About this property

Traditional thatched cottage near the sea: log burner, paddock

Bridge Cottage is one of a handful of traditional thatched cottages left in Donegal. It dates back over two hundred years and is situated in a quiet rural location near the sea, just five minutes' drive from Ireland's 'Wild Atlantic Way'. This beautiful cottage has been carefully restored with many of its original features intact. The relaxed and peaceful atmosphere of a cosy log-burning stove, wooden ceiling and stone tiled floor -with warm rugs in the living areas - is combined with all modern comforts including a strong WIFI connection.

2024 AVAILABILITY (Updated AUGUST 2024)
The cottage is still free for the following nights:
2nd - 5th September
16th - 22nd September
There is also good availability from 6th October. Please ask.

Dogs welcome - STRICTLY BY ARRANGEMENT ONLY - Please ask.
Plenty of outside space. Dogs are not allowed on the sofa or beds.

The fully equipped separate kitchen has an extra large cooker to cater for a family. There are two bedrooms with comfortable beds, colourful bedspreads and wooden furniture; the second bedroom has an adjoining washroom and toilet.

The first bedroom has a double bed and the other bedroom has two single beds. There is also a substantial folding bed (suitable for a child.) This folding bed will fit in the double bedroom. In addition, there is a travel cot for a baby or toddler. In the living area, there is an additional booster seat for a small child to sit at the table.

To the rear of the cottage is a large relaxing sun terrace equipped with outdoor furniture, with lovely views of blossom in spring and of sheep grazing on the hillside beyond. This terrace and the rear of the cottage are completely private. Adjoining the terrace is a large, enclosed paddock belonging to the cottage. It is bordered by a stream, whose calming sounds add to the relaxing ambience.

There is private parking for several cars in a gated area.

The cottage is located on a quiet country road. The area surrounding it offers beautiful landscapes of lochs and glens and it is a very short drive to experience stunning seascapes - this is an ideal location to discover both mountains and sea. The coastline offers miles of stunning white beaches, rugged cliff tops and sheltered coves - all within easy reach. The lighthouse at St John's Point lies at the end of a wild and scenic peninsula just to the south of Bridge Cottage and provides a fantastic walk, drive or cycle ride. The highest cliffs in Europe at Slieve League and the beautiful Blue Stack Mountains are also easily accessible.

The cottage is not remote - the village of Dunkineely with its village shops and cosy pubs offering traditional music is 5 minutes' drive away. A little further afield, the colourful town of Donegal can be reached in 20 minutes. Killybegs, the largest fishing port in Ireland, is also just 15 minutes from the cottage.

Inland, the countryside is wild and unspoilt with quiet roads winding past vistas of mountains, lakes and waterfalls. The famous Glenveagh National Park is within driving distance, offering wonderful walking, lochs, hills and forests. Nearby Ardara is a centre for the traditional craft of weaving and offers many opportunities to buy Donegal tweed and woolens.

This part of south west Donegal is steeped in cultural history. For instance, in Glencolmcille, there is a fascinating Folklore Museum where visitors can experience local life in a collection of thatched cottages dating through the centuries. In Donegal town, there is a fascinating castle and the Railway Heritage Centre gives information on its history through photographic displays, guides to the old routes and treasured railway memorabilia.

Local activities include horse-riding, sea fishing, hiking and boat trips. Those interested in history will also enjoy the Heritage Centre in Killybegs with its interesting insights into fishing and carpet making in the area over the years. There is a demonstration on the hand-knotting loom and the largest loom of its kind in the world is on display here.

Inside the cottage, you will find a pack of information about the local area as well as local walking maps, guides and books. The Visitor's Book is full of helpful suggestions for excursions, walks, activities and places to eat and shop. Wherever you go, you will be met by friendly locals who always have time for a chat - life is unhurried and uncomplicated in this part of Ireland. Staying in a traditional thatched cottage is a unique experience and, at Bridge Cottage, it is easy to become immersed in a timeless way of life amidst beautiful, unspoilt and peaceful surroundings.

There are sometimes a couple of Donegal sheep in the paddock but they can be moved if necessary!

DISCOUNTS FOR STAYS OF 7 NIGHTS OR MORE
Three nights minimum in summer months unless the cottage shows availability for two nights.
Seven night stays from Saturday to Saturday preferred in July and August unless the calendar shows availability less .
Charge of 5 euros per large bag for removal of rubbish.

Could have been better
After we drove to pick up keys we went to the house. We went in unloaded some luggage and when we went back the door was locked with keys inside. Would have appreciated heads up about the door self locking behind you. Also no linens and towels. We had to drive back to contact’s house get a spare key and ask her to make beds and provide towels. She followed us back in her car and provided all necessities..

The cottage was a great home base for exploring County Donegal. We were comfortable there and enjoyed being able to cook our own meals and sit by the fire in the evening. You can tell that the host has made an effort to provide the amenities that make one feel at home.

Quiet oasis
What more could we have asked for! If you desire a stay in a thatched roof cottage with sheep in the yard this is for you. Toasty warm inside and well appointed for meals. A nice peaceful stay away from larger towns yet easy to drive to the beautiful sights. We bought laundry detergent but there was plenty already. Thank you Sue!

Bridge Cottage
We enjoyed our stay at this cute cottage! Plenty of room for 3 adults and nice to be able to spread out a bit. We loved the authentic feeling of the stove. My husband and son are over 6 feet so did hit their heads a couple times on the low door frames. lol Thanks Sue for the lovely stay.

Hervorragendes Cottage

Beautiful countryside
This cottage was perfect for me and my teenage daughter to explore Donegal county. It was centrally located so that we could go to the town of Donegal, Dunkineely, Slieve League, Ardara, Carrowmore, and the list goes on.… Beautiful mornings everything we needed inside the cottage. Very clean and comfortable. Highly recommend! The sheep in the backyard where icing on the cake!

A wonderful stay
We spend very nice 2 weeks at Bridge Cottage. A full and cosy equipped house history and with much place around, calm and in a very interesting region, with Donegal towns close by (Killybegs, Ardara, Donegal etc.). Altogether a very successful and instructive stay, we were in Ireland for the first time, surely not for the last time.

We loved staying in this cozy cottage in the country! Exactly what I envisioned for a quaint Irish cottage! The check in process was easy and Sue was lovely. We enjoyed exploring along the wild Atlantic way and having fresh seafood in Killybegs.

Beautiful & unique cottage!
A one-of-a-kind experience! Our stay in the cottage was comfortable and so relaxing. While we didn't meet Dolly, there were plenty of sheep in the green fields nearby (as well as a donkey). The cottage was clean and cozy and easy to navigate, with a well-appointed kitchen that made cooking simple. The back patio was a perfect place to sip coffee or a Guinness after exploring the local beaches and trails. While we didn't use the stove, the living room was a comfy space for a night of reading more about Northern Ireland. We hope to come back!

Fun stay in a cute thatched cottage
The cottage was as adorable as advertised. Complete with sheep greeting you in the morning and beautiful grounds all around you. The road is a little bit nerve wracking to drive down, but you can park off the road which is nice and somewhat rare in Ireland. Make sure you grab food to eat before you arrive or plan on driving a bit to locate some as there is not a lot in the immediate area.

Charming cozy cottage in a great location
We really enjoyed our stay - the cottage is well equipped and furnished very much in keeping with the style of the house with warm colours and traditional furnishings. Great location with countryside peace and quiet but close enough to beaches and to the fantastic wild Atlantic way coastline. Highly recommended

Lovely Irish Cottage
We really enjoyed our stay in this traditional cottage. The place warmed up pretty quickly and we were very comfortable there. We truly enjoyed the visit from the two cute sheep, Dolores and Hope. They would come to the fence every day when we went out. It was a great place and everything was ready for us when we got there.

I am an escaped teacher, but haven't quite escaped education ... I live in Yorkshire, love travel, camping, wild places and this part of Ireland.
I bought the cottage 18 years ago whilst holidaying in the area. I love spending time there and sharing this special place with others. Part of the fun is making the cottage and its garden as inviting as possible - and always finding new places to explore in this lovely corner of Donegal.
