About this property

A wonderful place to be.....

E 'Aka 'Aka Mau loosely translates as Laughs a Lot House in Hawaiian. Our two bedroom, two bath home is a perfect getaway for couples and families! Just 400 feet from the beach, and with a beautiful view of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, our house offers two sides of Hawaii, both the ocean and the mountains. Enjoy breakfast in the morning, watching sunrise over Mauna Kea on the wrap-around deck. Take a leisurely stroll to the beach, picnic and beach chairs in hand, and enjoy the warm Pacific waters. Snorkel in Puako Bay or at nearby Waialea Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii. Swim with sea turtles, colorful fish, and perhaps even a moray eel! Afterward, relax in the screened-in lanai living space, while your meal is grilling out on the BBQ. And end your day by watching the spectacular sunset over the ocean before walking back to your Hawaiian escape.

E 'Aka 'Aka Mau House is uniquely set up to accommodate family and friends, but still afford privacy. The upstairs area is air conditioned for warmer days and has a spacious living room; the cathedral ceiling with two fans gives the space a light, airy feel. This same ambience carries over to the dining area, where koa trimmed windows and wooden floors show off the 'Hawaiian plantation' decor of the room. Open the large sliding glass doors and windows to allow in the breeze! The galley kitchen is well equipped with everything necessary to prepare any kind of meal, from a Thanksgiving turkey to Hawaiian and Asian fare. Granite-topped counters, hard-wood kitchen island, and a large, shelved pantry provide the ideal space to create meals for family and friends. And a Weber Spirit II propane grill is readily accessible on the deck, perfect for grilling that special Hawaiian dish!

Downstairs, a second air conditioned bedroom with sitting area and separate bath lends a 'studio setting' feel to the unit, and is perfect for teenage children or when two couples rent the house. It is accessed through its own separate door. For extra guests and/or small children, there is a fold-out sofa sleeper in the upstairs living room. Finally, the screened in lanai is set up as an additional living space, with a double bed futon for those wanting to sleep outdoors.

High definition TV and wifi are available to our guests. A full-sized washer and dryer are also on the premises for your use.

Our goal is to make E 'Aka 'Aka Mau House your home away from home - a place to relax, enjoy your surroundings, and laugh alot - with family and friends!

Puako Heyman House
The stay was great, as it was in 2022. It was clean when we arrived and we left it the same, and followed suggestions left in the guest book inside the house and in the owner’s note on your verbo property site. This trip I cannot find an email to Glen, so I am putting my notes in this box: (1) you need shampoo in the outdoor shower. A bottle was there, but it was empty. We there it away. (2) the coffee filters are pretty much gone (3) THE LOCKBOX DID NOT OPEN THIS MORNING WITH THE CODE, SO THE HOUSE IS UNLOCKED! We tried for 25 minutes to fiddle with the evenness of the numbers and push down the lever on the side, to no avail. We found this frustrating, and of course the house is now unprotected until your team gets there to clean. Everything was great and we had a fabulous time! Mahalo, Cynthia Royce

Fun and relaxing
A special home with great views and the ocean right across the street. You can see the Kohala mountains, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa from the living room. The neighborhood is very quiet and a nice change from the bustle of Kona. The owner did a very good job of keeping us aware of anything we needed to know about and was always responsive and friendly. We will do our best to try to make it back for another stay in the near future

Really nice location and excellent communication
The owner, Glenn, is very responsive as are his on island support for the property. It’s a great place for a couple or more with a nice, smaller space downstairs. We’ve stayed here many times and look forward to coming back.

This was our second time here and we loved it. The panoramic views are spectacular, it’s a beautiful space, wonderful art, and it’s peaceful . Being a block from the ocean is a huge added bonus.

Peaceful Stay
This was our 2nd time staying at Glenn’s home in Puako. We love it there. The house is airy and comfortable. I love the wrap around deck and the views out back. Someone compared it to the African savanna and I find that a good comparison. No giraffes or elephants but LOTS of birds. It is lovely waking up seeing Mauna Kea from the BR. The last time we were there it was erupting. No volcano show this time but the stars were amazing. I could see the Milkey Way every night. The sheets and towels are very nice. The pantry is well stocked with some nice pans, a French press, coffee mill, etc. And the pantry has a door, light and fan. There is even a wine refrigerator in the kitchen. I like the upstairs shower. We love the snorkeling at Painou when it is calm. All kinds of fish! The neighborhood is quiet, especially at night. During the day there can be leaf blowers, tree trimmers, etc. But you are suppose to be out having fun. We’ll be back again.

An incredible gem!
We are so thankful we got to stay at this beautiful home in such a great location. The sunrise view over Mauna Kea from the balcony each morning was amazing, and we walked across the street for sunset over the ocean every night. The house is located on quiet street near Wailea Beach and a malasada food truck. Turtles were across the street in the tide pools. Fruit trees in the yard were fun. The kitchen was nice with an ocean view from the window. The upstairs shower was incredible. Mahalo!

Puako paradise with mountain view
This house has lovely views of the mountains with huge windows and a lanai that stretches around the upper level. You can see the ocean from the kitchen and shower and from the lanai. Beach access is very close. We enjoyed seeing the turtles every evening at sunset. We snorkeled every morning. We also enjoyed area beaches. We hope to be back soon!

Great location and excellent home
We had a great time staying in this beautiful home and Glenn was extremely responsive to all of my questions. The house is just seconds away from the ocean and there are several great snorkeling spots within a few minutes walk from this location. The house does have one of the best stocked kitchens I've ever had in a rental so this was very convenient to prepare all our meals. Overall, the location was great; quiet neighborhood, convenience to the ocean and snorkeling spots; close to main highway. I would definitely stay here again. This place is perfect

Perfect for our needs
This is our second time renting and it has everything we need. This time we came with another couple and my mother-in-law. The downstairs space gave our friends the separate space they needed while allowing us all to spend time together. It is close to some of the best beaches on the island but away from the hustle and bustle of the resorts.

Perfect sunrises
This house is beautiful with gorgeous views of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa from the living room, bedroom and the decks. We had coffee outside every morning watching the sunrise and listening to the orchestra of birds. You can see a bit of the ocean from the kitchen, and be lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves. Walk across to he street to lava tidal pools and watch the sea turtles come in to rest….of course from a respectful distance. Beaches are a close drive and there is lots of snorkeling in the area. The neighborhood is great for early walking before it gets hot. The only negative might be that grocery stores and restaurants are not super close. And the food stores are not of the same quality as on Oahu or the Mainland, but definitely doable. There are some terrific restaurants and local spots….just requires a little planning and go early. But again, very doable and enjoyable. My husband and I have stayed at several locations on the Big Island and this is one is our favorite. We are already planning our next visit. Fabulous Location & Kind Hospitality!
Stay here and you will have the trip of a lifetime. The turtles greeted us each day and, as our visit coincided with whale season we saw a number of whale tails throughout our trip. Hawaii Surf and Kayak provided us a guided kayak tour of Puako Bay where we were able to see more sea life just outside of Hapuna Bay. We hope to return again to this wonderful house!

Sunrise, sunset
From one of the sun decks you can watch the sun rise over Mauna Kea in the morning , and in the evening you can stroll to the beach and watch it set far across the Pacific. With its high ceilings, compelling views and rich interior, this spacious, comfortable, and quiet (save for the birdsong) accommodation was the perfect place to be on our 55th wedding anniversary .

Sublime!
Serene setting located in between Mauna Lani Resort and Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area. Enjoyed watching the butterflies, birds and geckos from the wall of windows or wrap around deck. Easy walk across the street to the lava rock beach for gorgeous sunsets. Shore snorkeling available at several nearby beaches. A kayak and snorkel tour departs from Puako Beach as well. Main living area is accessed via an outdoor flight of stairs.. Main level bedroom has views. Ground floor bedroom has adjacent screened in lanai. No interior access between bedrooms. Nicely appointed and well stocked kitchen made meal prep a pleasure. The beach gear, including chairs, cooler, boogie boards and snorkel equipment, was much appreciated.

Loved the little house at Puako! Very nice design. Well equipped kitchen. Beautiful views of the mountains. Great access to the shore. Loved walking to the Fairnont (snorkeling) and Mauni Lani (fishponds) properties, watching sunsets, and seeing the turtles. Our only complaint is we wished we would have stayed longer.

About the host

Host profile image
We have enjoyed coming to Hawaii over the years and have particularly enjoyed the unique community of Puako. It's a great place for family and friends. We feel at home here in Hawaii, and want to share that with others who visit this amazing paradise.

Why they chose this property

Puako is a very special place. It is a unique community blending full-time residents, retirees, and short and long term renters. Quiet, peaceful, and beautiful, it is reminiscent of what Hawaii was like fifty years ago. Some of the best snorkeling is available literally within a stone's throw of our home. However, we are close to other activities - including Mauna Lani Resort for golf or to enjoy a nice dinner out, to Hawi and the Kohala Peninsula to visit galleries, whale watch, and swim, and to Waimea for its farmer's market, restaurants and unique Hawaiian Cowboy culture!
