Our Annual Retreat

This was our fourth year staying at this incredible property, and once again, it exceeded all our expectations. Every year, our group looks forward to returning, and each time, it feels more like our home away from home. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with the same warmth and comfort that we've come to expect. Every corner of this home is designed to provide the perfect blend of relaxation and fun. Whether it's preparing meals in the spacious kitchen, enjoying games on the three-season room, lounging in the pool, or just lounging on the deck, there's something for everyone. The outdoor spaces are a particular highlight—perfect for early morning coffee or late-night stargazing. We also appreciate how well-equipped the house is with everything we could possibly need during our stay. The location is ideal for our group. Close enough to enjoy a quick drive yet secluded enough to provide the peace and tranquility we crave. Our group has grown closer with each visit, and this house plays a big part in that. It’s the kind of place where lasting memories are made. We’ve already marked our calendars for next year’s stay, and we can't wait to return. To the owners, thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us. It’s truly a special place, and we feel lucky to have found it. Here’s to many more years of laughter, relaxation, and friendship in this wonderful retreat. Until next year!

Summer with family

This funky old place was just right for our multigenerational get together in northern New England. Lots of bedrooms and nooks and crannies to get lost in. Pool keeps the young ins entertained. Close to classic swimming spots, ice cream, and an easy and totally rewarding summit of Mt Kearsage. Classic New England summer!

Antique Colonial

Great place for experiencing an authentic early American home. Please remove multitude of spiderwebs on main floor, trim high weeds, and air condition first floor as 90+ degree interior is challenging.

Our home away from home

This is our 2nd time staying at the 40 Gile Rd house for our annual Adult Weekend Getaway (Friendcation). After years of searching we have finally found the perfect place to laugh a little more, share in memories we will have never forget and of course eat (and maybe drink :)) way too much. Waiting another 365 days will be hard but we are all counting down the days until we can meet again at our home away from home. Thank you again for a wonderful weekend!!

Historic Adventure with Modern Amenities

ThIs 1860s house takes you back in time with modern comfort. Our grandchildren saw old construction but ate food prepared with new appliances and saw 40 acres of open space for wiffle ball games but swam in a modern inground pool. The linens and kitchen supplies were adequate. Only the bedrooms had air conditioners. The firepit was great. Our family seeks adventure and builds family memories. If you want total confort go to the sterile Hilton Inn. If you want new experiences come here for the open space and unique house. The property manager was very helpful. We enjoyed the tomatoes from the garden. A great time was had by all.

Wonderful escape for a large family

My extended family vacations together for a week each summer and this year stayed at this house in Franklin NH. The house was spacious enough to comfortably allow 10 adults and 5 children to relax, explore, and play. Rooms were clean, appliances well-maintained, and the outdoor grounds are expansive and practically demand exploration! The kids spent hours each day in the pool and playing hide and seek in the house’s nooks and crannies. At night, there’s no city light getting in the way of some great stargazing. The caretakers were consistently helpful and gracious. We were very happy to have stayed here and we thank John and his team for providing us with a memorable venue.

Amazing time!

The house and the stay was amazing. We loved having the pool and the lawn was in great shape for games. We spent a lot of time in it after golf and yard games since it was up around 90 degrees some days we stayed but the ACs saved us at night. The sunroom was a great place for us to all eat and hang out and we loved the uniqueness of the home. We would def go back!

an epic family reunion

This home fit our family (grandparents, 3 adult children with spouses, 5 grandchildren) perfectly, and allowed us to host the other 20 family members for a day. Good times had by all. Just remember to duck your head when walking through the house!

Beautiful historic home for our wedding weekend

My partner and I got married on Mt. Kearsarge and stayed at the house with friends and family for the weekend. The house accommodated a large group wonderfully with AC in almost all rooms and a nice big bedroom downstairs away from all the others where the one family with a baby could stay. We loved the hearth and old farm implements on display. The patio, fire pit, and pool were amazing with beautiful views and sunsets. Nice updated kitchen with two fridges and a dishwasher. The house is historic but had everything we needed. Our communication with the host started with some confusing moments but he made it right and was very generous. We will remember our stay here always!

A charming old farmhouse rich with history and great for large groups

My group rented the home for January, February and March. We spent every weekend at the house taking advantage of the large property and access to skiing at Ragged Mountain. The home is the ideal place for a large group who is looking to cook a lot of meals at the house. John recently replaced both the oven and refrigerator. We enjoyed many wonderful evenings enjoying the comfy sofas and chairs in front of the fire. The home is large enough that you can always find a quiet corner to read or play a card game, be it in the cozy library or study. History buffs will love investigating the history of this historic home. John is a very attentive host who was always responsive to any needs or requests.

Quirky barely adequate

The property has some charm, but is in poor repair. It's a bit of an antique and it is obvious that the rental is just to keep it afloat for the descendants who for whatever reason cannot part with their history. It is not very well updated, and although there are beds for a crowd, the bathrooms, common spaces and such do not lend themselves to a group over 6-8. If you are tall, wear a helmet or don't come. You will bump your head often. If you are over 200 lbs, you won't fit into any of the shower spaces but one. Don't bring young kids as the house is not child-safe. The pool was open uncovered mid-winter, waiting for an errant child to step through; the alcohol cupboard is on ground level and unlocked, and the fireplace is massive and open. The kitchen is small for a house entertaining up to 18 guests, and the storage space for groceries is pitifully limited to small drawers, and the limited countertops. The pantry is not much help in that area other than holding spare older appliances like the blender. Lighting in the house is also a problem. At night, it is dim most everywhere in the common spaces especially. No game-room for teens and only a small TV with poor sight-lines. For what you are asked to pay, the value in short, is not there. On the other hand, the area is quiet, the land spacious and holds adventure for certain ages. Oh, and did I mention that the house is drafty? One bedroom had the window AC still in place which provided nice cooling drafts in mid-winter. One zone never did really heat up aside from what came through the floor, but by keeping the fireplace going, it was tolerable. With the washer on one level and the dryer on another, it was difficult to manage the laundry. In sum, if you want quirky and are very tolerant, you can have an acceptable gathering here. But you can probably do much better for your money.

Not comfortable for a late fall visit. House is in need of updating. Not enough hot water for 6 people let alone 14 advertised. Kitchen needs improvement especially for large groups.

We made it work.

The property is a unique old farmhouse with lots of charm and a confusing layout. It is not very clean, and there are places with exposed wiring. The historical charm doesn't really excuse this. Beautiful location though.

Wonderful Family Vacation

Our family had a great time at this very spacious and private property. The adults and kids swam and splashed in the pool, had lunches and dinners in the sunroom and enjoyed walking around the grounds and playing lawn games. There are ample board games for a rainy evening for both adults and kids. We found the kitchen to be very well stocked, as during the week we were there all but two meals were cooked at the house. The owner was very responsive and easy to get in touch with. The property was just a great place overall to stay at with a lot of history that comes with it! Thank you John!!!

Great for large groups!

This property easily accommodated our large group for a family get together. The property has several areas (both inside and outside) for the whole family to hang out in, but also has several rooms available for people to escape to do some work or have some private time. John was a great host and very responsive.

Great large house with a lot of history. Part of the fun was reading and learning the history of the home and the ownership and genealogy. The home does have some age but nothing that one couldn't easily become accustomed to. I would recommend this home to large gatherings.

Great Location for our Large Group

This home boasted plenty of space inside and out for our group of 16. The fields surrounding the property were great for lawn games and having the pool to cool off in was amazing. Inside we did not feel cramped. During day and evening we could hang out in the sun room and at night we gathered around in the living room.

Wonderful stay at an amazing historic home!

We rented this wonderful historic home with friends for three months in order to be close to skiing at Ragged Mountain. Our stay was delightful! We spent hours after skiing sitting and playing games by the fire. Our kids enjoyed sledding on the property as well as exploring the woods. The home is perfect for accommodating large groups. The library and study were great places to curl up with a book or jump on a Zoom call. The owner of the property was extremely attentive to our needs or concerns. We can't wait to return!

John Gile purchased this property over ten years ago as it had been built by his ancestors in the early 1800s Since that time John has enjoyed sharing the home with his family and friends.

Why they chose this property

We purchased this home because it had been built by our great-great-great-great grand father in 1804. The Home stayed within our family until the early 1900's. We love this home as a place for family gatherings over holidays such as July 4th, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
