Cozy cottage in a beautiful canyon

Dulcy is definitely THE kindest and warmest host we've ever met! She shared the history and stories about the place, and she even prepared delicious brownies and breakfast. We truly enjoyed our time in the canyon, from appreciating the beautiful stars while being in the hot tub to the hours we spent in the creek. The whole experience in the canyon was very special for us; one that we will always cherish fondly. Tip for future travelers: - WiFi is good for basic internet usage (e.g. emails, light browsing), but you will need to be as close as possible to the router (located outside the cottage) - If you go in the summer and are sensitive to mosquitos (like my husband), you might want to bring insect repellent spray/ skin protectant

Spectacular!

Everything inside was perfect. Everything outside was so beautiful: wildflowers, butterflies, birds, the creek, the trails, and the sunrise on canyon wall. If you love nature, this is one of those special places. Dulcy is a generous hostess and wise guide to her lovely part of the Northern California wildlands.

Peaceful Accomodations

Dulcy was a delightful host; she was very accomodating of our specific needs/requests. The provided breakfast in the main house was plentiful and delicious. Overall, the Cottage more than met our needs. The only surprise I had was that a couple of the photos showing amenities were of things at the main house and not at the cottage as I had expected (floor to ceiling fireplace and TV/video entertainment area).

quiet

we had a wonderful stay! my children enjoyed interacting with Dulcy and are still talking about the trip a week later. Next time I will not go in August when it is so HOT! I do have to say that once we got down to the river (it was a little hike to get there) - the water temperature was perfect for playing and Dulcy had provided chairs along the river for our enjoyment. Thank you for your hospitality!

Perfect get away

Dulcy met us with a warm & kind welcome. She drove us to the cabin where some delightful brownies & cookies awaited. The cabin is beautiful & had all the things we needed, it was clean & located in a perfect spot. Dulcy gave us a tour of the trails & canyon & filled us in on all the historical back ground then let us be, to explore. We had beautiful morning hikes, & enjoyed the nice cool water provided by nature! We explored different parts of the canyon stream until we found our perfect spot. Words cannot describe the beautiful blanket of stars & all the beautiful things the eyes can see here at Dulcy's Ranch! We also enjoyed the Jacuzzi although it was much too warm to activate the heating system so we just enjoyed laying in the nice cool water & took in the beautiful view. We enjoyed B-B Q'ing in the nicely arranged spots Dulcy arranged right outside our front door. Dulcy is a very kind & warm person & loves to share her home w/others. I HIGHLY recommend this beautiful cabin where time stops & you can revive from everyday life. I literally left my everyday concerns behind!! It was the perfect place for my husband & I to reconnect & to get some much needed R & R. We hope that in the near future, we can bring our children out to enjoy the cabin, & its surroundings have to offer, the cabin is well suited for children as well!!

The perfect place to rejuvenate mind, body and soul.

A wilderness experience with the comforts of home. The cottage was very clean and comfortable. Dulcy is an excellent hostess. She went above and beyond, paying attention to my sister and my special diet and creating treats just for us that fit! The natural beauty of the property is spectacular. The sounds of the birds and the breeze are all that can be heard save the exception of an occasional aircraft high above. The face-to-face encounter with a bear while on a hike was exhilarating! The wildlife are in abundance along the many hiking options. Canyon Cottage is a place I hope to return to soon and frequent if at all possible.

Clean and comfortable cottage with amazing surroundings

My husband and I stayed with in Dulcy's cabin this past weekend. It was just the escape we were looking for. The cottage was well cared for and had everything we needed. We enjoyed BBQing and sitting outside to eat dinner and enjoy the scenery. The hot tub under the stars was fantastic. Dulcy was an amazing hostess- more than happy to talk with us and share her beautiful property and then leave us time alone to relax. Her property is a little slice of heaven. We planned on staying down at her place once we got there because of others reviews we read and we're glad we did. Complete and total relaxation. We'll definitely come visit again!

Perfect!

The most perfect get away. A fantastic host, a cosy cottage, the most amazing views, a beautiful creek, abundant wildlife, and true peace and quiet. The cottage was spotlessly clean, the beds were comfy, the kitchen was well equipped, and the homemade brownies that greeted us were delicious! Ideally placed for a day trip to Lassen, and close to Chico (great Saturday Farmers Market). Dulcy was so very welcoming to our family, and thoughtful too. We will certainly remember the wonderful time we spent deep in the canyon for many years to come.

Great Get Away

We stayed at this cottage for the weekend. The cottage was very clean and Dulcy had her fantastic pumpkin cake waiting for us. Dulcy showed us around the cottage, explained where everything could be found and how to operate the appliances. After we brought everything inside Dulcy showed us around the property. She showed us some great wading areas in the creek for our children and some tame hiking as well. Dulcy was patient, kind and engaged very easily with our children. She was quick to pick up that our six year old was VERY interested in bears and dinosaurs, so she included some of these topics in our tour. On our last day Dulcy made an amazing brunch for our family. Our family loved it but little did the children know that it was actually very healthy. We really enjoyed our time here. We were able to see a bear and a deer while driving down to the property which made the kids very excited. When we left the kids kept talking about how they wanted to go back to the mountain house and see Dulcy and there bears. Dulcy, Thank you so much for your kindness, patience and hospitality. I have truly never encountered someone who has cared so much for their guests. I hope to come back again when the children have a little older and I know they would love to see you again.

Amazing Surprise Birthday Weekend

I had booked the Canyon Cottage as part of a surprise birthday weekend for my husband. I had communicated back and forth with Dulcy prior to our arrival and had told her our plans (hiking, mountain biking, etc). She told me all about the trails on her property and the pictures looked amazing, but when we arrived, it was better than we could have imagined. Dulcy had baked Birthday Brownies for my husband, and then took us on a hike, showing us several hidden gems on her property. We spent the day mountain biking, hiking, packed a picnic lunch and ate by Big Chico Creek, and ended the day in the hot tub under the stars. Dulcy fixed us an amazing breakfast before we left on Sunday as well. We had an amazing weekend at the Canyon Cottage and would highly recommend this as a getaway in a beautiful location!

Excellent cottage and overall experience! Couldn't recommend this cottage enough.

I'm not usually one for reviews, but I can't help but write just how much my bf and I loved this cottage and more importantly Dulcy (the host). She was wonderful from start to finish and made the stay absolutely perfect. From staying up till midnight so she could guide us down the canyon on the drive in, cooking the most delicious (and healthy) brunch, going on a walk with me around the property, pointing out all the places we could explore, and even mailing me my phone when I left it behind the very next day, she's one of the loveliest people I've ever met. And that is only an addition to the absolutely gorgeous canyon that this property is in. You wake up to mesmerizing cliffsides to look out over and beautiful forest and creek to explore (the pictures don't do it justice). You can even hang out in the hot tub under the stars at night. Would recommend that you bring a couple good books and some groceries so you can bask in the property and don't have to make any trips out of the canyon. Can't wait till we get to visit again!

Wonderful experience!

We loved our weekend here! The cottage is very nice and Dulcy is a lovely woman. She showed us hiking trails and how to get around the huge property, and breakfast was great too. The hot tub is a wonderful way to relax and the view is fantastic. Although Dulcy's house is about 30 yards away you really have no idea someone is around unless you actively seek her out. We would recommend bringing in your own food and planning not to leave the property, you can, but the drive down is a bit long just to go to dinner and come back, plus this is a place you come to get away from town. The cottage is clean and well kept and even though you are only 20 or so minutes from Chico you feel a world away, very relaxing. If you want to have a weekend to walk/hike/jog, to be in the quite of nature, to read, or meditate, or do yoga, connect with your self or your partner or to stay in your pajamas all darn day, this is seriously the place to come. We will definitely come here again for another weekend next year.

So peaceful

We had a wonderful stay - the cottage has every convenience you might want, but you are surrounded by nature. Quiet and secluded. We enjoyed spending days walking the trails and reading by the creek. I was so impressed with all of the California native vegetation and Dulcy's warm hospitality.

In a League of Her Own

There are so few places that one can really boast about nowadays. I write a lot of reviews and don't feel I can do this place justice. Also, I'd rather keep it a secret so that it doesn't fill up too fast. Entering the canyon to Dulcy's peaceful oasis is a bit like entering Jurassic Park. You'll want your four wheel drive, preferably the one with the sun roof so you can open it and look at the trees canopying the entire drive down. The dirt road meanders for awhile, allowing the mind to kick into vacation mode. Enter imagination, nostalgia and folly left stage meeting nature, beauty and the kindness of a dear woman coming in from the right. You find yourself smack dab in someplace you didn't realize you always wanted to be. It is peaceful and quiet. The home is very charming and clean. A better hostess couldn't be found than Dulcy Schroeder. The kids love having their own loft to sleep in. We loved having our own room separate from them. My husband brought his mountain bike and ran into a bear somewhere on the trail. We all spent a half day walking down and up the creek. Dulcy made us breakfast one morning and I was thrilled to be offered gluten free pancakes. Not just gluten free, but extremely healthy gluten free. Something I could enjoy and not feel at all guilty about. While the rental is dog free, Dulcy has a couple of her own. We enjoyed playing with her dogs. They were happy to follow us to the creek and play. One of her cats followed me on my morning walk and let me know profoundly when she thought I had walked just a bit too far. Birds are everywhere. And deer. I only wish we could move in. We did go to Chico for a day but found there was so much adventure at the little cabin by the creek, we wanted to spend our time there instead. Chico alums who have history playing in the creeks may find themselves swooning from nostalgia here. This is truly a treasure. And Dulcy is a remarkable woman to take such good care of this extraordinary place.

Great Getaway

Beautiful, secluded area. Dulcy is a terrific hostess, great to talk to! Our group of 4 had enough room to spread out. We enjoyed the trails, the deer, and the views. Chico is a short drive away. We did a day trip to Lassen, but there is plenty to see and enjoy if you just want to stay put!

This Was a Winner!

My husband and I stayed here in the cottage for 4 days/3 nights and enjoyed every minute of it! Very, very peaceful and quiet. Close access to the creek and a wonderful tour from Dulcy, the owner, of the area surrounding the creek. There are several spots to simply sit down in and enjoy the water and the view. The location is remote, at the bottom of a canyon, but Chico itself isn't terribly far away. We brought our own food and so never left the cottage for meals. It was incredibly private and on the last day, Dulcy was kind enough to prepare a lovely breakfast for us. My husband and I occupied ourselves with reading, some walking, wading in the creek, and just generally staring off into the distance! For us, it was perfect.

unexpected sanctuary

We were out of options for staying in Chico for graduation; how fortunate we were to have found this treasure. It is secluded, but close enough to come and go from Chico activities. We plan to return next time we come to northern Cal. and just stay put and enjoy the rare, natural comfort and beauty this getaway offers. The cabin is immaculate, stylish and comfortable. The owner is beyond hospitable, and delightful. We felt like we made a good friend when we left and want to come back just to visit more.

Peaceful and Serene

From the moment we arrived to the not ready to leave departure, we loved every minute at the cottage. Unfortunately we were in Chico for a wedding and didn't get to spend much time enjoying the surroundings, but we took in as much as we could. Cannot say enough about Dulcy, so very gracious and knowledgeable. I would love to say it was a terrible place just to keep it all to myself, but it is just too good not to share with everyone. My wife was so elated she got to see a Bear running across the road, it was the highlight of her visit in Chico. The cottage was perfect, and the loft was great for out 13yr old. Thank you again Dulcy for the great experience and hopefully sometime in the near future we can come and park our car and just enjoy the canyon for a few days.

Gorgeous Location, Charming Cottage

I cannot say enough about how wonderful this place was. It's so pretty you feel like you are camping in a national park, yet you have all the comforts of home in the charming little cottage. It is very private and peaceful, and so quiet except for the sounds of nature and the creek, yet you are only a short drive from Chico. Dulcy was lovely: gracious, welcoming, and so knowledgeable about the flora and fauna in the canyon. We hope to be back!

Relaxing retreat

The canyon is a beautiful, relaxing place. Dulcy is an excellent source of knowledge of the area and she goes above and beyond in making guests feel welcome and special (her waffles are to die for)! Celebrating 10 Years

My wife and I spent our 10th anniversary at the Canyon Cottage and we loved being there. Dulcy went out of her way to make it special, including a heart-shaped brownie dessert to welcome us the first day. She also worked with me to surprise my wife with a couple's massage. The highlights for me were sitting by the wood stove (lit with a cozy fire, of course) and taking walks in and around the canyon. Thanks for everything, Dulcy!

Very relaxing stay!

My husband and I stayed at the cottage for a few days in March. It was exactly what we were looking for...relaxing and tons of access to the beautiful landscape right outside our door. Dulcy was above and beyond what we'd expect from a host and she made us feel right at home, giving us privacy when we wanted but also being available for information. She even made us a delicious breakfast on one of the mornings! We loved being close to Lassen Natl park and explored the area during one of our days visiting. The Cottage is definitely remote so if you are looking for a retreat from everyday hustle and bustle, choose to come here! You can't beat the sound of the creek, the wildlife or the clear sky packed with stars at night (which we enjoyed while sitting in the hot tub). We can't recommend it enough to anyone who will listen.

About the host

Hosted by Dulcy Schroeder

Host profile image
“After living in this special canyon for 14 years, I realized that one of my favorite activities was sharing the canyon with others. Chico Canyon Retreat grew from that love. The location is unusually pristine and we have worked hard over the years to enhance that pristine characteristic as we work to return the land to its native state.

Why they chose this property

It is not often one gets to live where one would vacation, but that is exactly what happened to me. We spent several years using every vacation to visit cliff dwellings in the southwest. Then came the interest in the WPA lodges in our National Parks and the way natural materials from the surroundings were used in the construction. Put that together with a love of camping under the stars, mix it well, and the result was Chico Canyon Retreat.

What makes this property unique

In the morning, imagine sitting on the viewing deck with a cup of coffee as you watch the sun touch the canyon rim and move down the face as it illuminates the entire canyon. The many birds become active as the sun creeps into the canyon. Maybe you'll see a flock of turkeys passing by on the way to the creek. You may want to experience an early morning creek hike as you watch the canyon awaken. View the creek from the 1935 bridge on the property and let your mind wander past the beauty and into the history of what is before you: the cultural history of the Maidu tribe and the geological history of at least 75 million years. Fill your day with exploration of the hiking trails and creek or just find a special hideaway and curl up with a book. Cap your day with a hot tub soak under the stars. These are just some of the things that make your stay at the Canyon Cottage unique.
