Will Never Stay Again
Sanitation and Cleanliness was an issue - filthy. Safety was huge issue - the pictures and description on website very misleading and not accurate. Access to property on driveway is unsafe - not disclosed. No central air and small window AC - could not use some upstairs BR as too hot. Definitely not recommended for seniors or children and overall would not recommend for anyone. When we talked to the owner about the issues the only thing they cared about was the review and offered me a small refund not to post the review. Worst property and host we have ever stayed with.

Eclectic unique property in a beautiful, peaceful location.
This property was Perfect for our family of four. The master bed was very comfortable and the house was equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. We enjoyed getting up in the morning and having a cup of coffee outside while watching the deer that would appear out of the woods.

Peoria area retreat
Was a pleasant stay here for a long weekend with family. The house was charming and we loved the details like the old fashioned wallpaper and all the available pots/pans/etc in the kitchen for cooking. Highly recommend checking out local farmers markets on the weekends and Peoria heights area. Close to grandview drive which would be beautiful in the fall.

Nice little house perched on a wooded lot. Inside steps are narrow and somewhat steep. Beds were comfortable and bathrooms were nice and clean. It was quaint and a nice place to stay. Television options could be upgraded.

Pamela made me feel at home from check in to check out! The property is absolutely beautiful, quite, and serene(the deer are photogenic too) The attached porch is my favorite part! Close to town; yet nestled in the woods for the true getaway feel! I’ll definitely be back!!

Charming, clean, comfortable - great experience
The love and care put into this property is evident throughout. This century old home has both the charm of the past and the function of the present. It was also impecibly clean and comfortable. The owner/host clearly cares about her guests, and made the check in process easy for us. While only there for 2 nights, it served as a wonderful home base for our hiking excursion up to Matthiessen State Park near Starved Rock about an hour from the home. There seem to be other hiking options closer, and if we'd had more time, we would have like to explore more of the area. Definitely something we'll consider in the future.

A stunning place!
Pamela’s house is a GEM! Easily one of my top VRBO/AIRBNB-type experiences ever. The house itself is lovely, private, and quiet—a real “retreat” vibe. It’s incredibly well cared-for, detailed, and tasteful, with a quaint Victorian set-up. The photos really don’t give the full picture; it’s a truly unique and special place. Pamela herself could not have been more generous, kind, and friendly, and she was very easily reachable. She has great recommendations for the area, is just a truly generous spirit. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Absolutely would stay again.

Loved the wooded area
Pamela was there to greet us and show us around the place. She was a wonderful hostess. We loved the fact that it was kinda hidden in the wooded area and even saw 2 deer upon arrival. It was far enough away from things yet close enough that you still got to where you wanted in a reasonable amount of time. We would stay again in a heartbeat.

Beautiful Retreat on the Hill.
What a lovely throw back in time. A wonderful, peaceful home full of comfortable memories around every corner. We enjoyed the leaves drifting down from the trees and watching for deer in the woods surrounding the home. This Story Book Home is located conviently to all emmenities in town and still retains its hidden charm. Someday we hope to come back.! Thank you again! Patti and Tom

Whimsical house in natural setting
We enjoyed the feeling of being out in the woods while being just minutes from Peoria Heights and Peoria. The doe just outside the windows, and all the birds and other creatures that came (we picked up some bird seed to put out) made our visit to this hidden gem even more special. Pamela was very friendly and helpful.

Loved everything about Pams beautiful home
My brother and I were in town for family, our step mom passed and dad had been sick, we needed a safe clean place to lay our heads after long days, and pams place is so much more than we expected. It was quiet, very clean and way better than a hotel room. Pam met us and showed us around and was so easy to communicate with, the pictures do not do this beautiful home justice. There's a washer/dryer in basement which is quite lovely in itself. Everything we needed and then some. I highly recommend to everyone. It was a beautiful home and our sanctuary in our time of need. Thank u Pam:), God Bless u!! Only thing to note was stairs are steep going to master, just be aware and go slow and it's worth it.

Quaint Warm and close by the city
What a beautiful location. This 1907 home has been treated well over the past 100+ years. What a delightful stay. And its a 15 minute drive into the city. Pam was more than accommodating and gracious to us. The other two guys who traveled with me enjoyed her home as much as I did. We highly recommend it to anyone traveling into Peoria. Thanks Pam

Terrific Woodland Retreat
This is a very comfortable and very clean Victorian house that backs up to a wooded nature preserve. I saw two wild turkeys my first day, peeking in the basement windows. Lots of outdoor entertainment space, and there is a beautiful screened porch as well. We listened to crickets at night and watched for deer every morning. So quiet, beautiful and peaceful! The kitchen is very well-appointed, with everything you need to cook a big meal. Very helpful and cheerful management by the owner. Thanks again, Pamela!

Unique and spacious
This is a hidden house on a treed hill in a residential neighborhood. Outstanding property. Comfortably secluded and interesting. A charming house with a great covered porch and outside patio. Perfect for a couple who in enjoy nature and privacy but also want to be close to town. The place was very clean and well appointed. We will come again.

Peaceful Visit
This charming home was the perfect setting for our visit to Peoria. The owner and her manager were very helpful, providing us with useful information on this historic house, local restaurants and other fun attractions. Peoria is an amazing town, located on the Illinois River. There are many things to see here and we will be back to watch those paddle-boats steam by. My wife and I were here to visit the town I was born in and this lovely house helped capture the feeling of home and family. I would highly recommend this property to anyone considering a visit this part of the country.

About the host

Hosted by Pamela Tarantino

Host profile image
This home has been a legacy for family gatherings. We are sharing it now to pass on "storybook traditions" to the next generations. We provide vintage storybooks like the Velveteen Rabbit, Curious George, The Little Prince, and The Harvard Classics Collection of Great Books. We also provide DVD and CD resources about faith, prayer, American heritage, and classic films. It is a perfect time time to make a list of your own "top ten" books or movies to share as a legacy to your loved ones.

My mother Charlotte played sacred hymns and kept stacks of sheet music close at hand. I hope some of the composers she loved will bring inspiration to you too. (CD's and lists for online listening at the property.)

Charlotte and I loved reading and listening to music together. We read the great books series aloud, and after reading, would search out films with the same titles, such as To Kill a Mockingbird and The Good Earth. The time we invested in reading great books together continues to give its reward. When I listen to Eric Satie, or reread Kahil GIbran's book, The Prophet, I recall my mother's beauty, and feel gratitude for the way our friendship was braided together with life-giving music and literature.

I am a retired teacher, but still work as a counseling consultant and retreat director. One photo shows a friend and I as we recall some of our childhood favorites! What are your favorite children's books? Oh, The Places You'll Go by Dr. Suess? Goodnight Moon? We hope you will reread your favorites and maybe discover some new ones to share with the children and grandchildren in your life.

The home allows you to step back in time and also make the most of your present day hours. Come here to dwell in the quiet and reflect upon the authors and composers who have brought meaning to your lives. We hope you will take time to discover the serenity of the woodland setting, and like us, find joy in the simple pleasures of life.

Why they chose this property

Why do they call this region the Heartland? Are there places still where people take time for bird watching? Is there a place where you can wind down, and get off the express trains, as the Little Prince would ask? Do fairies dwell in the quietest corners of the garden?

Is there time to let the tea brew or really taste the wine? What about taking time to copy down and prepare a favorite family recipe and write an old fashioned, handwritten letter?

My friend and greeter, Sue can provide a welcome basket of muffins or bakery items to help you settle in, if you request it ahead of time. Sue, Al, or Pamela can show you the grassy knoll above the home; this lot adjoins the park district trails, so if you are adventurous, try out a hike into the woods. (You may need to do some of your own trail blazing.) Deer bed down on this upper lot, so don't be surprised if they pause to greet you.

We are a close (1.3 miles) to Forrest Park Nature Center, 5809 N Forest Park Dr. (309-686-3360). If you are interested to learn more about woodland trails, visit the park office and get more information including park district trail maps.

We love Illinois River life; you have easy access to Poplar Lane Park, part of the Greater Peoria Canoe and Kayak Trail (Illinoisriverroad.org). It is a small public park, river front, just off of Galena Road, a .7 mile mile walk from 1601 E Terrace View Lane.

This property is a hideaway on a hill, surrounded by woodland calm. There must be something in our heritage about houses on a hill. We call it the Top House, as well as Story Book Retreat House. This property feels like a real home, because it is one . . . that may be the curious link that draws you here, to be at home while you see if your act will play in Peoria for a weekend, or maybe longer . . .

What makes this property unique

A leaded and stained glass windows, lace curtains, and high ceilings cause us to wonder what life was like when the home was built in 1907. Story Book House has been dedicated as a retreat house and sanctuary, so there is a warmth and ambience that is a result of being lovingly cared for. Kindness has been spoken here for more than one hundred years! If you are seeking a place to find serenity, as well as direction for important life decisions, this home may offer you the special welcome which comes from being well loved. You may want to purposely schedule a visit with the possibility of getting snowed in for a day or two!

The home has been used as a place for guests in transition. You may consider asking about an extended stay as you prepare for a job or retirement move, the closing of a home sale, or to allow you to take the time necessary to find the just right property to rent or buy. A few past guests have used 1601 as a second home, and a place they could enjoy while caring for aged family members.

The main bedroom is upstairs, and the extra double bed is in the basement.

Pastors, missionaries, and locals may use Story Book Retreat House as a place for rest and healing. We can introduce you to local ministries dedicated to prayer, restoration, and healing support.
