Oceanside Paradise
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The location was great--quiet, but close to Bath with its shops and restaurants. Especially enjoyed the Maine Maritime Museum! The cottage is a great location for a family get-together. The scenery was fabulous! The cottage was not lacking in anything. The host was helpful in answering any questions we had.

Like Staying With A Friend
The host, Jim, treats you like you would, yourself, in hosting good friends; he has anticipated all of your needs and seen to it that they are all met. We have never had a better host in all the many years of cottage rentals! The cottage itself is immaculate and the view out of it is better than the pictures show! Comfy beds and everything that you might need but didn't bring with you; even extra toothbrushes!

Wonderful Maine Retreat
When we drove into the driveway, we could not believe our eyes. The property was everything we wanted, expected and more. The cottage was perfect inside and out. It was extremely clean and larger than we thought. There is plenty of room for a family. The views from the living room and front porch are stunning. The natural waterfront setting is peaceful and quiet. Our host, Jim, was welcoming and accommodating. He answered our questions and was always available if we needed anything. We cooked lobsters by using the pot and cooker that are provided. It is the perfect location to relax and unwind. We look forward to returning.

Beautiful setting, wonderful stay
We spent a week at Blue Heron Cottage in August 2016 and loved it. The cottage is the perfect size for a small family or a couple. The master bedroom is full of light and has a fantastic view. As others have said, the setting is serene and peaceful. My wife swam off the floating dock every day when the tide was in. When it was out she and my son explored the mud flats and one day my son dug out an antique plate, which must have slid off a sailboat decades ago. Jim was a great host and we hired him one day to take us on a boat tour of the area, stopping for lunch at Cundy's Harbor. We saw seals as well as plenty of bird life. Our only quibble was that the kitchen, while it had the basics, was a little thinly equipped for cooks -- if you're cooking for a larger group as we did one night you have to be creative. It needs more pots and pans. We hated to leave. A week wasn't enough. We'd love to come back.

Peaceful
We spent a week at the Blue Heron Cottage and wish we could have stayed for a month! The peacefulness and serenity there was exactly what we hoped for. The cottage was very well equipped. The views were beautiful. And our hosts, Jim and Beth, were very gracious. We recommend taking a boat tour with Jim to see many sites only visible by water. My husband and I (and our German Shepherd) had a wonderful time. We look forward to going back next year.

Great waterfront rental
This cottage is on a serene inlet just south of Brunswick Maine. It has a dock that provides water access. Herons and Osprey and goals frequent the inlet every evening. This is a beautiful place and a great rental. Jim is an outstanding host. The cottage was very well appointed. We would love to stay here again!

Blue Heron Cottage
We absolutely loved loved loved the home and location...the house was so well appointed with everything that we could possibly need, even down to an old fashioned pencil sharpener! I really liked the way the TV/entertainment area was downstairs, so those who did not wish to watch Tv could not hear or see the activity. I for one, never even went downstairs, because my viewing area was sitting on the porch, on the only comfortable adirondack chairs I have ever sat in, and watching the herons, seagulls, and eagles fish...I could have sat there until the end of time just observing. I loved smelling the sea breezes each day, and hearing the ocean lap at the rocks right outside my bedroom window. This home and site are ideal, situated between very pretty and neat Brunswick and Bath, and also quite close to Portland. I told Jim, once you get there, you don't need to go anywhere, you have arrived at the most ideal spot ever. The kayaking was the best I have done in Maine, and being an avid kayaker, I was able to explore tons of coves, came eye to eye with a bald eagle, and a seal! I will be back next year for two weeks!!!! Thanks JIm for making this home such a wonderful place to stay!!!

Relax with a view.
We stayed here last week. All four humans and two dogs had a wonderful time. The cottage is in great condition. We had everything we needed and felt welcomed the moment we arrived. Just sitting on the deck and watching the view on the water kept us busy for hours at a time. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen was well stocked and we made good use of both the grill and outdoor burner for cooking lobster. All the furniture was in great shape and comfortable. There is a TV room downstairs but I can say that for the first time ever, I didn't watch TV for a whole week. Just didn't need it. I did use the WIFI though for my laptop. The area that the cottage is located is quiet and very country like. The dock from the cottage leads right out to tidal water and is perfect for a leisurely kayak adventure as well as motor-boating during the right tide. The owner was friendly and also provides charter boat service for both fishing and sightseeing. Makes for great one stop shopping. I would recommend this place to any nice family looking to truly relax away the stress of everyday life. Great bird watching as well right from the deck, we took hundreds of photos.

A late spring vacation- relaxing- refreshing- wonderful!
We decided to take an early summer vacation, before our daughter started summer work, and it was great. The cottage was immaculate, the tulips on the table beautiful. We've camped in the area before, but I think I'm now sold on the comforts of a cottage! Coffee sitting on the front porch watching the shore birds was great. Jim and Beth were wonderful. It was great being able to bring our 4-legged family member with us. It was pre-season but Bath and Brunswick were both welcoming. Looking forward to a repeat.

Great Getaway
Our visit to the Maine coast could not have been better. Staying at this beautiful cottage was an excellent experience for not only my wife and I but for the the children as well. Watching the lobster boats working their traps, kayaking, and catching Striped bass with the very knowledgeable host and "Capt" Jim was a learning experience and great adventure for the whole family. The cottage was very clean and cozy. It had everything that we needed and more. It being so quiet sleeping was not a problem. There are endless opportunities at this location no matter what your interests my be. The owners were very helpful and down to earth. I would recommend this cottage to anybody. We did have one problem. We only could stay one week.

A special place
We enjoyed staying for a week last summer over our anniversary. My wife wanted to sign up for a month this summer! The cottage (house) is neat and clean, with an entertaining view of the water and ever changing tides. You will never tire of sitting on the front porch just looking at the surroundings. This is a classic Maine coastal area that’s also close to shopping and other amenities. There are several nice day trips within a short drive – Popham Beach State Park is really nice. We took along my 20 foot Mako powerboat and had it tied up at the float directly in front of the cottage. She did rest on the bottom at low tide (several hours of exposed tidal flat) and there's deeper water dockage a couple hundred yards away. There are several restaurants within easy powerboating distance up the well sheltered bay/river (at Cundys harbor and Sebasco). Fishermen - this is a very good striped bass area. The cottage is a great place to slow down and relax.

Love this place! Really neat with lobstermen in the "front yard". Great place to sail, go motor boating or go kayaking. A few miles by water to Cundy's Harbor where you can get great seafood and enjoy eating it on a deck right on the harbor. Front porch a great place to read a book as the tide comes in. Very quiet, but lots of distractions by heron, egret, and other wild life. Home is set off by itself, very private. Hamilton Sanctuary is a fifteen minute walk with lots of hiking trails on over 200 acres of woodland bordered by the New Meadows River. We plan to go each year!

Bueatiful location - peaceful
We always have a great time while in Maine and this location is fantastic! We explored downtown Bath, the Maine Maritime Museum and took in a show at the Maine State Music Theater. We ate out a lot and found the area restaurants excellent but found time to cook our own “mess” of lobsters fresh from the ocean! The owner arranged for a tour of the New Meadows and watched eagles, ospreys and seals at play. This is a beautiful area! We definitely would recommend this cottage to anyone looking to spend some time in the Midcoast and Casco Bay area. Next year we are staying longer!

About the host

Hosted by Jim Williams

Host profile image
We have been drawn to this area for some time by the stunning natural beauty, variety of wildlife, the museums, the history, the Colleges, and the diversity of activities. Having lived in Portland, Gorham and Manchester (Maine), we summered and camped in the area until moving permanently in 2002. Jim grew up on the New Meadows messing around with boats first living here year round and then staying at the cottage summers and weekends. His family ancestors first moved into the area in the mid 1700’s as subsistence saltwater farmers and fisherman.

Why they chose this property

The Blue Heron Cottage is both secluded and yet only a fifteen minute drive to downtown Bath and Brunswick, which each offer many shopping and dining opportunities. Bath is a shipbuilding community on the Kennebec, friendly to pedestrians, with boutiques and pubs. Home to Bowdoin College, Brunswick offers dramatic views of the Androscoggin and a popular walking green lined with restaurants and bookstores. Each is perfect for an afternoon of browsing in all seasons. Shops in Freeport and L.L. Bean are only another fifteen minutes away. Some of our favorite eateries in the area are Admiral’s Steakhouse, Henry and Marty’s, The Great Impasta, and the Dolphin Marina. There are over forty in the area.

What makes this property unique

There is also a vibrant cultural scene in the Bath-Brunswick area. The Maine Maritime Museum offers exhibits, talks, and other activities on Maine’s seafaring heritage. Take a cruise on the Kennebec River to Merrymeeting Bay and area lighthouses. Or visit the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum at Bowdoin College, which offers guided tours as well as hands-on activities. Tour groups have the opportunity to try on Inuit snow goggles, play with an ajugaq, try a bow-drill, feel various types of fur, and even hold a walrus tusk! The campus also houses the Maine State Music Theatre (MSMT). Now in their 56th year, the MSMT is the premier professional music theater in Maine. In addition, the Bowdoin International Music Festival attracts performers and classical musicians from around the world.
