A great hideaway for rest but also close to amenities and outdoor adventures.

I visited the area to ski and my adult daughter came along to stay at the cabin and relax. The property owner, John, allowed for both privacy and assistance. My daughter relaxed and recuperated from ICU RN work. She relaxed and also fed the ducks and chickens on sight. John allowed her to collect fresh chicken eggs for meals. The cabin and property is a bit quirky (in a good way) and very clean. It's great as a restful getaway and also good for large parties wanting outdoor adventures nearby. I recommend highly.

Mountain farm bliss

John is a wonderful host. We found Emerald Gate Farms to be the perfect spot to retreat from the hustle bustle of everyday life. We woke each morning to the simple joy of a coffee, a porch rocker, the awesome sight of a morning mountain emerging from the mist, and the sounds of a babbling creek and the hilarious cacophony of begging waddling ducks eager for the corn meal handout John provides guests. We enjoyed leisurely walks around the ponds, the companionship of the farm's two working Great Pyrenees, Polly and Clyde, and cool evening dinners on the porch with a free sunset show. We found the farm's proximity to Waynesville, I-40 W, and Blue Ridge Parkway afforded us and our own Great Pyrenees, Gidget, the opportunity to enjoy downtown strolls, pet-friendly restaurants, a brew pub, sunset mountain picnics, challenging hikes, concerts by the creek, a farmer's market, Lake Junaluska walks, and visits with family and friends throughout the area. We'll be back!

Wonderful Vacation!

We loved our stay on the farm. It’s the perfect mix of mountain views and yard for kids to play in. The owner is so nice and loves to show you around his property. Our kids loved the dogs and feeding the ducks. The view off the porch in the morning while enjoying a cup of coffee can’t be beat!

Asheville Area Retreat

Emerald Gate is a very nice, quiet getaway to the Asheville, NC area. The home was well suited to our needs, spacious and handy to the local and regional activities and sites. Anyone desiring a visit to this area should consider using this home as a center point. The host was very accommodating and was readily available to assist in any way.

Can’t wait to go back

This property is gorgeous and situated in the beautiful nc mountains - not too far from the cataloochee valley or Maggie valley. JC is a fabulous host and provides many opportunities to learn about life on a farm. My kids enjoyed learning about the livestock, ponds and plants. We were able to pick green beans and raspberries. This was a wonderful experience and we hope we can go back soon.

Week Vacation at Emerald Gate Farm

Emerald Gate Farm was just what I wanted for my week in the mountains with my husband and brother in law and friend. The Farm is well situated where you can enjoy the beautiful mountain view while sitting on the porch drinking your morning coffee and afternoon drinks with family and friends. We enjoyed the farm and loved watching the two dogs patrol the grounds keeping away any predators that might attach the guineas and hens. The babbling brook was intoxicating although you couldn't wad in it due to vegetation growth that grew along its edges. Fantastic grapes, pears, raspberries along with any other seasonal vegetables in John's garden were available to us. We certainly took advantage of his hospitality and enjoyed the fruits and vegetables. Located very close to Waynesville and Maggie Valley was a plus. John, the owner, is on site in his house (not very visible from the VRBO house) and enjoys showing you the property and telling you interesting things about the property and his life as well. We so enjoyed his company and wished we had more time to get to know him. He is very accommodating even taking my brother in law in his ATV to find special wood for his wood carving business. The only downer I can give this wonderful piece of paradise is that the interior of the house is in need of updating. Wall paper is old and the curtains are not in keeping with the rustic appeal of a mountain home. But, keep in mind all four of us are in our early to mid 70's and probably are a little more critical in our thoughts on interior design than younger adults would be. All in all, a most enjoyable experience that we hope to do again. Thank you John. Hope to see you next year.

Quiet and restful

The property was relaxing especially listening to the brook running through. The dogs are adorable and friendly. Enjoyed the host, and his wonderful garden with cucumbers, potatoes, and onions. Attentive to any issues and felt very safe. Fresh eggs was a nice touch. Enjoyed listening to the roosters, hens, and guineas daily. If rest and relaxation is needed this is the place. Spacious for a family and rustic decor.

Great Mountain Escape

Wonderful mountain escape that is still close enough to town for grocery trips. We made easy day trips to a variety of things: hiking, museums, Cherokee Indian Village, train ride, etc. The host is wonderful and willing to teach all about sustainable farm living.

Relaxing and fun time.

Out of the way, private property with the owner right next door. Lots of animals and great fun for the children - feeding chickens and guinea hens and collecting eggs. Watching the wildlife and mountain storms from the porch... Great time!!

Great place for a getaway.

JC is one cool dude living the dream on his farm. And he is more than gracious to share it with you. Fishing pond, fresh eggs from his barn, fire pit for s’mores and two amazingly sweet and a bit kleptomaniac dogs are just some of the things that make his farm awesome. Highly recommended!!

We love Emerald Gate Farm!

We had such an enjoyable stay at Emerald Gate Farm. John is such a kind and sharing host that readily gave us tours around his property. We really enjoyed talking with him. We loved watching the chickens (and eating their fresh eggs!), guineafowl, and ducks. The pig enjoyed our fruit and veggie scraps. Polly and Clyde the Pyrenees pups are the sweetest. We enjoyed cozying up by the gas fireplace, playing games at the large kitchen table, and relaxing on the wrap around porch. Waynesville is a beautiful town just up the road (don’t miss Orchard Coffee voted NC’s #1 coffee (their honey cinnamon latte is to die for). Beer and food at nearby Boojum Brewery was also delicious (they have a full menu). Asheville is just 26 miles up I 40, a close drive as well and we enjoyed a day in GSMNP in the other direction. Took our dogs for a stroll around Lake Junaluska one morning which was a scenic and well paved loop through a neighborhood of neat homes. We will definitely be back to John’s farm at Emerald Gate.

A quaint farm

Overall, the stay was great. The house is spacious and fit what we needed for our group. It’s listed as handicap accessible and is a great option compared to most but some things to consider for those that need it: the wheelchair ramp in the back is great but has no lights at night, so plan your arrival if this matters-it’s a bit steep, much easier for wheelchairs than walkers. The master bathroom is a stand up shower with rails! -so helpful for my mom but none of the toilets are handicap accessible. The secondary bathroom is large enough for a chair or walker to enter but has a low toilet with no rails to grab onto. If needed, bring your own toilet chair. The dogs and the owner, JC, we’re so friendly. The house overall is wholesome and makes you feel like you’re staying at a grandparents house-a home away from home. The gravel driveway has a large dip at the top that bottoms out a car/van. Bring a taller vehicle if needed. This location is about 19 minutes from Waynesville, 25 minutes to Asheville/Biltmore and about 45 minutes from Cherokee- just what we needed. There is a Toffee place about two miles away that you HAVE to try out- Cold Mountain Toffee. It was out of this world! We went back a few times during our stay. 💕💕💕

What we enjoyed was the property including the dogs, ducks, hens, roosters and John - the owner. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay on the 13 acre Emerald Gate Farm. John was a real pleasure to get to know and was very kind and helpful. Took us around the property including a "Ranger" ride to the top of the mountain. Quiet, peaceful setting with beautiful views and a babbling brook with nice small ponds for fishing or relaxing. Large decks around the house and a big two car garage. John was an awesome host and now a friend.

My personal dream type location

My favorite spot was the porch looking out onto the yard, the sound of the cascading creek through the center of the yard. The ponds down the hill with the mountain view up overhead, just beautiful. The porch goes around almost 3/4 of the house with a ramp down to the driveway as well. JC was an amazing host this property may become a yearly trip for us I enjoyed it so much! Thank you!!!!! Oh and be sure to visit Soco Falls, 20 minutes away, just off the road, steep climb down then back up!!
