An Autumn Leaves Break from the Pandemic

Stephanie, Brian, and LOUISA were the best part of this rental, especially Louisa who actually made an extra trip to help us get the fire started on our first night in the farmhouse. We are, after all, city slickers. The accommodations are rustic, not luxurious, but very comfortable. The setting idyllic.

This Farm made me fall in Love with Vermont

When you choose a non-traditional vacation home through a third party site like VRBO and the like, you never know exactly what might come of it. You can't be sure about the validity of photos, hosts both honoring their commitments and leaving you to roam about on your own without being chaperoned.  That being said, "Vacation in the Green Mountains," was above and beyond what anyone could imagine. The property is capital G Gorgeous. Within minutes of arriving we were greeted with an immaculate sunset that seemed to last for hours. The animals on the property Buster and Bright (Oxen) and the Sheep Flock, greet you with a Moo, a Neigh and a visit every time you come outside or return back to the property. Stephanie and Brain granted complete privacy during our stay, but were reachable and would visit if we needed supplies. The didn't violate our privacy or make themselves a part of our trip in any way. I can't speak highly enough about this experience. My Partner and I got exactly what we needed from this trip and vacation. Our only complaint was having to leave at all. Nights were fire side chats with star gazing and Oxen companionship, mornings were a mixture of dew baths, gentle rains, or autumn greetings from fall foliage and sun-locked beauty. This is a HUGE FIND. I worry that writing the truth of this review will make it harder to re-book. But they deserve it.

Like a Dream

It's a very beautiful old farmhouse - rustic and comfortable. It's situated on a large beautiful stretch of property with a lovely daily walk. We had the company of the two oxen, Buster and Bright, and a flock of sheep with very marked personalities. We bonded with all. Nearby are several amazing lakes. I'm a long-distance swimmer, and it was really liberating being almost alone in these pristine settings with the loons shadowing my movements. The hosts were always responsive whenever we had issues. The time flew by in a flash. It's just a gorgeous, natural spot in Vermont. Our only complaint was that the road had a fair amount of travel on it, with some big trucks rattling by.

A wonderful getaway in rural Vermont

This was our third stay at the farm house in Goshen. We keep coming back for a reason: this place is heaven. The property is a beautiful old farmhouse that has been well restored. It is comfortable and has all of the niceties of modern life (good kitchen, excellent water pressure, etc.), with one big exception: no cell service. For us, this was a delight, but I imagine that some guests might not appreciate the lack of connectivity with the outside world. We keep coming back because staying here allows us to really unplug. The farmhouse is situated on a big property: there is a barn, several paddocks (housing sheep!), an old orchard, and woods. The house is near several great hikes and places to swim. It's an easy drive to nearby towns, but they are not *too* close.

Idyllic Farmhouse setting in the Green Mountains.

We loved our stay at the Carlisle Hill Farmhouse. The house was everything we could have asked for. The country setting was perfect. We loved starting our mornings with coffee on the porch and finishing the day with a glass of wine, from one of the local wineries, on the porch. The house was very comfortable and well equipped and we lacked nothing. The property was beautiful. The days were so peaceful, relaxing and private that our stay seemed to last forever. There was so much to do in the area. Every day we went out on the road for day trips. We loved the mountain scenery, the small villages and the beautiful rivers and streams that ran along every roadway through the mountains. We stopped at the US Forest Service blueberry field and to our delight found that the blueberries were starting to ripen. It is truly a wonderful spot. Everything we needed for supplies was easy to find in Brandon. Absolutely loved Cafe Provence restaurant. Has Sunday brunch and two dinners there - quite good. We would definitely stay at this home again and would recommend it to anyone who loves the outdoors and peace and quiet. Our heart felt thanks to our hosts Stephanie and Brian - we loved your farmhouse. Carl and Mary

We'll be back!

This was our second visit to this delightful farmhouse. It is so serene! Great hiking is close by. We had a sunny, cool week. It was great. The house is very comfortable. The kitchen and full bath are new. The bed was great, I slept like a baby. We'll be back.

The Heart of the Country

This is the second time we've stayed on the farm. It's a dream come true: relaxing, quiet, perfect for thought--situated in the radiant hills of Vermont, seven sheep to keep us company. The hosts left the place completely equipped in all aspects. Lovely. Couldn't ask for anything more.

Beautiful Property for a Peaceful Getaway!

We had an amazing summer at the farm surrounded by the beauty of Vermont—friendly sheep for neighbors, beautiful mountain views, hiking and walking trails, and fresh blueberries at the state blueberry management area (which is just down the road)—what more could you ask for?!! The peace and quiet was just what we needed, and we were still close enough to Brandon and Middlebury to still take advantage of all they had to offer. Stephanie and Brian were the perfect hosts—available when/if we needed them, but otherwise left us to our own devices. We spent 6 full weeks here and were still sad to say goodbye when we left! Such a special spot; we’ll definitely be back!

Lovely, Lyrical

The farm is like a painting of the Vermont hills. Surrounding the house is private pasture where seven serene sheep spend the day grazing. The hosts are affable, welcoming, and generous. The house is warm, welcoming, and well-supplied with whatever you'd need. Two thumbs up!

Amazing week at the Carlisle hill farmhouse

We stayed at the farmhouse for a week in July, and everything about the stay was amazing. We picked blueberries down the road in the Blueberry Management area, went swimming and kayaking at Lake Dunmore, and hiked out to Silver Lake. On the one rainy morning, we sat on the porch and drank tea while reading. It was perfect! We also loved trying restaurants in Brandon and Middlebury, and every morning and evening we took a walk around the property to say hello to the sheep. We love Vermont!

Scenic views

We enjoyed everything about our stay at the Carlisle hill farmhouse. The house itself was comfortable and loaded with character. The grounds offered a trail for walking, visiting the sheep and beautiful views. The porch was a great spot for reading and just hanging out. We hiked to Silver Lake and did the Robert Frost trail, we visited a couple local breweries, the farmers market in Brandon, as well as a great French bakery and some interesting shops in downtown Brandon. Great location!

Gloriously peaceful farmhouse on a quiet road in the Green mountains: perfect respite from city life

We stayed at the farmhouse the week of July 4, 2016. It was wonderful. The house had all the amenities necessary for a week-long vacation away from hustle and bustle. The owners are gracious and helpful without being obtrusive. If we can get free, we'll be back next summer. Five stars if you're looking for a peaceful, rustic home where you can soak in the quiet and the nature. Any downsides are common to all farmhouses: if you want luxury--heated floors in the bathroom and turn-down service--stay at a hotel. We'll come back here, though. 1. The house: the house is an updated farmhouse that has been renovated to ensure comfort. The kitchen comes complete with full-size fridge, oven and stove with electric range, dishwasher, and all the cookware, flatware and utensils you could need. We shopped at a local farmer's market (recommended by the owners) and then cooked every night at the house. When the weather cooperated, we cooked outside on the grill. The property has a couple of different fire-pits for those inclined to hot dogs and smores one evening. We played games in the living room at night (though the couch is also well-appointed for napping) in front of a wood-burning stove. One bedroom downstairs (with full bath) and two bedrooms upstairs (with half-bath) and a day bed. The house could comfortably sleep six or more. (Though note: the walls and floorboards are slightly thin, and one bedroom is directly above the other). 2. The property: the owners keep a flock of sheep and half of the property is dedicated to a couple of fields (paddocks? pastures? who knows) for them. The fields are ringed with an electric fence to keep predators out, so you can walk past the sheep in the morning, but you can't walk up to them. Beyond the sheep fields, the property extends back through an old apple orchard and up a hillside into a maple grove. Climbing the hill at sunrise and sunset gives a glorious view of the surrounding hills and mountains. The sheep come out to greet you when you walk past their pasture. 3. The nearby amenities: the owners left us a great map of the nearby hiking and swimming options. Using that map, we hiked into Silver Lake, and we drove to one of the other lakes. We spent a day hiking the Long Trail from the nearest intersection. Brandon (quaint with a lovely cafe for pastries) and Middlebury are close by. We were enchanted with this place and happily recommend it to you.

Excellent stay in a beautiful place

The farmhouse is a wonderful vacation home. It is fully equipped, comfortable and cozy. The views are amazing and hiking nearby was exactly what we wanted. The location is close to the towns of Brandon and Middlebury for groceries, restaurants, and shopping in small stores but far enough away to feel like you are really "away from it all." Stephanie and Brian have made this farmhouse into a vacation destination all on its own. We'll definitely be back.

Perfect getaway

This is a perfect getaway from everything. Very quiet and relaxing. The owners Brian and Stephanie were very nice hosts greeting us with fresh garden vegetables. The wood stove was great! My wife I enjoyed snuggling up on the couch in front of it. The house is perfectly located right next to many hiking trails and close to the town of Brandon where there are many quaint little shops. We enjoyed a wonderful anniversary dinner at Café Provence downtown and recommend it highly.

Rustic beauty

I spent four days here with my family and we all had a wonderful time. We hiked the trails on the property and enjoyed the old orchard, sheep pasture, and beautiful views. Nearby, we went swimming and loon-watching in Silver Lake (one of the most beautiful destinations anywhere), picked blueberries for hours, and generally explored the woods and felt like a kid again. The burbling stream by the house and the wood-stove made for very peaceful evenings. Would definitely stay here again.

Classic Vermont

My family of five spent five delightful days at Carlisle Farmhouse in October. The farmhouse is very tidy and cozy with comfortable tasteful furnishings and a woodstove that kept the autumn chill away. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated and spacious and the well equipped kitchen seemed brand new and was large enough for us to cook some wonderful meals using produce from the local farmers markets. The views from the field behind the house are to die for. We had many of our meals up at the picnic table admiring the mountains and the beautiful fall colors. The owner flock of sheep added to the country ambiance. The Middlebury-Brandon area has so many outdoor offerings from hiking, cycling, paddling to farmers markets that we couldn't fit them all in during our stay! We cycled from the front door of the house on quiet dirt roads and went canoeing on some of the local ponds. We also had excellent meals at the local restaurants: Cafe Provence in Brandon and the Storm Cafe and American Flatbread in Middlebury. We will be back!

We have lived in Brandon for over 25 years and love this area of Vermont and all it has to offer. We use the farmhouse on weekends, it is only a short distance away from our home. Our business is Visual Learning Systems, where we produce educational science videos and teacher's guides, etextbooks for K-12 classrooms and teachers. www.visuallearningsys.com Stephanie is a former state legislator and Brian restores and renovates local homes.

Why they chose this property

We purchased this hilltop farm as a weekend getaway, and for the beautiful pastures where our sheep grazed during the spring, summer and fall. Our team of oxen live here year round. We harvest the wild apple trees - and every fall we make cider from the delicious, tart apples. In the spring, we tap the maple trees and make enough syrup for our family and friends. The views are magnificent and we find much relaxation in our mountain home.

What makes this property unique

The property is one of the few remaining farms with open fields in Goshen. The land is situated next to the Green Mountain National Forest which provides endless possibilities of outdoor recreation, including biking, xc skiing, hiking, swimming, boating, birding and fishing. Many of our guests are writers, and find the location a wonderful place to work and vacation. The farmhouse is just a short drive from Middlebury College's Bread Loaf School of English in Ripton and is conveniently located between the thriving villages of Brandon and Middlebury.
