About this property

Family cabin on private lake to enjoy fishing, hiking, nature and much more!

One of the first things you will notice on entering the Cabin are the windows all along one side, which give gorgeous views of the lake. There is also a sliding glass door leading to a patio with a picnic table and a gas grill. On the other side of the Cabin are two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and the other with a double, which each have a closet. The spacious bathroom which includes a walk-in shower is next to the bedrooms. A full kitchen with refrigerator, stove, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, dishes, pots & pans and utensils, along with dining and living areas are in the center of the Cabin.

This Cabin has an electrical solar system which makes it completely off grid. The stove and refrigerator are powered by propane fuel, and there are propane lights in every room.

In addition to the gas grill outside, a fire pit is in the yard with a supply of firewood to roast hot dogs, marshmallows, hobo pies and s’mores, or to just sit, relax and enjoy the ambience!

August stay on the lake
This is a quiet serene place to unplug and relax. The cabin and property is lovingly cared for and private. This is an impressive off-grid experience that will leave you wanting for nothing. Fresh linen and towels, hot showers, electric light and appliances and propane stove/oven and refrigerator all tucked away on a secluded lake.

Peace and relaxation
If you are looking to disconnect for a while from this busy world we live in, this is the place to go. Fishing, wildlife, and quiet. This place was immaculate upon our arrival and the owners showed us around and assured us that if there was anything we needed, they were just a call away. We didn't need anything. Thanks Tom and Becky. This was our best stay in the 10+ years we have been using VRBO. Keep it up. This is something special you have going here. God bless.

Peace and Quiet
Cabin was wonderful. We had a great time unplugging away from it all. Just what we were looking for. Cabin was perfect, very clean, well stocked, quiet with beautiful views. Saw lots of wildlife, hiked, fished, read, and watch the sun come up over the lake every morning. Tom was a great host. Looking forward to going back. Kirk & Cathy

Great experience. Nice quiet relaxing time away from all but close enough to town to grab a bite or pick up something we forgot. Was very well supplied with all the things we need. Great host, could not have ask for a better place to relax and have some fun.

Quiet Fishing Getaway
Really great stay on Upper Holmes Lake! The cottage was perfect and the fishing was fantastic. The largemouth bass were the biggest we’ve ever caught! If you’re looking for a quiet off grid experience with views you’ll remember for a long time, this is the place for you!

Great vacation
Amazing cabin for your family vacation, hunting, fishing, swimming and/or sightseeing. The cabin is sparkling clean and fully equipped with linens, towels, kitchen cookware, paper towels etc; all the amenities you have at your own home. Everything is new. Did I mention private lake with paddle and fishing boats? Pictures don’t do justice to the beauty of this place. Simply beautiful and peaceful.

Nature's Healing
David and Nancy Young have a haven of heaven. The place is immaculate and well provisioned and the owners are gracious and most helpful. We so enjoyed it (my wife Corinne, me, brother Tom and his wife Kathy). Extremely convenient to Crystal Falls and the Channing area where we grew up. We took a field trip to Houghton early one morning for a surprise breakfast of pannukakku (Finnish baked custard pancakes with warm raspberry sauce) at the Suomi Restaurant in honor of Kathy's Finnish heritage. Beautiful drive. This is the area where Travis and Angel hung out and did some of their detective work in the crime fiction novels Blood Ice and Lizard Eyes by Chick LaPointe (available on Amazon). This was a wonderful respite on a gorgeous lake. We laughed, enjoyed nature, got reacquainted with our native cuisine and saw much wildlife including deer, loons, turkeys, a hippopotamus (not really) and a grumpy old porcupine waddling on the road. We would return in a heartbeat to this off-the-grid rest from the news and the tired old world. Our batteries are charged and our minds are basking in serenity. Thank you, Nancy and David for creating this peaceful oasis. Chick and Corinne LaPointe, Tallahassee, Florida (both born in Iron Mountain)

Wild Paradise
What an incredible locale! This cabin is located on a private lake with incredible sunrises and sunsets. We've stayed here three times now and each time is an improvement upon the previous one. Our last trip we were pleased to discover that "the Lodge" is outfitted with a self-sustaining solar power system that runs the cabin with full electricity both day and night. What an incredible enhancement for this secluded retreat. Every minute in this area can yield new sights and adventures. Whether it's catching a trophy walleye it listening to the wolves howl in the evening, this place will offer the most relaxing experience of a lifetime. We will definitely be back!

Beautiful Getaway
We had a terrific week on this beautiful lake in completely updated cabin with wonderful accommodations. Extremely private and quiet location perfect for complete relaxation. Had all the amenities needed to be comfortable. Plenty of options for hiking and we had the entire lake available for fishing without any other people on the lake. Our hosts were the most accommodating and friendly that we have ever met. They were genuinely interested in make my sure our stay was enjoyable and comfortable. They were available if we needed anything and were very generous in their time to share some wonderful experiences. We can't wait to return in the future.

Great place for a family get-away
After reading so many positive reviews, we booked this amazing cabin for our summer family get-away. We have 10 year-old twins, and wanted a place away from it all but not too far away, with a variety of recreational activities. This was the perfect place for us. The cabin is beautiful, and has been completely redone. All new woodwork and fixtures through the cabin make this a clean and comfortable place to stay. There is a generator only for use as needed, and we loved the simple nature of the propane lamps in every room. It made it even more cozy as we played games and read our books each night. The lake is so clean and pristine. We went out in either the row boat or canoe every day. The fishing is amazing, and so is the swimming. The kids played around in the sand bottom beach area for a few hours each day. There are only a couple of other cabins on the 140 acre lake, and the others are infrequently used as far as we can tell. We saw only a couple other people early in the week and other than that we had the entire lake to ourselves. Though this cabin is quite remote with abundant wildlife, it is only a 10 minute drive from Crystal Falls, which has a grocery store, bait shop, and a couple restaurants. This cabin is also not far from Iron River and Iron Mountain, and is perfectly placed for a day trip to the Porcupine Mountains or Pictured Rocks. Lastly, the owners of this beautiful place are great people. They were so friendly and helpful, and made sure we had absolutely everything we needed during our stay. We hope to return to this little gem every summer.

Awesome UP Adventure
We stayed at the Holmes cabin for a week this June 2015. We put in a lot of time and energy to find the perfect place for our first "pre-retirement" experiment. The reviews are what sold us and we were not disappointed. This place had everything we were looking for. Peace and quiet, privacy and the opportunity to experience the UP atmosphere and hospitality. This place was just beautiful, very clean and the cabin was just the perfect size for the two of us. The generator worked flawlessly, when we needed it. So off the grid yes, roughing it, no way! We too were visited by the loons, whippoorwills and other beautiful songbirds. Other wildlife that showed themselves included a wolf swimming across the water and a doe that walked right into the yard off the lake. A couple mornings with light fog on the water, beautiful sunrises and amazing colorful postcard sunsets and breathtaking scenery both day and night. We were lucky to be present when the train sounded its whistle and crossed the trestle. The fishing was awesome. We caught bluegill, pike, perch and bass. Most every cast brought up a great catch. There's nothing like a fresh fish fry to celebrate success on the water! The town is close with very friendly people. Crystal Falls being centrally located was the halfway mark for us to take day trips to The Porcupine Mountains, Lake in the Clouds, Iron River, Copper Harbor and the other many scenic drives. We definitely would love to come back to complete a Fall tour. Our Hosts made sure our stay was everything we were looking for and it was and more. Definitely a diamond in the not so rough!

Amazing Vacation
We stayed at the house on Homes Lake in August 2014. It was amazing. Private, quiet and peaceful. Before leaving we had already decided on going back in 2015. It is a great place, very clean. Fishing on the lake was awesome - there wasn't a time we went out when we didn't catch something.

Great outdoor get away with good fishing
This was maybe the best vacation ever. The cabin and location we stayed was very remote, not to mention, peaceful and quiet. The fishing was great. In most cases first cast and you had a fish on. The large-mouth bass were very active on top water lures, and the northern pike were just as aggressive. Some 12 inch bluegills were a treat. The best part was that the whole 140 acre lake was all ours to fish, most of the time. Only saw one other boat on the last day. The cabin we stayed in was very clean and well maintained with most everything needed for living and cooking. The owners were very supportive of any needs we mentioned, they were quickly able to help us out. We will be returning. Thanks guys for all you did.

Highly Recommended
My family and I stayed at the Upper Holmes lake cabin in July and had a great time!! It is very obvious that the owner's take great pride in ownership of this place. The cabin has been completely renovated and the woodwork is absolutely gorgeous. The owner's were very helpful and attentive to any questions or needs we may have had. They are extremely nice and friendly people. It was a pleasure to meet them. You can't beat the view from the cabin. Looking out the windows of the back of the cabin there is a beautiful view of the lake. We saw loons floating around and the resident eagle flying over. We also liked the fact that the place was "off the grid". This way our kids who are 9 and 12, had to find something to do other than play on the computer or watch tv. We played board games, explored the property or they paddled around the lake in one of the boats or the canoe that is supplied. Don't let the term "off the grid" fool you. While there was no internet or tv, there was still running water, shower, flushing toilet and lights if you wanted them. Just flip the switch in the cabin and start the generator. There is also an outhouse if you prefer to rough it. We took a day trip over to Ontanogan and the Porcupine Mountains to see Lake of the Clouds. Very nice trip. We also went to Baraga one day. All in all we had a wonderful time and would highly recommend this place. We thank the owners for sharing the little piece of paradise on earth. We will be back.

Fun and relaxing getaway!
If you're looking for a secluded, fun and relaxing getaway for your family vacation, this is the place! Our family has enjoyed several visits and each time was wonderful. Beautifully renovated cabin tucked away in the woods, and right on Holmes lake, you couldn't ask for a better view! It is very clean and well maintained. Enjoy your morning coffee on the porch swing, and your evenings grilling out and playing cards. The fishing is great, and we loved spending our afternoons out on the boat/canoe. Don't forget your sunscreen and bug spray! Keep your eye out for the variety of wildlife that makes their home there. We have seen deer, bear, fox, coyote, moose, porcupine, eagle, just to name a few! Have your camera handy! The town is a short drive away and offers a post office, restaurants, ice cream shop, and bait shop, as well as a grocery store and great souvenir shops, among others. The Michigamee reservoir is nearby and is a fun place to go swimming and enjoy other water sports. We have 3 young children, and they have a blast here. We look forward to returning, and highly recommend this vacation spot! If you want to take a break from the stress and distractions of everyday life, look no further! The family time and memories made here are priceless.

A Little Piece of Heaven
What an amazing place! I've been coming to Upper Holmes lake for many years and I'm quite familiar with this property. The makeover this cabin and lakefront have undergone is nothing short of incredible. Our family has grown up fishing the Michigamme Reservoir and the lake here. Always able to catch some great bass, gills and if you like, pike, muskie, and walleye. There are some real trophy fish in these waters. Fishing isn't the only thing to do around here though, since there is a great sandy shoal and small boat dock for spending the day in the sun, swimming when you get too hot! When you get hungry there's a great picnic table for dinner and bbq! The perfect way to end the day is by watching the sunset over the lake. Breathtaking is an understatement. The wildlife you'll encounter is unreal. I've seen deer, bear, wolves, coyotes, turkeys, and very often bald eagles on the lake. Though very rare, it's possible to see moose, bobcats or cougars. There is a great public boat launch at the Michigamme where you can spend the day tubing, water skiing, jet skiing, take your pick! Our kids have made memories doing these things that they'll remember for the rest of their lives. I've brought friends up who love the outdoors but also like to stay in touch. Cell phone service is sufficient to make phone calls I've found and we use both Verizon and Sprint. Also, if you forgot to get some things in town it just a short trip back down either Rock Crusher Rd. or W.P.A.. The IGA is a great stop for groceries and Fob's is perfect for breakfast before heading home or lunch/dinner if you've been in town shopping all day. Both Iron Mountain and Iron River are close enough to visit, as is Escanaba. The house is completely renovated and looks brand new. The wood just shines in the house with all of the natural light coming through the big front windows and slider. The kitchen is also new with a propane refrigerator and a great range oven. The bathroom is perfectly clean, renovated and spacious. Finally the 2 bedrooms make winding down at the end of the day so peaceful. Speaking of peaceful, this is a private, secluded lake with several cabins, none of which are inhabited year round. It wouldn't be surprising to go several days without seeing anyone drive by. Overall my family and I are always amazed by this special place on earth and will continue to come back for the rest of our lives. Highly recommended!

The Cabin is owned and operated by David & Nancy Young, along with Tom & Becky TerBeek, their daughter and son-in-law.

David has appreciated spending time in the UP since before the Mackinac Bridge was built! He and Nancy were able to acquire there first parcel of property here in the 1970s , and build a cabin for their own personal enjoyment in 1987, where five generations of their family have had the pleasure of making so many wonderful memories. Tom & Becky had the incredible opportunity to retire in 2020 and make this their permanent home, which was such a blessing!

Their children and grandchildren encouraged them to purchase and update the Cabin, with the goal of making it available for others to be able to have their own memorable experiences here in this magnificent environment!

Tom and Becky live in the family cabin nearby and will assist their guests in any way possible to make this a remarkable vacation!

Why they chose this property

This property is very secluded and located directly on Upper Holmes Lake. This is a non public lake and there are also 200 private acres of land for your recreational use.

The Cabin has it’s own private dock, with a fishing boat, canoe and paddle boat provided. If you do like to fish, the lake is home to panfish, bass, pike and walleye. If you enjoy watching and listening for birds, you will likely see and hear loons swimming on the lake. Bald eagles nest in the trees around the lake. And songbirds are plentiful — the whippoorwills especially like to make their presence known!

You may hear wolves and coyotes howling at night, or see some deer, bear, beaver, or maybe even a moose! Also, if it is a clear night and the conditions are right, you may be able to view the Northern Lights!

Feel free to swim in the lake, if that is an activity you enjoy!

There is a railroad track crossing the north end of the lake, which is quite a sight when a train comes by!

You are welcome to bring your own kayak for use on the lake. If you have a bigger boat, the Michigamme Reservoir is only five minutes away, where you will find a great boat launch and plentiful fishing. While they are not permitted on the property itself, there are also great trails nearby for ATVs and ORVs.

What makes this property unique

This property is centrally located in the western UP, just 5 miles from the historic small town of Crystal Falls. It is perfectly situated for any number of day trips, including, but not limited to — both Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, the Porcupine Mountains, Pictured Rocks, Copper Harbor, several waterfalls and rapids, museums, historical sites, casinos — the list goes on and on!

If you are looking for a secluded, private getaway, you have found it here at the Cabin! Disconnect from the outside world for a bit, reconnect with each other, come enjoy the unspoiled beauty in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and make your own wonderful lifetime memories!

We look forward to meeting you and having you as our guests!
