Come Experience Burgundy! Immerse yourself in the warmth and charm of this beautiful region of France. Our vacation rental is a one-bedroom, two-bathroom house/cottage in the beautiful Medieval town of Semur-en-Auxois, just an hour's train ride from Paris. The house is perfect for a small family or two couples traveling together. It has been recently renovated in a French country style, has spectacular views of the town ramparts, and is located on the north bank of the river Armancon, which winds its way through Semur.

Semur-en-Auxois is simultaneously a modern, thriving community and a friendly, welcoming town steeped in history and culture. The house is located just a few minutes' walk from the center of town, yet its location is also private and tranquil.

The house currently has one bedroom available with en-suite bathroom (while remodel of the 2nd ensuite is completed). One bedroom is upstairs, with a stunning view of the ramparts, and one is downstairs at river level, with its own private entrance. The upper bedroom has wood floors, vaulted ceilings, a queen-sized bed, two seating areas, a private bathroom with shower, and a private balcony.

Our rental house in Semur is the perfect retreat. Use it as a home base for exploration of the surrounding vineyards, countryside, and historical sights, or just curl up in the salon with a glass of wine and read a book to the sound of the birds and ducks.

A magical visit to a storybook village

Our month-long vacation at the Simmons home in Semur-en-Auxois couldn't have been more perfect. The house was so comfortable, the setting by the river so idyllic, the neighbor so friendly, the communication so quick, the welcome basket of goodies so thoughtful. I couldn't give higher praise. You will love your time spent here! Thank you, Simmons (and Jackie!)

Connected Wilderness

This is a slice of wilderness (rambling pink granite terraces flowing gently into the river) with views that are as varied as they are private. It really is as you imagine from the descriptions but better, blended with your own experiences. The decor inside is functional if a little dated (clearly a work in progress) but anyone can see and enjoy its enormous potential. The sort of house that everyone who stays there can project their own ideas on because the location (its connection to Semur) and setting (that slice of wilderness) are so strong.

Unique and quiet location

Location right at the riverbank is gorgeous. Dinner right next to the river was very nice. Often sat there until the bats came out. There was a starter pack of groceries waiting for us, which was great. Didn't have to go on a shopping spree on the day of our arrival. The separate downstairs bedroom is not a perfect scenario for a family with smaller kids, since you are quite "detached". But there is a sleeping couch in the living room, so we could stay in the "main house" together. Bathroom and kitchen were well equipped.

Perfect spot

What a lovely little place!! This spot was just perfect for a girls trip getaway. The town is adorable and all the locals were very kind and patient with our poor French. The house itself is soooo cute and cozy with amazing views from each window. Had everything we could have needed. Laundry and dryer all worked great. Hot water and good water pressure. It is a very special place and was perfect for us. I will note, because it wasn’t totally clear to me from the listing, that the bedroom with the twin beds is accessed from the exterior of the house, so you have to use the outside stairs to get to the bedroom from the rest of the house. This wasn’t a problem for us though. We loved our time here!

An amazing experience all around

This place is exactly as advertised and the experience is of living in an old French house in a village where time passes very slowly. The living room has windows all around and a lovely place to just sit and enjoy listening to the birds and watching the river meander by. The bedroom has a nice balcony and a window that overlooks the river. Bathroom is good as is the shower. The kitchen has everything you need to cook. The welcome basket and cheese was a lovely touch. We picked up everything for breakfast at the local boulangerie and the Intermarche store had everything else. There are some amazing restaurants in town as well. Note that you do have to climb up a few steps to get to the bedroom so this may be a problem if you have mobility issues. The village itself is something out of a fairytale. Walk across the bridge next to the house, turn right, and walk to the end for the best view of Semur.

Perfect little cottage

There are not enough superlatives to describe how wonderful it is to stay in this quintessentially French gite. This is our second stay here (four weeks last fall and two over Christmas this year) and we are already planning on coming back. The house itself has everything one needs to be comfortable: modern appliances, homey fireplace, good heating system, warm, well-appointed kitchen, welcoming beds (we only used the upstairs bedroom this time) and house managers who are very responsive. To really appreciate what you are getting when you rent this property you have to look beyond the four walls of the house. Out of every window is the cutest view ever. The cul de sac is quiet and set back from the road. La Minime, a special, affordable restaurant is a 3-minute walk. Semur-en-Auxois, a ten minute walk, has the feel of a small village but has everything you would want: wine shop, boulangerie, epicierie, specialty boucherie, fun little bistros and a great Sunday market. Dijon and Beaune, both filled with eye-popping sights and culinary finds are only 50 minutes away. The famous wine villages (think Meursault, Pommard, Santenay, Aloxe Corton and more) beyond Beaune are worth a visit. We give our highest recommendations to the little cottage at 6 Impasse Caron. If you stay here you will love it.

Voldoende

De ligging van het huis is goed. Rustig.

A little bit of heaven

This is a beautiful little house on a lazy river a short walk outside of the quintessentially medieval French town, Semur-en-Auxois. We travel to France a lot and, in our experience, this is the best house in the best region, ever. It is well maintained, has big kitchen with a fireplace (did I mention romantic?), nice bed and comfortable bathroom. From every window there is the most fantastic view. Being on a short “impasse” (no outlet) there is no road noise. We were here a month and explored all of Burgundy from this home base: the great wine villages in Cote de Nuit and Cote de Beaune, Chablis, natural wonders in the nearby Jura, amazing archeological sites and lots of the-cutest-ever French villages. This is also a great house to just take a day to relax. A great Sunday market and a full kitchen means cooking in is always an option. We just can’t say enough good things about 6 Impasse Caron. It is well managed and the owners, Jerry and Kathy, were so nice and helpful. Just one word about Semur-en-Auxois. It has everything and still maintains its old-world charm. Lots of nice places to eat and sites to see right in this unique and special village. An Intermarche’ (supermarket) is close by on the edge of town so all of the living essentials, gas and bottle recycling (you’re going to need that if you stay here) are all close. We highly recommend this lovely little “gite” and will be retuning ourselves as soon as we can. Mike and Nancy, San Diego, CA

Charming and Magical

We loved, loved, loved this beautiful home. Views from each window, deck, and patio were amazing. The stunning situation on the river afforded lovely morning, afternoon and evening joy. Everything we needed was there and we soaked up the magic for six days. Semur-en-Auxois is in easy walking distance and access by car is simple. The large cozy living room and upstairs deck were our go to spots and we were sad to leave them. Thanks to everyone who created this unique and special home. We will return.

Best of Burgundy

Semur is a great location from which to enjoy the richness of Burgundy. In particualar, easy access to the extensive canal system with its bike trails is a dream for cyclists. Semur itself is a charming town with all the services that are required for a short or extended stay.

Peaceful Setting To Explore Burgundy

A charming cottage perfectly situated to explore Semur-en-Auxois and the surrounding countryside. The house is equipped with everything necessary to make for a pleasant stay. We used only the upstairs bedroom and we were able to sleep with the windows open, which provided for cool breezes even on hot days. We already are planning a return visit.

A gorgeous location, idyllic. We didn’t want to leave. The house had everything we needed.

Very good pictorial instructions helped us find this comfortable house. Otherwise it might have been difficult to find it, tucked away beside the river with views that were a delight. Parking was off street. The house had everything we needed and more. The old town was within walking distance and well worth exploring. Thank you for the welcome goodies on our arrival and for the excellent information about the house itself and the area.

One of the best places I have stayed

From the moment we saw the town from the bus we knew that we had come to a special place. The house was equally amazing. Its position on the river gave us a wonderful view across to the ramparts and up and down the river and its weeping willow trees, and the only sound was bird song and the quacks of ducks. Outside the garden is made up of different areas, each with somewhere to sit. Inside the house is really comfortable, clean and well maintained, and we particularly enjoyed the wood burner in the kitchen and the basket of food and bottle of wine which was left for us (as well as the well stocked cupboards). We travelled there by train and bus and had fully intended to have days out by bus - but the house and the town and the footpaths round about were so wonderful that we did not leave Semur for the whole week. It is an ancient, unspoilt town, and the countryside and gardens were spilling over with blossom and wild flowers.

About the host

Hosted by Jerry Simmons

Host profile image
Jerry and Kathy are natives of San Diego who love to travel. Kathy loves it so much that she was a flight attendant for 33 years! In all their travels, they have never found a place with more warmth and old-world charm than the little town of Semur-en-Auxois in Burgundy. The locals have welcomed them, as they do all their guests, to Semur. Kathy and Jerry (and their son Tim and daughter Brooke who help manage the rental) will be thrilled to welcome you to their house.

Why they chose this property

Kathy and Jerry's journey toward their vacation rental can be summed up in one word: serendipity. They happened to find Semur and fell in love with it immediately; they happened to come across a real estate agent who happened to have a spectacular riverfront house available, and the owners happened to be home and were willing to give them a tour. Everyone they met was so helpful and kind, and the house was so special, that Kath & Jer knew they had to make a permanent place there for themselves. Soon afterward, they also realized that Semur is such a hidden treasure that they had to share it with others.

What makes this property unique

There is something magic in the air here. Maybe it's the background soundtrack provided by the birds and the ducks; maybe it's the hourly soft chime of the cathedral or the reflection of the rampart towers in the river; maybe it's the warm, flower-fragrant spring and summer air breezing through the open balcony doors; maybe it's simply the warmth and welcoming nature of the people of Semur. There's something about this house and this place that relaxes the muscles and gently twists the corners of the mouth upward. It's easy to find yourself smiling and sighing happily even though all you've done is sit down in the unique and sunny Salon.

And that's just while you're actually at the house. Semur is in the happy position of being right in the middle of Burgundy wine country: it's almost exactly equidistant from the wine-producing regions of Chablis and Beaune. As for the food, welcome to the heart of gastronomic France, where you can enjoy superb food at a tiny auberge for a few Euros, or a meal of ambrosia at a three-star Michelin restaurant. Add to that historical sites ranging from Roman ruins to chateaux, and Semur is an ideal vacation spot for almost any kind of vacation.
