About this property

A Beautifully Restored Loghouse That Combines Heritage With Modern Amenities.

A real heritage opportunity where you can stay in the oldest house in Strathcona County. This is your chance to experience an early pioneer home without sacrificing modern amenities. While maintaining the original character of the loghouse, newer additions have included a full kitchen, heated floors, bathroom and laundry facilities. In addition to the loghouse, the property also features many historical items including an old bunkhouse, a Swiss-style logbarn, antique farm machinery and an old boat once used for a tourist camp on Cooking Lake in the 1930's. Kilometres of trails throughout the property introduce you to the native flora and fauna in this area. As a wildlife preserve, the property has been maintained in its natural state. Our property also boasts a 70 acre Ducks Unlimited Conservation Area. If you are a bird-watching enthusiast or just looking to enjoy nature, this is the place for you. We offer tranquillity in a natural setting all within a short 35 minute drive to the city of Edmonton.
You will enjoy the full-use and privacy of this heritage loghome with your hosts only a short 10 minute walk away along a forest trail. We are there when you need us but happy to allow you to enjoy your time away on your own in peace and quiet.

A Historical Treasure

We have returned to Maggie’s Hill many times and each occasion brings new experiences for both ourselves and our two King Shepherds…so peaceful and love the combination of the Heritage surroundings mixed in with modern amenities…the trails are well maintained and Martha always has the cabin pristine clean, cosy, and smelling wonderful…the distant sound of the trains is very nostalgic …exciting to spot the deer, moose ,coyotes and the plethora of birds…hard to leave but look forward to coming back … Thank you ever so much for sharing such a historical treasure!

Delightful

We've been coming here for five years, and it never disappoints. Always clean and welcoming. Beautiful trails through woods and meadows. The cabin is cozy and so comfortable, and surrounded by woods. This time we were treated to beautiful aurora!

Wonderful Old-Timey Cabin!

We had a fantastic, relaxing stay. Was primarily for the purpose of snowshoeing, which was amazing... lots of fresh snow and amazing trails that start right behind the cabin. The cabin itself is great... comfy and well-equipped.

Beautiful historic log house with all the comforts

I stayed with my dog for 3 nights and just love this log house and the surrounding property. The beds are comfy, everything is perfectly placed, and Martha has thought of everything to make this a beautiful place to get away and relax. We loved walking on the trails; you can take a different route every day and never get lost, cause all trails lead back to the cozy log house. Can't wait to get back there soon!

The house itself has everything you could need and the property has beautiful trails for you to explore. We were also so happy we could bring our dog (who also loved it). Beautiful Property 😍

Everything was as described. The property & building were awesome. As someone who loves history this was right in my wheelhouse. Only thing is I wish there was more information on the history of the building. Would have explored the trails more if the bugs weren't so bad. Dogs & I will definitely go back.

Set in a beautiful treed landscape it is for anyone who appreciates peace and quiet. At the same time it is appealing to any who value historical things. Every room, wall space, shelf, corner offers something of interest to stimulate the mind and remind of another era. It is cozy yet airy. The house is well equipped and Martha is a wonderful host.

About the host

Hosted by Martha Rutherford Conrad

Host profile image
I enjoy spending time in the outdoors including hiking, biking and horseback riding. Following an Honours degree in History from Queen's University and a Masters in Information Science from the University of Western Ontario, I have enjoyed a career in museum management. Personally, my husband and I have owned historical properties that we have strived to restore back to their original character. We love to travel, explore new places and meet new people. Fulfilling one of our goals, over the years we have taken our four children on camping trips across Canada travelling as far north, west, south and east as possible within Canada in a truck with an old canvas tent. We loved our journeys together as a family and we look forward to meeting you and hearing about your journeys.

Why they chose this property

Maggie's Hill Heritage Loghouse is a special property that immediately appealed to my husband and I. It is the oldest property in Strathcona County and was settled by one of the first Metis settlers in this area. When his daughter (Maggie) married a Scottish railway man, he gifted the loghouse to them as a wedding gift. Together Maggie and John raised 9 children in a 600 sq. foot loghouse. Sitting on a hill overlooking Hastings Lake, the property soon became known as Maggie's Hill. It is a privilege for my husband and I to become the lastest stewards of this treasured historic site.

What makes this property unique

The property is resplendent with details that depict the early pioneer heritage in Strathcona County from fencing styles, shingles, and architectural details. The property also boasts a 70 acre Ducks Unlimited Conservation Area with an opportunity to view a wide variety of birds and waterfowl including teal ducks, wood ducks, pelican, goshawks and great horned owls.
