About this property

Artful Lodging 1st Fl'r 2 Bedroom Apt in Civil War Infirmary Home Montpelier VT

This sunny, beautifully decorated, fully furnished semi-accessible (3 steps to enter witha railing at the door) apartment is in an historic Civil War Infirmary building, part of the Sloan Hospital, and was rolled down the street from the Vermont College green in the 1870's, then fully updated with every modern convenience! The apartment is cozy during winter with loads of windows and sunshine, and cool in summer with A/C in the queen bedroom, if you feel you need it, and a large ceiling fan in the living room/2nd bedroom. The apartment includes a fully outfitted kitchen, and bathroom with anything you might need. Hardwood floors add to the charm. There are 2 bedrooms - 1 room with Queen-size bed and the other with a Queen, a Double, and a couch - which could be used for a child to sleep on. We live at the property and have books and games, and any kitchen items you might need if they aren't already in your kitchen. I always set out toys suited to the ages of your children. Our backyard has a spectacular view of Camel's Hump and the valley with the capitol building and downtown. We welcome guests to sit and enjoy cocktails at sunset or have a barbecue. (Just ask so we can coordinate with our other guests.) The house is walking distance to downtown, very near the college green and VCFA campus, and many area attractions and resorts, including Stowe, Sugarbush, Trapp Family Lodge, and Bolton Valley (all 30-40 minutes drive). Morse Farm sugarworks and gift shop is just up the hill. Right in Montpelier, Kellogg Hubbard Library holds many events for kids, a local rec center has tennis courts, several ball fields and a pool. There is a reservoir for cookouts and swimming in summer, and many rivers and streams to play and fish in right in town. We have kayaks, nordic skis, snowshoes, and other sporting equipment we are happy to share. Montpelier is a great central location for day trips, and we are happy to be your guide. Check out the Montpelier Alive schedule and the city website, as well as Lost Nation Theater. Burlington and Lake Champlain are a 35 minute drive, and hiking trails are 20-30 minutes away to Camel's Hump and White Rocks/Hunger Mountain trailheads. The city circ bus stops regularly in front of the house and will quickly bring you to pick up groceries. We have two movie theaters in town as well! This is truly your home away from home!
If our calendar is full, please contact me as we have two other apartments here: listings #971889 (Mountain-View Studio +1 Bdrm) and #454402 (2nd Floor Apt just above this apt).
Many groups and families like to rent the entire property for their guests. Please contact me for pricing and availability if you are interested!

Beth was very accommodating. The apartment was quaint and historical. Location was perfect in a quiet neighborhood yet close to city center. Only thing we would have wanted was cable tv….football season!

Totally unsatisfactory
Check-in was not as described- it took quite some time to figure out how to enter the premises, not as per host instructions. Host was unavailable during our many attempts to contact her to resolve this. Even worse, host forced us to change units in the middle of our stay. This was done without prior discussion or our agreement. We had specifically booked a first floor unit and were forced into dealing with stairs against our wishes. Host never apologized nor expressed any interest in our satisfaction. Overall, not a great VRBO listing.

Great stay
We rented 2 of the apartments for a family vacation. Beth is very lovely, the apartments were great. We did a lot of cooking (nice kitchen), sat outside for the views at sunset. We hope to return next summer.

Fantastic Home
The owner was awesome. I felt like I was staying at a family member's home. The apartment was clean and tastefully decorated. The grounds were impeccably maintained. I was thankful for such a lovely place to stay after day long trainings at the North Branch Nature Center.

Relaxing and close by
The rooms are very nice. Everything is kept very tidy. It's an older building and it gets chilly at night in April, so you may need to turn the heat up a bit, but the blankets are warm, the beds are comfortable and the kitchen is functional. The place is only a short walk to city center, and Beth is absolutely lovely. Would stay again for sure.

Nostalgia at its best!
We loved coming home for the Norwich Bicentennial Reunion. Beth was friendly and made sure our needs were met. The beds were comfortable and the quietness of the neighborhood appreciated. The beauty and decor make this house truly lovely. Close to downtown Montpelier, Northfield and Burlington. We were able to make all alumni activities. Thank you Beth .... this was an amazing Welcome Home for us. Married across the quad 31 years ago...good to come home! Thank you! Gregg and Bev Van Citters

Great spot in Montpelier!
There aren't many places to rent in Montpelier proper (which is a great town to stay in to see VT in general), and this is a real gem. Me, my husband, and my two kids (ages 4 and 7) rented the bottom floor of the house (the upper floor is also available for rent). It's cozy (the living room is also the bedroom), but it didn't feel cramped and seemed like just the right size for us. The accommodations are comfortable. Beth the owner is a wonderful hostess who put a lot of children's toys and books in the apartment which our kids really appreciated. Our friends rented the upper floor, and they brought a baby with them, and she had all kinds of baby things for them, like a pack 'n play and high chair. The house is in a nice neighborhood, close to a college (I recommend having dinner at their cafeteria; it's made by the culinary students there). It's easy to walk downtown. The only possible drawbacks for some people is that there isn't a tv (we didn't mind), and the owners live in the house that's connected (we rarely saw them -- only outside -- and never heard them), and you might have strangers living above you (you can hear some creaking above, and some muffled conversation if it's loud) and you'll share an entrance/exit with them. But these are pretty minor things; overall, this is a great pick for your Vermont stay!

Lovely weekend stay in Montpelier
We had a wonderful stay at Beth and Bob's place in Montpelier! The home was easy to find, and was clean, cozy, and had absolutely everything we needed. It's located on a lovely, quiet street, and just a nice walk away from the downtown area. Beth and Bob were extremely gracious and communicative hosts. Despite living only an hour away, I wasn't too familiar with downtown Montpelier, and Beth was so helpful in providing suggestions for places to visit, eat, and grab a drink. We had a great dinner at Three Penny Taproom and delicious gelato at Chill. Beth had so many wonderful suggestions that I think we'll need to make another trip back soon! :)

Homely
We stayed only for two nights but we enjoyed every minute. Close enough to walk to downtown to restaurants and shops. Had everything you needed if you wanted to cook and very clean felt at home. She also left us some homemade cookies and a bottle of wine to enjoy you cannot ask for more.

Absolutely beautiful apartment, gorgeous garden and thoughtful host
I stayed in the downstairs apartment at 80 College for 10 days during my final residency at Vermont College of Fine Arts. It's a very short walk to the college, but also into town - it couldn't have been more convenient. The apartment was beautiful and very cosy, and Beth was incredibly welcoming, thoughtful and kind, asking us if there was anything we needed, and even offering to change our sheets for us if we needed. It's a shoes off rule inside the house which helps to keep everything clean, which is great. The garden is absolutely gorgeous - there were peonies in bloom when we were there and we were able to sit outside and enjoy a view over Montpelier and the mountains at sunset with a drink, surrounded by nature. I could not think of a better place to stay in Montpelier and would wholeheartedly recommend it.

Wonderful Stay!
I stayed at 80 College for 12 days during my residency at VCFA. beth was wonderfully accommodating, taking me along with her to the grocery store once, lending a slow cooker and a yoga mat. I recommend this property wholeheartedly.

Cozy Nest, Close to VCFA Campus
I stayed in the first-floor apartment with another student for a 10-day residency at VCFA. My room was very comfortable, kitchen was well-stocked, and Beth went out of her way to make sure all were comfortable, even leaving little candies by the entry door every day and offering to do laundry. It's a very short walk to campus. One bedroom is right off the kitchen. The other bedroom/living room (where I stayed) is larger with a private entrance, which makes it nice if sharing the apartment. Thanks Beth for being such a great hostess.

Lovely little apartment in one of the nicest parts of Montpelier
My wife and I spent five days here with our 18-month old son, and we were very pleased with the property and with its owner. The apartment is essentially three rooms (not counting the full bathroom): a bedroom, a kitchen/dining area and a sitting room/second bedroom. You can enter via the kitchen or the sitting room, which made it perfect for our situation and allowed us to come and go without disturbing the little guy if he was sleeping. The kitchen is well appointed, featuring all of the cookware and servingware needed for a small meal. It's a cozy space, so you wouldn't want to have more than 4-5 diners at a time, but it's great for small gatherings. The apartment as a whole is on the small side, and it's a little creaky due to its age, but it's a very comfortable space and a very authentic Vermont residence. We visited during foliage season, and it was the perfect complement to our experience. Finally, the property owner could not have been more gracious or obliging. She went out of her way to make sure that our every need was seen to, and we consistently felt like we were a priority. She has a real knack for hospitality, and we're extremely grateful to her. We hope to stay there again soon!

About the host

Host profile image
I am an architect, educator, instructional designer, artist and mother of four. I live in this wonderful historic house, which is getting more and more empty as the children have grown! We would love for you to stay here and have loads of fun ideas for your visit to Vermont. This is a quiet, peaceful place and we spent most of our time painting, gardening, cooking, and being outdoors when not hard at our work.

Why they chose this property

Our many guests have greatly enjoyed staying here. Because we live in the back part of the house (which is very long) we are right here if there are any worries or if you need anything. Because we live very close to downtown you are able to just park your car and walk everywhere. We are even on the city bus route now! There is lots of live music downtown, and local craft beer to try, excellent restaurants, bookstores, a great library, and of course, America's smallest capital. Montpelier is bustling with fun and interesting things to do during all seasons! PLUS, we are centrally located so it is easy to take day trips all over Vermont from here. Montreal is under a 2 hour drive as well.

What makes this property unique

I think the most unique benefit to our house is the mixture of old house charm and modern conveniences. The house is very cozy during winter months, and we are a 15 minute drive to hiking trails, and 30-40 minutes from some of the best ski resorts in the country - Stowe, Sugarbush, Trapp Family Lodge, and Bolton Valley. Burlington is just a quick commuter bus ride away, or a 35 minute drive, and a truly vibrant college town on Lake Champlain. The capital is a really fun place to check out and we hope you'll visit us soon!
