About this property

Private w/14er Views. Large New Hot Tub. Stream. Borders USFS 3 sides. Wildlife.

The towering trees that stand sentinel over the grassy meadow can tell the story of the Chalk Creek stagecoach stopping to water the weary horses in the Wilsey ditch while the tenacious riders are talking of how nice it would be to have a comfortable cabin just on the edge of this meadow where you could watch the bighorn sheep traverse down the mountain to graze.

Fast forward to 2024. That same stagecoach road is now a driveway. The same ditch runs through the property. The same grassy meadow is still the salad bowl for bighorn sheep and other wildlife. But now there is the rider's dream cabin, BigHorn On The Wilsey. A 1300 SF custom-built immaculate, well-insulated, 3 BR, 2 BA home. Soothing designer colors on the walls bring the outside in. Go to any window and it becomes a frame for the beauty of nature ~ tall pine trees, quaking aspen, willows, outstanding 14er mountain views, and if you are lucky a bighorn sheep, moose, or bobcat. The shady front porch is the place to relax on a hot summer day. A leisurely walk down the drive yields a view of the Wilsey ditch and grassy meadows. A variety of wildlife drink from the ditch. The bighorn sheep viewing meadow is adjacent to the property. While the rest of us park our vehicles and hope to see the bighorn sheep in the few moments we are there, you have a front row seat to the mountain they climb in order to reach the meadow. The cabin and its 2 acres are surround on 3 sides by USFS/State land. No neighbors in sight. No roads in sight. No noise. Clear starry skies. 100% nature. This is Colorado perfect.

Occupancy: Six (6); One King bed; One Queen bed; One Twin bed with One Twin Trundle in open loft sleeping area, 1 roll away main floor; 2 Full Bathrooms with Bathtub/Shower Combo (One upper, One main); luxurious designer bedding and linens; designer wares fully stocked in kitchen; Free WIFI; HDTV flat screen TV with DirecTV satellite channels and Bose speakers; Designer propane stove in Great Room; Full size Washer and Dryer; Ample closets/storage; new outdoor grill; in-ground fire pit; horseshoe pit. Duallys and trailers not advised: no turnaround; narrow & curved driveway.

BigHorn On The Wilsey is your private (and convenient) base for mass exploration; world-renowned white-water rafting or fishing on the Arkansas River, soaking in Mt. Princeton Hot Springs, wildlife viewing on the property, star-gazing the night sky, walking trails (CDOT and Colorado Trail), hiking 14ers, touring ghost towns (St. Elmo, Hancock, Tincup) and other historic sites, taking your Jeep up the 4x4 trails (complete maps inside cabin), gem and mineral collecting on Mt. Antero and Ruby Mountain, fishing nearby lakes, snowshoeing, downhill skiing at Monarch, Nordic skiing, sledding, composing your memoir, reconnecting with loved ones, quiet reflection, and absolute relaxation.

Remarkable Stay
Possibly my favorite vrbo stay I can remember. The cabin is secluded, has great views and is close to several interesting sites: St. Elmo ghost town, Mt. Princeton Hot Springs, Cascasde falls and Agnes Veille falls to name a few. The property itself was clean, comfortable and well stocked. We enjoyed eating breakfast outside on the picnic table, sitting on the breezy patio in the evening, grilling dinner and most of all sitting in the hot tub under the starry sky.

Total privacy
This property was absolutely amazing. The privacy and coziness made this trip even better. The beds are ridiculously comfortable and that couch was just as cozy. The directions were clear and the check in process was smooth and I would not hesitate to stay here again.

Charming cabin on gorgeous property
We spent two nights at Jean's cabin with our family (6, 8). The location is perfect for rafting the Arkansas and hiking all around the area - including two lovely hikes a mile down the road. The backyard canyons are just stunning and we enjoyed the hot tub watching the night sky get filled with stars. Kitchen was stocked and gas grill clean and ready to use. We hope to return!

Secluded meadow
We loved this cabin and its surroundings. It was clean and comfortable. The beds are very comfortable. It had all the provisions that we needed and more. Hikes were convenient. We visited the hot springs and the trout hatchery and Buena Vista. We saw a lot of wildlife out our back door with beautiful mountain views. It was a comfortable size for the 3 of us.

Perfect family getaway!
The cabin was the perfect place to spend our family vacation! The view and location was just incredible. Our kids (7, 5, 2) enjoyed exploring the woods nearby & making smores on the fire pit in the evenings. The hot tub was also perfect after a long day of exploring. House had everything we needed & beds were nice and comfy. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Everything is perfect about this property
This was our second stay and it was as wonderful as the first! The secluded location with Mt. Antero and Mt. Princeton as your only neighbors is perfect! The stars we viewed from the hot tub were unlike any we have ever seen. The cabin itself is clean and well-appointed. The kitchen has every possible appliance and cooking need imaginable. The bed and pillows are comfortable and the towels are soft. The cabin is much roomier on the inside than it looks from the outside. We enjoyed walking the back property, listening to the rushing stream and hearing the bird calls each day. This place is exactly what is listed and more. I hesitate to say too many great things about it, for fear of it being booked next year when we return!

Amazing views!
This was the perfect vacation home for our family of four. Kids loved exploring the property. We used the hot tub, grill, and fire pit. Good hiking trails and geocaches close to the cabin. So much to explore close by that we stayed in the area the whole time and never even went to town.

Cozy Colorado
The location of this cabin is incredible. It’s nestled in between two mountain ridges, and the sunrises every morning were beautiful. We had deer in the yard in the evenings, and the stars at night were amazing because there is no light pollution in this small community. The cabin itself is very cozy and clean. The property manager, Jean, was great all throughout the rental process. If you’re looking for something a little off the beaten path, this is a great option.

I have always enjoyed the Nathrop area, specifically Chalk Creek. Jean’s cabin is in an ideal spot, very private and picturesque. Right beside the wildlife viewing area, we saw plenty of critters! The hot tub is a huge bonus, especially for star gazing. We will certainly be back!

Real privacy in a beautiful setting
This cabin is situated on a spectacular spot in Chalk Creek Canyon, with seemingly endless acres of National Forest land out the back, which provides absolute privacy and beauty in the rear of the cabin where the hot tub is. The cabin is well stocked with kitchen equipment. The furniture seems to have been upgraded from what is shown in the photos, and the living and dining areas are very comfortable. The two bedrooms we stayed in upstairs were likewise quite comfortable. The hot tub appeared clean and well-maintained; towels were provided. It was too windy for a fire but the outdoor fire pit was a nice place to sit and enjoy the view of Mt Antero in adirondack chairs made of skis. Directions and check-in were simple. We didn't have any reason to contact the house manager with questions, but she welcomed us by text after we arrived. Overall, we loved our stay and would definitely return.

About the host

Hosted by Jean

Host profile image
Originally from the Midwest, my husband and I moved to Colorado because of our love of the mountains. We have a young son now and especially would like to instill in him the importance of nature; ultimately, we try to spend as much time outdoors as possible.

Why they chose this property

We enjoy white-water rafting, jeep and ATV trails, soaking in natural hot springs, hiking 14ers, exploring historical areas, gem collecting, wildlife viewing, and peace of nature. BigHorn On The Wilsey is the perfect home base for all activities.

What makes this property unique

BigHorn On The Wilsey is unlike any other property in the area. The cabin is surrounded by USFS/State Land on three sides, no roads or other structures/homes in sight, has direct access to walking and hiking trails, and views of unobstructed mountains and wildlife from any window. The waterfalls can be heard from the cabin, and at night, all the stars shine with zero light noise and a feeling of being out in the middle of the wilderness although the cabin is only a few miles from the closest convenience.
