About this property

Our cottage is a lovely Hawaiian beach style home. We just completed a renovation which we know you will enjoy.
Fresh linens, beach chairs and umbrellas. cable TV and a outdoor shower, Just a few of the amenities we have provided.
Our comfortable, Hawaiian-style cottage is across the street from the tide pools and ocean access in the quiet community of Puako. Over the years, we have collected surfboards and other bits of old Hawaii to add charm and privacy to this cozy little place.

The cottage includes a fully stocked kitchen with comfortable seating and everything you need to prepare a lovely dinner for two. The bedroom has queen-size bed and quality linens. The bathroom is large, but incase you feel like more room or a bit of romance, there is also an outside shower enclosed by tropical plants and flowers.

This is very comfortable and affordable for two people.
We also have an apt below this rental..one bedroom, sm kitchen and living space.

Fantastic week in Puako

It’s our second trip to Big Island but first time staying In Puako or on Kohala coast. We loved it! The location is great - close to several sandy beaches, reading on Puako or nearby beaches, great shoreline walking right from our door and the snorkeling off Puako reef was some of the best in Hawaii. Saw turtles in water and on shore every day. The birds, the sunrise and sunset! It’s a great location and the property was very comfortable and cool in the evenings. Highly recommended Bryn and Lisa

Great Vacation!

The house was great for our small family. We have been to the Big Island many times over the past 10 years and this was one of our best stays. It was great being close to the beach for morning coffee walks and evening sunsets. The snorkeling was great! Take a break from the big resorts!

Relaxed vibe in quiet neighborhood

Peg's place is just lovely. We were in the upper unit; with a peekaboo view of the ocean and sunrise views of Mauna Kea. I already miss sleeping with the windows open to the sound of the waves and birds and the feel of the soft breeze. If you need private spaces, this may not be for you (unless you rent the lower level as well). However, the open floorplan was perfect for our party of three. We walked the beach trail along Paniau and the fancy resorts. We saw so many turtles and whales. The outdoor shower was an added treat. Would definitely stay here again.

Great location

The beach area across the street is gorgeous. The water is thigh to chest deep depending on how far out you go and the tides. It was quiet and not crowded. Apartment was clean and quiet area.

Great location!

My family and I enjoyed our stay in this lovely cottage, and it was a great base for exploring this beautiful island. It is very close to the ocean in a small quiet beachside community. The hosts were very helpful and welcoming. Would stay here again!

Great location and beach access

A fantastic neighborhood and very short walk to the beach. Beach chairs, boogie boards, etc available. The good part is that the apartment is very bright, but also very warm. But I’m there to get warm. And is is usually breezy. It would be nice to have a lanai. But there is a nice yard and I loved the outdoor shower. I would definitely go back there.

Clean, quiet, breezy

My husband and I came to Puako on a vacation with our larger family. Most stayed across the street in a larger house with beach access, so we spent most of our time there. We mostly just slept at Peg's place, but it was perfect. I was surprised how quiet it was, give that it is on the road, but there was very little traffic noise. The apartment is very comfy and has a wonderful cross ventilation, so you can always get a nice ocean breeze. The house across the street is only one story (in the middle of a remodel, but they haven't added any height) so there's a nice ocean view and you have the sound of the waves to lull you to sleep. The apartment doesn't have it's own private outdoor space, but the property has a lovely yard and outdoor shower that are shared. I would definitely stay again on my next trip to Puako.

lovely, quiet place on a dead end street. Lots of light from many windows, and a nice view of the ocean. We walked along the beach almost every day! Close to Waikoloa and Waimea. Highly recommend :-)

Fantastic location for a couple

This is a simple apartment in a fantastic location. It’s just across the street from the ocean and has a view of the water from the living room and bedroom. It is really ideal for a couple. The on site owner is very nice and super helpful. If you are expecting a resort type atmosphere with bars, restaurants and room service this is not the location for you.

Wonderful spot!

This adorable space was perfect for 2 adults and an infant, but could easily accommodate more. Is bigger than it appears in photos! Location is amazing, just across the street from ocean access. You can actually see the ocean from the bedroom window. Hosts were very quick to respond and incredibly helpful. Excellent, would stay again in a heartbeat!

The Best!

Definitely 5 stars! A comfortable, clean, bright, well-equipped, cottage. Perfect location. Practically across the street to beach access for snorkeling and sundowners. Lots of windows for light and cool breezes in addition to ceiling fans and AC. Peg is a fun loving gracious host and so willing to accommodate any needs. You can’t go wrong here for some peace and quiet. Highly recommend.

Puako Beach Road Rental

Every time we walked into the rental we had a great feeling of openness due to the windows and greenery surrounding the property. The apartment was well laid-out, and quite comfortable! It was perfect for us. We also appreciated the feeling of being immersed in a local community, away from the tourist-style housing and bustle. We were able to not only associate with numerous neighbors, especially at sunsets on the beach, but also with people up-and-down the road as we took pleasant walks amongst homes. Having the nearby 3-mile beach trail was a definite plus. Would would highly recommend this fine place to any who is seeking a relaxed but potentially interactive vacation experience in a wonderful setting.

Puako perfection

This impeccably clean, light and airy upstairs apartment is thoughtfully furnished, with a well-equipped kitchen, comfortable bed, plenty of places to sit and lounge, pretty decor and a spacious bathroom. Large windows open to every direction, letting in ocean breezes, the sound of waves, and pretty views of the hills to the east, a pond below, and the lush foliage of the quiet neighborhood of Puako. Downstairs in the shared garden are a grill, outdoor shower, laundry and plenty of beach chairs and boogie boards. Cross the quiet street to the beach access for fantastic snorkeling, to sit on the shore and watch for whales, and take in magnificent sunsets. The island's best beaches and fish tacos are a short drive away. Peg is a gracious hostess who has provided all you might need to relax and feel right at home from the moment you arrive.

Quiet Cottage?

Our expectation was probably what gave us the letdown of our stay in Puako. The writeup and the reality were two different things. Yes, it's a quaint abode with lots of nice amenities, but an upstairs apartment with no afternoon breeze to cool makes for uncomfortableness until the cool evening comes. There's a lot of noisy traffic for a small town and the guy next door departs in his noisy truck at 6 each morning. The kitchen has everything you need and the Internet was good.

Beautiful light and airy Puako home

This VRBO is the upstairs apartment of a 2 apartment home. The breezes are delightful, the views beautiful. Our host, Peg, was warm, welcoming and efficient. Could not have asked for a better place to stay in Puako!

Wonderful stay in private neighborhood

We loved our stay here! Peg was very helpful and answered all my questions before our arrival. The apartment is on the 2nd floor of a loose standing building closer to the entrance. Peg and her husband lives in the main house, which is deeper into the lot. Barely any cars on the road, as it is a dead end. The outdoor grill was clean and private, and we used it several evenings. the washer and drier were great! The bed and bathroom were great. The bathroom were stocked with soap, shampoo etc. The kitchen was stocked with spices etc. There is a private outdoor hot shower ( shampoo and soap provided), which was super convenient after a day at the beach. The condo is 5 minutes away from Hapuna Beach, which is the BEST swimming beach on the island. On our last day, Peg was so accommodating, and let us use beach chairs, towels, umbrella, cooler box, etc until late afternoon ( even though check out time was 11 am). She suggested we use the outdoor shower after a day at the beach, before we had to leave for the airport for an evening flight. After staying in many condo buildings in Hawaii, we loved the privacy and intimacy of this rental! I can highly recommend!!

Lovely cottage and great Puako location

We loved our **2nd** stay here as much as our first 3 years ago. The location is great. Close to our fav beaches, Hapuna (beautiful and shady), Mauna Lani (in front of Beach Club - yummy lunch, great views), Mauna Kea, and 49 Black Sand. The cottage is perfectly set up. The front room has lounging benches we liked so much the last time we had a carpenter knock them off for our deck. The cottage has a lot of windows which let light and the Kohala breeze in, The kitchen has everything you need to make a simple island dinner. We ate lunch out several days so that we could cook dinner at home and enjoy the evening here. Peg and Bud, maholo for your hospitality!

Wonderful Puako

Charming vintage Hawaiin style apartment located in a sleepy residential village perfectly situated to best beaches and for making excursions around the island. Our host Peg was lovely and accommodating offering us use of beach chairs, umbrellas, etc. House has everything one needs for a comfortable stay including wi fi, dishwasher, washing machines, bbq, bicycles, outdoor shower. Best part was the superb location close to all the best hotels and services on the island and within easy driving distance to colorful farmers markets and local activities and restaurants. Great vacation cottage in a relaxed & quiet area!

This is a great cottage nestled along a dead end road than runs adjacent to the shore line. The apartment is located on the second floor of a 2-story cottage. We stayed here for 8 nights in January 2018. The photos posted on VRBO capture it perfectly – cozy, bright and airy. The building and its appliances are older but well maintained, and the unit is clean (The fridge door looks to be rusting and could use some TLC). The kitchen is very well equipped and the closets are stocked with an abundance of clean linens and towels. We enjoyed the delicious breeze that flowed through the apartment day & night and only required the bedroom air conditioner one night out of our 8 day stay. The screened sunroom with its comfy day beds was a favourite location to read or take a nap. Peg and Bud are kind & lovely hosts who greeted us warmly. They reside in the main house located on the property. The pace of Puako Beach is very much like a “summer village” – friendly, casual and laid back. When I booked this stay online, I was a little concerned with apartment’s location alongside Puako Road. However, my concerns were unwarranted. Trees & bushes alongside the cottage provided ample privacy. The road is local traffic and pretty well shuts down by 7PM. We slept with the windows open and the only sound we would hear in the morning was the francolins (birds) rather than any automobiles. There are a number of beach access points within walking distance. The shoreline is rocky with an abundance of sea turtles. No need to take a whale watching boat tour – we would watch them from the shore –it was absolutely spectacular! Peg and Bud’s Puako Tree House is a superb location to explore the Kohala coast and nearby resort areas. We truly enjoyed our stay here.

We are retired now. raised our son and daughter on the Big Island and love to travel between the Islands and Colorado where we have family.
Puako is a very special place to us and our children who are finding their way back after college and work on the Mainland.
That makes us happy, especially now that we have a grandchild!

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with Puako in the early 70's when we spent a few weeks here. Found a real-estate agent and bought this property. moved a few years later and here we are.
