See Angela Bird's cycling page.

Sailing: Beginners and children can take lessons at La Tranche-sur-Mer on a specially prepared lagoon.

Naturism: There is a nudist beach to the south of La Faute sur Mer, towards the point.

Things to do and places to visit:

Le Puy du Fou - This famous history theme park is unique in Europe, offering a full day out, packed with fun for all ages, including a Roman amphitheatre with chariot races and gladiators, falconry displays and recreated villages from several different periods of history. The 'Grand Park' with its day-time attractions is open to visitors, without reservation, throughout the season and there is night-time 'son-et-lumiere' open air theatre for which you need to book months in advance (but well worth it!). See their web site.

Exotic gardens of Court d'Aron - St Cyr-en-Talmondais. Thousands of rare plants in a delightful setting. Spectacular lotus flower lakes in bloom from June to September. See Court d'Aron.

Perfumed Gardens at Coex - Unique collection of fragrant plants from all over the world, boutique of natural perfumes. See site.

Aquariums - At Port Bourgenay and, of course, at La Rochelle.

Green Venice - Many villages in the south-east corner of the Vendee offer punt hire or guided trips (Velluire, Vix, Damvix, Maillezais). Maillezais offers a good restaurant next to the embarcation as well as the ruined abbey to visit.

Clisson: Very picturesque, with its chateau on the river bank.

Tiffauges: 'Blue Beard Chateau', (medeival warefare displays), model village, picnic spots on the river bank.
La Rochelle: Just south of the Vendee, in Charente Maritime. The old port with its famous street cafés and restaurants and the historic town centre are well worth a visit, as is the fabulous aquarium. Boat trips to La Rochelle from some of the Vendee's coastal resorts.
Nantes: Well worth a visit, for its splendid architecture, great shopping and the excellent choice of restaurants in the old quarter.

Noirmoutier: Linked to the mainland by bridge and by the famous causeway (Le Gois), exposed at low tide.

Fantastic barn
We had a great week here in what is an absolutely beautiful and very well presented barn. All the key activities(great beaches, water parks etc) are reachable by short drive. Steve was great and very responsible. We hope to come back sometime soon

Excellent property
Very nicely furnished and comfortable, clearly a well loved family gite rather than just a holiday let. We were very impressed. The lack of WIFI was a bonus as our kids played games together instead. Good peaceful location as very close to O'gliss and O'fun parks. 20 mins to La Tranche Sur Mer and Les Conches beaches. Would definitely recommend.

The holiday we were hoping for
The lovely property gave us just the holiday we were looking for. It was comfortable and very easy to live in. Everything worked as it should, including the wifi. We loved watching the birds and wandering along the paths nearby. The weather was super, we visited a different beach on each of our 8 afternoons, some sandy, some with rock pools, we paddled and sat in the sun. Many thanks to Stephen for answering my questions so patiently, for allowing us to book mid-week and for the wine on arrival

BEAUTIFUL, COMFORTABLE, SPACIOUS, QUIET
It felt great to arrive in such a comfortable, clean, property after a long drive. We immediately felt welcome and relaxed. Indoors is cool and spacious and perfectly equipped. The kids loved their rooms and the electronics. The decor is simple and stylish and the shower was great. Outdoors, it was great to eat in the quiet under the umbrella or relax in the loungers. We explored the ponds and the wildlife and played petanque out front. Stephen was always helpful and easy to communicate with. La Tranche-sur-Mer has a lovely shopping area. We really loved Jard-sur-Mer and explored other beautiful beaches. We enjoyed the evening market at Moutiers on Friday night. We went to the O'Gliss water park, which has some sniffy reviews on Tripadvisor, we had a great time. Needless to say, I didn't want to leave.

Would be 5-stars but...
We spent a wonderful two weeks in this beautiful property in what is a truly beautiful area. Would be a 5-star review but for the lack of WiFi, something which was not made clear in the property listing (last mention being a 2017 review complaining about the poor wifi, and a response saying it was in the process of being sorted). It didn't occur to us to check this in advance because, frankly, who doesn't provide internet access in a holiday rental these days? Lack of access to the internet (mobile data also being very weak and intermittent) made planning our days out difficult, especially as so many places require online booking in advance now.

Lovely converted barn. Ideal getaway in the vendee.
Really enjoyed a 12 night stay at the barn. Very comfortable & spacious in the heart of quiet countryside but within less than 15 min drive to the coastal towns and beautiful sandy beaches. We loved the comfortable lounge area with large screen TV and the modern kitchen area that has all the equipment you might need. The decking area is also ideal for enjoying the sunshine. We enjoyed day trips to Puy du Fou theme park and Futuroscope. La Rochelle is an hours drive and worth a visit. Definitely the attraction to the Vendee are the golden sandy beaches and there are numerous to pick from for swimming and water sports. You definitely need a car to get about but if you don't mind that and want peace and quiet then the barn is ideal. The only issue we experienced was access to the WiFi that was less accessible than we would have liked. Hopefully the owner will sort that as it wouldn't take much to improve. Overall this is a very nice gite and we would be happy to stay there again if we return to the Vendee.

Charming, well-equipped barn
We had a lovely time at the barn, a nice balance between seclusion and good access to the main road and the sights of the area. Barn was spacious and well equipped and having two separate outdoor areas made it feel even bigger. Recommended.

Lovely quiet and peaceful place to stay
We had a lovely stay in this well-equipped gite and enjoyed the peace and quiet of the countryside as well as the nearby golden beaches and little towns. The gite is positioned up a little dirt track surrounded by farmland with a little lake close by where a heron and and some otters live. We saw the heron on our first day, but had to be a little more patient to see the sleek otters swimming around, they were amazing though. The Gite is well equipped with almost everything you can think of. It even has BBC, DVDs to watch, games to play and a games console for kids. The kitchen is large with an island table, and had everything apart from sharp knives (the knives they have are pretty blunt). We enjoyed self catering, and appreciated the welcoming bottle of wine. The bedrooms are a decent size and both double beds are very comfortable. There is enough storage space, with a lovely, large wardrobe in the main bedroom. The single beds weren't quite as comfortable, but the room was nice. The Wi-Fi works fine if you follow their instructions and remember to charge it. The garden is pretty and there is a good children's play area which I'm sure kids would enjoy. We enjoyed relaxing in the garden reading books and made use of the decent size washing line to dry all our clothes. We appreciated having a cool box and ice packs to use and there were even body boards available if you felt so inclined. Our favourite beach was at Faut sur mer as it is away from the crowds and has a wood that you walk through to get to it which is lovely to retreat to when you want some shade. Everyone sits there to have lunch! We took our bikes and enjoyed cycling around the area. We discovered you have to go to individual local tourist offices to get routes for circle rides in the area (there is one main book then individual leaflets) . We found some great rides starting from Avrille, several which were numbered individually and one which was called Boucle Megaliths. All of these were perfectly signposted and very easy to follow. In contrast, the map we had with circle routes from the tourist office in Moutiers les Mauxfaits were almost impossible to follow. The signs would appear for a while and then completely vanish leaving you quite frustrated and irritated! Of course there are also long trail routes along the coast which are also well signposted, so you can never run out of cycle paths to explore. A lovely gite and a wonderful place to stay, we would well recommend it.

Another amazing holiday!
Another fantastic holiday at the barn. We love it so much and it really always feels like a home from home, with everything you could possibly need from a cool box to a built in BBQ! This time we ventured back to Atlantic Tobbogan, which is an hour and 20 mins away and the children (11 and 13) loved the new slides. Although we have had a brilliant time at the Indian Forest, we tried out the brand new water park L'Ogliss which was literally 5 mins away ( you can see the barn from the top of the high slides). The park was awesome; we arrived at 10.15am and didn't leave until 6.30pm. We also spent a few days at the Les Conches beach, which is our favourite as the children love bodyboarding. A new t-shirt and hoodie purchased from Manusurf too! Thanks again for a wonderful stay, see you again soon!

Lovely place for a quiet holiday
We enjoyed a week here in July 2015, although a very rainy week we found things to do including the Aquarium at la Rochelle and Indian Forest which was just 5 mins drive from the Gite also some lovely beaches which were only 10 mins away. The Gite itself was lovely very well equipped and we felt really at home the pictures really don't do it justice , the kids loved the garden and it's play equipment and I felt quite happy for the little ones to play outside and the big ones to go exploring, we had great neighbours who also had children so all in all a really great holiday.

Beautiful, peaceful gite
The gite was beautifully decorated and equipped with everything you could ask for, from a bottle of wine chilling in the fridge on arrival, to a cool box to use for picnics. Despite less than perfect weather, we had a super stay, with our three children, and enjoyed exploring the surrounding area and its beaches, as well as closer to home. The otters in the pond behind the gite were a delight to watch; Indian Village was well worth a visit; and we even saw a wild boar from the hayloft bedroom one night. Thoroughly recommended.

Great Holiday !!
Really very pleased indeed with accomodation. Loads to do in the surrounding area. Vendee really does have a lot to offer - for us with 3 kids had some great days out be it beach, kayaking or cycling. The location of the Gete is perfect for exploring this region of France. We even looked at some properties ourselves as we loved the region ! I would add the the owners where very helpful indeed as our arrival date changed and there was some changes around our arrival/departure - all enquires where dealt with very promptly indeed in the most helpful manner possible. Highly recommended !

… what a great place!
We enjoyed a very relaxing and quiet holiday in the gite and had a great time. The moment we entered the house, we felt at home and also the kids loved it and didn’t want to leave. The rooms are furnished very nicely at a very high standard and decorated with love. The building itself has so much charm – we felt in love immediately. The gite is located in a beautiful quiet setting, surrounded by cornfields. To see and smell the nature was fantastic. The beaches in the area are superb and it takes only some 10 minutes drive. Also worth to visit the local markets in the small towns near the beaches. All in all – this place was exactly what we were looking for and we can strongly recommend to book the gite for a quiet, high-standard and relaxing holiday.

What a fantastic place.....
We spent two weeks here and had a fantastic time. The gite is just as it is described if not better. Very well equipped, with everything you need for your stay. Very well situated, being far enough off the main road to allow you to sit outside and relax without noticing the traffic. The provision of sunbeds at both the front and back allows you to follow the sun,,,,,when it does come out... The chance to walk outside in the early evening and watch the otters playing on the pond was fantastic. The beaches are supberb and well worth the 10-15 minute drive. Plenty of good restaruants and shopping in the local villages. All in all we had a great two weeks holiday..........

Great place, lovely gite!
We spent 5 days here as a family in June (2 adults + 2 children who are 4 & 14). The gite is amazing and finished to a really high standard, it feels very spacious and when we first walked in the 'loft' catches your eye immediately. The gite was very comfortable and had everything you could possibly think of from cooking utensils, hairdryer, BBQ & washing machine to name a few! We all had such a lovely time, the gite location is very peaceful and quiet yet if we wanted to head somewhere busier it was only 10-15 minutes away from La Tranche - a great base to explore this area of France. We visited lots of superb beaches where the kids could play all day & also both adults and kids enjoyed the 'Indian Forest' which was a few minutes away (a little bit like Go Ape in the UK only better). We would highly recommend this gite & I'm sure we will return.

My wife and the family, Jessica and Jack love traveling to France for our holidays, we find the French people very welcoming and the country full of fantastic places to visit.

Why they chose this property

We had been to many places in france, but found this area one of the best in regards of weather, beaches and things to keep the children very happy and entertained, we didn't want the hussle of busy resorts but the traquility and natural wildlife right on our door step feel, and we found it with this barn, surrounded with sweetcorn fields two large ponds and ousing wildlife such as wild boar, roe deer, ragondin, praying mantis, glow worms ect.

What makes this property unique

The piece and quite of the fantastic French countryside, right on natures door step with a front row seat to sit back and watch the wild life and within 15 minutes of the busy seaside resort of La Tranche sur mer!!

The barn was built with ancient stone from the old monasterys of Moutiers and retain a lot of the original features of the old cattle barn, with walls nearly two foot thick the barn keeps mostly cool in the summer.Inside feels very big and airy and is very homely.
We love waking up in the morning and having breakfast outside on the east facing decking with the sun shining down on us, in the evening its out on the front for the evening BBQ whilst watching the sun set...Fantastic.
