About this property
Alpine Adobe - Historic 1930
Escape to the far west of Texas and immerse yourself in nature, art, music, and culture. Stay in a newly restored 1930s Alpine Adobe, right in town, and enjoy a cup of coffee from Big Bend Coffee Roasters while listening to Willie on vinyl. Explore Alpine, visit Museum of Big Bend and hike up to ‘The Desk’ to see stunning Twin Peaks or take a stroll down ‘Mural Alley’ as you shop in downtown Alpine.
A short 30 minute drive to McDonald Observatory in Ft. Davis, Chinati Foundation, Marfa Lights in Marfa, and The Gage, James Evans Gallery in Marathon, Texas
Relax in the Adobe, listen to music, make art, read a book, nap, view the spectacular sunset, and or get out and explore the Big Bend region!
The Alpine Adobe was built in 1930 by artist Elizabeth Keefer Boatright, who’s important in art history. In 1926, she joined Sul Ross State College in Alpine as an art teacher and came up with a cool way to make colored etchings, which was a big deal back then. Two of her beautiful colored etchings are on the front porch of the Adobe.
The Adobe is made from mud bricks that were locally sourced, so it’s got a modern feel with a traditional southwestern vibe. Alpine, Texas, is known for its cool climate. It’s the coolest place in Texas, hands down!
Here are some of the things you’ll find in the Alpine Adobe, 3 Bedrooms/2 bathrooms: fresh sheets, extra pillows, fresh towels, toilet paper, cups, bowls, utensils, soap, body wash, shampoo/conditioner, paper towels, blankets, Wi-Fi, coffee, yoga mats and more.
The fully equipped kitchen has everything you need to cook or make a cocktail. You’ll find a fridge, water and ice with a freezer, pots and pans, plates, bowls, glassware, utensils, two coffee pots (one automatic and one French press), and local ground coffee.
The main bedroom has a king-size bed, a ceiling fan, bedside tables, closets with robes, an iron, and an ironing board. The thick adobe walls and beautiful temple doors.
The second bedroom has a queen-size bed, a bedside table, a closet with a ceiling fan, a robe, and blackout curtains that open to sunlight.
The newly remodeled bathroom has a walk-in shower, a heated toilet seat with a remote control, towels, and a vanity. Drawers have a blow dryer; the washer and dryer are available.
Upstairs:
There’s a full-size bed and twin bunks for the kids. There’s a changing table, a small TV, and a closet. Books, toys, and an indoor sleep bag for your little camper are also available. There’s a full-size bathroom and a tub.
AC/HEAT keeps the house comfortable all year round. Split units with remote controls for hot and cold air throughout the Adobe are available.
The kiva is a beautiful feature of the Alpine Adobe. We’ve also added a HEPA air purifier for each bedroom.
Outside:
Go out and explore! Outside you can enjoy four wooden chairs by the fire pit (check the burn ban before lighting). Or you can dine under the stars and view deer and they stroll on by. Take a walk to Front Street Books, to art galleries and/or write music, while strumming your guitar in the backyard.
On the front porch, you can enjoy a prickly pear margarita or mocktail in the evenings. You can admire the art by Betty Keefer and wave to passersby.
Big Bend Telephone provides fast internet. You can take Zoom meetings and stream from multiple devices if needed. Smart TVs are available for watching your favorite shows. Be sure to bring your login details to stream from your favorite apps.
The entire house and yard are available to guests. Security cameras are outside of the Alpine Adobe. There’s plenty of parking.
The Holland Hotel, Amtrak Train Depot, Sul Ross State University, and Big Bend Museum are all close to the Alpine Adobe. Ask a local for more information on what to do.
The Alpine Adobe is a homegrown dream of the homeowner, and it’s been updated to meet modern safety and living standards. The owners put in a lot of resources and effort to make sure it stays in the Alpine community for friends and family to enjoy.
