The street has its roots in the 1600s and this is visible in the architecture. Many of the buildings are small and pittoresk with stucco and red shingle roofs. The street was originally home to workers, fishermen and craftsmen who contributed to Christianshavn's development into an important industrial and commercial area in Copenhagen. Amagergade became nationally famous in the 1970s as the site for production of the Danish TV series "Huset på Christianshavn". This series showed life in a backyard in Copenhagen and has added to Amagergade's fame and nostalgia for many Danes.
