About this property

Yellowstone Park - Cabin On Private Creek, Other Lodging, Close To Activities

The Creek Cabin is on it's original location right on the creek built by our family members in the 1800's. It has 2 quality queen beds, 1 bathroom - Very nice, comfy and cozy.

Original open floor plan with kitchen, dining, and living area. Big two tier outdoor deck right over the creek.
Big refrigerator, electric stove, granite sink, L shaped counter top, shelves, table and chairs, couch, bench, beds, lamps, side tables. All quality dishes and linens provided. Big windows for big views of mountains and animals on 3 sides. The back side has 2 old homesteader buildings staying in place to give it privacy from the Schoolhouse cabin. The Creek Cabin can also be used for families needing more lodging in addition to the ranch's other private lodging.

Big windows allow for great mountain views, as well as the creek sounds so close.

We have friendly ranch animals all about: horses, cows, dogs - all that enjoy visitors and special treats. Other wildlife roam all year around.

Located in the mountains next to Yellowstone Park. Our road connects to Old Yellowstone trail at Yellowstone River. Takes 20-30 minutes to reach Gardiner and park pay shack via hwy 89 or Old Yellowstone Trail, (14 miles total from Gardiner). 6 miles of dirt road and 8 miles of interstate.

Our family homesteaded, bought out the other homesteaders. They hand cut lumber, cleared the mountain meadows, raised hay, cattle, had pet moose whom were numerous on our creek. Our private beautiful basin is made up of 3 ranches, no public access through our area. We have been fortunate to keep it private all this time being next to Yellowstone.

Quiet creek cabin
Perfect location if you don’t mind a short drive into the mountains, especially to access the North entrance of Yellowstone. Cozy cabin was clean and welcoming. Nice to sit on the deck with the creek right in front of you and a nice fire at night. Saw elk come through the yard in the mornings too. Perfect if you’re trying to get away from the touristy areas of Yellowstone.

Yellowstone Basecamp
Great little cabin appx 30 minutes from the Yellowstone gate. Road off the highway is gravel, and there are a few bumps, but nothing an average vehicle can't handle (might leave the Lambo home, take the family car instead...unless the Lambo is your family car, in which case, please contact me, I think you might be my long lost mom and/or dad). The cabin itself is great; pictures don't really do it justice! Was very clean and had everything you need or a little getaway. It's fairly secluded, which is refreshing after spending the day in Yellowstone with all the 2-legged critters actively scouting for 4-legged critters. I saw a post that the lighting in the cabin was bad so I brought extra. I didn't find that to be the case at all...plenty of overhead and lamp lighting....never even considered pulling mine out of the vehicle. Would definitely stay here again.

Beautiful Valley and Nice Cabin
The ranch and the valley that it's in are beautiful, including the drive up there. The cabin is simple and very remote, on a nice little creek. We really enjoyed our time there and the hosts as well. They were very understanding when we totally missed the check out time. Really enjoyed the whole thing.

Peaceful & Scenic
Remote mountain cabin was just what awe were looking for. Wish the mountain road was a bit smoother but loved the scenery and cascading creek along the side. Once there, we were greeted daily by dogs, cats, and horses. As animal lovers, this just added to our experience. We hope to make it back someday.

Authentic Log Cabin
We stayed in the Creek Cabin. Though authentic, this was one of the best experiences we’ve had with properties on this site. It was well stocked, our teenage girls appreciated the WiFi, that worked to their specifications. My wife & I appreciated the sound of the creek rushing by as we relaxed on the back porch taking in the incredible scenery. The owner was very helpful & friendly when we had questions. We all hated to leave.

rustic cabin
The setting of the cabin is beautiful however you need to drive down a dirt road for 6-7 miles which I was not aware of until it was booked. It was extremely dark in the cabin the two lights provided extremely dim. Basically like candle light. There was a clean full size refrigerator which I appreciated however the stove and kitchen area were not clean. The outside grill also not clean. Coffee pot also not clean. Luckily I had some left over sandwiches which we ate on our own paper plates. We booked 3 nights prior to the flooding but only stayed 2 nights as it was not conducive to visiting YNP which was main reason for stay. Also we were concerned with driving our car multiple times down this road as we only had a sedan. We had to drive and extra 8 hours round trip from YNP to get here. The owner did not even realise that we left and emailed us 3 days later saying we needed to leave so he could prepare place for another party.

Perfect Pit Stop
We were traveling across country and looking for a spot close to the north entrance of Yellowstone. It was minutes away from the entrance in Gardiner. The cabin was exactly as advertised, tucked away in the basin of the Cinnabar Mountains. It was absolutely perfect!

Nestled in the Mountains
The property is really tucked away in the mountains. Takes about a half hour to get to the North Entrance of Yellowstone. The cabin views are amazing and it is really quiet. It is more of a studio layout, as the beds and kitchen area are all in an open area. The bathroom is in a separate room. Communication with the owner was great and the directions were very detailed. Thank you for letting us stay.

Beautiful property, tranquil & serene
This was a beautiful rustic log cabin. It was cozy and comfortable, but the only issue I had was that it was NOT a 1 bedroom as described. It was a 1 room cabin. It wouldn't have been a problem if we traveled without the children, but it was rough when their bedtime is 7pm and we had to be lights out and silent at that time. We did enjoy our stay, though. We played in the snow, built a snowman, visited with the horses, and enjoyed the sounds of the stream. We would love to go back, but next time in one of the bigger cabins.

About the host

Hosted by Shai McDonald

Host profile image
McDonald family homesteaded this basin in the 1800's on their way to visit Yellowstone Park. They bought the other homesteaders out, living in seclusion working hard, cutting lumber from the forests, clearing fields for hay, working cattle, filling their bellies with local elk, deer, moose, wild strawberries, and even kept ice in a little mini log ice house on the side of the mountain. They had a keen eye to keep safe from the numerous grizzly bears and many a story to tell of that. Great Grandma McDonald still holds the record for harvest of Montana's largest grizzly when this griz decided to see what was in the storeroom while Great Grpa was in town getting supplies. Our kid's grpa, Jack McDonald worked for the Yellowstone Park for 43 years, the longest working park employee while enjoying raising his family on the ranch. Riding horses hunting indian arrowheads and special rocks was a favorite hobby of the family. We are now the 5th generation McDonald family preserving the original homestead cabins, sharing the beauty. We spend the summers competing in rodeos with our 3 kids all over Montana and checking in on our guests and ranch animals. Winters are spent sledding, snowmobiling, skiing, roping inside the indoor arena, basketball, football parties & keeping warm by the fireplace.

Why they chose this property

Grew up in a multi generational family of the area. After traveling and working in other areas of the world for many years, we were content settling on the family ranch raising kids, cows, horses, logging, fencing. We then just recently built the lodge with massive logs and over 72 windows to help accommodate multi-family gatherings. We enjoy sharing the beauty with others and our animals sure love the extra attention. Depending on season, the wildlife of mountain sheep, mountain goats, antelope, elk, deer, bear, buffalo/bison, coyote, fox, wolves, badgers, gophers, eagles, hawks, other birds are the most prevalent animals seen on the ranch and driving to/from.

What makes this property unique

Getting away from it all, yet still close enough to all the activities. Animals all about in a private, quiet and very beautiful setting while enjoying the comfortable log lodgings.
