This charming 1910 cottage in Asheville's historic Montford neighborhood was completely renovated and won the prestigious Griffin Award for historic preservation. The cottage retains its historic charm with original fireplace, doors, and woodwork. The kitchen has all the modern appliances you'd expect. In summer, enjoy A/C and fenced backyard with patio. In winter, enjoy the cozy fireplace.

Location is one of our cottage's greatest assets. Leave your car at the cottage and explore Asheville's vibrant downtown. We are within a 10-minute walk to the heart of downtown Asheville's many locally owned restaurants. Walk to the Friday night drum circle, downtown after-five concerts, the library, or have glass of wine at Sante Wine Bar in the Arcade.

Fully furnished, including all utilities, wi-fi, extended cable TV, internet, and laundry.

The cottage sits at the end of a quiet street. Walk, bike, or jog through the beautiful and historic Montford neighborhood. The Greenway is only blocks away.

Enjoy an evening sitting on the front porch, reading in front of the fireplace, or grilling on the patio in the fenced-in backyard. The cozy cottage is 865 sq ft and has all the amenities you'd expect. The master bedroom has flat-screened tv with large closet and guest bedroom has queen bed, small walk-in closet and office set up with printer/scanner. The cottage is in a perfect location to explore downtown Asheville, dozens of great independent restaurants, many art galleries, and nearby River Arts district. We have been named Beer City for several years because of the notable craft breweries, some within walking distance.

Owners can provide you with information on running or walking trails in the neighborhood and the surrounding mountains.

In the cottage, there's an extensive information booklet containing a list of our favorite downtown restaurants, and the many great tourist attractions, many within walking distance or a short drive.

Need to work? The second bedroom is set up with wireless internet, printer, work desk and lounge chair.

The fenced backyard has a small patio with gas grill.

Please call with any questions about the area or for open dates! Going on three years, the cottage has booked quickly for the entire year, so it's best to inquire EARLY.

Wonderful Stay

This was our second trip to Asheville and we were very pleased with the Short St property. It’s easy walking distance to downtown and several grocery stores. The neighborhood is quiet and beautiful with wonderful walking areas for our four-legged companions. The house is comfortable and clean. Unfortunately, our trip ended with hurricane Helene and Vicki made great efforts to ensure we were safe. She’s an excellent host.

Cheerful, comfortable house in great location

We loved staying in this charming house with its roomy, well-equipped kitchen overlooking the fenced-in backyard patio and garden. Although small, the house easily accommodated 2 adult family members who joined us for a few nights during our stay. Vicki is a responsive, helpful host.

Possibly the best location close to downtown

We really enjoyed our stay at Vicki's place. For starters, the neighborhood is wonderful, just far enough away from the main roads for peace and quiet, but only a 10-15 minute walk from almost everywhere downtown. The neighbors are also warm and friendly and actually seemed to go out of their way to welcome us, which is rare for a vacation rental. The house itself was the perfect size for my wife and I, plus our 2 dogs. The A/C worked exceptionally well, and the house was fully stocked with everything we could need and more. Vicki was a great host - excellent communication and very responsive. We will definitely visit again if we don't end up moving to the neighborhood permanently!

Cozy cottage in a great location

Communication with Vicki was wonderful and the check-in/check-out process was easy and seamless. The property is very close to downtown which was great for our stay, and also is in close proximity to Montford restaurants like All Day Darling and NineMile. Highly recommend if you’re looking to travel to Asheville!

Great little cottage in stellar location!

This is a super charming little cottage. It is nicely appointed and is perfectly located. Vicki is an amazing host and recommended lots of fun places to visit. Merle (my dog) loved being able to hang out in the backyard and there is a great little park around the corner. The fireplace made it super cozy during my January visit. The kitchen was great for cooking and there are a bunch of options for groceries nearby. The beds are super comfortable and the bathroom is super cute. I would stay here again in a heartbeat and highly recommend this charming Historic Montford Cottage.

October Adventure

We, myself and my trusty dog Heath, had a great Asheville visit. Although the weather was variable we did get to see the leaves change and took many wonderful walks in the neighborhood and downtown. The cottage was very clean and was larger than I envisioned. The decor was stylish but very comfortable. The art was fun and interesting to explore. My weekend guests were very pleased as well. The kitchen was fully equipped, even beyond expectations. I needed a grater to make soup, sure enough I found one there. There was no need to meet the host because she was so organized. The cottage was well prepared and everything was in good working order for our entire stay. Privacy was fully respected as well. I would definitely stay here again.

This is the Spot

This house has the benefit of location to downtown, great neighborhood and a place to relax. The house is well appointed with all amenities plus a great backyard for relaxing and grilling. The large 2 bedrooms allow for room to spread out. It is a close walk to Grove Park District and several restaurants within a 5 min. walk. There is no better place to stay. The owner is wonderful to work with and is responsive with any needs.

Sweet, charming, great location

Our stay here was amazing. It had everything we needed, including a fenced in backyard and even water bowls for our dogs. It is in a great neighborhood and very close to downtown Asheville. The owner Vicki was so helpful and very accommodating to our crazy schedule. We were building a new home and the completion date kept changing, but Vicki was so sweet in letting us stay until our new home was completed. She had great recommendations and was just so warm and caring. I would highly recommend staying here if you get the chance. You'll feel safe and comfortable here. She checked in on us when there was snow and bad weather, making sure we had everything we needed. She provides everything you'll need at the house and has provided so many nice little touches throughout. I will easily give this home and the owners five stars. Also, if you've never been to Asheville, its a great city to visit. We love it there. Vicki's home will be our home away from home when we go to visit Asheville.

Comfortable and convenient

This was the second consecutive year my wife and I have stayed at Vickie’s. We love our time there and heartily recommend it. The house is attractively decorated and furnished and the beds are quite comfortable. We love the neighborhood and neighbors and really appreciate how convenient to town it is so we just walk to town for most things. Hank and Vickie are very helpful for any problems. The house has a very cozy feel to it and the kitchen is well furnished. We plan to return next year.

A Cozy, Comfortable, Asheville Christmas

My husband and I spent the month of December in Asheville where our daughter and son-in-law reside in a studio apartment. (No room in their inn for Ma & Pa) This cottage/bungalow met our every need! It is adorably quaint yet has every modern convenience we needed. A few highlights for us were the comfy beds, big walk-in closets, spacious and warm bathroom, nice laundry facilities, cable TV with extended channels, great kitchen, and a fenced yard. The location is awesome! The Montford neighborhood is charming and interesting to walk through. The neighbors are friendly and helpful. It was great to be able to walk to grocery stores, restaurants, the Visitor Center, and everything downtown. One of our favorite places was a little cafe one block from "home" called Tod's Tasties on Montford Ave. The food is delicious and local. We loved being able to hear the Bells of the Basilica of St. Lawrence as well as our tour of this historic church. It added so much to our Christmas spirit. The owners, Vicki and Hank, were friendly and very attentive to our questions, concerns, and comfort. We couldn't have asked for a better hospitality. We would recommend this cottage/bungalow to anyone and hope to return someday.

cozy and comfortable

The house was so comfortable for the four of us, and its proximity to all that the city has to offer could not have been any better. We certainly hope to visit Asheville again, and when we do, the first thing we will do is to check on the availability of Short Street!

Great Neighborhood

This cottage can't be beat. The neighborhood is within an easy 5-10 min. walk to downtown and the neighbors are very friendly. This is a comfortable home base for all you might do in Asheville. The private backyard is unique for homes in the area and it is perfect for grilling and enjoying morning coffee. Also, the home is pet friendly and a fenced yard is a benefit. The bedrooms are both large and have great closets. The beds are comfortable and an extra TV in one of the rooms is a plus. Overall, this is a great place and Vicky is always great to work wth.

Perfect Location :>)

The cottage proved true to the photos and description especially the EXCELLENT location! The cottage is so centrally located and we were able to walk downtown and take day trips and make memories that will last a lifetime. The owner was extremely easy to work with and had the cottage all set up as expected. The neighborhood is amazing and we enjoyed spending time admiring the beautiful homes and gorgeous flowers in the Spring. We especially enjoyed the warm feel of the home and it had everything we needed to get some work done in between our day trips around the area. We look forward to our next trip here!

Better than perfect

Our two months in the cottage were better than perfect. The location is ideal with or without a car. We had one, and found that we could hop on the freeway and get to places near and far with minimal effort, but we never heard freeway noise from the cottage. Walking our dog in the neighborhood was a great way to get to know Montford and also to meet other dog owners. The cottage is within walking distance to Trader Joe’s and Harris Teeter. It’s cozy and comfortable, and very well equipped. Very new washer and dryer, and very fast internet. We ate most meals in and the kitchen equipment met all our needs. We used the gas fireplace a few times in January, nice. Highlights of our stay were Buxton Hall BQ, Highland Brewery (and many others), much local music, and time spent at the public library. Vicki and Hank were very responsive (by text message) when we had questions. We will definitely stay here again if it’s available next time we visit Asheville.

Little gem in perfect location

For our fifth trip to Asheville, and the fourth property in which we’ve stayed, my wife found this little gem on Short Street for the two of us and our Shih Tzu. While the photos and property description accurately represent the functional layout and comfortable furnishings, the true pleasure of staying here lies in this historic Montford neighborhood itself. Walking our dog, we met a number of friendly and interesting people with whom we later shared a glass of wine and conversation on several occasions. Its location is perfect. The cottage is just a short walk to downtown Asheville, a center of culinary, musical and other cultural activity. Having rented during the late fall, it was nice it was to return to the cottage after an evening out and relax in the living room with the warm glow of a gas fireplace to remove the chill. Inside the cottage, everything we needed was at our fingertips. Vicki helped make our stay on Short Street a most enjoyable experience and we’ll return there often!

Right at Home

This is a lovely small cottage that welcomed me and my little dogs for five weeks in March and early April. It has everything one would want, plus the location is terrific and one can walk downtown and hear the bells of the Basilica. It's very close to grocery stores, a walking trail, access to highways and is in the historic district, which is lovely to walk through. While it was a bit too cool to sit outside many days, in warmer weather one could enjoy a small fenced back yard and front porch. The only negative was not with the house itself, but that two homes were being built close by, which made parking a bit more difficult (street parking only) and added to the noise factor. Both should be completed soon, though, and the neighborhood will revert to an ideal urban location with suburban amenities. Vicki, the owner, was gracious and checked to make sure everything was as it should be during my stay.

Perfect cottage for getting to know Asheville

We just returned from a month-long stay in this lovely cottage. It's the perfect spot from which to explore Asheville - so conveniently located in a lovely quiet neighborhood within walking distance of downtown and easy access to the main highways. The cottage was spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated and very well appointed with everything you need to feel right at home. During part of our stay the weather was cold and snowy but we were always warm and comfortable, and we really enjoyed the gas fireplace at the touch of a button. Vicki was a joy to work with - always friendly, responsive to our questions, and quick to help. She made the process of renting so easy, and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend this cottage to anyone who wants to explore Asheville while "living like a local".

Cottage in Montford

Spending spring and summer in Asheville is fabulous! Also fall is fabulous too! The weather is wonderful and the scenery is beyond comparison. I have also been there at Christmas, and Christmas at Biltmore is just "over the top." Of course it is at any time of the year. When you visit Biltmore, I strongly recommend renting the audio guided tour that is available. Very reasonable cost for the valuable information you get while touring the house. Otherwise you are just looking and really don't know the info. My yellow lab and I enjoyed walks in the neighborhood, visiting the "dog park" and I enjoyed having a wonderful fenced backyard for him. Asheville (as well as nearby towns) has so much to offer in theater, music, art, delicious food, and the architecture of the city. I highly recommend the trolley tour at the beginning of a stay. It gives wonderful history and overall view of the city and its points of interest. The cottage itself is just precious! The house is clean, cozy, and close to downtown and the visitors center. The owner provides a book with menus from many of the restaurants and other helpful information. I highly recommend this cottage and plan to return myself!

Historic neighborhood cottage and only steps from downtown

We can't say enough about this wonderful home close to downtown. This is our second trip to this home, and we will stay again next year. The neighborhood is welcoming and very walkable for families with or without pets. The home is spotless and the pictures are accurate. Vicky was very easy to work with and always available by phone or email. Large bedrooms and closets, full size kitchen, and anything you might need make this a comfortable stay. You are able to walk downtown in a few minutes and grocery stores are 2 min. in the car. Tod's Diner is on the corner for a quick meal or a bowl of tater tots. This is the place to stay in Asheville.

Host profile image
We have wanted to live in Asheville since our youth because of its natural beauty and find it to be a cultual mecca. We feel so fortunate to finally have the opportunity to be here.

Why they chose this property

Montford is such a lovely, safe and convenient neighborhood. This historic home has so much charm and the walkability throughout the neighborhood and downtown is unbeatable. Within 10 minute walk: Grove Arcade, St. Stephen's Basillica--national landmark, Friday night drum circle in Prichard Park, downtown art studios, River Arts District, and dozens of art-deco downtown buildings. Asheville's cozy downtown--with many cafes and restaurants--has been called 'The Paris of the South.' The Montford Historic District is rated one of North Carolina's top historic district by This Old House magazine! Within a two-mile drive you'll arrive at Biltmore Estate and the Blue Ridge Parkway with dozens of great hiking trails and nature's beauty.

What makes this property unique

The cottage is clean, comfortable, and set up for a pleasant stay. Our guests have enjoyed the short walk to downtown. Most leave their car at the cottage and walk to dozens of local cafes and restaurants. The fenced backyard and patio offer privacy for reading or outdoor cooking. Montford is a beautiful, safe neighborhood to walk, bike, or run. Nearby are the Greenway, parks, tennis courts, and Montford Recreation Center. The Asheville Chamber of Commerce is three blocks away; here you can find lots of local information, including the Trolley Tour for Asheville. Judy, a recent guest for two months, told us, 'Why would I want to stay anywhere else in Asheville.' She just relocated to Montford.
