About this property

I'm Open, Base Camp Adventure Lodge, King bed

This is a lodge. There are four rooms. Two on the north side and two on the south. They each have their own entrance from the outside, own bathroom, microwave, and mini fridge. Common areas are kitchen, dining room, and living room but since Covid most people cook on the grills outside and each at multiple outdoor locations. Room has a king bed. Can add a roll a way but it's tight.

It's almost unbelievable. The river and beach are about a five minute walk out your door. Kayaks at the river. Three doubles and six singles. Side by sides, take you to the Wind Caves and Chicken Corner. Three to four hours for $195. There are unlimited hikes from the property and many more near by.

There is so much wildlife it's hard to keep track of. In addition to the hundred or so birds, squirrels, and chipmunks that come to eat each day, there's the man himself, Kobae. Kobae is the 185 pound security tortoise that lives here and when he's not hanging out on the porch, or chowing down on romaine, he'll be looking for someone to go hiking with. With evening the front porch comes alive. Ringtail, skunk, fox, and raccoon all eat nightly either on or just off the front porch. You're welcome to hang out at the fire pit or sit in gravity chairs and view the night sky but many a guest has spent their evening watching all the critters that come to the porch. For kids especially it's an incredible experience.

The night sky, the incredible views, the critters, the side by sides, the beach, the river, kayaking, Wind Caves, hiking, all here. Nobody else has what Base Camp has or even comes close. Worry about other parts of your trip but don’t worry about this part. I live here pretty much 24/7/365 and I’ve been sharing it with guests for fifteen years. You want an adventure, not just staying somewhere, you’ve found it.

Now, having said all that, it’s quiet, off the grid, and you want to get away, that’s here too. Some folks just sit on the porch and unwind, enjoying the landscape, watching the rafts and kayaks come down the river or finding a spot around the property to just sit and read. There’s no shortage of those spots. I’ve spent many a morning hiking out to a different place each day and reading.

Whatever you want to do, all you have to do is walk out the door. That’s special.

See you soon,

Tom

Mom and Son trip
We had a wonderful time at Basecamp. The property is exactly as described and everyone was kind and welcoming. As a single mom, travel can sometimes be intimidating, but Tom and his family were great, showed us around, offered suggestions on places to visit while we were there. I was nervous about the drive out to the property, but even though the road was rough, it’s was easy enough! I wouldn’t let that stop you from choosing to stay here. We also rented the side by side, which is a must do!

True Gem
Base Camp has all you need as far as accommodations but the charm and remote location offer so much more. Whether you are a hiker, have ATVs, kayaker or fan of disc golf, this place has it all. Tom and Teresa are fun to visit with and you’ll be amazed by their African Tortoise. The drive back in is part of the adventure and a 4 wheel drive vehicle is helpful.

If i could give it more than 5 stars i would. The drive there is breathtaking. Its part of the adventure. Its remote in moab so you know its going to be crazy. My TRD pro 4runner handled it like a pro. When you get there, theres amazing views all around. Very cute room's with comfy beds. Tom was a great host. We will definitely be back.

Awesome place, unique experience
Thank you Tom for creating such a unique place and sharing it with others. We had a great time, mostly just relaxing since we had been wheeling and doing activities for about a week before arriving so we needed a nice peaceful break. Great place to clear the brain. Views are beautiful, the animal feedings were amazing – the night animals as well as for Kobae the tortoise and the opportunistic fly eating lizard. Hanging out on the back porch was great. Theresa was always helpful and kind. And of course, Tom’s stories are legendary. Thanks Tom and Theresa and Thomas.

The True Moab Experience
This place was absolutely magic! A knarly drive to get there but as long as your car is over 6/7 Inches off the ground and you follow Tom's instructions - you will be absolutely fine despite what anyone says to you. So so so worth it. Magical spot at the heart of Moab.

Great spot to get off the grid
Tom and the team are great hosts. The lodge is remote but has all the amenities needed for a fun and comfortable stay. If you love animals and critters, this place will not disappoint. The stars are night are like none you see if you live in the city or suburbs - millions of little diamonds on an black velvet sky. We will be back soon!

Off the Grid Adventure
Get ready for a bumpy ride to the lodge, but once you arrive, it will be smooth sailing from there. We loved our time hiking, riding the side by side to the wind caves and Chicken Corner, grilling out, stargazing, and meeting Tom along with his two best pals—Kobae the tortoise and Jax the dog. We stayed for 2 nights and adjusted our Moab plans slightly so we only had to make the trip in and out of the lodge once in our Highlander rather than twice. But there was plenty to do on the property to pack a full day of fun!

Awesome property, 'cept for the drive
Enjoyed the quiet solitude. Loved enjoying nature and the open skies. The drive in and out is one I don't want to do again. Glad for the experience but don't want to every drive Hurrah pass again! Tom was a great story teller and a regular saint - rescuing people and helping out anyone in need. Really enjoyed him. Thanks Theresa and Tom and Jake and lil Jake (Jesse). You guys are awesome!

Breathtaking, incredible, awe-inspiring property!
Wow. I cannot say enough good thing about Tom's property. We were absolutely blown away by the views, the scenery, the raccoons (haha)! The night sky is absolutely unrivaled and the hikes around the area are absolutely incredible. We couldn't believe our luck! In addition to the absolutely breathtaking views, the rooms are so comfortable. You're staying at an adventure lodge, so you might be "roughing it", but it'll be the best night of sleep you've ever had at a lodge. One note, if you've made it this far in the review...*PLEASE NOTE: We would suggest a Jeep Wrangler, 4 Runner, or pickup truck to get out there. We had a mid-size SUV and we were pretty anxious at times picking our way along the Hurrah Pass. We would have been MUCH more comfortable making that drive in an all-terrain vehicle.

Great Stay but VERY hard to get to
We did not realize just how bad the road was to get to this VRBO. We were told we needed 8 inches of clearance so we thought it was going to be bumpy but it turned out not to be a road at all. We got in late so it was pretty dark and it made the drive from Moab to the VRBO take over two hours. I would not recommend anyone getting in after night fall. Also if you don't feel comfortable driving along cliffsides on roads that hardly can be considered roads, it's probably best to avoid this place altogether. If you do think you have a car that can handle that type of terrain, the place is absolutely incredible. We could see the milkyway. Also of the animal feeding is a ton of fun. The whole area is just a lot of fun to explore too.

Absolutely Amazing and One-of-a-Kind Experience!
The pass coming in can be a bit scary, so be prepared for the drive. It is remote and very rocky. We made it in our 2014 Chevy Equinox (6.8in of ground clearance) but it was cutting it close. Just take your time so that you do not damage your vehicle. I would not make the drive in anything less than a decent SUV. However, the drive is absolutely gorgeous! You are getting to see something that not a lot of people do. This is a step above your average Moab vacation! And the owner sent up his grandson to meet us on the pass and make sure we were doing okay, which was extremely considerate and kind. It is absolutely worth it! The lodge itself is quaint and cute. It has a very cozy and homey feel. The rooms are nothing special, but they fit the desert environment and its not like you're going to be spending all your time in them anyway. As part of your stay you have access to kayaks. It is ABSOLUTELY worth renting the side by sides and following the map that Tom gives you. The wind caves were so fun to explore and the views are incredible. Tom makes himself available to help you with whatever you need and was very accommodating. The wildlife feedings at night, Kobai the tortoise and Jacks the dog were such a great part of the experience. Tom is a great guy with an awesome sense of humor. I adored his knowledge and love for the animals and how he takes care of them. He drove our car out at the end like a pro which we appreciated so much. We absolutely plan on coming back!

Other Worldly
We had a blast staying with Tom at Base Camp. Are you someone who prefers adventure off the beaten path? Maybe a little remote? Maybe a little other worldly? If legit off roading, exploring and hiking for days, wild life and gorgeous views are your thing? Base Camp is for you. Want all the amenities of a standard hotel where you will sleep soundly in your cool bed? Still wanna pack in your food, sit beneath the stars and hear only the night speaking to you from the distance? Yep, Base Camp is for you. It was an incredibly unique VRBO experience. Tom and his team are amazing, incredibly accommodating and detail oriented when sending you off on whatever adventure you’ve chosen for the day. The road to get to Base Camp is no joke, but absolutely doable if your smart about your driving, patient and don’t get wigged out easily. Clearance is helpful. Add Base Camp to your list. Make sure you bring enough water, mosquito spray and a hat or two. Pack your food in, bring your favorites and oh my word, if you’re a disc golf person, this will be one of your top trips - yes, in your lifetime. Wanna explore in the side by sides? Bring cash or check and don’t think twice about whether to rent these guys or not. It’s a yes. It’s a fraction of the cost from what you’d pay anywhere else. And really, you couldn’t pay enough for these views. And the wild life? I didn’t even mention Kobea yet. I’ll save some mystery for your trip. Tom has created quite a place. Go.

Great destination and plenty of adventure or relaxation while you are there. Someone or the owner Tom is always available for advice depending on your preferences.I would describe the accommodations as a hostel with private rooms and ample, well stocked common areas. The antics of the somewhat tamed wildlife were delightful!.

The rooms were not very clean but the beds were surprisingly comfortable and the sheets were clean. The road in to the place is quite the adventure, pay attention and you'll be alright. My Favorite Place
If you want to get away from the rest of the busy world, then this is the place for you! My favorite moments were chatting with Tom, meeting Kobae the tortoise, watching Tom feeding all the animals at night, looking at the perfect night skies, going to the Land of the Skinny People, climbing Jacob’s Ladder, and discovering the Wind Caves. Going on hikes all by yourself and hearing absolutely no sounds is the most perfect experience. Oh and I enjoyed a game of frisbee golf on the place which I need a lot of practice.

This will be an experience my husband and I will always remember. The staff are very hospitable ensuring our stay is memorable. The amenities we took full advantage of. The kayak along the Colorado river and the side by side into both Jackson hole canyon and chicken corner. The room met all necessities and was very clean. Just a nice guy that knows who he is and where he's suppose to be.

Why they chose this property

I was president and founder for 25 years of a large indoor soccer company. The managers worked really hard. We all did. I wanted to find a place to get away, where we could escape from the grind. I wanted something in the boonies. Driving to our Boise facility I saw people walk out of their homes, get in their canoes, and get in the Snake River. I need a river. Driving through West Texas coming back from our Houston and Austin facilities I saw folks walk out of their homes and get on their dirt bikes and on their atvs and take off down dirt trails. I need dirt trails.

Sometimes I would find a property that had some things, but not all things. Sometimes I’d find something new and the hunt would then grow more difficult with more requirements. Then, years later I hit the wall. I was done with 100 hour weeks and I needed an escape. I escalated my hunt for a property in the boonies. I started focusing on the four corners area central to most of our locations.

After looking at 50 or so properties one day my Moab real estate agent told me about a property on the other side of Hurrah Pass. I tried to get out here to view it in the BMW but in those days the road was rough and I tore the BMW all up.

Turns out Base Camp has everything and so much more. I bought this place fifteen years ago without knowing about the Wind Caves, Chicken Corner, Anti-Cline, Amasa Back, pottery sherds, arrowhead flakes, ancient dwellings, rock art, the critters of all kinds, dino tracks, fossils, all types of geology, the night sky, the quiet, the unlimited hikes and on and on. There has never been a day I haven’t appreciated what surrounds me. There never will be.

What makes this property unique

Things to know:

You should bring your own food and anything you’d like to drink besides water. Pretty much everything else is here. It’s 17 miles from Moab and it will take most a little over an hour. Take the road between the side by side rental place and McDonalds. At stop sign go straight. River on right. Black top ends. Follow signs that say Hurrah Pass. You don't normally need four wheel drive but you should have at least six inches of ground clearance. Without it your vehicle and Mother Earth may have occasional inappropriate relationships. If height is an issue you will have lots of issues up and down Hurrah Pass. We are 2.7 miles down Hurrah. Turn right at Base Camp sign and the first left will take you to the lodge.

Things are not static. They don’t stay the same all the time. The road changes, a rock falls down, there is a rain storm, anything can change the road. It may be fine in the morning and deteriorate in the afternoon, for multiple reasons. I mention the beach, but sometimes I don’t have one during snow melt and slightly after and the locations of the beach could change. In June and early July generally we have mosquitoes but hardly got any this year depending on the high water mark. We have a Milky Way most nights but in December and January it’s more difficult to see than in mid summer. I have side by sides for guests to use but sometimes they break and go in the shop at the same time so I might not have one while you are here. I feed critters at night on the front porch of the lodge. Some nights some critters don’t come or they take a long time to come. I have no control over who shows up when. Kobae usually hangs out on the porch in March, April, May, and early June. Once it gets hot he retreats in his hole and I generally only see him once a day when he comes out to eat until end of August and then he’ll want to go hiking every day, for miles. He’s not here from mid November thru late February when he goes to San Diego for the winter.
