About this property

Umbria reconstructed olive mill in Castello Di Montegiove, Leccino

Charming and completely restored 13th century castle olive mill, transformed into a luxurious country house, located just outside the ring wall of Castello di Montegiove.

Montegiove is a lovely and peaceful medieval country village, close to the main communication lines and equidistant of Rome (154 km) and Florence (151 km), it is an ideal base for exploring the historical treasures of Umbria and Tuscany, especially the countryside of the historical provinces of Orvieto, Assisi, Todi, Spoleto, Perugia and Siena.

The house is equipped with satellite television, high speed Internet connection, independent heating, fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, laundry facilities and drying rack. The house is furnished in the traditional style of a central Italian manor house with a tasteful combination of antique and modern furniture. Extra maid service and private cook can also be arranged.

The rental includes heating, weekly change of sheets and towels, normal final cleaning and taxes.

Leccino: 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 1 alcove bed, livingroom, kitchen, sleeps: 5. Direct access to garden.

155 m², 2 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room, kitchen/dining room, 1 alcove bed
sleeps: 5
The first floor is composed of an entrance hall, two well-equipped double bedrooms, one with a view over the valley the other towards the castle, a modern bathroom (shower and bath tub), a double living room with open fireplace and library. The ground floor is composed of a large and light kitchen-dining room with direct access to the garden, a small storage room, a bathroom (with shower), and a charming landing on the way up to the first floor with an alcove bed.

The castle of Montegiove has existed since the early 12th century and has in the last four centuries been the property of the Marchesi Misciattelli.

Today, still family-owned, it is the centre of an estate covering nearly 3000 acres of beautiful Umbrian countryside, where oak forests, vineyards, olive fields and arable land blend in total harmony with ancient dry walls and farmhouses built of local stone.

The principal products of the estate are wine, olive oil, cereals, oil seeds, Chianina beef cattle, forage and forest products and. There is abundant wildlife such as boar and deer, and the local flora including truffles and mushrooms. The beautiful surroundings and unspoiled environment make it hard to believe that Montegiove is only 17 km from Italy's main motorway A1 (Milan - Naples), which also connects Rome and Florence.

During your stay in the Montegiove olive mill you will get the opportunity to be the Misciattelli family's private guest and get a guided tour in the winecellar, at the castle and the surrounding estate.

A wonderful, relaxing holiday
From the moment we stepped out of the car and looked at the stunning castle, countryside and property we felt the peace and the stresses of the past year evaporate. Rikki and Lorenzo have created a spectacular haven for guests that need a retreat from day to day life. The villa was stunning and the view of the castle, while the sheep peep at you over the fence was fantastic. Our hosts were charming and struck the perfect balance between looking after us and providing a holiday away from the hustle and bustle of London life. Highlights were the tour of the castle, the wine tasting and truffle hunting with 2 most gorgeous dogs and their owners. Thank you so much for a very special holiday which was such a blessing to us.

Leccino Apartment, July 2019
We spent a wonderful week at Castello di Montegiove with our teenage children. Rikke & Lorenzo were the most welcoming hosts & really looked after us during our stay - you truly couldn’t ask for better hosts. Nothing was too much trouble & they were both so friendly. Their home in the castle is a very special place & we loved the tours & wine tasting. We stayed in the Leccino apartment, which was perfect for our family of 4. It’s a huge apartment split over 3 levels with the kitchen/dining area opening onto a gorgeous private garden, where we enjoyed sunset drinks most evenings. If you like good wine & olive oil, it is plentiful at Castello di Montegiove - for us, it really added to our stay. The salt-water swimming pool is a fantastic place to cool off, with wonderful views out over the valley. It’s a beautiful property in the Umbrian hills, a great location for touring Tuscany & Umbria. We can’t wait to visit again!

Fabulous
This wonderful place offers you the experience to step back in time , but with the modern conveniences of today. Words and pictures can never do it justice it is a must see. The castle owners, Rikki and Lorenzo are the most gracious hosts who could not do enough to insure our comfort and enjoyment. This place was my favorite part of our Italian adventure.

SIMPLY PERFECT
We have just returned from a 2 week stay in this very tastefully restored Olive Mill. We stayed with 2 friends and all 4 of us had THE most wonderful time and would return in a heartbeat. Firstly our hosts, Rikke and Lorenzo, couldn't have been more welcoming, hospitable and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Every restaurant recommendation was spot on, Rikke even took the time to book a table on a couple of occasions for us. We toured the castle with Lorenzo and Rikke and , the wine making part of the castle and the vineyards. Irk and Lorenzo were truly the perfect hosts. Our 2 bedroom villa was very clean, very spacious, simply all that we hoped it would be. The kitchen led directly to a beautiful outdoor area complete with large table, chairs to relax in and was the perfect spot for breakfast, sunset drinks and dinners under the stars. Just a short walk away was a delightful pool, with a beautiful view , equipped with numerous sun lounges and umbrellas. In the other direction, also just a very short walk away is the Bar, the perfect location for our morning cappuccino and our evening aperitivo, run by a delightful family. The location is the perfect setting to combine days of sightseeing , being close enough for outings in Perugia, Civita di Bagnoregio (A MUST) , Orvieto, Panicale and many many others. The walk up to the Fendi village is worth doing, it is very pretty and the view back to the castle fantastic. Restaurants we tried and loved, Il Gatto Giallo ( The Yellow Cat) , Massolino ( Panicale), Osteria a Priori ( Perugia). Truffle hunting was so much fun and scrambled eggs with shaved truffle is a must. A day trip to Assisi was worthwhile with a 3 hr tour with Umbria Con Me. All in all, the trip of a lifetime, in a stunning location with wonderful hosts. Just don't book it when we want to return please!

A fabulous getaway from the fast life
Wonderfully spacious, antique filled and clean accommodation on top of a mountain in Umbria, beautiful views in all directions, fresh air and to top it all part of a renovated medieval castle. The stories from our excellent hosts Rikki and Lorenzo about wine making and the history of the castle are compelling - with real stone cannon balls found lodged in the walls from previous attacks on the castle. Nearby Esso station in Montegabbione - they make excellent coffee and cornetti (sounds strange ....but worked really well for us for breakfast). And within easy reach of Perugia, Orvieto, two beautiful lakes and the amazing Scarzuoli (15 minutes away) - ancient home of St Francis. This was a particular highlight for us! If you want a week in peace and quiet, with great hosts, wonderful wine, fabulous views....well you cant go wrong here.

About the host

In 2002 we moved from Copenhagen in Denmark, where we both grew up, to Montegiove to take over the daily management of the family estate “Castello di Montegiove”. We have never regretted this decision, even though the first years in Montegiove were not at all like a fairytale. The castle had to be completely restored; the roofs all had big holes so we spent all rainy days running around with pots and pans to pick up the water. Today the castle has been through a thorough and respectful renovation. Lorenzo: I spent almost all my childhood summers together with my grandfather in Montegiove, following daily life at the estate and in the wine cellar. I still recall adventuring round in the castle and walks in the splendid and unspoiled nature around Montegiove. I always hoped, that one day, I could take care of the estate, and that happened after years of study at the “Royal Veterinarian and Agricultural University” and the “University of Aberdeen” ending up with a Ph.D. and a short carrier as scientist and assistant professor, before moving to Italy. Rikke: I worked with pattern making and designs in the fashion industry before moving to Italy. My big passion is decorating and putting things in order so moving to a place like this where everything needed a loving hand has been a fantastic challenge for me. Today I am the practical person in the household making all ends meet for our busy modern family. We still feel so lucky waking up in the morning and looking out at the beautiful valley, and we are never getting tired of the absolute silence and peace that is so rare to find in the modern world of today. Sometimes the clouds are hanging lower than Montegiove and it feels like we are on an island in the middle of the sea.

Why they chose this property

Lorenzo and his sister inherited the property from their grandfather Paolo. The castle has been in the Misciattelli family since 1780.
