Great location, safe, spacious.
Everything we needed was provided. This reminded me of staying in my grandmother's house and I felt comfortable and it brought back memories of those days!! It's a feeling newness and perfection cannot bring!! Coffee on the sunporch is better than any 5 star hotel I've been to. You won't regret staying here. We hope to stay again.

Adorable property and kind hosts!
This property couldn’t be cuter and is as darling as it looks in the pictures! I stayed here for two weeks while in town for a horse show, and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Mark greeted me upon arrival to show me around - he was SO warm and friendly. The banana bread which greeted me as well ;-) was beyond delicious! I definitely recommend staying here if you have the opportunity!

A family birthday in Franklin
General's Retreat is a beautifully decorated cottage in the heart of Franklin. The owners, Damon and Mark have done a splendid job of showcasing art and antiques in a cozy and warm atmosphere that wraps you in a hug from the moment you arrive. I would highly recommend this home to anyone looking to explore all that Franklin has to offer. We celebrated a 92nd birthday there and would love to return at another time.

Great yard for dogs
This house is an oxymoron. It has great facilities to enjoy the outdoors with dogs (Being a long leash, as fence has openings. ). However, the house itself has antique furniture which is much better suited for short, thin people. It is beautiful, but not something you would want a dog to gnaw, so property is not well- suited to young dogs. Older, well-mannered dogs - no problem. We brought three dogs, two older and one young pup. Carpeting throughout is nice, but again, not as dog friendly as. Hard surface would be. House has all the amenities to make short, thin to average-sized people have a wonderful stay. Beautiful screened porch, living room, bedrooms, etc. Wonderful, gracious hosts. Big yard, lots of outdoor seating and tables, BBQ grill. There is an adjoining unit, perfect for traveling for a family reunion. Dog friendly for mature, well behaved dogs. Not so much for pups.

Great place for a family reunion.
My wife and I along with my daughter and my Mom were able to travel from VA and spend several days visiting with two of our older sons that now work in TN and GA. The Generals Retreat was the perfect place to stay. The kitchen allowed us to cook several meals for the six of us. The dining room, living room, porch and yard gave us several opportunities to talk, play games and catch up with each other. The location gave us a chance to easily see Franklin and to have access to an incredible park area for running. The hosts spoke with us several times to see if we needed anything. They also warned us of a city-wide fun run that would shut down several streets. Their concern for us allowed us to leave early and avoid a huge delay in our departure for home. We plan to stay here again on our next visit and encourage you to stay here as well.

Stepping back in time
Such a serene place . Like stepping back in time when one drives down the driveway, and passes the owners house that I called Gone with the Wind house . The whole area is full of history and staying in the Generals Quarters, with its beautiful shuttered dining room and sunroom off the main bedroom just added to the enjoyment of our stay. The owners were very friendly and hospitable. I would definitely recommend this cottage to everyone.

Wanted to enjoy our stay, but....
I booked this property for a weekend getaway with my mom. We are simple, down to earth country women who don't require a lot. We were looking for a clean, quiet place to relax. While this property was well stocked (except for toilet paper--there was only one roll) and the beds were comfortable, overall, it appeared to be sadly neglected. There was dust and cobwebs around the tops of almost all the lampshades. The door threshold from the twin bedroom onto the patio was covered in dirt, leaves, bugs and cobwebs and appeared not to have been cleaned in ages. When the large closet in this bedroom was opened, it was found to contain the HVAC system and there were large piles of dirt and dust (enough to fill up several dust pans) covering the floor. We had looked forward to sitting on the screened porch, but the floor was covered with leaves and the furniture needed a good cleaning. The outdoor furniture also needed a good cleaning, a downspout was off the side of the house and the foundation plantings were full of weeds. The plumbing is in serious need of repair. A sign on top of the comode indicated the plumbing was old. The sign stated to hold down the handle for several seconds until the comode flushed and not to try to reflush until the bowl refilled. While we followed these instructions, we had difficulty ever getting the comode to completely flush the first night we were there. Finally, at about 5 am, my 80 year old mom took the cover off the tank and figured out there was a button on top of the tank that you could push down and the comode would flush perfectly. Since we were able to fix the problem on our own, I didn't see the need to call the owners, but the issue does need to get resolved and I can't imagine we were the first guests to have this problem. We noticed that there were several flashlights in the house and a sign indicated that there were often power outages. We did experience two of these, and while they lasted only a few minutes each, they required resetting clocks and tvs in the house. This was a bit unnerving, as they happened without reason (no storm, nothing extra turned on or plugged in)--making us wonder if this was a wiring problem in the house. Also, this house is connected to a small apartment and apparently they share an HVAC system--everytime the neighbors in the apartment made coffee or cooked you could smell it in the twin bedroom. We wanted to love this place, but overall it had the look of being neglected.

About the host

Hosted by Damon Rogers

Host profile image
Welcome! We are Damon and Mark Rogers, the grateful custodians of Damon's family home where we retired in 2000 after 30 years of Navy life. Mark is a retired Naval Officer, and we have been very fortunate to have lived and travelled all over the world.

The family home was built in 1919 and Generals Retreat and Captains Quarters (VRBO Listing #496791), two of our rental properties located behind the Big House, were originally built in 1970 as a guest home and office suite.

Much of the surroundings you'll see when staying at one of our vacation rentals in Franklin have been gradually collected during our Navy years and represent our strong Southern heritage and love of antiques.

Why they chose this property

Enjoy 1600+ square feet of historic elegance with gorgeous family antiques and art adorning the walls and shelves of our properties.

Entertaining is a breeze in the fully stocked kitchen with all of the cooking, serving utensils, stoneware dishes, glasses, and all entertaining necessities for up to 8. Plantation Shutters abound on three sides in the classically furnished separate the dining room that is appointed with an antique secretary, antique bar/serving area, and cherry antique pedestal dining table.

Cozy up in front of the beautiful mantled wood burning fireplace in the living room (wood provided). The master bedroom offers a reproduction Iron King bed, gorgeous & crisp linens, a walk in closet, and Queen Anne desk.

Just outside the master bedroom is an all Wicker-furnished private screened in porch. Step from either the screened-in porch or 2nd bedroom onto the outside patio with ample seating and umbrella table for outdoor dining. Take advantage of the outdoor gas grill with utensils, or sit around the portable fire pit with wood provided.

The second bedroom offers antique four poster twin beds and a built-in library loaded with books, board and card games, and movies. Separate laundry room adjacent to second bedroom plus a dressing room/make up area.

Linens and towels for kitchen are provided, as well as laundry and dishwasher supplies. The tiled bathroom has shower, ample thirsty towels, hair dryer and basic all-natural toiletries.

What makes this property unique

This charming guest home is situated at the back of the property of our original 1919 historic home, Stone Oaks. Step inside and you will feel right at home. The cherished family heirlooms - both furniture and art - each have their own story to tell. The plantation shutters throughout give homage to the Charleston, SC heritage and afford gorgeous views from throughout the home.

The screened-in porch and outdoor patio overlook a 3-board fenced side yard where you can enjoy games of badminton or cornhole, or simply sit in the yard in Damon's grandmother's glider and chairs under the oldest Elm Tree in Williamson County.

We believe that this property is the best kept secret in Franklin and are delighted to share it with you. This guest home was built as a home and has all the amenities of a bigger house on a smaller scale.

This property sleeps 4 but adjacent to Generals Retreat is Captains Quarters (VRBO Listing #496791), which sleeps 2, and both can be booked for a total of 6 people.
