About this property

Riverfront Redwood Retreat Nestled in Nature

Nestled in the heart of redwood country and perched atop the high banks of the nationally known wild and scenic Smith River lies the historic Woodmoor Gables Lodge. This beautifully renovated 1936 redwoods retreat has 360-degree views of the tallest trees in the world and the Smith River. Wake up to views of the river and to the sound of it rushing by. Enjoy your coffee in the kitchen or dine in the evenings facing sunsets as the river meanders to the mighty Pacific Ocean.

Our family’s river front gathering place is located directly adjacent to Redwood National and State Parks, in Hiouchi, California, just 15 minutes east of Crescent City and the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Known for sunny summer days and cool evening nights, Hiouchi is considered the area’s gateway to the redwoods, and Woodmoor Gables is the premier riverfront rental property.

The house sits on 1.3 acres of sprawling lawns, gardens, lily ponds and fountains and has a private deck and small orchard. The architecture is reminiscent of the 16th-century Tudor period, providing a classic ambiance with all the modern comforts to make your stay in the heart of the redwoods memorable and relaxing.

Woodmoor Gables has been extensively renovated using top of the line finishes including granite counters, granite tile and maple hardwood flooring throughout as well as all new appliances, handcrafted maple cabinetry, lighting and furniture. An open floor plan and new windows in every room allow unobstructed views of the redwoods and Smith River.

This two-story floor plan offers incredible options to make your stay enjoyable no matter what the season. The first floor offers an expansive kitchen-dining room layout. The kitchen is furnished with a bar-height counter and chairs so you have a wide, open view of the redwoods and river while you host friends and family. The dining area features plenty of seating (with a table for 12 and room for more) to host family gatherings. After dinner, enjoy the crackle of a Northwood’s fire in the living room, while curling up on one of several couches to enjoy an evening’s conversation. The first floor also has two of the most exciting attributes of the lodge: our redwood paneled sunroom which still has the original lead framed windows and our large mahogany paneled game room featuring a regulation pool table, fireplace and 50” flat screen TV, with plenty of games and reading materials to entertain the entire family.

When you are ready for sleep, chose from our 6 tastefully decorated bedrooms:
The Master Suite: located on the second floor, king bed, private view of the river and redwoods, 50” flat screen TV with surround sound system, private walk in closest and master bath with antique claw foot tub and large granite shower
The Fountain Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook and private bath
The Redwood Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook
The Green Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook
The Twin Room: located on the second floor, 2 twin beds, garden view, vaulted ceiling
The Garden Room: located on the first floor, queen bed, private bath, garden view

The Redwoods and the Smith River are a 5 minute walk through the beautifully landscaped grounds or a short drive to the entrance of Redwood National Park. The manicured lawns and gardens are an incredible treat in the spring, summer and fall, and offer a pond, fountain, rose garden, Japanese maples, and unique trees and shrubs found nowhere else in the County. Just up the road from the Park is the quaint little town of Hiouchi, which offers large morning breakfast (Paul Bunyan Style!) and lunch plates, and a small hamlet store for obtaining groceries and gas.

Because we live locally, we can offer a great variety of suggestions to help seed your trip with places to visit and explore including hikes through the redwoods, beaches or coastal dunes, whale watching, magnificent lighthouses, horseback rides on the beaches and in the redwoods, bird watching some of the 413 plus species known to visit Del Norte County and of course fishing on the beautiful Smith River, known for its world record salmon and steelhead fishing.

We love Woodmoor Gables and invite you to enjoy the redwood’s premier lodge while traveling through the Pacific Northwest or fishing our pristine rivers. Woodmoor Gables is that perfect place for large families or groups of friends to gather for an extended stay-cation. We hope you will consider it a home where your entire family can relax and play.

Our caretaker lives on the property in the carriage house, separate from the home and our guests.

Magnificent house overlooking Smith River
We are a group of 9 seniors who visit national parks each year. This spacious house was a perfect base for us to explore Redwoods National and State Parks. The Hiouchi Visitor Center and trail access was just minutes away. The house well served the needs of our group--with several bedrooms & 6 bathrooms. The large kitchen and dining area with windows looking out on the Smith River was a wonderful gathering spot conducive to community. The outdoor patio with tables, chairs, firepit, and barbecues afforded great views of the river and forest beyond. Owners were marvelous hosts who provided helpful communication and ease of check-in. Highly recommended!

I can't even imagine a better place for a Redwoods family reunion. Fantastic location overlooking the river and right next to the redwoods. Beautiful house with really fun architectural details. Plenty of room for all of us. Kitchen with absolutely everything you could possibly want. Wonderful host. I wouldn't change a thing.

You won’t be disappointed
This was our second stay here, and it was just as wonderful as the first. The owners are amazing and always quick to respond to any questions or needs we have. The house is spacious enough for our large family, offering plenty of room for everyone to relax and enjoy themselves. The views are absolutely breathtaking, making every moment spent here special. We love that we can spend our days exploring the forest, taking peaceful walks surrounded by nature. Floating in tubes on the river is a favorite activity for everyone, providing both fun and relaxation. The proximity to Oregon is an added bonus, allowing us to take quick trips to the beach and enjoy stunning sunsets. The house is always fully stocked with everything we need to prepare and cook meals together. Whether we’re cooking in the well-equipped kitchen or having a BBQ out back, we have all the tools and supplies we need. It’s truly a home away from home. Thank you again for another amazing week in the Redwoods and on the river. We look forward to coming back for many more wonderful stays.

Perfect place for a large family get together
We had a wonderful week with my extended family (8 adults and 2 kids). Chris and Lisa's home is so beautiful and spacious, with a gorgeous view of the Smith river and a prime location that makes for a very easy launching pad for adventures in the redwoods or at the beach. We loved the kitchen and dining room being comfortably big enough for a large group. Would strongly recommend!

Redwood Wedding
We booked for a 3 night stay for what unfolded as a fairytale wedding for our daughter in Templeman Grove, about 2 miles from Woodmore Gables (and food catered for the wedding meal from nearby Hiouchi Cafe). The large kitchen/dining and many bedrooms accomadated all of our needs. There were 2 bedrooms/baths downstairs. There were 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms upstairs, but be advised-two of the upstairs bathrooms had usable tubs, but only handheld showers-one mounted low and the other not mounted, and another shower had a window that did not allow females to have privacy; as a result we were sharing one main shower on the upper level. Our daughter, the bride had the amazing master bed/bath on the upper level with a large mirror for getting ready, etc. We were thankful for such a great space for our large group to share this happy time.

Great Location
The house is big, clean, and so charming. We had 6 adults and 8 kids and it fit us well. The kitchen had any pot or pan we needed and some basic seasonings. The washer and dryer worked great and came in handy. Would definitely stay again.

Magical stay
10 ladies came together for a relaxing three days on the river. 6 beds and 5 baths helped keep everyone comfortable. We had ample kitchen space and the owner came swiftly with anything we were missing. The views were amazing and we hiked the Hiouchi trail along the river just down the street. A local reiki healer came and helped us shift our focus for the upcoming season. The outdoor space has so much seating, which was nice and appreciated. Already planning dates to come again next spring!

Celebration of 60!
The house and location is exceptional. The pictures don't really do it justice. The house has the charm of an old style manor, but the kitchen and bathrooms are updated, making the experience much more enjoyable. We were a gathering of college friends of more than 40 years. We had a couple of 17 year olds, everyone was entertained. The pool table and shuffle board were a nice diversion. Our group of 15 plans on definitely coming again.

Thanksgiving in the Redwoods
Beautiful property in a prime location for hiking in the Redwoods. Kitchen was well stocked and home very comfortable including the beds. Enjoyed the waffle maker! We had a perfect week away. Hosts were very responsive and made everything easy. Even brought our French bulldog who enjoyed the big yard while we played shuffle board! Exterior windows need a good cleaning, but other than that, the home was very clean.

Redwood Retreat
This was our 7th annual redwood trip, we have a large group of professional women who join together once a year to celebrate friendship among the trees. This was by far one of the nicest, roomiest, and well thought out properties we’ve stayed at. There was nothing we needed for our meals, celebrations of our veteran group members, etc that wasn’t readily available. The view was literally out of this world. It felt remote but so peaceful. The view exceeded an ocean view. And getting to see all the beautiful falls colors. The host was on top of everything you might need for your stay. Even showed us how to get down to the river. The major bonus was the showers/restrooms. Our group always struggles with getting out to our hikes/dinners etc because everyone needs to get ready but in this property that was not an issue. Big thanks to Chris and his family for sharing their retreat with us and for facilitating another fabulous year in the redwoods!

Couldn’t stop smiling
This property was amazing. It is very comfortable for a friends and family reunion. The dining room was set up to handle our large group and the kitchen was never too small for multiple cooks. I loved the outdoor spaces especially the fire pit. The pool table in the rec room was a whole lot of hilarious laughs for us terrible pool players. This property is located practically in the middle of the redwoods and a quick trip to the shore. I can hardly wait for the next family reunion.

Lots of space to enjoy
This was a great house with lots of space to for little ones to play and adults to hang out. There was plenty of sleeping space for four adult couples and six kids. The kitchen is AMAZING. It is updated and there is so much space that we never felt crowded when we were getting meals prepared. We used the outdoor fire pit nightly and there was plenty of precut firewood to accommodate us. Chris is an outstanding property manager and helped us out almost immediately when we had to get something fixed. He also recommended our favorite hike through the Redwoods. If you want great recommendations, definitely contact him! Know that this property is on a steep cliff. While there are thick bushes with thorns protecting littles from the edge, there were two open spots. This was our only concern with the property with curious kids aged 4-9 -not an issue for adults- but we remedied it by making some of our own barricades and strict rules when kids were playing outside. Because it is on a cliff, it also offers amazing views. We were able to witness some beautiful sunsets from the patio! Overall it was a great stay for our family of 14.

Amazing stay at the beautiful Woodmoor Gables Lodge
Our stay at the Woodmoor Gables Lodge was very enjoyable. The charming home is well furnished with an amazingly large kitchen and dining area. There are many appliances, pots, pans, plates, utensils, etc. The kitchen is very well stocked. The dining table is very large and fit all of us with room to spare. We were impressed with the strip of electrical outlets in the kitchen as we were all able to charge our devices on it. The living room is nicely furnished and the couches were very comfortable. We enjoyed reading the books there. The pool table was used by almost every guest, we had fun playing together! The bedrooms were nicely furnished and decorated and the beds are comfortable. My husband and I slept in the bedroom on the main floor. The bed set is beautifully carved wood, I loved it! We could open the windows and enjoy clean, fresh air as well as enjoy the flowers and beautiful large yard. There is the most beautiful view of the Smith River in the backyard, it is calming and picturesque! The backyard is well stocked with wood to use for cooking s'mores and other items in the 'fire pit'. There are nice barbeque grills for use also. The host greeted us when we arrived. Chris is pleasant, kind, and answered our questions about the area and helped us with suggestions and directions. The setting and yard are beautiful. We are so happy we went to this amazing home.
