About this property

Tiny Home Boxcar Sanctuary

Our little oak boxcar was built in 1898, and it rode the narrow gauge rails from southern New Mexico trying to reach Denver. Purchased from the Alamosa yard and moved to Pilar, NM, near Taos, Stephen used it to design passive solar systems when not building homes in Santa Fe. It became our place for romantic rendezvous before we built our family home.

Today it is our guesthouse. During several stages of remodeling we have tried to keep an authentic narrow-gauge boxcar feel to the space. We have added a Yodel gas stove, a Pullman kitchen with dining nook and closet, and most recently a bathroom with a very boxcar-esque sliding door. Our family members vie for the space when they are in town, and you can see why. It is so welcoming, and unique even for unique Taos. It isn't hard to imagine you are traveling the world on the historic Chili Line, even though there is wifi, a flat-screen TV, state-of-the-art lounging chairs for reading or TV viewing. The boxcar is powered by solar electric.

For the weary traveler the queen bed is firm and comfortable. Bamboo rayon sheets add a touch of elegance to the boxcar charm. We use only nontoxic, 'green' household products throughout. The 40' flat screen TV can be viewed from the bed or the lounges. The couch is a 'Taos Bed', easily made up to sleep a third guest. The Pullman kitchen includes china and wine glasses, a two-burner electric stove, a small fridge, a sink and a toaster oven. Perhaps best of all, the 'slipper' tub invites leisurely baths or hand-held showers while viewing hundreds of acres of agricultural land, seasonally resplendent with coyotes, rabbits, soaring hawks, nesting magpies, and cows grazing and sometimes calving.

Our property has a hot tub shared with the owner's, adjacent to the owner's home, which sits in a secluded, outdoor space, allowing the contemplation of sunrise, bird flight, cloud shift, stars and moon. Don one of the boxcar bathrobes and your flip flops and take a dip.

Quiet, private and on a dead-end road, some call the boxcar a sanctuary. We are located in Ranchos de Taos, 3.5 miles from the Taos Plaza, and just 40 minutes from the Taos Ski Valley. Come experience a bit of old railroad lore while visiting our beloved Taos, New Mexico.

Unique, Wonderful, Beyond Expectations

We chose the boxcar for a memorable stay for our wedding. It was such an elegant comfortable home with everything you could possibly imagine from cookware to toiletries. The owners hospitality is beyond compare and made our wedding week a true memory. So grateful.

What an absolute Gem!!!

What a perfect getaway!!!! The boxcar itself is a delight and has been retrofitted perfectly to create the most charming space to relax and unwind. Literally every single special touch has been thought of and provided! It was everything I needed! From the thoughtful gesture of providing the type of milk I like in my tea, to the glorious soaker tub overlooking stunning views, to the homemade granola and locally sourced necessities, everything was a dream. The location is stunning and the hosts Jean and Steve were so thoughtful and kind. One of if not the best stays I’ve ever had and I will absolutely be back!!!!!

Great getaway in a historical boxcar

Jean and Steve are wonderful hosts and have done an excellent job refurbishing the boxcar and making it cozy and comfortable. All the amenities we needed were there and it’s an easy drive into town. Plus the views are amazing! We had a wonderful, relaxing stay and are already planning to go back.

A Relaxing Stay

The pastries and coffee were a great start in the mornings, followed by a relaxing soak in the clawfoot tub watching the horses play in the pasture and an occasional hot air balloon climbing and descending in the distance. Evenings were quiet and peaceful. All the essentials were provided and the hosts were very accommodating in making my stay enjoyable.

Fantastic Experience

The boxcar is very well insulated, clean, and very well equipped. The hosts are very friendly and available for anything. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience and wouldn't change a thing. We cooked full meals each night and had no issue (there's a two burner stove, microwave, pots, pans, plates, etc.). Location is perfect for running around during the day and returning to rest. Beautiful views and couldn't recommend this place enough!

Perfect and relaxing stay

Our time at the boxcar was absolutely perfect! Jean and Steve were as accommodating as come be. It was my husband and I with our 18 month old son and pup. Jean left toys with us and a high chair, just what we needed! Along with leaving some stuff in the fridge for us and checking to make sure we were doing well, they did everything we could ever hope for. Plus the location was beautiful and the baths were amazing with the view. 5 star rating from us!

A rustic, charming gem!

The small, quiet boxcar was a wonderful place to unwind from life's stress. It was close to town but far enough away to feel like living in the country. It was cozy and comfortable, and the hosts were wonderful. They were very attentive, available and ready to meet our every need. I would highly recommend this!

Excellent stay. Great views. Quiet

Wonderful experience fantastic views from great location. Solitude was wonderful but center of city is close enough to not miss anything. Easy bike ride on back streets. Jean and Steve provide a great variety of breakfast items and comfortable surroundings. Great that they will recycle for you if you separate items. The boxcar is quaint but has everything one needs. Hope I can stay there again when I'm back in Taos

Funky & so fun

Steve & Jean are the perfect hosts. They're there if you need them with great area information but they certainly don't hover. The Boxcar is the coolest place we've ever stayed thru VRBO. Compact in size with everything you need to enjoy Taos. We brought our two large dogs & there was still plenty of room. The private patio was our favorite spot the enjoy morning coffee or a nightcap. Thank you Ollie for being a gracious doggie host.

Wonderful stay at the Box Car

My family of three had a wonderful stay at the box car. It was cozy, clean and just what we needed. Jean and Steve were amazing hosts, we had fresh eggs, muffins, juice, butter and water in the fridge to make our breakfast and wonderful homemade granola to make a yummy yogurt treat. The bathroom was nice and big with a great soaking tub, the delicious smelling local hand made soaps were a bonus for me. My 8 year old thought it was the coolest thing to live in a Box car, we told almost everyone in town and out about our stay and were very impressed with the hospitality. Steve and Jean's box car has inspired us to take a step towards minimal living. There is nothing more we could have asked for from our stay.

Beautiful views

The Boxcar owners were not present due to an emergency, but their daughter-in-law took great care of us and Jean kept in touch with us. The boxcar is very cute and we loved the special care they took in making it special for us. We are renovators and they did not skimp on anything. The location was great and is not far from town. It has a country feel to it and the view of mountains is awe inspiring. We loved it and so did our dogs. inspiring!

Boxcar Heaven

We spent 3 nights at the Boxcar following 3 nights in a Studio in Albuquerque. The big difference- the boxcar has that lived-in and homey feel and includes everything you may ever need away from home! So besides the charm of sleeping in an antique box car- COOL ENOUGH....you are treated to a very comfortable accomodation that includes: beautiful location and stunning views, close to town yet private, rural space, nice hot tub, sweet bath set up (it really couldn't get much better), small but user friendly kitchen, comfy lounger and long couch and a very high quality mattress. After 3 nights lacking sleep in Albq, we slept well and long in the box car. To top it all off, Steve and Jean are the very best hosts you'll ever meet. We clicked and then shared a meal together. Thanks for everything; we'll keep in touch! Fondly, J & D, Massachusetts

Loved the box car

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Box car. Such a fun experience. Jean and Steve have done an amazing job restoring the space and making it super comfortable for a stay in Taos. It's outside of town but close enough that you can ride your bike or drive in quickly, or explore the wide range of activities in the area. Perfect place to enjoy all that Taos has to offer. We only wish we could have stayed longer.

Peaceful and quaint way to see Taos!

My husband and I had a wonderful time staying in the Chile Line Boxcar. We skied Taos spent some time checking out the local shops, galleries and breweries. The owners, Jean and Steve, were very friendly, kind and helpful. And Jean had the most wonderful homemade granola and good coffee for breakfast - Thanks!! The boxcar is very clean and cozy. And the bed was firm and super comfortable. We slept extremely well - which was well deserved rest for us both. The boxcar is located a 5 or so minute drive from downtown Taos and it was so much nicer than staying in a hotel surrounded by heaps of other people. We also had access to relax in the hot tub under the stars. I loved enjoying the outside chairs near the BBQ and soaking up the sun after our ski day. There is a large flat screen TV, DVD player and WiFi access, and with our own HDMI cable we were able to watch netflix and even an international cricket match! Even though the boxcar size is petite, the extra additions of a kitchen and gorgeous bathroom make it very comfortable. We hope to return here with our daughter - she will love it too, I am sure. My husband is tall, 6'1" - and he fit just fine, However, if you are taller then 6'3", it could be a little short for you, it is a boxcar after all. We both definitely recommend the Chile Line Box car as a way for folks to enjoy a quiet, restful time in Taos,

About the host

Host profile image
I am Jean Kenin, a retired educator who gardens, sings, paints and hikes. My husband Steve is a building inspector, passive solar home builder and motorcycle rider. We met in Taos and have been married for almost 40 years. We have two fabulous sons, grown now, and a smart, well-trained and friendly Catahoula (dog). We love to travel- especially to beaches! We learned first-hand about owner rentals last year when we traveled to Turkey.

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with the views and wildness of this place so close to the center of town, and built our home in 1979. Our property overlooks hundreds acres of pastureland, with the Taos Mountains as back drop. Gazing out over the open Taos landscape friends often ask, how do you get anything done?

What makes this property unique

We moved the boxcar onto our property to have a guest dwelling separate from our home. It brings the lore of the narrow gauge railroad right to our doorstep. The boxcar is nestled next to my ever changing and challenging organic garden. It features the sweetest of well water to drink, a cozy bed nook at one end and the luxurious slipper bath at the other, with the kitchen/dining nook off to the side along the way. The space is quiet on our dead-end road, cool in the summer and cozy warm in the winter. The views from the dining nook and bathtub are of open spaces and big sky. This is the place to write your book, both secluded and stimulating.
Boxcar Rules:
We want you to feel at home during your stay, with these simple considerations:
• Please be respectful of the space. While quiet celebrations are encouraged, this is not a "party house".
• The boxcar is strictly a non-smoking space.
• As the boxcar is solar electric powered, please use energy-conserving practices.
• We request that guests be reasonably quiet after dark while outside the boxcar and in the hot tub.
• The hot tub is a guest privilege, and as such demands appropriate use. No drinking, eating or smoking in the hot tub, no excess body oils and creams, and please no love-making there!
• Unless otherwise arranged, guests should plan to arrive after 3 PM. Please call us with your estimated time of arrival so that we can plan to greet you.
• A quiet, well-behaved dog is welcome to accompany you; call Jean directly to discuss. $10/day fee is due upon arrival. Bring appropriate coverings to keep the furniture free of dog hair and dander. Dogs may not be left alone in the boxcar.
