Nauvoo Trip

My wife and I had 6 of our grandchildren with us who are High School age. We must have misunderstood the information on the website. It was a difficult and long week primarily due to the fact it has only 1 shower and 1 sink with a mirror for 8 grown guests. (There is a tub upstairs but it took most of the hot water if used) Let me bullet point the challenges below. -One Shower -No mirrors in upstairs bedroom, could not shave or comb hair in up stairs bedroom. -Windows upstairs were covered in plastic. Could not open to ventilate, and two main bedrooms downstairs have blinds that are tack down and cannot open. Makes for dark rooms. -Many dead flies in upstairs bathroom -Very narrow and steep stairs. This home would work best with 4 guests in the two downstairs bedrooms and the price should reflect that better.

Two suggestions

The stairway going upstairs in serious need of a complete handrail. Someone will potentially be seriously hurt coming down with absolutely nothing to hold on to the event that you slipped. Commode seat and the commode itself is too small given the expansion of the population. Fan to take air conditioning upstairs was wonderful. Beds were comfortable, kitchen was great, nice towels, Dining Room was just right, living room was quite comfortable, good parking, location was outstanding.

Close to everything in Nauvoo

We loved staying in this historic home and having an authentic Nauvoo experience. It met all our needs and there was plenty of room for everyone to sleep, eat, and visit at the end of the day. The secluded location close to everything was great. The house is old and definitely not the lap of luxury, but it met all our needs and added to the memories from our time in Nauvoo.

Functional

Pros: good showerhead and water pressure; well-stocked kitchen and bathrooms (plenty of paper towels, sandwich bags, small appliances, toilet paper, etc.); lots of beds; nice proximity to Nauvoo Temple and sites; quiet location; WiFi worked okay for basic internet needs; nice big dining table; owner very responsive and manager very helpful. Cons: old musty house smell; finishes and furnishings felt a little hodge-podgey, but perhaps the owners are in the process of making improvements? ie: carpet had been removed from dining area and thresholds were missing and holes were patched); no tv channels (just dvd/vhs, so bring your own movies - especially considering the sites are only open from 10-5, so you’ll be spending a fair amount of time at the house); very steep stair acces to the upper floor, which may prove to be a challenge for older folks; bathrooms are accessed via bedrooms/sleeping area, so privacy can be tricky; parking is limited to small grassy area next to house.

Charming Home in Nauvoo

We so enjoyed the stay in this beautiful home in Nauvoo Illinois. It is in amazing condition and it is clear there has been a lot of love put into the restoration and upkeep. We loved that it is in a slightly secluded neighborhood yet still close to downtown and everything that Nauvoo has to offer. It is just a few blocks from the LDS Temple and all the historical sites are just a short drive. The home is well taken care of and very clean. We had 8 adults and could have easily fit another 5 or 6 as well as a few young children if they didn't mind sleeping on the floor. The kitchen is well stocked with all the pots, pans, and utensils that you would need for any cooking that might be done, which I recommend as the restaurant choices in town a a bit limited.

About the host

Hosted by Robert Allen

Host profile image
We love Nauvoo! We have spent many enjoyable months getting to know the people, history, and stories of this wonderful place. Many of our ancestors came through here at one point or another. It is a blessing to re-connect with them and learn more about ourselves. When my wife and I first visited Nauvoo in 2004, we knew we wanted to come back and bring our family. We came back the very next year and have been there at least part-time for 7 of the last 10 years.

Why they chose this property

This home is a piece of history. We love it. Our family has created some of our happiest memories here and we want to share that with others. The home is over 100 years old and has a stone foundation. It is fun to see the updates made over the years (especially evident in the various styles of light switches). New kitchen, roof, and Air Conditioner make the home very comfortable.

Nestled at the end of a tree-lined street, this home is the perfect place to relax and get away while being within walking distance to the nearby Nauvoo temple and historic district. Historic Nauvoo boasts an abundance of activities, plays, musical performances, pageants, restored homes and shops. There is so much to do nearby. Our home offers a great place to relax between activities or for some family members to nap and re-charge while the rest are off exploring.

What makes this property unique

1/3 acre with room to play, park, or camp on the lawn.

Angel Moroni on the temple top is visible from the upstairs bedroom window.

Deer and fawns often visible on the lawn in the evenings or early morning.

Great place to watch or catch fireflies :)
