House is in great position for getting into town and very well kept. Parking was not easy once in main car park we tried not to move it.House big enough for 4 people.
Wonderful modern conversion of an old 4 story cottage. A real ‘bolt hole with gorgeous views, well equipped kitchen, comfy beds and bathrooms and an amazingly responsive host. We were in Dartmouth to see our son at the naval college and he was super grateful for somewhere to relax for a few hours of overnight leave. Parking was a slight challenge because so many families were in town but we were lucky enough to get overnight parking on the road both nights.
Thank you Paul for looking after us from afar!
The property is newly renovated and nicely decorated. The views from the top floor are magnificient. It was very conveneint to have food and cafes at your doorstop or short walk away in town. We reqlly enjoyed the BOLTHOLE.
Property was perfect for what we needed. Amazing view from the top bedroom. Felt very lucky to find such a lovely place last minute. Really clean and well equipped. Comfortable beds.
Excellent communication with the owners.
Booked The Bolthole because of its convenient location for a BRNC Families Weekend. Property was immaculate loved the decor and very comfortable for our party of 6 .Plenty of hot water and comfortable beds. Ideal location for eating out and walks along the quay and literally a 10 min car ride to BRNC or a 20 min walk. Parking was fine too although one vehicle left in long
stay. Wouldn’t advise catering yourself as kitchen not really big enough for all to sit comfortably to eat a dinner but ok for breakfast and drinks but a stones throw from excellent restaurants.
Stairs are steep but just take care. excellent communication from the owner .Maybe be back in December 😍
We had a lovely short break at the Bolthole, which was perfectly positioned in the centre of Dartmouth, with restaurants, bars, and shops all within walking distance. The property was quirky and cosy with lovely views of the river Dart from the top floor. The kitchen was very well equipped with modern appliances should you decide to eat in. We would definitely go back there.
The property has everything you require for you stay. The views from the top floor bed are amazing.
A quick phone call Paul and Karen, the hosts were available at if anything went wrong or assistance required with anything.
Would definitely stay there again.
This is a charming property, with stunning views and perfectly located to get to everything in town. We had a wonderful time visiting Dartmouth and staying here.
We did have 2 surprises. As we were boarding our plane from the US to England we received an email telling us that we needed towels because the property does not provide them. The email also informed us that we were responsible for taking our trash with us when we left. Fortunately, we had family in town who provided towels for us and helped us take away the trash.
The property has many pros and a few cons..
Pros
- It ideally located close to Dartmouth Harbour and the town centre.
- Close proximity to shops and restaurants.
- The house is immaculately clean and modern.
- The kitchen is well-equipped with high-quality appliances and crockery.
- The bathrooms are very clean.
- The top-floor bedroom has superb views of Dartmouth Harbour.
- The owners are very helpful and quick to respond to queries.
Cons
-The rooms are small and we kept bumping into furniture.
- The stairs are very steep. My father-in-law had the downstairs bedroom and he struggled going up and down the stairs every day.
-The top-floor bedroom has a low-pitched roof. I am 5ft 2 inches and my husband is 5ft 6 inches and we both kept banging our heads on the ceiling, when getting in and out of bed.
- You are required to clear all rubbish from the property. Dartmouth Harbour has black bins which we put our rubbish in.
On the whole it is a clean, modern smart property with beautiful views of the harbour and helpful owners.
Lovely property, living accommodation is spacious enough for 4 adults, ample space in bedrooms and lovely sea views. Conveniently situated within easy walking distance to amenities. We pre booked parking at Sainsbury’s a 30 minute walk away (down a very steep hill) but there are regular buses into Dartmouth town centre from outside Sainsbury’s. There are a couple of car parks in the town but do your research on overnight parking etc beforehand. Paul was very accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. Regular contact to ensure an enjoyable stay. Cannot fault at all, we had a lovely few days at The Bolthole.
Perfect little place for the three of us. Husband and 12 year old. We had the top floor which was lovely. Agree the steps are steep and you do need to mind your head once at the top but we were ok and he’s 6 ft 2. We slept with the doors open. On one side of the room there are two comfy chairs where you can watch the lovely views of Kingswear and the various boats going up and down the Dart. 12 year old had the first floor bed and was very happy. The beds were comfortable. We only used the first floor shower room and the water is a great pressure. The kitchen well apportioned, overall really pleased with the stay. Location perfect.
The property was clean, well presented and had everything we needed. Communication with the owner was prompt, considerate and really helpful. The house is clearly well maintained and has the feel of somewhere in which the owner feels real pride. It is genuinely a home from home. The arrangement of rooms worked really well. The property is close to the center of Dartmouth and though there is no long term parking outside the property it really wasn't a problem. We would definitely stay here again.
Great weekend all round. Property located really close to all the local amenities. Perfect for the 3 couples. Finished to a high standard with everything you might need for a holiday in Dartmouth. Good communication by the owner.
Beautiful property including all the bits you might need in the kitchen too which was helpful.
Not great for tiny kids i imagine as the stairs are incredibly steep. We had a lot of banged heads on the sloped ceilings on the top floor so you have to be careful but i imagine that's the same for all the properties in the area.
The basement room is lovely - it's not like a normal 'basement'. It's not stuffy or cold or unpleasant, it's lovely and cosy with it's own en-suite bathroom.
The house is absolutely lovely - the only thing i would say to plan for is the shared space. The bedrooms are all a great size. The kitchen and living room though are very small so not very sociable. There were 5 (3 adults and 2 kids) and we could just about sit round the table for dinner but it's not comfortable for sitting for any length of time so we brought some cushions upstairs to the top floor and recreated a little living room up there. The views are much better anyway. The views from the top floor balcony are phenomenal and we were lucky enough to see a couple of chinooks fly by during our stay too! Would definitely return!
Good communication prior to holiday, beautiful 3 doubled bedroomed property with amazing views from the top floor. Brilliant location, couple of minutes from the river dart right in the centre if Dartmouth.
This beautiful property is located within very close walking distance to Dartmouth Town Centre.
Waking up to the views from the top floor bedroom balconies made our visit a truly memorable one.
Plenty of shops/cafes/restaurants/bars within easy walking distance (be sure to book ahead during the busy summer months to ensure a table for dinner).
There is a Co-op within a five minute walk and a large Sainsburys and Lidl within a ten minute drive.
We dropped our luggage off using the one hour parking opposite the property and then parked at a private location just outside the town using the ‘YourParkingSpace’ app. with a one off payment which meant we didn’t have to worry about our car or car park fees during our stay. There is so much to see and do right on the doorstep, using the foot/car ferry and steam trains that we didn’t need the car all week.
The walk up to the castle is beautiful and if you are fairly fit you should push on to Sugary Cove for a dip in the sparkling clear water there. The Devon pasties and Sausage Rolls from the castle cafe are absolutely delicious!
The house is decorated to a very high standard with beautiful nautical touches. Really well equipped kitchen with quality modern appliances. Comfy beds. Large walk in shower on the first floor.
Very clean throughout.
The hosts were easily contactable and replied very quickly with any extra information we needed.
I would highly recommend a glass of bubbly sipped from the upstairs balcony at sunset, watching the river traffic make its way up and down the Dart.
We will definitely be back.

We are a large, close family based in Staffordshire, with our business focus on caring for the elderly. Karen and I have three daughters, Charlotte, Courtney, Ottie and a son Scott. We love visiting Dartmouth, with a long family history of enjoyment here. We are very proud and fortunate to have our holiday home in Dartmouth, visiting most months, hoping that our guests feel it's a home from home as we do.
Why they chose this property
The Bolthole is very well presented and decorated to suit its environment, receiving a number of improvements to enhance the pleasurable stay over the years we have owned it, most recently converting to the top floor bedroom, adding balconies offering spectacular views of the estuary, Kingswear and out to sea, past Dartmouth Castle. The property is based in the heart of the town, with parking opposite on a first come first served basis, this being unrestricted out of season. Shops, bars and restaurants are within easy walking distance. All bedrooms and communal areas have flat screen televisions, the bathrooms are well equipped with quality fittings and proper showers! there is free Wi-Fi throughout the building along with gas central heating.
What makes this property unique
When purchasing The Bolthole in 2007, Karen and I recognised immediately that this was the perfect holiday home, we were overwhelmed with the fabulous views and the 'quirky' feel of the property, which is typical of the area, along with it's close proximity to amenities, meaning we generally park the car upon arrival and never touch it again until we leave!
