As the gateway to the Mecklenburg Lake District, the climatic health resort of Plau am See has a long tradition as a holiday resort. At 38.4 km², the lake of the same name is the third largest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and offers the best conditions for water sports enthusiasts and hobby anglers. The hilly surroundings with forests and other or larger lakes offer many other excursion possibilities on foot or by small bike. The Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide Nature Park begins on the northern shore of Lake Plau and is a popular destination for excursions, which is described in detail in the Karower Meiler. The Moorochse observation tower is located directly on the lake. In Plau itself there are several bathing beaches, boat and bike hire, diving and sailing schools, climbing parks, passenger boat trips and fishing opportunities. The picturesque old town, which is still characterised by the half-timbered and brick houses of the farming community, invites you to stroll around with its numerous restaurants, cafés and shopping opportunities. In addition to the lift bridge, there is the castle tower with ramparts, the Protestant town church of St Mary from the 13th century and the Plauer town hall in the Dutch Renaissance style. The latest highlight is the observation tower directly at the transition from the Müritz-Elde waterway to Lake Plau.
