View unbeatable.
Loved the place because of the view. Bed downstairs comfortable but one Queen upstairs needs to be replaced for a pillow top comfortable mattress. Found a dead rat upon arrival and heard them at night along with seeing droppings. Downstairs smelled a lot like roach spray. A little outdated with one fridge not cooling and oven giving out. Place needs a little tlc. However it was spacious for everyone. And the views are amazing. Spent most of my time on top porch staring out at the lake with morning coffee and evening glass of Merlot.

Remote, quiet getaway--WONDERFUL
Our trip and stay at Stoney Bottom Lodge was nothing short of WONDERFUL. We stayed for 5 days in late April 2021 and regret not booking for 10 full days. Stoney Bottom lodge is very comfortable and large enough to easily house 12 people as advertised. However, it was still cozy and comfortable enough to make just my wife and I feel "at home" in this wonderful location. On our first day there we started planning our second trip to Big Lick. The views of both the mountains and lake were excellent and we spent many hours on the outside decks eating or just relaxing. We kayaked in the lake almost every day (as weather permitted) and found the grassy sloped area near the boat dock to be ideal for getting into and out of our kayaks. The road from the lodge to the lake has a couple of rough spots in it, but nothing a pickup or SUV can't handle. The road into the property is a well-built and well-maintained gravel road; however, I would not recommend it for vehicles like sports cars with very low ground clearance. Our old 1996 Buick Century would have had no problems getting to the lodge. One thing to be aware of is the water supply. As the lodges are remote water is by well and the water up there is "hard" with a bit of sediment in the water at first after a period of non-use. It cleared quickly just by running the water for a minute or two. We have experienced this issue in other mountain locations with wells and it's not a big deal. The water tasted fine once clear. The kitchen is well-stocked with just about every appliance, pot or pan, and utensil you might need. The first night there I regretted not bring our lime juicer, but then I found one in the drawer and all was well. Frankly, I was impressed at how well-stocked that kitchen was. As for the bedrooms, I can only speak for the room on the bottom floor where we stayed. The king-sized bed was very comfortable and the room large enough to get around the bed easily. The bathroom on the first floor was roomy and comfortable. Overall, it is a great place to stay as long as you don't need to always be going places to do things. The nearest restaurant is about 40 minutes away in Hot Springs. The nearest Walmart or other large grocery store is in Covington, about an hour away. Bottom line: Great place if you like remote, quiet, peaceful getaways. We're already planning our next trip and a trip to Big Lick will become a tradition for us.

Enjoyed the Big Lick on the Lake
Stony Bottom Lodge on Lake Moomaw was a great experience. We had 2900 acres to roam and enjoyed the lake access. The lodge is large and was able to comfortably accommodate our group of eight with plenty of common areas. Great views of the lake and a remote location made the trip memorable. The kitchen was well equipped, but like the bathrooms are a bit dated, but our group felt comfortable. Erin was a good communicator.

Great stay
We were 3 families 11 people in total. The place was big enough for such number of people. The house has everything you need starting from kitchen equipment and ending by on table games for kids. The place is gorgeous, beautiful view from the house deck. Very nice private dock on lake, but it requires to drive to it. Overall it was a great stay and everybody was happy.

An amazing place for relaxing
I rented this place for thanksgiving break with my friends, and the place is awesome. The view of the lake, the lodge itself, everything was perfect. I was going to give it 5 stars, but there is only one problem, cell signal, which is out of the owner’s hand. You would need to keep in mind that you wouldn’t be able to use your cellphone for the whole period. However, there is a wifi in the lodge, that would get you through your stay. The owner, is a really nice lady. She replies quickly to your questions, and she would help you with whatever you need. The place has everything, and you wouldn’t need to bring anything with you.

Large Space and Great View
No surprises, just an awesome large cabin with a beautiful view! The drive up was adventurous, which added to the appeal for me. We had 10 people stay - there were multiple places for all 10 of us to hang out, or the cabin was large enough for us each to do our own thing. Would stay again!

Couldn't be closer to nature!
It's certainly nothing fancy but the kitchen is more than well stocked, it's very clean, there are plenty of outdoor chairs and a fire pit, and the lake view is spectacular. We have stayed there 3 times and have never had to share the dock. The lake itself can't be beat. We plan to come for many summers to come. I don't know how they could add a thing to improve our experience.

Mixed families with kids and dogs.
Our party had 3 families, two with kids and one without. We had kids from infants to teenagers. This place was almost perfect. The one thing that was a pleasant surprise was that they were stocked with the random kitchen supplies that one might accidentally forget. For example I forgot to bring aluminum foil. They have two coffee makers and plenty of coffee or you can bring your own. The only thing that wasn't perfect is that the propane tank for the grill was not full and we ran out after a day of grilling. There is no place near where we could get a new one. The stove was also old and difficult for me to cook on. Our family went fishing on the private dock and caught a couple of fish. We didn't make it out to the lake because it wasn't warm enough and didn't have our own boat or water sports equipment. If we had though, the lake was down the way and easy to access. Mostly we grilled, played pool, played board games, and made s'mores by the fire pit. We took two Shelties that absolutely loved running free. The children loved having water balloon fights and running around . The cabin itself seems old but in a cute throw back way. They have direct tv and we were able to watch the news and even a couple of movies. The WiFi is reliable but if you are streaming video it isn't great. The three bathrooms were perfect for a group our size and they were stocked with shampoo, body wash, and bar soap. They had a bar stocked with things like straws and little umbrellas. All the things that were supplied were of nice quality, from the hand soap at the sinks to the nice soft toilet paper. The play room was big and there were board games and darts as well. The couches were all comfortable. There was a musky smell when we first arrived but they had a candle and between that and opening the windows, the smell was gone. You do have to run the water in the shower and sinks a bit because at first its brown. Every one loved staying here, we were there for 4 days and 3 nights. We never got bored. If you are looking for a comfortable place to sit back and enjoy the view, grilling, and sitting by a fire pit, then this is the place for you.

Comfortable, Private, Safe and Fun Getaway
As the title suggests, you can't go wrong with picking Stoney Bottom Lodge. It is the perfect place to get away from the daily grind. You will quite literally be forced to disconnect from your devices (if you choose not to connect to the WAY too convenient wifi lol). Aside from Verizon wireless (or a satellite phone), good luck getting any cell reception. Even though it's quite the trek to get to this part of Virginia from most major cities and towns in DC, VA and MD,the trek is SO worth it. My friends and I stayed there for three nights and took advantage of all the amenities this home had to offer. We were a group of 10.5 people, 5 women 5 men and a baby and NEVER felt too close together. The grill is in perfect working order, the fire pit was a fantastic commodity to have (perfect for s'mores), the rooms were clean and comfortable, water pressure was strong along with consistent hot water (even when multiple people were using the showers), kitchen appliances were all in working order and A/C was very reliable. The house may look like it's the scene of a 70's romantic comedy on the inside but trust me when I tell you, not only is it a really nice change from the shiny stainless steel everything, but you'll end up getting more enamored by the nostalgic feeling it provides. The ONLY suggestion I would give the home owner is to repaint and weatherize the outdoor wood floors and beams. To potential renters, Bring a healthy amount of STRONG bug repellent - we had Off Deep Woods Sportsmen II and it worked... well. We should have added several citronella torches just to be safe. On a final note, ff you the type that is safety conscious, don't worry, you're not alone; I too am VERY safety conscious anywhere and everywhere I travel. I always make sure I know my surrounding areas prior to and on the first day of my visit. Even though it is in a remote location, there wasn't a moment where I felt unsafe or noticed any unsafe activities happening around the area. All in all, I HIGHLY recommend you rent this particular property. Fair price, private location, safe and convenient -- If you're feeling adventurous and willing to drive about an hour away to Falling Springs, Virginia you can enjoy some natural spring water swimming and waterfalls GREAT for kids of all ages. Bonus points, if you're an avid star gazer, the pitch black evenings that are a staple of any worthwhile outdoor getaway will have you pulling out your telescopes on the first night.

Perfect Getaway!
The Stoney Bottom Lodge was fantastic! When we finally reached the top of the mountain and saw the lodge for the first time we were blown away! The lodge has breathtaking views. It was the best place we have been to in a while. It so serene. The lodge is very roomy and reach around porch was great to hang out and relax on while looking the lake. Lake Moomaw is simply amazing. The dock is huge and was great to hang out on and swim. We took kayaks out, which worked out great. The pond was simply fantastic, once you find it you WILL be amazed. .. I know I was. We really enjoyed this place and cannot wait to go on another trip to Big Lick Retreat's Stoney Bottom Lodge!

Wonderful Views, Great Lake, and Relaxation
Our group of friends rented this property and loved every minute. This is a great rental house with amazing views. After taking the dogs swimming, my favorite part of the day was sitting on the upper deck enjoying the view of the lake and reading a good book. There are many birds to sing you to sleep at night or provide your morning wake up call. Whippoorwills were some of my favorites, but also barred owls, hawks, and many others. We loved the fact that it was so far off the beaten (even paved) path. We did not plan to leave once we arrived, and that was probably a good thing as it is quite a distance to the nearest town. We would caution that the house sits on top of a mountain / hill. There is a flat yard, but at the edge of the yard, there are steep drop offs. It's a GREAT place to relax, talk with your friends, and cook in the well equipped kitchen. We are planning to return and will try to bring our friends.
