About this property

Private Oceanfront "Coppertop" house, Acadia National Park

Year-round modern house near Northeast Harbor, Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor - on Somes Sound, with extraordinary views throughout the house, in Acadia National Park. This thoughtfully designed unique property commands lovely south and westerly ocean and mountain views across Somes Sound. Surrounded by towering pines and affording plenty of privacy, Copper Top is sure to be a rental favorite with its custom woodwork, beautiful furnishings, and comfortable layout. Each bedroom has its own unique benefit--making it easy to decide who sleeps where. Bedrooms are nicely sized with closets, bureaus, seating and very comfortable beds and linens-- and each near a bathroom with powerful shower heads.

We are encourage longer-term rentals and we now have a 2-week minimum during July & August months. Please reach out if interested in a month or longer for the 2025 season. Coppertop is now more equipped for those who can work remotely w/2 standing desks, printer and excellent wifi. Update: We added heat pumps, for bedroom cooling and ocean breezes keep the center of the house very comfortable.
CopperTop was designed and sited into a granite ledge and opens up to a stunning ocean/mountain view that includes "seal ledge", where seals can be observed cavorting on sun-warmed rocks. Refined interior finishes which include luxury mattresses, buttery red birch flooring, a master bath with a walk-in shower and a very large cast iron tub with ocean views. All bathrooms are tiled with great storage and lighting. A chef's kitchen with custom-built kitchen cabinets, honed granite countertops and high-end appliances, a variety of LED lighting that makes this cook's kitchen sing--roomy with lots of counter space and easy to whip out your best recipes. Wifi, Sonos sound system (play your own Spotify/Pandora music), fireplace and lots of extra open well-lit space. One end of the house includes a den with a wide-screen television and its own deck. You can also close off that end of the house w/large custom wooden slider doors-- allowing for study, TV viewing etc--and it also serves as a small living room area for that bedroom on that western end of the house. Downstairs has lots of light, generous ocean views and another bedroom suite with its own tiled bathroom and deck. That downstairs den can either function as living room area for the queen-bedded room or an office with 2 standing desks and a wifi printer and day bed--that room can also be closed off for privacy and quiet study with heavy wooden slider doors --left wide open for easy access to the downstairs deck and pathway to the ocean. The downstairs hallway also leads to a large laundry room and as well as a yoga/movie viewing/play room ---now functioning as another large (5th) bedroom--which also has an ocean and mountain view. We have added a 2nd wide screen TV in that 5th bedroom. Terraced granite steps take you down to the water's edge of Somes Sound--the only natural fjord on the eastern seaboard. The expansive upper deck is perfect for gatherings and sharing the magnificent view, the hush of the wind in the pines, and the call of resident loons, ospreys and eagles. There is also a hot outdoor shower to warm you up after an ocean dip. Coppertop offers you a front row vantage point to watch summer sailboat races and other boating activity, wildlife and harbor seals. We love to swim in Somes Sound, which is significantly warmer than the open ocean and afterwards, to sprawl out on the sun-warmed granite rocks. Somes Sound is perfect for kayaking, paddle boarding and exploring marine fauna and ever-changing bird watching.

Perfection!

Everything about our stay and about this house was pretty much perfect. The photos are accurate, and Angela is lovely and helpful. Beyond all of that, the house is just gorgeous, the views are spectacular - the location is super convenient making getting into Northeast, Southwest or Bar Harbor all super easy. To top it all off, it’s the best equipped rental I’ve ever stayed in - the kitchen is loaded with top of the line appliances, great pots and pans, and everything you can think of (I did bring my own espresso machine ;), but it had a great coffee maker, bean grinder, water kettle and even an ice maker. I’d give it 12 out of 10 stars if I could. I would love to come back again!

Best house in Maine

Beautiful house and property. The kitchen is fully stocked for all the chefs in your group. The bedrooms are quiet and the beds are very comfortable. The house was spotless and all the furniture/art work was top of the line. The whole house is a work of art. One of the best parts.....the sunsets sitting on the deck. Gorgeous. You'll love Angela. She's so helpful and ready to make your stay extra special.

Great Views and Location

Incredible location and relaxing environment for adults. The interior architecture is gorgeous, and comes with plenty of instructions for care and maintenance. The owner is meticulous and involved. While perhaps not ideal for larger families or a relaxed family gathering, it is ideal for older adults or a couple. More of an oasis of serenity for reading, reflection and a great base camp while taking in surrounding Acadia National Park. One bedroom has an en suite bathroom, others are shared with other bedroom guests encouraging togetherness. The views are the show, and with no TV in great living room/family room, it’s easy to avoid screens and focus on each other. Our family loved the area. Plenty of great restaurants, incredible natural beauty that is accessible for all ages and physical capabilities.

40th anniversary trip

The location was perfect for our 3 generation family. We loved being in close proximity to Bar Harbor and Acadia but enjoyed coming back the the peace and quiet of nature away from the crowds when we returned. Our grandsons favorite part was “exploring” the land and shore. The kitchen was well equipped for our big dinners and also our family lobster boil. Also, the AC worked great on some hot afternoons.

Family getaway

Our favorite vacation to date!! We loved our stay at Coppertop. This beautiful home was clean, comfortable, and the kitchen was well equipped. The location was perfect! Close to Bar Harbour and Acadia with a private setting. We loved sitting on the deck and watching the seals. Angela is an amazing host. She is very communicative, responsive, and always willing to help make the stay as perfect as possible. I highly recommend and we will hopefully be back!

An architectural gem on the sound

The property Coppertop is absolutely stunning. The architecture is a wonderful blend of natural woods and much glass providing a warm setting and bright view of Sommes Sound from virtually every room. The kitchen is very well appointed so we cooked in many nights as we didn't want to leave the property. It was very relaxing trip and close to Acadia and Bar Harbor if we wanted to venture out. Angela was very responsive to questions and her dining recommendations were spot on. We look forward to returning to Coppertop in years to come.

Magical stay

We enjoyed a week-long stay at magnificent Coppertop this October. The location of the home, in addition to offering incredible views of Somes Sound and breathtaking sunsets, was extremely convenient to Acadia hiking trailheads, Bar Harbor, and many wonderful restaurants and attractions across Mt. Desert. The house is beautifully designed and furnished, with a cook's kitchen that is shockingly well equipped. We have traveled extensively around the world and have been fortunate to stay in some incredible homes and hotels, and our experience at Coppertop would rival many of our favorite trips.

Gorgeous property!

One of the most beautiful homes we have ever rented. The location and views were phenomenal, the home was laid out extremely well and sparkling clean. Angela was super helpful, even leaving us some goodies upon check in! A great location for scenic nature but convenient to Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor. Indoor and outdoor areas great for groups but also plenty of privacy in the way that the bedrooms/bathrooms are planned out. It also has the most fully stocked kitchen of any home we have ever rented. Tremendous attention to detail inside and out -- we felt completely at home and can't wait to visit again!

WELL-EARNED 5-Star HOUSE

My husband and I have rented various homes over the years with family and friends and each has had outstanding features that we have enjoyed. But this was the first house where each room outdid our expectations. We were greeted with a bottle of wine, chocolate, and a beautiful bouquet of flowers. The architecture of the home was spectacular and it was meticulously spotless. The linens, bedding, and kitchenware were of the highest quality. The kitchen shelves were stocked with more supplies than we could have asked for. The firewood and kindling were generously available. The location was very private and excellent for our daily outings. And the view from the balcony was constantly changing and always stunning. Thank you Angela for your exceptional attention to every detail. We will always have fond memories of your 5-star house.

An amazing experience!

We have rented some very lovely homes, but nothing tops this rental experience. Angela has been such a wonderful host, full of great suggestions for activity and dining. And the home itself was incredible! The architecture is beautiful, with amazing views from 5 of the spacious rooms of the Sound, the rocky outcrops, the seals and water birds, the sailboats, the moonlight, and the sparkling evening lights of homes the opposite shore. The interior is designed for maximum bedroom privacy, with graceful pocket doors providing great flexibility and enabling a 2nd bedroom to have an "ensuite" bathroom. The fireplace, set on a large granite ledge and well stocked with wood and kindling, was a delight. And the kitchen proved to be a phenomenal place to cook. It seemed to have EVERYTHING! Better stocked with specialty pots and pans and appliances than our kitchen at home. And it is so well designed, it was easy for multiple people to work in. And the dining room, with beautiful views of the sound, was a joy. But I cannot omit raving about the deck. A wonderful spot for the eight of us to enjoy morning coffee and evening cocktails, listening to the seals and shore birds. Bring those binoculars!

Maine Magnificence

Coppertop is an architectural gem on Mount Desert Island. The location, siting and design of this home are very special. The property has been in the family of our host, Angela, for decades, and she grew up summering there in the original cabin (now dubbed The Nub, and also available for rent). Coppertop is the newer, bigger structure on the property, set out of sight of The Nub, and has incredible views of Somes Sound. Because of the family's history, familiarity and love or the land, so many details were considered that might not have been. There must also be some incredible cooks in the family because the kitchen is not only spectacular and a fabulous space to work, but is remarkably well equipped with high quality appliances and tools, including sharp knives (telltale). The house is well laid out and offered more than ample privacy for our group of 4 couples. There's no shortage of outdoor experiences and adventures available on MDI, that is assuming you feel compelled to leave the property. Our stay was restful, luxurious and graced by spectacular sunsets each evening which we enjoyed from the huge outdoor deck. We felt incredibly fortunate to be able to spend a week here, and would return in a heartbeat.

We couldn't have picked a better house for our trip to Acadia. Angela's home was beautiful, immaculate and comfortable. Spectacular House

This property has the “wow” factor. The house is gorgeous and the views are simply incredible. The kitchen is well equipped and the house has all the essentials. The house was spotlessly clean & every room was both comfortable and beautifully decorated. I would love to stay here again in the future. The one note I would highlight for future guests is to bring slippers or indoor-only shoes for the lower level as the floors can be a little slippery in socks. Finally, Angela is very responsive and her list of suggested restaurants and hikes was very helpful. Thanks for a wonderful house for our family vacation!

Wonderful Stay

The house was beautiful with gorgeous views of the lake. It was thoughtfully designed, immaculate and very well maintained. The layout was just perfect for a family of 6 adults and a toddler. The house was centrally located - literally 15 min from Bar Harbor and all the major attractions / hikes. Angela was great - very responsive. We will definitely return and make this our home base for our next visit to Acadia.

About the host

Host profile image
We love Mount Desert island and enjoy sharing our special place on Somes Sound. In designing the house, it was our goal to create warm, welcoming and and highly functional space--allowing for a unique experience you, your family and guests. We took great pleasure in designing an efficient and well-stocked kitchen --while also attending to the visual esthetics of each room and considering every detail. Copper Top feels more like home, not a rental--which was my personal goal in supporting overall special experience.

Why they chose this property

Our house will attract people who want to be in nature but who also appreciate the comforts of well thought-out interior rooms and furniture. You and your family/friends might enjoy kayaking (currently a rental), watching eagles, observing seals and passing sailboats. And if you enjoy ocean swimming, we encourage you to walk down the stone steps for a refreshing dip in Somes Sound. Bring a book, binoculars or paints--you won't want to go anywhere else. Northeast Harbor is just down the road--4/5-minute drive or easy bike ride along Sargeant Drive (scenic). Bar Harbor is a 12-minute drive where you will find grocery stores, a natural food market and farmer's market (Sundays) and many shops and restaurants in addition to ferries to outer islands. What most people comment on is how our house/site offers the best of both; peace and quiet--away from the summertime madding crowds yet within easy proximity to all harbor towns and park trails. There are very few access points to Somes Sound making our site perfect for kayaking, canoeing, swimming and exploring.

What makes this property unique

The island carriage roads are very accessible and from the house, it's just a 3-minute drive to the best day hikes or walk from the house to Giant Slide which connects other a network of other mountains. Northeast Harbor is just a 8-minute drive away--wonderful shops and dining. Bar Harbor is about a 15-minute drive. Southwest Harbor is just across the Sound; 18 minutes drive. Mount Desert island offers a wide variety of activities with ferries to explore nearby islands, bike/walk carriage roads, golf, many fresh waster lakes and ponds, sailing and boating, fishing, great hiking. You might want to pick up a pizza or two and drive your group up to the top of Cadillac mountain for sunset dining! But you most probably won't want to leave the house with so much at your fingertips; exploring the tidal pools, lying on sun-baked rocks and truly relaxing.
Ps: Once you have decided on Copper Top, please give us a bit of information about your group; rental history on the island or elsewhere (if applicable), ages of any children and other basic information about yourselves--helps make the booking process go a lot more easily. We allow a maximum of 10 guests in the summer and a maximum of 8 guests for spring, late fall and winter months and a total of 6 guests off-season; winter and early spring (Feb, March, April). If your group is made up of friends, we do ask for first/last names of everyone and basic information. As you might imagine, knowing more about new guests helps in supporting an excellent stay for all. :)
