About this property

A very comfortable house, close to Miami beach with a large tropical garden

Driftwood is a pretty 3 bedroom house with polished wooden floors and a wrap around veranda, surrounded by a lovely tropical garden with fruit trees and a huge mango tree - visited by a family of monkeys each morning! Driftwood is 100yds from Freights bay, known as the best beginners surfing spot on the island. The house is also a few mins walk from Miami beach, with its white coral sands and gentle waves - perfect for swimming. There is a great old bus on the beach which serves rum punch, soft drinks and homemade snacks on picnic tables under the shady Casuarina trees. At the house there is a fully fitted kitchen, a separate study/TV room and large living room with a big veranda overlooking the garden. All the bedrooms are equipped with AC which is paid for separately, although most guests prefer to use the overhead ceiling fans, as the house is made of a tropical hardwood (Greenheart) which keeps the house cool on the hottest days.
There are three double bedrooms and two bathrooms, 1 en-suite. There is also great tv room/study with a sofa bed and chairs for watching movies and tv in the evenings. The kitchen is fully equipped and includes a large American style fridge. At night sipping drinks on the veranda, listening to the tree frogs and looking at tropical garden in the twilight is a great experience and the early morning visit by the mango tree from the visiting family of monkeys is not to be missed!
Notes: please note we only accept adults and children over 5 only. Please also note we have a very pretty 1 bedroom apartment with its own balcony and separate entrance which can be rented at the same time for extra guests.
Please ask for details.

Driftwood Review
Driftwood is a beautiful home in a great area. The host responded to our needs quickly and kindly and we were in a great location close to Miami Beach and our family. There were indeed cute monkeys most mornings, which was amazing.

Great location and space for family
We enjoyed our week at Driftwood. We had rented a car and found the location a great place to launch from every day — be it staying in the area or to your the island.

Fantastic location
The house is in a great area, back deck was very peaceful and quiet. There are a few issues with the kitchen area that need to be attended to. The house layout was very nice. Would definitely stay again if issues were resolved.

Great stay in Barbados
We really enjoyed staying our stay. The property is charming the lot of nice wood features with a great garden outback. We chose it for its proximity to the freights bay surfing spot and it was great for carrying our boards to the beach. The housekeeper Denise, and the maintenance man Reggie were excellent. We would definitely stay here again.

Driftwood has seen better days
Driftwood is a house that has experienced better times. The pictures on Vbro are misleading. The property needs a renovation. We experienced numerous problems during our stay that necessitated an early departure. We were scheduled to stay five more days but changed our flight to return with our friends. The refrigerator was broken and an attempt to repair it was ongoing. The toilet bowl tank in the master suite was broke. We were told by the manager is a design. The maintenance man crazy glued the porcelain piece back in place. The wooden frame bed in the master suite was broken. The toilet on the first floor was broke and leaked until it was finally fixed about five days later. The Gate to the property was broken. We got stuck inside for two hours until we managed to open it. It remained broke throughout our stay. It rained hard one night and the roof between the two bedrooms on the first floor leaked. We had to put a pan to catch the water. The TV room had a musty smell to it. The cabinet that contained the books and games was moldy. The day we left the old coffee pot broke, and the refrigerator was still not working. The pots and pans are old. There was a knob missing from the stovetop. The washing machine and dryer are ancient. The wrap around porch with the gardens have seen better days. What made matters worst was the Manager Margaret Carrington who we only saw on our first day. She stopped taking our calls and would respond with a text 5 am the next morning. I contacted the owner Dagny Bain, who I am still waiting for a return call.

Fabulous Driftwood
Driftwood is a fabulous family home to stay in, so close to the beach yet far enough away from the bustle on a quiet street. Everything you need is in the house, the bed was big and comfy, the breeze that blew in stopped any need for airconditioner , the family room had enough games and books for months to play or read. Denise and Margaret amazing We will be back

Exactly as advertised
The home was just as we had hoped and then some! It had character and style and was conveniently located to Freights Bay (beginner's surf beach) and town. Everyone was comfortable in the house and wished we could have stayed longer. Also, Margaret, the manager of the home was absolutely delightful and very, very helpful.

Lovely house
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Driftwood. The location is terrific for surfing and Miami Beach. Miami Beach is a 15 minute walk and Oistens another 10. We often walked to the grocery store as well which is about 20 minute walk. If you are elderly bring good walking shoes as the roads can be uneven . The house is beautiful and the wrap around verandah lovely . The yard is very pretty and the breeze keeps the house cool. Their is an apartment attached to the house however minimal noise if it is rented . The bathrooms spacious and the TV room has lots of books and games . Denise and Margaret were lovely and always available. We would visit again.

Beautiful house in a fantastic location
We stayed in the 3 bedroom house for our honeymoon and loved the design and comfort of the house. Its exactly as described on a quiet block just up the street from Freights Bay. We didn't need the AC as the ceiling fans and breeze that comes through the windows keeps the house cool. We would definitely return again. Great find!

Great Family Trip
One of the best vacations our family has ever enjoyed together. This place was perfect for our family. There are so many different places in the house and outside for all of us to spread out. Afternoons spent on the back porch or in the garden area were some of our best memories. The area is very quiet with almost no traffic on the street. We had a little difficulty finding the house since there are two #8 addresses on this street. Driftwood is on the left about a block down from the beach. We found our house with the help of friendly neighbors down the street. All of the people we met in Barbados were the most friendly and welcoming folks we have ever met. Wonderful island. My son and I really loved being able to garb our surfboards in the morning and walk 5 minutes down the street to Freights Bay surf spot. It wasn't the right time of year for good surf but we had so much fun sliding along in the small waves and watching the turtles duck under the water. It doesn't get any better than this. We would definitely recommend this place especially for families. A car is very handy to have but Ostins is about a 15 minute walk which we did often. The Friday night fish fry in Ostins is a must do. Gary Henderson

Great location but very hot
We spent a week at Driftwood recently for a wedding in Barbados. The house is conveniently located to the beach and to Oistens. We could not really be in the house during the day because of the heat. We spent the majority of our time on the veranda, which is lovely and breezy, even eating most meals there. We did pay for air conditioning, but kept it off downstairs during the day so that we could have windows and doors open to create some air flow inside. We kept the a/c on upstairs and kept the bedroom door closed, but it would lose ground during the day and still get very warm. This was a real problem for getting ready for the wedding. There was no place cool enough at noon to get ready for a 2:00 wedding. The mosquitos were pretty bad also (not sure if anything can be done about that). The only other complaint is the master bedroom sheets and mattress cover were worn out. I don’t usually complain, but I used the reviews to pick this house as I always do, and I now know all the comments about the veranda are there because it’s the only cool part of the house. If you don’t mind the heat, then the house would be fine, otherwise.

Loved our stay! Clean and plenty of room!
We loved our stay! Dagny answered all our questions quickly, Margaret the property manager is very personable and informative. Mid week the maid came in to tidy up for us. We rented a van so that our family of 6 could explore the whole island. We love Barbados and hope to visit again and we would stay at Driftwood again! The only thing we suggest for the Driftwood team is a hammock out back, maybe on the porch or hanging from a tree. 😊

Beautiful home!
We had a wonderful time at Driftwood. Margaret was attentive and very helpful. The house itself is lovely... plenty of room for my family of five, well appointed kitchen, and room to spread out. We especially enjoyed the back porch. We were out there almost every morning and evening. The neighborhood is quiet and conveniently located. The kids enjoyed the yard and the quick walk to the beach. I would recommend this house to friends visiting Barbados - it was perfect!

Wonderful experience!
Twenty plus years ago we spent a week in Barbados with our young daughters and have always wanted to return. Driftwood proved to be a perfect place for our family vacation: our two now-grown daughters and their guys had plenty of space, and, like others, we found the veranda overlooking the garden to be a perfect gathering spot. We rented two Mokes from Stoutes to share among the three couples, giving us the opportunity to get lost separately exploring the island but allowing us to meet up at designated spots for lunch, etc. And, of course, the proximity to Miami Beach was awesome; one son in law also caught some waves at Freights Bay at the end of the road. The house is wonderful, with lots of space, and Margaret the manager is always just a phone call away. The location allows you to explore the whole island easily, but also places you in nearby proximity to grocery stores, restaurants and, of course, the famous Oistins Friday Fish Fry. One caveat: a car, or preferably a Moke, will always help you maximize your experience and allow you to visit the more remote beaches such as Bottom Bay, and sights such as the north end of the island, or St Nicolas Abbey or Bathsheba. Plus, they’re a blast to drive, if a bit unnerving at times. All in all, a great experience!

The Complete Package!
Everything you need for a great vacation. There was just the two of us so we had more than enough space in this three bedroom home. It is nice to have two full bathrooms. We especially loved the veranda and spent most of our time outside. The garden is beautiful with yet another seating area for six people. The neighbourhood is very quiet and we felt very safe. Wouldn’t hesitate to book this home again! Many thanks to Dagny, Margaret, Nowell and the ladies for making our stay so special!

Driftwood requires a renovation
The property description is deceptive: Downstairs bathroom lacks hot water in shower . Both bathrooms have dirt and could use a upgrade. The kitchen appliances are outdated. Fridge rusted. Cook top glass cracked. Pots and Pans should be discarded and replaced with newer utensils. Carpets were stained .Den smelt mouldy and roof in back bedroom leaked.

Lovely cottage style property within walking distance of Miami Beach and Oistins eateries
Great location within walking distance of all local amenities. Especially fabulous on Oistins fish fry Fridays when walking trumps all forms of transport. Spent most of our time on the rear veranda where you can watch early morning monkeys eat the bananas you have left out for them.

A little Gem in Paradise!
We stayed for 11 nights in November 2017 with my boyfriend and his parents. Everything was perfect. The house is even better than in the pictures! it's a typical bajan house in wood very well maintained, spacious, clean and decorated. A master en suite room upstairs and 2 other bedrooms downstairs very comfortable. We spent a lot of time on the terrace and in the garden, it's a real plus! We didn't need AC at all as there are ceiling fan in each room and mosquitos net on all the windows. The location is 100m from freight bay (where it's perfect to practice sup or learn surf) and 10min walk to south point (for more experienced surfer) and Miami beach (beautiful beach for swimming). The location is quiet, very safe and close to everything (in Oistins). Margaret, the house manager, is a super nice lady who lives very close by and is available for anything. As we stayed for 11 days she sent the cleaning lady after 5 days to clean and change bed sheets and towels which was very appreciated! Thank you very much for making our stay unforgettable !! About the host

Hosted by Dagny Louise Bain

Host profile image
I am originally from Barbados but have lived for many years in Portugal with my husband. We have four sons who also love returning to Barbados to surf and swim (100 mts down the road!) and spend time relaxing with friends and family. We like helping to make our visitors feel comfortable and enjoy being at home and to make sure they have everything they need for a fabulous holiday. We take great pride in making sure that Driftwood is properly equipped and well managed so that our guests have a fabulous, stress free beach holiday and want to return over and over again.

Why they chose this property

Driftwood house is in a lovely unspoilt part of Barbados, close to the sea but in a quiet and safe residential area on the South coast. Dagny (wife and mother) grew up in Barbados and knows the island well - searching for the right property took some time but we knew as soon as we saw the house it was exactly what we were looking for - big enough for visiting members of family yet cosy enough as a romantic getaway for couples. Its close enough to the beach for children to walk there by themselves and the surfing spot at the bottom of the road in Freights bay keeps teenagers and young people happy for many hours.

What makes this property unique

A visiting family of monkeys comes for breakfast early most mornings, they sit on the stepping stones in the garden under the mango tree, to eat the bananas that hopefully you´ve left for them the night before. The house is just 100yds from the sea where you can feed turtles in the late afternoon and a short walk into Oistins town for dinner alongside the beautiful turquoise blue Caribbean sea.
