Vinjan is a small village in Istria, situated on the top of a hill. It is surrounded by forests, and 10 km (6 miles) north-east of Pore. The ancient terrace on the market square, which can be entered through a Venetian arch, offers a remarkable view of the sea. Since the time of the Venetian government, Vinjan has always been an important and renowned trading centre where agricultural products and tools of all kinds were sold. Even today, every last Thursday of the month, a traditional open market is held, which is a special attraction for residents of the whole of Istria. If you drive down the stone road from the hill where Visnjan is located, you will have the opportunity to visit a prehistoric Gothic church. It was built by Abbot Anton in the fourteenth century. The road leads to the town gates, decorated in bas-relief with the Venetian lion motif from 1517, with the pride of the town behind it, the old market square. The market square was partly surrounded by the town walls, which were built during the 13th and 14th centuries. In the market square there is a 27 metre high bell tower, an 18th century town centre, a fountain, and the parish church of St. Kvirik and Julita, which dates from the 19th century. Whatever you need, you can find it in Vinjan: Restaurants, supermarkets, coffee shops, a bank, a pharmacy, a clinic and a post office. In the surroundings of Vinjan you can dine in one of the traditional Istrian taverns, where you will have the opportunity to taste the original Istrian specialities, as well as the best wines of the region Malvasia and Teran. Vinjan is a place of special interest for astronomy lovers because of its internationally renowned Astronomical Observatory.
