Absolutely Beautiful
First, the house is located in one of the most beautiful settings one can imagine. The only comparable references I can think of is the lid of a jigsaw puzzle box or perhaps a creation by Walt Disney! It is stunning and breathtaking so if you are into walking or hiking or just being alone with your thoughts, this is the place for you. If you are into night life/activites, you will have definitely picked the wrong place!!! This home is located several miles down a forest road and about 1/2 mile to the nearest house which is in a little village of about 8-10 house (no stores/pubs,etc). It is on the edge of the Black Forest so plenty of places to walk or hike.
The house itself was very nice with plenty of amenities, beds were good, kitchen had plenty of utensils, pots, wine glasses, etc. The closest grocery store is in Schopfheim which is about a 15-20 minute drive but as an American, the store was wonderful (Heibers) with huge selections, fresh breads of all kinds with accompanying small restaurant and amazing prices on everything (cheap!) including a large wine selection. We were there during the month of October and the house was nice and warm. The only drawback (for us anyway) was that the casual seating was around a large/long beautiful wood table but no couch, etc. (one upholstered chair). The other drawback was no microwave for say heating up leftovers or for morning oatmeal but we made do with the electric tea pot in the morning but a microwave would have been a little more convenient. For such a secluded spot, we did get good internet reception even though slow but when you are in this type of spot, you should not be in a big hurry about anything!!
The town of Wieslet is about 10 minutes away and has a 'mill' which bakes bread and has other types of items such as cheeses, brats, nuts, etc. but not a grocery shopping place. We ate at two different small gasthaus/restaurants in Wieslet that were very good and we would reccommend both. Schopfheim has a number of places to eat and only another 5-10 minutes further.
If you are into seclusion and being in, really, one of the most picturesque places in the world (we were in Norway the previous year and it is certainly dramatic but this area does not take a backseat!), this is the place for you. Our stay was two weeks and its location for visiting Switzerland and France was great, and the castle at Lorrach (about 30 minutes) was super!! Frieburg also great!
