About this property

WHISPERS OF THE WILDERNESS - Minocqua Area Lake Home

NEW FOR 2021/22: gas stove fireplace, king log bed in master, new carpet, new mattresses & linens, dock bench & swim ladder, stand up paddleboard, 2nd canoe, 2 kayaks

New in 2019/20: Northwoods décor, 40" flatscreen TV, outdoor firepit, gas grill, graded driveway & parking pad, Wi-Fi, outdoor hammock.

Escape the hustle and enjoy the Northwoods as it is meant to be--with pristine, unspoiled vistas, peace, and quiet. We are located on a peninsula on 200 acre Wind Pudding Lake, with 450 feet of frontage and water on three sides. Wind Pudding Lake is rated as one of the top 10 clearest lakes in Wisconsin by the UW-Extension Program. Our house is situated just 60 feet from the shore and commands panoramic 180 degree views.

You will see no neighbors and have this virtually undeveloped lake for yourself! This lake has limited public access, no resorts, so you can enjoy the serenity. The lake is a beautiful combination of open water with 34 foot depths and areas of lily pads and sedge grasses that attracts a variety of birds and fish. The lake front is unspoiled and teeming with wildlife. There is good panfish fishing and occasional perch, bass, and even northern pike.

If you are looking to stay on a motor boat lake, this is not where you want to vacation. If, however, you wish to have a peaceful, relaxing vacation with no noise and complete privacy (there are no neighbors in sight), where you can swim, enjoy the eagles nesting on the nearby island, do a little canoeing or kayaking, and fish, we can't be beat!

This is also an excellent home base to explore nearby Minocqua (10 minutes), Lake Tomahawk (10 minutes), Eagle River (15 minutes), and Rhinelander (20 minutes). There are thousands of great fishing and boating lakes in the area, along with hundreds of miles of hiking, biking, and snowmobile trails.

Our home has 3 bedrooms:
1) Kids - twin over full bunkbed plus separate twin bed
2) Guest - queen bed
3) Master - king bed with en-suite bath

Our home has 2 full baths upstairs and a main level half bath. The kitchen has stainless steel appliances, including full size refrigerator, oven, stove, microwave, and dishwasher. Cooking utensils, dishes, coffee maker, and toaster are provided for your use. The living room contains a leather sectional and leather recliner, with flatscreen TV, DVD player, Fire TV, Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max. . There is Wi-Fi internet and a wide selection of DVDs, books, and games.

There is also a deck overlooking the water, dock with bench, swim raft & swim ladder, hammock, charcoal grill, gas grill, firepit, 2 canoes, 2 kayaks, row boat, and stand up paddle board.

Far nicer than description

We had planned on using Whispers as a home base to tour the area. From the moment we walked in the house, my wife and I had the exact same thought. Why go anywhere?!! Between the great view of the lake, welcoming fireplace, and charm we decided to hang out and simply unwind. We found the place immaculately clean, and staged as if the owners expected special guests! Tonya was quick to respond to our questions and very accommodating as well. Whispers is a charming well appointed cabin, in a private wilderness like setting, that exceeded all our expectations. We are already looking forward to our next stay! Thank You Brandon and Tonya for a wonderful weekend! And for opening your house to us. Dave and Cj.

Property as advertised- very comfortable!

The home was great- if you are looking to swim, or wanting a summer beach experience for kids, this is not the property for you. The house is situated in an area where the water is heavily populated by vegetation. Kayaking and paddle boarding would be terrific on this water- none are provided so bring your own. There is a row boat, but new paddles are in order. The road to the home is like a logging road- be sure you have a vehicle with ground clearance. Storms can roll in very quickly - we lost power the final night for approximately five hours. We did find a couple of flash lights but would have benefited from having some led lanterns. The property is very close to Minocqua- this was a plus, making it easy to grab items we needed. We enjoyed our stay and would utilize the property in the future if we were going to be in the area.

Peace, Quiet, Kayaking and Fishing

My family of 5 (boys 18, 20, 22) and my SIL and MIL loved the peace and quiet of the property. We had everything we could have wanted - rowboat, canoes and especially the kayaks and stand up paddle board - to explore Wind Pudding Lake. My sons loved the idea of walking on the floating bog structures, and paddling in the lilies. I didn't attempt a bog walk, but thoroughly enjoyed the serenity of cruising along in my kayak and just enjoying the birdsong and sunshine. (One note: this is a muck bottom lake, and the area where you take the water craft in an out will steal your shoes if you aren't careful - bring a pair you don't like or go barefoot!) The house was VERY well appointed - we had everything we needed to cook most of our meals on site, and enjoyed watching movies and shows on the Amazon Fire stick in the evenings when we weren't out enjoying a fire down by the water. I'm not sure if the bog has some effect on it, but I have NEVER stayed on a lake in more than 35 visits to the Northwoods with less mosquitos! We tried fishing in multiple locations (except the eastern lobe of the lake - the bogs appeared to have shifted and closed the passage) in the lobe of the lake where the house sits, but the best was just off the dock. We caught an abundance of blue gills and a few bass. Even the blue gills put up a good fight, and we were able to enjoy a fish dinner one night. As remote as the house is (be aware the last part of the driveway is unpaved - take it nice and slow!), we were only minutes away from Minocqua for easy shopping, eating out and visiting some of the local attractions. This was my 3rd VRBO rental in the Northwoods, and by far the best. If you need to get away, relax, do some paddling, catch a few fish and catch up with your family, this is the perfect place.

Private & quiet

Our adult family of six recently stayed for the week. The cabin is at the end of the lane and very private and secluded from the other cabins on the lake. It felt as if the lake was all ours, yet we were close enough to drive in to Minocqua for all of our adventures. We will definitely be back.

Perfect up north getaway

I meant to leave a review earlier, but we had the wonderful time during our week here in early July 2021. The kids loved the swim raft and fishing. Everything was clean, beautiful home and property. We had lots of privacy. We enjoyed spotting bald eagles and taking the kayaks & canoe out. Perfect retreat for a family.

Adult Family Vacation

Property was perfect and exactly as advertised. Seven adults greatly enjoyed the week whether we were eating family breakfasts, playing board games, fishing, bonfires, drinking adult beverages, or simply enjoying the peace and quiet, or of course watching the wildlife. The property is very secluded so we never felt as if we had neighbors and the deer were always welcome guests. Fishing was great, my husband called it catching as that’s what was always happening. The home had everything you needed including small touches that left you feeling like you were at home. My family is hoping to make time to return next year!

Perfect laid-back vacation! Peaceful and secluded, just you and wildlife! They have everything that you need on site, in the house and outdoor toys, you don't need to bring much else. Owners checked in right away. Not a thing to complain about! Thanks to this vacation now my kids want us to buy kayaks!! LOL!

Hard to leave!

It was everything listed and more! The home, grounds and lake were beautiful and well kept. The house has all amenities we needed and was spotless. We found we spent most of our time on the lake with the loons, eagles and sandhill cranes. We caught bass, northern, blue gills and crappies right off the deck. The mama deer with her baby came right onto the property for us to watch. It really was a special week for my family. It's just how its listed, maybe better! We will be returning!

Relaxing Getaway

This rental was nothing short of amazing! The house itself had everything we needed but the property & lake really made the trip for us! There were so many outdoor activities to enjoy from fishing & kayaking to relaxing by the fire & enjoying the serene surroundings (including a ton of wildlife). The hosts were very helpful with any questions we had and even sent a message halfway through our trip to ensure everything was going well. I'm very thankful that they are willing to share this wonderful place with us! :)

Awesome getaway

Stayed here with a few friends for a weekend fishing getaway. The house was fantastic and in a great location. The lake was scenic and even had a few bald eagles to watch. Caught some bluegills while fishing but didn't have any luck going for anything bigger. Overall a great weekend.

Lovely in the Fall

We were a group of 8 adult family members ages 50s to 80s. We had a wonderful time. The lake is quiet and somewhat unusual in that it is almost more like a wetland area with enough open water for small boats. That said, there are a nice variety of kayaks, canoe and fishing boat provided. The house is new, comfortable and well appointed both in terms of furniture and kitchen items. The beds were comfortable and there are tons of windows providing lots of natural light and great views in every direction. It's the last house on the road for plenty of privacy. The owners answered questions promptly and the fall colors were spectacular!

Tranquil Retreat

The cabin is lovely and welcomes you upon entering. It is stocked with everything you may need for your stay. There were kayaks, a canoe and row boat to use. My husband and I paddled around the lake and encountered a pair of bald eagles which we were able to watch almost every day along with the deer that wandered onto the property each morning and evening. Our friends had fun catching fish from the dock too. We also enjoyed some UTV/ATVing on trails not too far from the cabin. The quietness of the woods and area made for a very relaxing time. If we had any questions, Tonya (Owner) responded very quickly. I would recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing, laid back vacation.

Comfy, secluded stay

I cannot recommend this property enough - the owners were super responsive and helpful throughout the process. Plenty to do with all of the water activities - or just hang out on the dock and watch the bald eagles fly around every single day! Great wildlife and birds around. The house was very comfortable for me, my husband and 4 kids. Well appointed kitchen and big enough to even cook more complicated meals. No A/C is no problem in the northwoods. There was only one sticky night and the very powerful fans worked like a charm. We loved our stay! Thanks!

Peaceful and Serene

This property is amazing! Views of the lake from everywhere and you feel like you are all alone in this gorgeous setting! The house was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. Outside it’s a Northwoods dream. Woods surround on one side and the lake on the other. There was a hammock to relax in, comfortable outdoor seating, a rowboat, canoe and two kayaks to use. We lost track of how many fish we caught! We spotted bald eagle, cranes, loon, beaver, otter, deer and so many birds. Large fire pit and woodland noises made every evening special. It was the perfect getaway!!

Host profile image
My husband and I are from Waunakee, WI, which is about 10 minutes North of Madison, WI. We were married in September 2009. I am a UW-Madison alum and my husband is a UW-Whitewater alum. We love to travel, discover new restaurants, and go camping & hiking. We have two very active daughters, Averi who is 8-years old and Lakelyn who is 4-years old.

Why they chose this property

We love the solitude of the home. It sits on a private lake surrounded completely by state forest. It truly feels like you are on a remote lake in Canada; however, you are just 10 minutes from all of the area's best attractions. Close proximity to Minocqua, Lake Tomahawk, Rhinelander, etc.
