Classic u.p. style

Had a wonderful time. Beautiful property, secluded lake, great outdoors! Kayaking was great saw deer and beaver. Pontoon perfect for fishing. Caught crappie, pike, and bass. Finnish sauna great for family warm up. Enjoyed making smoothies and taking in the wonderful view from the living room after grilling dinners. Paul was very pleasant to talk to and full of area history.

A rustic and beautiful retreat

We had a wonderful time and a great place to spend with family and friends. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a get away and enjoy the outdoors, fish, camp fires, kayak, swim and bike. There was an endless way to spend outdoor activities and watching wildlife and sun sets. The surrounding area also offered additional activities such as kayaking pictured rocks in Munising. It was a bit of a drive but well worth it. I would also recommend a restaurant in Michagamme call Mount Shasta-great food and service. The one feedback have to make guest's stay more enjoyable and convenient is that more dish rags, towels, pot holders, hand towels and dish wear/utensils are needed. It was also disappointing that the sauna did not work during our stay as this was one of the reasons that we rented the cabin. Ovderall a great place to stay.

Great place

Was a great place especially if you have a large group, the care taker Paul met us and brought us to the house which is deep into the woods so your pretty secluded from everything, was a very clean place with lots of space, the lake was pretty much ours but the fishing was pretty slow but I did hook on to a big snapping turtle. There are is a small pontoon boat good for three maybe four people to go around the lake and there are kayaks you can use also. As far as nature we did Have moose tracks outside the cabin on the first morning but never seen them again, a couple eagles and a couple deer on the way in and we did see some turtles come up on shore and lay some eggs but the only bad part was lots of misquotes. Let me finish by saying was a nice relaxing week.

Many wonderful memories made in this secluded serene lakefront cabin

We had a wonderful time. We stayed here for the second time in three years with our entire family of 6 adults and 2 children. I would definitely recommend this location to anyone or group looking for a place to get away from everyone and everything. Fishing all day , camp fire in the evening and relaxing all the times in between. I would suggest or throw out there that without a washer/ dryer in the cabin that more towels would be nice . With 8 people showering, playing the lake , etc it became a challenge to find a towel to dry off with but really only great things to say about this place. The location was pure serene nature - even the squirrels were entertaining !

The cabin, boathouse, lake and land were beautiful!

I took my kids to see what the UP was all about. The caretaker was helpful and friendly and the cabin was very clean and comfortable. We plan to be back sometime preferably after the UP mosquito season. The location made visiting several different places easy and the privacy and seclusion of the property was fantastic. We used all the boats and were quite at home using the available kitchen and sauna. My kids have some fantastic memories of our first VRBO cabin rental.

Rustic and serene retreat

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here at Camp Anam Cara. We had a big family gathering of three generations. We loved the peaceful, private surroundings and beautiful lake. We fished every day and star gazed at night. You definitely feel like you are in a true lake house in the wilderness. We hiked, swam, kayaked and enjoyed the flat grassy area next to the house where we set up corn hole and the kids tossed football. On rainy days we drove into Marquette for shopping and also visited a nearby waterfall. We cannot wait to return. The only constructive feedback I have is we definitely needed more linens, dish rags, clean potholders and dish soap. Unfortunately the caretaker also told us the screen doors for the rear patio doors were missing and had yet to be replaced so we could not open these sliding doors for a cool breeze. Aside from these small things everything was as expected- a beautiful, quiet, private retreat on a quiet lake in the beautiful UP. Thanks Brian!!

This property was by far our favorite in our five years of going to the Upper Pennisula.!

We have visited the Upper Pennisula on our family vacation for five years and this was by far the hands down favorite with all our age groups and activity levels. The youngest loved it for the abundant turtles, fish and frog catching opportunities , the teen loved the boating , fishing and campfires , the adults enjoyed the remote quiet peaceful surroundings and comfortable cabin amenities. This place provides an out in the woods experience, complete with a beaver and beaver dam, with the comforts of home. Great vacation - helpful and very nice caretaker that stopped to check on us and give us the lowdown on area fishing. I would definitely recommend this for family of all ages. The mattresses were just right for a wonderful night sleep. Home was very well maintaned with great grill , carpet made for a place that kids run in and out of , a splinter free deck to relax on and watch the grandchildren and teenagers play off of the dock and swimming pier, and large fire pit to sit around and make smores and hobo pies.

Renewed Spirit

Everything was lovely. The seclusion was just what we needed to decompress from stress. Great beds, kitchen had everything we required, and the grill was excellent. Fishing was iffy because of the weather but we had fun. Local flora and fauna was beautiful.

Absolutely gorgeous!

My husband, 4 kids and I loved staying here. We had the lake all to ourselves! We fished right off the dock and would catch enough fish for us to eat supper every night. The kids loved kayaking and the pontoon was great to take out fishing. It was so secluded and quiet! We wished we could stay there forever!

A wonderful place to rejuvenate

This was our eighth year at Anam Cara and we have loved it every time. Our stays have always been wonderful and relaxing. The week allows us to re-energize for the rest of the year. The scenery is beautiful and the accommodations offer everything you could reasonably expect.

Wonderful Fishing

If you value seclusion, love the water and enjoy fishing, then this is the property for you. This property offers the peacefulness of mist on the lake in the morning and gorgeous sunsets without the interruption of jet skis, loud voices and roaring boat motors. While the road to the property is a bit of a challenge, all three of our vehicles including two smaller cars, made it safe and sound. Once there, the house is just as pictured - not fancy but perfect for a secluded family get together. The small pontoon boat is great for two fishermen and the kayaks are a lot of fun. We caught lots of fish including small mouth bass, large mouth bass, rock bass, bluegill, pike and musky. The largest fish was 23 inches. Don't be scared off by the electricity being supplied by a generator. We had absolutely no problem. The water is really good and while the refrigerator is smaller, there is a large cooler that holds all the extras. The Michigammee Market is small but very well stocked. Definitely try the hand dipped ice cream. Get a single cone because they are huge! We also bought fresh corn there and it was the best we have ever had. We must have come at the perfect week, because there were no mosquito issues until late evening and we had beautiful weather all week. My brothers and I get together every summer. This was our best vacation and we all want to come back. Brian (the owner) and Paul (the caretaker) were both great to work with.

Secluded and Quiet

Renting Anam Cara was a great choice for our family. We spent a week in August 2011 and could not have had a nicer vacation with the kids and grandkids. First, the location is great and Spruce Lake is beautiful. Second, the kayaks and pontoon boat provided a weeks worth of entertainment and relaxation. This lake is wonderful to explore and meet a few beaver along the way. There were plenty of life jackets for all sizes which are a must for the kids as well as the adults for jumping off the dock and floating around. Third, very few mosquitos. Fourth, the cabin was perfect for a northwoods setting with plenty of sleeping room and two bathrooms. A nice oversized kitchen table came in handly and the living room was plenty big. The kitchen has plenty of counter space to prepare meals and I was able to make what I wanted with the equipment supplied. I even baked a cheese cake. Fifth, the sauna was a blessing for the kids to shower once they pulled themselves out of the water for the day. It was a hit for all. Bring your own kitchen towels though if you plan to stay for the week and do a lot of cooking. We did manage to break away one day to tour the Henry Ford Historic Sawmil in Alberta. We drove up to Pointe Abbay in Baraga County and stopped at the Canyon Falls and Gorge. Craig Lake State Park was also beautiful and primitive and worth the drive and short walk to the lake. And I forgot to mention, the kids picked so many raspberries around the cabin I had to make a torte. The blackberries were just starting to ripen and we had a nice taste. We've been to this area many times and feel lucky for the opportunity to share it with our kids and grandkids. Don't hestitate to rent the cabin if you have small kids because ours had the time of their life catching frogs and fishing from sunup to sundown. The grandkids are ages 7 to 13 and all kept their life jackets on while on the dock or out in the water which added to my security and level of anxiety about keeping them safe. I can't say enough what a great time we had and thanks to Paul the groundskeeper for bringing us in and to Brian for making his cabin available. One more thing, take an axe and a saw along and you'll have all the campfire wood you'll ever need.

Worth it!

I have been here twice and both times it has been great. We enjoyed fishing, kayaking, exploring the woods, swimming in the lake and spending nights at the fire pit. I would highly recommend this to everyone. The location is great and provides a lot of privacy. Totally worth the long drive.

Great Family Vacation Setup

We visited in August and in thinking about going this year again, I decided to share my experience. This house is very private but not what you'd expect in the woods. It is comfortably decorated and I found it both relaxing and entertaining with a lot of outdoor activities for all the boys. The mattresses and bedding are high quality which mad the experience that much better with night after night of restful sleep. The house has an open floor plan to allow for a lot of fun gathering time. Two of the bedrooms are across the hall from each other in case you have younger children that prefer to be close. The other bedrooms allow as much privacy as you want/need. After a restful night, there are plenty of options for the whole family....I was able to sit on the very comfortable deck with endless views of nature while the kids went fishing, kayaking, tossed a football or swam in the lake. My 5 year old daughter seemed to find endless fun chasing two frogs along the beach edge pretty much all week. At night we built a small fire in the fire pit on the beach and made smores and just had fun talking. A great family vacation and we will definitely be back!

Truly away from it all

As advertised, this property is well secluded, but is by no means "roughing it." The nearest town, Michigamee, is quite small. Marquette is about a 40 minute drive. It appears from the photos that there have been some improvements and upgrades added since my visit (looks like a new deck on the main house and there is a new and better staircase to the sleeping loft). All kitchen euqipment, baths and boating equipment were in good, working condition, as expected. The place had been properly cleaned prior to our arrival. The owner and local caretaker were helpful in getting us situated at the property and in giving advice on activities and nearby attractions. The property is near the Mt. Shasta restaurant (where "Anatomy of a Murder" was filmed), and serves as a perfect starting point for day trips to historic Marquette, Houghton/Hancock, or a scenic drive to Copper Harbor at the end of the Kewenaw Peninsula and many lighthouses on the shores of Lake Superior.
