About this property

THE JUNGLE FARMHOUSE - Come See the Volcanoes National Park

The Jungle Farmhouse provides a unique Hawaiian experience where you can enjoy nature and seasonal fruit from our farm -- including fresh avocados, tangerines, passion fruit, pineapple, lemons, papaya, jackfruit and bananas. We also provide you with farm fresh eggs from our free range chickens. And NOW is a great time to stay at the Jungle Farmhouse. And we can help arrange tours, bike rentals and provide maps, flashlights and headlamps so you can safely view the lava.

Our farm is a great place to experience and learn how food can be grown in a sustainable and organic way. The farm incorporates the lush rainforest with towering trees and we grow our food using the natural surroundings and permaculture techniques.

The location is great too! We are just minutes from Pahoa Village with great places to eat and shop, and close to Black Sand Beaches, Snorkeling, and Warm Ponds. Nearby farmer's markets provide more local
produce and locally crafted products.

The farm style home has lots of windows and views of the natural surroundings, a washer and dryer, and covered parking. Two lanai (porches) on the front of the house and a huge screened lanai on the back of the house provides wonderful views of the tropical forest, gardens and farm. There is a bbq for guest use too.

Built in 1970, it is a classic solid redwood home designed by the famous home builder Harold E. Hicks and features his signature design elements that include Clear Heart Redwood Interior and Exterior Single Walls. Oak Flooring was another key wood standardized design feature and offered durability and comfort as the lighter color of the oak complimented the redwood walls. Jalousie windows were a standard design feature to maximize the trade winds and, once again, the comfort of the homeowners.

The Living and Dining areas furnished with a great collection of antiques, are a great place to relax after a day of sightseeing. Oriental rugs compliment the oak floors and the windows allow for great filtered lighting and cool breezes.

The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need
and includes a great collection of vintage dishes, gas stove and oven, microwave, large fridge, mixer, toaster, and coffee maker and a bar and counter with stools.

The three bedrooms offer sleeping for 6 in beds and we
can provide extra futons so the house can sleep up to
eight or ten if you use the couches! Two of the bedrooms have sliding glass doors that open to the lanai and one features a half bath and walk in closet. Towels and linens are provided, along with beach towels too.

The main indoor bath features a tub and shower and sink and has slate tile and redwood trim. There is also a outdoor shower overlooking the garden with hot water too! Our hot water is heated by the sun, using solar panels when possible and when its cloudy our electric heater kicks in.

We also provide:
Secure High Speed Wireless Internet
Cable TV, DVD/CD Player, A good collection of board games, CD's, records and DVD's and Snorkeling gear

Absolutely Peaceful!!!

Everything was clean and tidy!! Matthew walked us through his home and showed us where everything was located!! So much room!!! We slept on the beds on the screened in decks, unbelievable!!! My 3 adult nieces and I enjoyed our stay!!! Being located in the middle of a rain forest, it was just amazing!!! Per other reviews, I didn't see one roach!!!

Great family gathering place

This was a super rental for my family. Matthew is an awesome host. Only one suggestion is better living room sofa. It was old and uncomfortable. Otherwise really good.

Jungle house stay

The host was very friendly and accessible. The house was spacious, comfortable and quite clean. The large screened lanai makes the place and is very comfortable to sit or eat in. There were no pigs nor goats and the chickens are wild ones so eggs get laid wherever the chickens want and may not be discoverable. We did get a few oranges. Pahoa is a tiny town but is a active place with a great grocery store, a drug store, hardward store and several good restaurants. It is only a 10 minute drive away.

grossly misrepresented

We chose this place and paid a bit more because my granddaughter would have been thrilled with the animals. We went looking for animals, we were informed that they had been removed 4-6 years ago. (I guess that's not enough time to update your listing). During my first correspondence with Matthew I mentioned the excitement my granddaughter would experience with the animals. At that point, he could have told me that there were no animals, but he never did. The house is filthy and in disrepair. It had cockroaches. Not the jungle kind I am a world traveler and I know the difference. These were German browns. You do not want to stay here.

Hilo Stay

Our host was there to meet us when arrived. Initial feeling was that we had made a great choice. The rooms were large and the kitchen had everything we needed. We liked the fact that both bedrooms opened up to the screened in porch. Unfortunately the property was not at all what we expected from the description on VRBO. We did not have internet which probably was not the fault of the host, Matthew, but still disappointing. The furnishings in the main room were very "tired" and not particularly clean. One of the bathrooms did not have hot water. I would recommend that Matthew take some time to update his description of the property.

authentic Hawaiian local life experience

We had great time! This is a true jungle house, you live inside the tropical forest, with all green surrounding you. I never expected to be such close to the forest. You can pick wiled flowers from the farm. The most coolest things are: fresh eggs from the farm everyday, real egg hunt; two sweet dogs - Duby and Olive are waiting for you in the morning and night. Duby is very playful, likes to jump on you, but very gentle. There is a pig coming every day, drinks water from the farm. You also can eat whatever vegetables and fruits in the farm. We picked kale and made soups. Kenny also shared bamboo he made. Kenny helps to take care of the chicken and dogs when Matthew is not here. They live next to the main house. Cricket or koki frog make the sound all night, it makes you feel more close to the nature. Matthew brought one bowl of eggs and fresh banana bread in the morning! If you want to experience real Hawaiian life in south big island, this is the place. Be prepared: check the weather for your stay, more rain in this area. Keep the kitchen clean, ants like anything left.

Needs Some Work

Pros: The Jungle Farm really is in the jungle. It’s a beautiful spot with tropical vegetation. The host, Matthew, is very friendly and he met and greeted us as we drove up the driveway. He showed us around the cabin and explained how things worked. The kitchen was well equipped and the cabin has an interesting mix of vintage furniture and art work and a large collection of books. Cons: While at first glance the cabin looked very neat and tidy when one looks more closely it desperately needs a good cleaning. There was accumulated dust and grime on the walls, doors, and woodwork and especially around knobs and electrical switch plates. We visited during a cold spell in the winter and the cabin was cold, damp and musty smelling with no heat. If you are coming to Hawaii to warm up during the winter don’t come to the “Jungle Farm.” The master bedroom has a half bath but there is no hot water. The driveway and grounds are not well maintained and the guest parking place is terrible. The host has two vehicles with good parking places but the guest must park in a small space that is hard to get out of. The seating in the living room consists of a worn out Victorian couch and a fainting couch and one nice comfortable chair. The WIFI works well but it’s often not connected to the internet. The pictures of the Jungle Farm on the website are misleading. They were staged and the place looks nothing like the pictures. We concluded that the Jungle Farm is not a good value for lodging.

Would not recommend!!

Matthew met us when we got there. We were told in a message that we could park under the carport to unload if it was raining which it was. He proceded to have us pull up into a cutout in the trees and walk in the rain. He is very nice but the house is infested with roaches, termites, ants and lots of other bugs. The first night i killed 2 roaches that were atleast 3 inches long. Lots of little ones too. We left our bread on the counter only to come home to the bag shredded and the bag gone. Never saw what rodent ate it but there is obviously a mouse or rat problem too. Ever night my bed was covered in bugs. It was soo gross. I get its the jungle but he should really do a better job with pest control. As far a the listing goes its pretty much false advertising. There are no animals besides the chickens and a dog named olive. There hasn't been since 2018. I think its time to change his ad. There was no fruit or eggs either. I payed a little extra from what i was going to because it looked cool and thought we were going to get to see some stuff. The house needs a lot of tlc. The pictures show curtains on all the windows and there were not, so not much privacy. Overall I would not recommend unless you like living with bugs and rodents.

Rainforest Getaway

This was a private and enjoyable spot to spend several days of our vacation. Adult children and their families were very comfortable. There were no pigs or goats, but a wonderful dog and plenty of chickens. At night we were saranaded by a loud symphony of forest creatures fit for any jungle. It was great. We made use of the snorkeling and beach gear as well. The best thing was time spent on the screened deck with each other. No phones or TV required. Bring or buy bug spray. The mosquitoes are hungry. Lol. Kind and wonderful host, Michael, was great! Thank you!

Beautiful, peaceful, comfortable stay

This was the perfect place for my family to stay during our visit to Hawaii. The property was absolutely beautiful with lush vegetation and flowers. The farmhouse was a great size for our family of four. There was no A/C, but it was cool enough with the screened windows open and the fans. My favorite parts of the house were the huge screened in back porch and the outdoor shower facing the jungle. I loved going to sleep to the singing of the frogs. My son and I had fun looking for the frogs with our flashlights and also found some slugs and huge moths. My husband and I explored the backyard jungle and found beautiful flowers. Spanky the dog quickly took to us and we enjoyed giving him pets. You for sure want to bring mosquito repellent. We appreciated the large amount of towels, washer & dryer, coolers, and snorkeling equipment. If you want a pristine, 5 star hotel atmosphere, this isn’t for you. This is an older home in a rainforest environment, so there will be some insects. We were exploring the island during the day, but we loved getting to relax in this comfortable house in the evenings and early mornings. Michael was a great host, giving us a tour of the house and local restaurant recommendations when we arrived and there were avocados from the property for us to enjoy. If we get the chance to visit Hawaii again, we will for sure stay here again.

Jungle House

We loved a lot about this property including the owner, managers, views, dogs, chickens and even the frogs singing. The back porch was my favorite morning with coffee room. A well built, charming and welcome place for families to gather and relax - only downside is that this beautiful retreat is in need of a very deep cleaning and some basic upgrade/repairs.

Beautiful Property

I loved the jungle plants that surrounded the property. We were able to find fresh avocados in the back yard and some guavas in the front yard. The dogs were very sweet. The couple that was there taking care of the property were very sweet and very helpful. They also had the house full of kitchen supplies so we were able to cook and beach towels and snorkel gear and body boards we were able to use. I would recommend this place. It’s not a fancy place but I enjoyed it very much.

Unique experience

We arrived at night and the place was so loud (in a beautiful way) with the sounds of nature. It’s nestled in the middle of the tropical rainforest. The house itself was very clean, cozy, and so charming. I’m so glad we decided to stay here to experience this part of Hawaii’s ecosystem. You can’t get that any other place in the US. It was such a unique experience. They provided everything you need. Lots of towels, blankets, and all the cooking necessities. I have two tips. 1. See what food is in the cupboard before you go buy your groceries, you’ll save money, as they supplied a lot of good basics, even plastic utensils etc.. and 2. Most importantly, do not go exploring the rainforest alone, unless you’re certain you know your way back. We learned that the hard way, after our son thought he was only going out a little ways and got lost for a while. But definitely go explore it, it’s fascinating!

No longer a farm

While the host was very helpful, as was the property mngr, we were hoping ot see the animals and being able to enjoy some fruit off the trees as was advertised. All animals (except dogs) were moved off the property in 2018 (I think) and the farm seems to be reverting back to jungle. On a positive note it was a cute cottage surrounded by a cacophony of frogs! Be ware of driveway with lower vehicles.

Tropical hideaway

There were not as many animals as described. We were told when we arrived some had been removed during a lava flow for their safety. There were chickens, but no eggs, no coffee available on arrival. The mosquitoes were abundant. The night critters were loud, but closing the windows and using the fans made a huge difference. The grounds were beautiful and lush. The owners and caretaker were quick to respond when we had questions or difficulties. Overall Not sure if I would stay there again.

Jungle experience

The property is so cool. The house is full of character and the animals and foliage are surreal (it is a jungle, so keep that in mind when it comes to humidity and bugs). We got to search for coqui frogs at night and avocados by day. The free-range chickens and dogs were fun company. The hosts were very knowledgeable, with great suggestions for things to see, places to eat, and generally hang with. Pahoa has very tasty food with farm-to-table cafes, and is close to Hilo, beaches and Volcanoes Nat'l Park.

Fun in the jungle

Property is located very close to Lava Tree State Park and the 2018 lava flow. Huge trees and fruit trees abound surrounding a fern patch. Onsite are 2 friendly dogs and chickens; other animals were relocated. Stayed in larger separate house and super friendly host family stayed in little house attached by a breezeway. It was a great experience and would stay there again.

Lots of space

After staying in a pretty small condo, it was great to have so much space to spread out with the three bedrooms, living room, and large lanai. It didn't feel like a farm to me (just two dogs and some wild chickens), but more like a house deep in the jungle. Maybe because it is in the woods there isn't much wind, so the mosquitoes descend quickly if you are outside. And the house is pretty dark, especially in the room with the smaller bed. It is a longer driveway with a steep section and bump going up. We managed it in a regular car, but I'd suggest trying to arrive in the light.
