Villa Ma’Kai: Waterfront for Nature Lovers-Upscale-Golf Cart-Stunning Views!

Welcome to Villa Ma’Kai (Hawaiian for Villa Toward the Sea). Offering double master suites, this large Pelican Point duplex home is a popular vacation choice because of its privacy, spaciousness, high quality upscale furnishings, golf cart and stunning views. Shaped by wind and water, the southern end of Harbor Island is a constantly changing vista of sea and sand, marsh and creek, sky and light. Here, the tidal waters of Johnson’s Creek flow to the Atlantic to create this very private, quiet, natural, area of the Island with a view over the marsh to Johnson’s Creek, Hunting Island, and beyond to the beautiful Atlantic. The tidal marsh here is a favorite fishing ground for dolphin, herons, egrets, and other shore birds.

As the second to last home in Pelican Point, on the southern end of Harbor Island, this location is very much a “get away from it all” spot providing a romantic setting or a relaxing family atmosphere where you can reconnect with the kids. And every room offers a beautiful low country view! Panoramic ocean-oriented views can be enjoyed from the living area, dining area, screened porch, rear main floor master, and rear upstairs guest bedroom while the other two bedrooms enjoy views of an expansive tidal marsh at the front of the home. The screened porch is a lovely space to enjoy the fresh air and stunning ocean views. A bistro table with chairs, and two arm chairs, all with comfortable seat cushions, and an antique country bench offer seating options. Several hooks are provided for drying beach towels. The front porch overlooks a tidal marsh and is a great spot for relaxing on the swing or in one of the rocking chairs, to watch the changing marsh scene with its abundant bird life, or catch the sun going down for the day. Rediscover the beauty of Harbor’s night sky. Explore the stars from porch and yard. Villa Ma’Kai is exceptionally well furnished and appointed and comes complete with books and games to make your coastal retreat complete. Villa Ma’Kai conveniently offers two master bedroom suites on the main floor, and two additional bedrooms on the second floor. Sleeping a total of eight, the main floor master bedroom has king bed and the second offers a queen, both upstairs bedrooms offer handmade queen four poster beds.

On the main floor, the ocean side master offers gorgeous views over the marsh to the Atlantic, and opens into the ocean view screened porch off of the living area. This master bedroom features a completely renovated private bath with an oversized walk-in shower. The second master bedroom is at the front of the home with views of another beautiful tidal marsh. The remodeled bath for the second master offers a new tub/shower combination. A strategically placed pocket door allows you to close off this bath and bedroom to form a master suite, or if you prefer you can leave the pocket door open allowing general access to that bath. The second floor offers a full guest bath, and two large bedrooms. Each of the upstairs bedrooms provides a beautiful view. The rear bedroom directly faces the ocean and the ocean marsh. The second upstairs bedroom is oriented toward the ever changing tidal marsh at the front of Villa Ma’Kai. The second floor guest bath offers a tub/shower combination. The spacious living area is complete with a 42” LCD flat screen TV. A high speed wireless Internet connection is included with your rental. The brand new kitchen features high end appliances and custom cabinetry, and includes practical but fun items like a waffle maker and a slow cooker. Tableware, cloth napkins and coordinating bake/serve dishes will accentuate the great meals you'll enjoy cooking in this kitchen. Kitchenware includes a nice big pot for boiling or steaming and a dozen Lowcountry cookbooks for inspiration. For your enjoyment and comfort, Villa Ma’Kai also provides a propane gas grill and an outdoor hot/cold shower.

Your rental includes full access to the Harbor Island Beach & Racquet Club where you will find an Olympic sized pool overlooking the marshes of the Harbor River, a kiddie wading pool, a sand volleyball court, tennis court, fitness center and more.

Want to explore Hunting Island State Park whose shoreline you see from the back porch? A Hunting Island passport is provided for your enjoyment! And Harbor Island is a perfect home base for exploring the Gullah Geechee culture of St Helena and the sea islands. Whether you're Visiting the Penn Center where Martin Luther King Jr retreated to dream & plan and Pat Conroy chose to be buried, kayaking streams and rivers, exploring live oak bordered rural roads, casting a shrimp net, shopping and eating in Frogmore, or walking the marsh-edged beach at your back door, you're playing and learning in the heart of the Gullah Geechee corridor. Villa Ma’Kai offers you a unique vacation experience, and we will be happy to help with your plans for this special place.

Family Vacation
Our family really enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere at Villa Ma’Kai. We spent the majority of our time on the most relaxing beach. The morning bird watching from the house was really neat. The beds were all comfortable. The multiple power strips throughout the house made it easy for charging our devices without searching for outlets. The kitchen also had everything you needed. Thanks for the wonderful stay!

Beautiful Sunrises
Stayed here for the week just before the kids started back to school. The house is truly one of the most comfortable, easy to use spaces, with all the kitchen gadgets you’d need. But, don’t expect to use the grill as it needs updating. We went fishing with “Sea’s So Shallow” and had an amazing time. Would highly recommend chartering with Captain Steve. The bugs were awful during our stay, sometimes making us feel captive to the indoors. Several locals told us they were worse than usual due to the rains lately so maybe we just caught it on an off time. Being indoors so much with the bug situation it would’ve been nice to have a TV with a working HDMI port in the living area. The golf cart was very useful during our stay although I’m not sure it was the same upgraded cart I’d read in some of the past reviews. The Hunting Island pass was amazing to have. We used it almost daily. Kids loved pier fishing at the state park and we found several sharks teeth on the beach. The beach on St. Helena was very shallow for a long ways out as expected from other reviews. We got to see tracks in the sand from where sea turtles hatched the night before and I’ve never seen so many hermit crabs crawling around the sands. Just a beautiful place and we had a really nice family get away.

What a great spot
We absolutely loved our stay over spring break. The management company was great to work with we had an odd issue at check out and they were on it. Location is really cool, kids loved playing in the pool, ocean, low tide, basketball, etc. The golf cart was really handy to have, made it easy to check out different beaches and explore the island. Just make sure not to park in on the grass, my mother in law got a ticket, management at the island was not the nicest to deal with, but not really the renters fault. Property was clean and as pictured. We loved that it came with a pass the Hunting Island state park. We stoped in somewhere in the park almost every day. Thanks for having us.

Gorgeous property and views at the edge of the island
Would absolutely return. The property is nicer than the pictures, and the views are stunning. Each room is nicely appointed, and being at the end of the island is a wonderful seclusion. My only recommendation is that the property can be better stocked with essentials like paper towels, toilet paper, and basic kitchen items like aluminum foil, but otherwise we thought the property (and golf cart) was perfect!

Beautiful home. Great views. Lovely island friendly people, gorgeous views, and plenty to do. 2 issues with house fixed before we got back from beach. Just called left message and she got right back to us. Things happen and just like home it's not the owners fault but very fast and it was done. Had the opportunity to use the free pass to Hunting Island it's well worth the drive down the street. 4 days to enjoy paradise before are son became a Marine.

Would recommend
This duplex property is located in a super cool gated community. We loved how friendly the people were and we loved driving around the neighborhood in the golf cart. The house was plenty big enough, even though it was a duplex. You can tell the property is aging a bit, but everything worked just fine and the bathrooms were plenty nice enough. The house was well-equipped, including the kitchen...it even had utensils for eating the blue crab that we caught at the beach. Even though the house is a duplex, we had no noise problems, and we really didn't notice that we shared a wall with another group. The location is great and getting to the beach was easy enough. The beach was great. My kids, who tend to enjoy nature, were never bored with this beach. There are lots of crabs, and fish, and frogs and snakes (not poisonous) and that kept them busy enough, plus the ocean and the waves were great. The water was warm and very pleasant. The water at this spot is shallow for a long way out, so the kids could go pretty far out and still touch easily (my kids are all under 12, and they are not super tall either). I would definitely recommend this property. The only real downside was the bugs that were right around the house. Fortunately, there weren't any bugs on the beach. I assume that anywhere you go in the south, you will have to deal with bugs, so this isn't really that surprising.

Peaceful & Quaint
I’ve rented about six oceanfront beach houses in the Carolinas (north and south), And I would rank this as one of the best within this price range. Pros: Quiet gated community, very natural, beautiful wildlife and vegetation. Parking the car for the week and using only a golf cart adds the relaxation. Five minute drive to hunting beach, which is beautiful. The beach in the community it’s very calm water, Did not experience any riptides, amazing for children. Very nice swimming pool with daily food truck. Small gift shop that rents beach bikes By the day or by the week. Very Cool little tavern restaurants right outside the community. Secluded but not so far away from town that it is an inconvenience to get to stores. Well stocked kitchen. Community has access to crabbing and fishing on all sides. Cons (subjective): I would not consider it “ocean front”, It is more of a shallow Sound. Swimming in low tide is virtually impossible Because you can walk in ankle deep water for at least a football field or two before the water gradually starts to get deeper. You’ll have to wait for high tide for the water to get up around four or 5 feet deep within a 50 foot walk from the shoreline. This particular house does not have direct beach access. Amazing views from the house, but you do have to take the golf cart 5 minute ride. Was not at all an inconvenience and actually wound up being fun for the kids. But just something to know upfront.

Duplex and ploughmud
Nice condo and view but very deceptive in the picture … appeared to be a stand alone home. I didn’t like that we were so close to another family… more like a duplex. The beach was the most disappointing . At low tide the ocean was about a mile away and the ploughmud is unsuitable for walking. Won’t go back.

A most relaxing vacation
The property was in excellent condition and a terrific location. The kitchen was the most completely equipped of any past rentals over decades of such vacations. The manager was very responsive when it was determined that the Hunting Island pass was missing. The upstairs toilet required jiggling to prevent constant running and was fixed right away. We would not hesitate to return which is a first for us! Top notch!

Perect Getaway Location, Home
Our trip to Harbor Island and Villa Ma’Kai was easily the best family vacation we've taken in some time - the perfect escape from all the craziness this year! Your home was beautiful and comfortable, with plenty of space for all, and the views amazing from the bedrooms and porch. The kids loved taking the golf cart to the shore and pool, and going crabbing each day to see what we pulled up before releasing. Having the pass to Hunting Island and the beach there was an added bonus - easy to jump there and enjoy the waves. The sign up process each day for the pool was hit and miss with inconsistent policies imposed by the community's clubhouse team, but once the COVID restrictions are done that should go away and not be a concern. Overall, though, we have a fabulous time and look forward to returning next year!

Quiet and calm
The house is beautiful. Warm and inviting. Bedrooms are large with sitting areas to enjoy the gorgeous views. Kitchen had all the amenities. The use of the golf cart is a really nice. Two things to know...bring bug spray. The mosquitos are very active and if you want to enjoy the evenings you’ll need it. And, at low tide, which was the middle of the day for us, the water pushes out like .5 mile and remains knee height for another long distance. There are very little waves. Great for relaxing but our kids (10, 7, 6 and 3) wanted more activity. We did go to Hunting Island one morning (passes provided which is great), but the sand flies ran us off pretty quick. Local described them as “flying teeth.” Accurate description. Bring bug spray for early morning trip there! And go in the middle of the day for boogie boarding! None of this is in the owner’s control but a visitor just may want to be prepared. We felt like the property was amazing and exactly what we needed.

Paradise in the Low Country
Our family vacation to Villa Ma’Kai and Harbor Island was everything thing we hoped for and more. The home was plenty spacious for my wife and I, plus our three boys ages 10, 7, and 3. The interior design and decorations were beautiful, yet very comfortable. My favorite spots were sitting at the spacious kitchen bar talking with family or sitting on the back porch enjoying the panoramic views. The views from this house are simply amazing. St. Helena Sound, Johnson Creek, and the Atlantic Ocean all meeting directly in front of this home create a nature lover’s paradise. The golf cart and provided pass for Hunting Island State Park were great perks. The cart made accessing the pool and local beach access a breeze. The pool is large enough for big crowds and the basketball and tennis courts were a hit with the boys. The beaches at both Harbor Island and Hunting Island are perfect for small kids. The gradual slope of the ground and large tidal spans made for safe swimming and provide acres for exploration at low tide. Donna and Karl were great to work with and very responsive. Immediately upon arrival, Karl notified us that the dryer (the one appliance not upgraded yet) had failed just prior to our arrival. They quickly worked with the owners to get it replaced and coordinated to schedule us laundry service until the new unit arrived. As a guest, we could not have asked for better service. As soon we arrived and looked around, we knew this was a special place. As we were packing up to leave, we knew we wanted to book again for next year.

Perfect spot for family vacation!
What a perfect spot! We’d never been to the area before and we’re so pleased with the property. Karl and Donna were quick to answer questions and accommodate requests for parking passes. The property was nice and newly updated - cannot think of a more ideal spot! We had three couples and a toddler and had more than enough room. We loved having the golf cart to make getting to the pool easy. The beach is just a short walk down the neighboring boardwalk and it didn’t disappoint! Turtle nests and birds abound (also spotted two alligators!) and even spotted dolphins from the house. We explored neighboring Hunting Island State Park with the complimentary car pass and found good fishing and some lovely views there. We’re already talking about our next trip here!

Fantastic Beach house!
My husband and I rented this beach house for our 20 th anniversary. This is the cleanest and most well appointed house we’ve ever stayed in. The kitchen is stocked with everything one could need. The view is amazing from every room. Most of our time was spent on the screened in porch and on the beach itself. It was very quiet while we were there. I would not hesitate to stay here again.
