the whole story here. I would not describe this place as tranquil with all the farm activity going on (plus the amazing barking from every neighbourhood dog each night). Inspite of our difficulties the owner dealt very niecly with each issue once it was brought up. A more proactive approach would have avoided each of these problems but in the end we loved Hawi and appreciated that difficulties were solved.
