About this property

Off-Grid Solar Country House with Natural Pool & Sauna in Mindo Countryside

Location: Mindo, Ecuador, South America (3 hours from Quito airport). We are nestled in the mountainous countryside of the Mindo-Nambillo cloud forest, at a leisurely 30 minute walk past the town of Mindo (towards the butterfly farm), and a 10 minute walk before the butterfly farm (Mariposario).

Accommodations: Eco-friendly house off the electrical grid, with solar panels. 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, sleeps up to 7.

For a smaller accommodation, check out our country cottage which is located on the property of Posada La Lomita as well, at: vrbo 694350

Posada La Lomita offers an eco-friendly country house in the outskirts of Mindo, functioning off the electrical grid, and relying on solar panels for electricity and a local waterfall/mountain spring for water. We practice energy conservation, and are conscientious of not utilizing high voltage consuming products as well as turning off the lights and electrical appliances when not in use. This practice not only emphasizes the importance of energy conservation within all of our cultural visits, but it also allows us the opportunity to remind and reinforce resource conservation to our children, fellow guests and future generations.

Our home is custom built and constructed entirely of wood. Views are possible in every location throughout the house, and the scenery and nature is breathtaking and awe inspiring of the Mindo-Nambillo cloud forest & forest reserve.

For the family or couple who enjoys nature, and the uncontaminated, pure environment that the Mindo countryside has to offer--and for those who are still looking for the luxury comforts of a home--this is the perfect getaway for some peace and quiet, filled only with the sounds of birds, insects and running water.

Here at Posada La Lomita, we sit on 3 hectares (7.5 acres) of nature filled land, with trees, fields, creeks, birds, armadillos, guatusas, and other abundant wildlife all around us. Outdoor, on-site athletic activities include badminton, soccer, croquet, nature walks, and playing/wading in the creek or swimming in our natural, chemical free pool.

There is nothing more relaxing, gratifying, and peaceful, then to have your own private haven amidst the birds and animals chirping and moseying outside. You can discreetly watch them through the limitless windows, or from the hammocks of our outdoor lookout! Come enjoy your family meals, relaxing reads, and gatherings with your loved ones in your own private paradise!

We are completely secluded and offer privacy from the bustle and noise in the town of Mindo. Other small cottages are located on the property as well, making Posada La Lomita an excellent location for larger group gatherings in your own private hacienda. Due to the presence of other cabaƱas, other tourists might also be on the property, yet privacy is not an issue, as space is abundant.

The owners are bilingual in English and Spanish and we raise our two children bilingually as well. The house and property are child and eco-friendly, using only non-toxic products, and offering entertainment for children such as games and movies (in English and Spanish), plus badminton, soccer, croquet, and free range chickens to feed and collect eggs from.

The light colored wood construction blends in naturally with the forested mountainous environment, emphasizing the oneness with your surroundings. Our water source comes from natural water spring & waterfall in the mountains above, thus supplying filtered (yet untreated) chemical and pollutant free water for the house.

Though daytime can reach the 80's F, nighttime tends to be cool, for which one controls the temperature by simply closing the windows and using extra, supplied blankets if needed.

The kitchen is built with socialization in mind, fostering openness to the dining and living area, thus making mealtime sociable and family friendly events.

The living area is surrounded on 3 sides with floor to ceiling windows and screens, permitting a 270 degree view of the wildlife and forest scenery below. You can enjoy these views in the comfort of your own hammock, bean bag, or typical colonial chair.

Nighttime at Posada La Lomita resembles a starry sky, except instead of stars, you will notice that they are lightning bugs, illuminating the darkness! Sometimes it's as if you were in your own private galaxy, surrounded by twinkling stars (flashing fireflies) as you walk the property in the dark. Paths are also automatically illuminated with solar lamps that turn on at dusk.

The owners live on the property as well, yet we are at a comfortable, private distance from the house, and are available to assist with any of your needs or arrange them entirely for you. Advance notice is kindly appreciated, however.

As experienced travelers ourselves--and having our own small children--we realize that one's own accommodations and necessities might be unique from the next. We are more than flexible and happy to fulfill your desires; just tell us what it is you require, and we will present you with the best package and offer to ensure you have the most wonderful, at ease, and memorable vacation while here in Mindo and Ecuador!

Mindo Off Grid
We really enjoyed the our stay at La Lomita. We wanted to escape the downtown and experience the lush area. This location gave us exactly that feel of being away from everything else and yet we were only minutes from the many activities that drew us to Mindo. We were intrigued by the off-grid solar and we had everything we needed for an enjoyable 4 days.

Beautiful destination just outside of Mindo
When you rent this solar-powered house, you also have access to many other amenities. On this property, there is a non heated clean pool, sauna, community room building, yoga and workout space, gazebo with a few hummingbird feeders, other small cabanas available for a small group and a wonderful property owner who attends to your needs. He helped us make a few calls for reservations, provided laundry service, and brought their dogs over for some furry baby time. The only drawback to this VRBO is the distance and road from downtown Mindo. After driving all around NW Ecuador, the road to the house is on par with other remote reserves. However, if you are looking for an easy drive in, this will not fit your expectations. This location is perfect for a large gathering that want to stay on property. Love this place!

This was the highlight of our 3 weeks in Ecuador. Even if you don't need all 4 bedrooms it is so reasonable it is still a great deal. WITH breakfast. We were spoiled by this place. Even nicer than pictures show. Super clean. Great to just relax. Easy to get a taxi to explore. Loved going to see the hummingbirds and butterflies. Instead of chocolate factory hosts set us up with a hands on experience of making chocolate. Marjorie & Nano treated us like family from when we were planning the trip (so helpful) even to after we left helping us with lost item. They will give you your space. Or be there if you need them...or want them. We had a blast our last night playing music and singing together.

Most unbelievable time in Mindo
There have already been so many great things said about this place and we agree with all of them. Nano and Marjorie use their gift of hospitality to the fullest. Thier love, joy and vision for this property shines through when they take the time to show you the entire grounds, including the pool area. Although bird watching was not on our schedule you can't help but get into watching all the different kinds of birds right from the hammocks on the property. Nano set up a wonderful chocolate tour with a friend of theirs. We actually made the chocolate from the cacoa bean to a delicious fondue in the end. That was a great experience. Each morning Nano and Marjorie fixed a delicious spread for breakfast. It couldn't have been better. They were available when you need them whether it was needing a taxi or recommending a restaurant. We walked to town a couple times. Also walked to the butterfly sanctuary. Don't miss this! The worst thing about this place is that we had to leave. I would recommend this property to anyone. Don't let living off the grid scare you, embrace it!!!

Even better than advertised!
La Lomita was everything we were hoping for, and more. An absolutely beautiful property with so many great features, super clean and stunningly maintained. Communication was excellent, and the kind owners even helped me with scheduling complications due to the pandemic. We originally planned to go in the spring of 2020, but were delayed until now. And boy, was it worth the wait. Really, everything was just great, and the location made it easy to do what we wanted to do, as well as being a little bit more isolated from the town for peace and privacy. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend La Lomita to anyone I know. Thanks again, this was the foundation of the trip of a lifetime.

An absolute gem! The house and the entire property is stunning and it was a perfect weekend for the family. Fernando was super easy to communicate with and Luis the on property contact was helpful and also quick to assist with anything we needed. The only issue I had was our stay was too short. We canā€™t wait to return!

Amazing getaway!
An incredible oasis minutes outside town! The house was immaculate and exactly what weā€™d hoped for - the sunroom with hammocks and beautiful views were a favourite place to unwind and watch the wildlife - birds, bunnies, chickens, even a capybara! The kids enjoyed seeing the 2 house dogs daily. The grounds were amazing, and so well kept. We enjoyed the pool and sauna after days adventuring in Mindo. Nando and Luis were so helpful and friendly, making our stay perfect. Nando arranged travel from Quito for our family of 7 and assistance in organizing activities for our family of 5 teens was much appreciated! Our only complaint was that we didnā€™t have more time to spend here. 5 stars!!

Serene visit to paradise!
The owners, Nano and Marjorie, created a beautiful and unique property located in relative seclusion but close enough to town to walk (20 to 30 minutes). We stayed in the 3 bedroom, 2 bath eco house for only two nights and I wish our stay was longer. The house is roomy and comfortable. The sun room has ample windows that overlook a lush, tropical landscape, perfect for viewing birds and wildlife from the comfort of home. A covered wooden bridge winds through a wonderland of gorgeous plants and leads you to a large spring fed pool and fountain. This secluded pool area has a changing room, bathroom and sauna. In another area of the lush, expansive yard, there is a gazebo covered with colorful hanging vines. This secluded site is visited regularly by several species of hummingbirds, and overlooks tropical forest and mountain areas making for a magical feel to this incredibly relaxing area. Several hammocks are available at the gazebo. There are numerous activities that can be arranged in the nearby town that range from strenuous activities like waterfall hikes, gondola rides, white water tubing, and zip lining to more sedate and relaxing activities like visiting the butterfly garden and chocolate making tour. I can't say enough about this special place and the two special people who own the property. Nano and Marjorie are readily available for any questions and/or assistance and are two of the nicest people you will be lucky enough to meet when visiting Ecuador.

Fantastic!
This property exceeded our expectations. Mindo is a beautiful area and staying in this environment-friendly house located away from the buzz of the town was just perfect. The place is clean, welcoming and impeccably maintained. We were very comfortable and were able to make our meals (if you plan to cook your meals, itā€™s a good idea to do some shopping in Quito before heading to Mindo). There are also lots of restaurants in the area so food is not a problem. The gazebo with numerous hammocks was the perfect place to rest and relax while enjoying nature! The pool was wonderful - beautiful surroundings and chemical free! The sauna was quite enjoyable as well. The owner, Fernando, provided us with a tour of the house when we arrived which was very useful. Fernando was a wonderful host and was always available and attentive to our needs. Mindo is a birderā€™s paradise and as birders ourselves we appreciated the fabulous birding opportunities right in the property as well as in the surrounding areas. An SUV is highly recommended for this area. Thanks Fernando for hosting our family! It was wonderful. We all also loved Penny - the friendliest dog weā€™ve met in Ecuador!

We loved it!
This property is an absolute paradise. The pictures can not truly depict how beautifully constructed the house is or how luxurious the grounds are. Marjorie and Nano were extremely gracious hosts and their property reflects how much love and care they put into all of the details. Both were so friendly and very helpful setting up tours. They also make a fantastic breakfast. The guided waterfall tour with Luis was a one of a kind adventure, not to be missed. I would highly recommend!!!

Ecuador/Mindo at its best
We stayed at La Lomita for just 18 days but we will keep it in mind as outstanding for the rest of our life. The whole property is created with detailed love but left naturally. There is a little sportsfield and a pool, a chill-out area with hammocks, lots of fantastic garden with many great plants (banana, papaya, cocoa, oranges, coffee and lots of other nice flowers). There are all kinds of birds around including Tucans and parrots. All is surrounded by rain forrest. We enjoyed walking to Mindo but you can do by Taxi as well. Lots of activities are nearby, or just enjoy the great nature. It is also a base for trips to Quito, the coast or other parts Ecuador. (You should take min 2 days for those trips). The house is absolutely well equipped with all you need. Very cosy, awesome views from all rooms to the property and surrounding rain Forrest. Hot showers and plenty of room for all of us. But one of the highlights of La Lomita is Nano, the owner. He is such a great guy. Always helpful with any kind of support but also a friend you just can talk with. Thanks Nano, for a unbelievable time we had at La Lomita. And very best regards to your family, especially Penny. Stefan, Gitta, Chris, Isa and Leon

Great week in Mindo...
We loved the house. We primarily visited Mindo during our Ecuador vacation to birdwatch. There were many new birds on the property, visible from the back room of the house. It was very peaceful and the breakfasts were delicious. Nano and Marjorie were delightful hosts.

Beautiful and peaceful place to stay!
There are many places to stay in Mindo but you would be missing out big time if you didn't stay here--it's the only place you should stay! This place is incredible! It is an absolutely breathtaking property and house. We were totally blown away--the house was even more amazing than the photos! The house and property are so peaceful and infused with love. It was spotless-extremely clean and they provided daily basic housekeeping (emptying trash and sweeping) which was very nice. Marjorie and Nano thought of every possible detail you can imagine in a house and went above and beyond to make our stay incredible. Here are just a few of the many details they thought of that made our stay special: - local coffee provided-a total bonus! - fully equipped kitchen with everything you can dream of-griddle for pancakes, blender, potato peeler, it was even stocked with some spices, sugar, and olive oil which we really appreciated. They provided all our water too. - a TV room with bean bags, games and more than enough DVDs. It was such a treat for my kids to get to watch a movie every night. They also played most of the games too! - shampoo, conditioner and soap in ever bathroom. - all windows were screened which was great as it meant we could leave them open at night for the breeze. We've stayed in a number of places without screens which means you can't leave the windows open. - homemade mosquito repellant made from natural oils. (Seriously-they actually made it! We were so impressed!) We can't say enough about how beautiful the house is. We wanted to live there! We also loved that the house was solar and off the grid. Every aspect of the house and their grounds has a low environmental impact, which we found really inspiring. They have done a beautiful job with everything on their grounds--there is a gorgeous spring fed pool, a gazebo with hammocks and a table and chairs for eating or writing and even a badminton net! My girls had fun with that too. They also offered us fresh eggs from their hens and three types of fresh lettuce from their garden. We loved it so much we wish we had stayed more than 3 days. It's easy to get to from town and not too far (we had a car but we walked to the butterfly farm and could have walked into town if our kids had been more up for it but it would be a longer walk to town.) Marjorie and Nano are also happy to help direct you to whatever activities in town you ask about. We relied on them to tell us how to get to the things

Felt like home...with an upgrade!
We had only two nights at Posada La Lomita and we all wish we had many more! The house, grounds, and views were all lovely and Marjorie and Nano immediately made us feel at home. We scheduled breakfast and dinner each day there and there are no words to really tell you how wonderful the meals were...sincerely, the best we had in Ecuador!! Fresh eggs from the chickens in the front yard, freshly harvested lemongrass for our tea, organic coffee, piles of delicious fruit, and even some caramel spread for the bread when we felt like indulging a bit :) The shower was hot and water pressure excellent, the hammocks in the sun room and the gazebo were superb, and the pool area was soooo serene. What else......we practiced yoga every morning and evening in the gazebo with the sounds of the cloud forest to accompany our breath. Nano took care of every request with abundant energy and even took time out of his day to take most of the group out to the waterfall. Waking up to the birds in the morning and falling asleep to frog concerts at night will never be forgotten. I will absolutely be back with future yoga groups and cannot wait!!!! Thank you Marjorie and Nano!

Fantastic cloud forest getaway for a family
We had a wonderful time staying in this beautiful house in the cloud forest. The house is well-stocked. The bedrooms were comfortable. The kitchen big enough to cook week for a large family. And the views of the surrounding grounds were lovely. Fernando and Margorie were extremely helpful throughout our stay. The grounds are perfect for kids, with interesting places to see, and good activities (like badminton and the spring-fed pool). It was really nice to be out of the town of Mindo, but within a 20 minute pretty walk.

This gem can't be beat!
My friends and I rented this pristine Mindo home for a holiday weekend. It surpassed our expectations. The grounds are gorgeous and carefully manicured and landscaped, the home itself is immaculate and cozy, and the breakfast that Marjorie and Fernando cooked us was delicious. I have always stayed in town when visiting Mindo, but the 30 minute walk was really quite lovely and the setting allowed the group a rejuvenating weekend. We're already planning our return!

The Perfect House
Our holidays was for a big family with young children, and the house was perfect for it, cause is big, very comfortable and has beautiful grounds for the kids to play potter and adventure around. The hosts were so helpful and very pleasant to be with. A wonderful experience to recommend to anyone going to Mindo!

Best of our dozen rentals we did in Ecuador
This Mindo house was the BEST rental location we experienced after spending over a month in Ecuador, and out of a dozen other rentals. A few things that should be emphasized: Hot water! Most rentals in Ecuador and most hotels and hostals say they have 'agua caliente' but most mean water that is not cold, and some even mean during specific hours. This house has very hot water, and lots of it, and even enough to comfortably take a bath in the lovely tile tub in the master bathroom. Quality house construction in the wilderness. You will find lots of fantastic wildlife outside and on the property with the creek on the property, birds and even watusi. If you go out at night with flashlights you can find some great insect life. Somehow, we never had any of those insects get in the house, despite the eco-wood construction and the fact that the house feels very much integrated with the outside and wildlife. The viewpoint 'Mirador'. This gazebo on the property had six hammocks. Even better, when we hung out there in the early morning or evening, we had no problem seeing 50 different types of birds and hearing even more. We saw many more birds from the mirador steps away from the house than we did over a week in the Amazonia. Hike to the waterfalls. A true highlight is when we were lucky enough to get a guided hike by Fernando to the nearest couple waterfalls. It was truly a jungle trek with beautiful flora and fauna and refreshing waterfalls. We were a little worried on our first drive out to the property as it is truly off the beaten path. You cross Mindo river and the rocky road even crosses a stream of water running over the 'road'. Only on later trips did we realize that the rough and creek-crossed rocky road is really just a half-hour walk to town, and about as good as other roads outside of Mindo. I didn't like the town of Mindo that much, but this property was really nice, large, clean and close to the butterfly farm and rock wall, waterfalls, and Fernando and Marjorie were very high service hosts.

Beautiful, peaceful house in Mindo
We absolutely loved staying here. Walking into the house was like breathing a sigh of relief. The house is solidly built, beautifully laid out, and very spacious. Everything was immaculate, the kitchen is well-stocked (with good coffee and sharp knives!), and the beds are comfortable with high quality sheets and towels. Marjorie brought us fresh fruit every morning and eggs from her chickens. Family members were available to drive us to and from town whenever we needed a lift (or it's a pleasant 25 minute walk), and even lent us their personal cellphones so we could reach them. They also took us to the waterfall near the property, and showed us local wildlife like the guatusas that come out in the mornings. We enjoyed being off the grid. Solar power is more than sufficient for lights and charging devices. It was no problem to use the generator when we needed to do laundry, and the wifi worked fine. We're traveling around Ecuador for 2.5 months, and this was the nicest place we've stayed. The kids played soccer, badminton, and ping pong, and hung out with Marjorie and Nano's kids. They also loved the extensive video collection. My husband and I loved reading in the hammocks on the screened in porch. We can't recommend this place highly enough. Thanks for the hospitality!

We're a tri-cultural family, having lived in Chile, Ecuador, and the United States. Since 1998 we have been in love with Mindo and its surrounding area, and in 2007 were able to start our dreams of raising our family here.

Our two children, ages 8 and 14, speak both English, Spanish, and Spanglish, and have the unique opportunity to adventure outside without worrying about cars or strangers, or take walks into town and enjoy the magnificent views, natural lifestyle, and slow pace of life.

Why they chose this property

Mindo is neither too hot, too cold, nor too humid--it is perfect. It is located about 5,000 -6,500 feet above sea level, and as such is above the Ecuadorian malarial zone. Its seasons are divided into rainy and dry, with half the year (approximately June to December) being the dry season, and the other half (December to June), the rainy one.

During that time it may rain all day, or just predominantly in the afternoon, leaving the mornings pleasant and sunny for outdoor activities. In this case, usually after such exercise, afternoon rains are a refreshing welcome, with the rhythmic sound calming you after a day of activities, or lulling you to sleep from so much fun.

Wildlife, in both flora and fauna, is abundant here, and unique to this small corner of the world. Mindo is also primarily known for outdoor and adventure activities, all of which are in close range to our property at Posada La Lomita. Contrary to many other parts of Ecuador and South America, you will notice that the Mindo community has an appreciation and understanding of the importance of the biodiversity of this region, and as such provides resources and support for its continued existence.

What makes this property unique

You will find perhaps other homes in Mindo, or lodges and cabins that offer your own private sleeping quarters, but what sets us apart is our closeness with nature, yet privacy and remoteness from the town, in which you can take advantage of the large house and expansive property for carrying on your own activities. We are self-sufficient and in control of our energy consumption; when Mindo is without electricity, we are not. Likewise, when Mindo is without water, we also are not. The house doesn't offer residence to multiple guests at once, but rather one family at a time--thus ensuring a complete private, family experience. We have no visible neighbors, yet we are just a hop, skip, and a jump away from town and all the much desired tourist activities. Depending on your mood and your longing for seclusion, you can all of it, none of it, or pick and choose your level of anonymity and socialization. Posada La Lomita is a paradise suitable for every kind of person, family, and personality!
