Thank you for being a gracious host. My stay was very restful and refreshing. Just what was needed. The welcoming bundles of fur were greatly appreciated. I’ll be back to enjoy some sunshine on the lake.
Gene was a very kind host and was not intrusive at all! My girlfriend and I stayed for only a few days, but definitely are looking to reserve this property for future trips! Thank you for providing such a great place for us to stay. The lake was really pretty and the ducks who visited us were very friendly. Incredibly charming location and animals around the property :) ms. Kitty is very sweet and soft, and I’m happy I got to have her greet us
Small, cozy, clean, secure studio apartment. Gene, the hostess, is very responsive. The property grounds is beautiful; unfortunately, it was too cold to fully enjoy. We would definitely stay here again.
We had a surprisingly great stay. We arrived late due to traffic, things were dark, we drove into an area unknown to us and thankfully Gere was there to flag us down! Tired and hungry, we received are key to the room and direction to a pizza place. When we opened the door to our Studio, we were blown away.it was fantastic.
The property was nice, itwould be an ideal vacation for summer months.
We were not aware of the no cooking allowed rule, we never planned to cook full meals but simple things would have been good to be able to cook. There is a hot plate and microwavnote and agreen egg was available (we were not informed about where it was and when we could use it) Additionally, cooking was vehemently discouraged by being continually reminded that if there was any odor left behind, we would be charged extra. There is no ventilation. Our service dog was revealed in our first email prior to renting but up to the hour we arrived we received harassing emails stating the dog couldn't bark, was not allowed to lift his leg to pee, could not be left alone or off leash. He is a service dog and we supplied all documentation and even stated what my disability is, ( it is actually a hipaa violation to ask.)
Overall it was a pleasant stay and we would recommend the property however definitely be prepared to ask specific questions about anything you would like to do during your stay and be prepared for strict instructions upon arrival.
Also, we wanted to have visitors during our stay and my son and his family came over one day with permission but my friend who i wanted to see has a little dog and i was afraid to ask, after receiving all the messages about the service dog.
A lovely, pretty place to visit, landscaping with birdhouses, whimsical statues among ferns, hydrangea, trees & rhododendrons.
Gene is a wonderful host, lovely to talk with. Enjoyed petting Dolly, Ms. Kitty and Mr. JB the Cat.
We will be back. Thank you Gene.
I stayed at this property with my dog who was participating in an event in Greenwood. I chose it specifically because it was dog friendly and on the water. It was perfect for us. There is a fenced in “off leash” pathway down to the lake. This was perfect because it enabled me to let my dog be off leash to do his “business”. The lake is beautiful and very private. The first day we saw no one at all, the second day just two men fishing from kayaks at 8:00 am.
The apartment is beautifully decorated and has enough space to make you fee that it is much bigger than it actually is. If there was one thing that I could change it would be the size of the refrigerator. It is very small and while it worked for me, I only had food for one person. I understand the issues of finding a refrigerator for a such small space but It might be worth checking into mini fridges with more cubic feet when they replace it. I would have been happier with less freezer space and more room for food. As I said, it was fine for me, but I just thought I’d point it out.
All in all, it was a fabulous place to stay and I hope to return!
This place was awesome! Clean, quiet, relaxing, easily accessible and well maintained. Host was very responsive and was all about us having a great stay!
Awesome host, beautiful property, peaceful place to rest, etc. This is the best vacation/private rental place that I’ve stayed at! I look forward to staying here again sometime in the future. Thank you for a great experience!
The inside of the unit was immaculately clean. The property is gorgeous, just like being out in the middle of a forest. The owner was very informative and welcoming when we arrived. We were greeted by the dog and cats who love the company of the guests! I will be booking again on my annual trips back home to Delaware. Thanks again Gene!
Lovely peaceful place to stay! We especially loved hanging down at the dock and campfires at night 😊 Also Rehoboth Beach is an easy drive from this stay too. Dover is about 20mins away & has many interesting things to see.
This is our favorite place to stay after a long day playing sports at the turf nearby. Wonderful host whom is attentive yet nonintrusive.
Thanks Gene for another wonderful stay,
This is the fourth year my wife and I have stayed here. The apartment is always very clean and neat. The bathroom is a nice size and we like the walk in shower. We enjoy lounging at the lake side deck, going out in the canoe, and a little fishing. It is a quite restful getaway. It is near Dover AFB and I recommend a visit to the Air Mobility Command Museum.
The Carriage House was a wonderful peaceful spot! The little lake out back was nice to sit by, and the accommodations of the house were just what we needed to feel at home for a weekend stay. We would definitely stay again!
The Carriage House Apartment is just as advertised! Clean and comfortable! Beautiful location. Im so thankful we stayed here. Would definitely stay again!
This was a very clean and nice place to stay. I would love to come back during the summer to take advantage of its location on the lake. There was a good amount of storage space if you like to unpack - more than I have seen in many short term rentals of this size.
We stayed for winter when the snow storm hit Delaware. All and any issues observed were taken care off, immediately. Property manager very nice with good communication. In general is a very nice place.
The Carriage House was a wonderfully cosy place to stay. Everything was comfortable - bed, chairs, sofa; the kitchen was well-equipped and easy to use; and the shower was fabulous. It was lovely to come back to warm, welcoming accommodation after a day out birding at Bombay Hook and along the coast. Thank you for a wonderful stay.
My partner and I were visiting friends for the holiday. This VRBO is situated about 20 minutes to 45 minutes from anything you might want to see it DE. Very private and on a beautiful property. A true value.
Beautiful lakeview, dock area. Lovely landscaping. Enjoyed the canoe.

About the host
Hosted by Gene Thornton
We are a retired couple who served in the military after almost three decades of traveling around the world and living all over the United States. I, Gene, grew up outside Middletown DE, attended Washington College in Chestertown MD before entering the Army in 1973. I did personnel and public affairs. My husband, Don, was a Jersey boy who attended West Point and served in the Infantry with an alternate of Operations and Training. We volunteer for the American Heart Association, the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, belong to several philanthropic, veterans, and conservation organizations. My mom passed on in February 2016 . She wanted me to "make a little rental unit" over my garage to share our property with others. You will be enjoying her furniture when you stay with us. You will be honoring her request and I hope you will feel like you are at home.
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with our house the moment we saw it because the view of the lake reminded us of the State of Washington where we had once been assigned. We entertained our mothers, our sisters and their families quite a bit when we first moved here. We spent a lot of love and labor improving the property. But now, the moms have passed on, the sisters have moved on and their families are having families of their own and none of them are nearby. We want to continue sharing our quiet location and beautiful lake with others.
What makes this property unique
You can only glimpse the lake from inside the unit, but you are welcome to use the outside of the home as if it were yours. Decks, docks, canoe, stand up paddle-boad, swim, fire-pit, try your luck with the Big Green Egg! (all at own risk, of course!). Its dark and quiet here, you will be tucked away in a forest. Join us in celebration of birds, ducks, geese, frogs and if you are lucky, you might see an eagle, blue heron, osprey, beaver or an otter while you are here.
